View Full Version : Fox (Newscorp) buys IGN: 650 M$
Stillwell 09-08-2005, 07:03 PM NEWS Corp is buying internet games company IGN Entertainment Inc for $US650 million ($854 million).
The acquisition underscored the company's commitment to expand its internet presence, News Corp said In a statement released tonight.
IGN and its network of sites will become part of News Corp's Fox Interactive Media unit.
News Corp has previously announced the $US580 million acquisition of US-based online entertainment company Intermix Media, as well as the purchase of college sports destination Scout Media.
"With the addition of IGN, Intermix and Scout Media to the existing Fox-branded sites, News Corporation's US web traffic will increase to nearly 70 million unique monthly users, and more than 12 billion page impressions per month, putting the company in the top echelon of most trafficked sites on the internet today," News Corp said.
"The combined sites will also provide a powerful cross-promotional opportunity for Fox's television and film content and enable the company to more efficiently introduce new products and services using its enhanced web presence."

I call shinnanigans! Why in the hell would anyone pay for so much for such an easily replaceable company? To put things into perspective, a Japanese company just bought Palm for about 300 million dollars.

i use to goto ign all the time back in the day, then they put ads EVERYWHERE! EVERYWHERE! and their reviews are very one sided and not very "fair."
maybe with all this cash, they can stop throwing ads in out faces, but that doesn't seem like a lot of money.

Ruper Murdoch isn't an ordinary media "mogul". He's famous for having earned his billions on a "sell cheap dreck to the lowest common denominator for profits" formula. See Foxnews, The Sun (UK) and the New York Post for reference. The guy just doesn't care what his businesses publish as long as money can be made with it.
So I wouldn't expect anything great from a Newscorp owned IGN. It'll just become a cheap platform for pushing certain films and game titles to higher sales.

Well since all of the affiliated sites come along with this, it adds QUITEEEEE a bit beyond just IGN.

You mean as "fair and balanced" as his insanely slanted FOX News channel?!?
Like there is a chance in hell that this is going to turn out well.

650 million? IGN?
Did someone just accidently add a few zeros on the end of that check or what? 0_o
Just think of all the subpar TV shows they could have spent that money on... :wip:

I could be niave, but i'm failing to see the reason why everybody is upset about this around here. Granted, "The Man" owns it now (which I do sorta understand because they may have push in what is said) but what about the possibility of having a G4 tv type of station which doesn't suck?!. What about the possibility of having a print magazine that deals with game dev. (gotta say, I am not generally satisfied with the mags that are out now) ?!. What about the possibility that FOX would buy them just for the finacnial aspect, without changing anything? (That happens alot between major tech purchases) I've gotta say that I found out through my new art director in the videogame industry that every major company coming out with a new game either pays the major mags and sites, straight cash, to give thier new game good reviews, or trades the purchase of ad-space on a site or mag, to give thier game good reviews. I'm neither for nor against the purchase......I just wanted to put thiese possibilities and facts out here since everybody around here seems SO bummed out about this purchase

LOL
I am sorry but that made me laugh really hard.
No offense, but you sound incredibly naive when it comes to the world of business. Not only will they change them, but truthfully, I think they will ruin them, and within 2 or 3 years IGN will be run into the ground.

I don't see what is so niave about that. businesses do that quite a bit. Buying a company, making a few minor changes here and there, but generally leaving the company pretty much alone and just raking in the profits of an already succesfull company, which is already making money. Not saying that's the way it's gonna work, but it does happen quite a bit.

News Corp chief, Rupert Murdoch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupert_Murdoch), is often described as the world's most powerful "neocon". His media interests are vast and global. He owns Fox News channel, 20th Century Fox, New York Post, London's 'Daily Mirror', 'Times, and 'News Of The Word' newspapers, 70% of newspapers in Australia, Star TV Hong Kong. The list goes on and on.
As for movie reviews, are you really going to go to the owner of 20th Century Fox to give you an unbiased movie review? Then again, most people who go to an IGN website for a movie review wouldn't know who owned it.

... which is exactly the point. He owns soooo many media outlets (and many of them skewed toward the right-wing propoganda BS) that there is always the possibility that their movie review or TV show review or their news story or whataver is biased since it all falls under the same corporate umbrella.

... wonder why this Murdoch is so successful? ..... I wonder if maybe there is more than one point of view?

There are reasons for why he's so successful / powerful, but those reasons verge on the political, so I can't really discuss them here.
Maybe do a Google search for "Rupert Murdoch" (including the inverted commas) and you can read all about him.

Yea, I am A LOT less worried about banner ads, as I am about tainted/skewed content and embedded product-placement. Ads I can deal with - it is when companies try to make an opinion piece read like a non-biased review that pisses me off.

Oh geez people, you guys seem so cynical its really comical. Listen I dont think you have to worry about Right-Wing/ Conservative messages being embedded into your review of Quake 6 or any other review. I know murdoch has political power but this is a entertainment company he's buying, not a newspaper or television news network.

Last I checked, but TV networks (like Fox) were "entertainment companies" also.
Anyhways, concerning this gaming company - I would be much more concerned in them just milking it for every last dime - ads everywhere, product placement here and there and direct links all over the damn place to other NewsCorp media.

Ever wondered why there a no protest songs any more? Gone are the days when dissenters like Bob Dylan were allowed.

I'm pretty sure IGN owned Gamespy, RottenTomatoes, and Fileplanet, all huge websites as well. So that's why the price tag is so hefty. Fileplanet and Gamespy have pretty hefty traffic.
