View Full Version : Normal mapping problem C4D 9.5
Hi there
I test normal mapping and bake texture technologies in C4D 9.5 and I have a little question.
I have two models - characters, simple and detailed and I want to use detailed model to normal map production. But Tangent mode generates only fully blue - Z direction map without displacement.
Thus I used Object mode, but this mode is not suitable to animation etc.
Will you help me? Thank you!
Left: simple model, right: source of detailed model that I used for normal map creation (I converted HN > poly). Mode: Object.

There's an option in the bake tag for choosing object, tangent, or world space. Tangent space should work--don't judge just from looking at the normal map. Of course if you're using the demo you can't really see....

I know, but "tangent map" is fully blue, this is my problem... And I want to know, WHY?
Normal mapping technologie and modes (spaces) are very good depicted in manual, but manual did not help me...
I use full version, because I make support for Czech, I prepare czech localisation, manuals etc.
Thank you, Adam...

i believe the reason is that if i'm not mistaken cinema's normal map baking doesn't bake between different meshes directly (which kinda limites it's usefulness), this means that without bump/normal map already on there it wont generate any tangent info other than the surface being totaly flat (tangent measure the difference between surface normals).
however do not despair, i've not tried this howeve,r it should work.
bake the normal world/object space normal map out for yoru high res mesh. apply it to your low res mesh, bake the lower res mesh normal map in tangent space out. now you should have a tangent space map, use this new tangent space normal map on your low res mesh.

Left character already uses normal map, but normal map in mode object, in this mode is everything very nice and perfectly.
OK, will I use detailed model for normal mapping in tangent mode? Must I use this mode only with SPD technology?

no. as i said you can't create a tangent normal map on your high res mesh because cinema doesn't compare the meshes whilst making it.
tangent normal maps are about the difference between the surface and it's normal (this is why your tangenet map is blue, there is no difference between the surface normal, and it's derivated normal), thus you either need two meshes (one to provide the surface, one to provide the normal), or a mesh with either a normal map, bump map, or displacement map on it in order to generate a tangent map.
as cinema does not allow the former you must go with the latter, which is what my steps in the previous post do.

OK, how can I get normal map in tangent mode? I have two same models....
And this map has been generated via Texture baker from detailed character, but this was older baker version (before few days). There are few strange lines, but map corresponds to my fixed idea...

Thank you for your time, and I´m so sorry, if i´m a bit dopey, my english is not so good...
