Thought about a fun version, where Spectacular, a little boy, physically weak but mentally powerful, is The One who saves humanity from Evil (of some kind)

haha... nice rough.

I like the little huddle of people and the scary monster face!

(maybe you could have the boy turning back to the people, in a 'Look what i'm doing, aren't i clever' kinda way!?)

Another rough sketch and a diffefent approach, more dramatic, the return to the begining that will end the evils of the world...

An update to this concept. Added more detail to the bg and character.
Other ideas soon to be uploaded, just to confuse things...

I've played a bit with this image. Started more light and cartoony, on the way I indulged into making dramatic atmosphere. The characters are still rough outlines. I'll post other color variations too that affect the mood.
The "Specta-cular" boy saves humanity from evil spirits... Heavy..

I'm lovin' the colors and design of the more cartoony concept. :D

Another idea i thought of in the "spectacular" concept.
Finding the lost city Atlantis.
Could happen possibly, and the chill and shivers of the one who finds this ancient city would rather be a one in a life time experience.
Quick layout comp, changes will come, more impressive ruins, a diver in the foreground, perhaps with a facial expression. Hang on.

After a week and a half of absence, I finally had some free time to put in the challenge.
Some work on the boy theme, a change of bg colors...

A slight change in the boy.
Added an outfit and cape-gloves.
Changed again bg colours to redish-yellow,
some more work on the people.

On the idea of Spectacular boy's uniform, this might be the logo on his outfit.

ChrisThatGuy
10-12-2005, 04:18 PM
I'd suggest simplifying the logo you have, using the basic shapes but taking out the bevel and shine. Logos normally have to be quickly readable, so simplicity helps.

Good idea overall.

evanfotis
10-12-2005, 05:36 PM
I totally agree with you,
especially when the logo-symbol will be shrinked onto his uniform...
Its gotta be really bold...
But, I guess on the late hours I got carried away with the usual clishe's of bevels and drop shadows:scream:...

After some absence again, I played around colouring the lost Atlantis theme a bit.
Although these colours are more "real" I kinda prefer the previous blue tones.
Any suggestions here?

I think the more colors you add the better, if only in subtle ways. I think you could even take your golden glow and apply it to more parts of the painting, such as the stonehenges. I do like the dark blue and deep green as a primary cold color choice, and the gold helps you bring some warmth in, which will really draw attention.

Again changed to the other idea...
Spent some time in Painter fixing the image, adjusting the lines, blending colours and shades...
Any crits or suggestions are really welcomeat this point.

Here's a close-up of the spirits-demons.
Still need a good chunk of work.
I want to retain the transparency, the etherial element, yet have depth and gravity without making them too real...
Any ideas here?

Hey there, very nice pic. Style is cool.
One thing though, it almost looks like the boy is "producing" the demons from his hand, like a genie or something. Could you put up more of a barrier (demon claws, shafts of light, electricity, etc) to emphasise that he really is holding them back.

Bloody nice work on the whole. Keep it up...

evanfotis
10-21-2005, 11:41 AM
Thanks for the input, I hadn't thought about that perspective before, and you're right.
Thats why having a fresh eye on the work is almost essential.
I'll try to add some elements that make it more obvious that the kid is resisting and holding them back rather than producing them..

The piece is cartoony enough for them to 'bounce' off his forcefield (whatever). I like the linework - a touch of the Steadman about it :)

The perspective as a whole is a little flat at the moment - as if the elements have been carefully placed on a stage. Maybe you could explore new angles once you've defined the action a little more.

good luck with it all - I like your characters.

Thanks for the crit.
I deliberately kept the comp view clean and unluttered with other elements.
Having a low angle perspective and looking at the scene as on "a stage" helps imho focus on the characters and action.

Working on the peolpe here.
Still need work.
Usually I work rather as sketching than painting, drawing the form, and coloring simply by filling the lines adding some gradiation and shading.
Here I'm trying to use painting style on cartoony subject...
Which, although feels creative and improvizing, usually I manage to loose the form and proportion, and over again. Not time efficient at all!

Worked on the whole comp.
Added some sfx elements, lightning, electricity and stuff...
Tried to make a "safety" ring that Spectaculus boy creates, which protects the people from the electrifying attack of the demons.
Again tried not to overdo it with these elememts, and instead of adding they rob...
Any ideas and suggestions at this point is crucial.:-)

Continuing work on various details.
AFAIC, the most tedious part, quite boring can become...
Added reflections on the " protective buble", worked on the demons expressions, fixed some clouds, shadows etc...
I always welcome anyones suggesions, and crits.

The challenge is heading towards its end, and I've kind of stuck in some details...
I want the demons to emerge from the ominous cloudy stormbeing part of it.
So basically a morph from clouds to their face would be appropriate.

I have three variations of the theme.
In image A, is the original comp, without electric storm or added clouds on top.
Image B an in-between.
Image C, with smoky clouds and lightnings.
In A the demaons are not quite cloudmade.
In C I feel its a bit too busy..

I really would apreciate your input and suggestions in this phase.

hi hi

I enjoy the contrast between the cute little hero and the monsterous deamon things. Do you have any special plans for coloring the bystanders? Some dramatic shadows might go well with their sense of dread and help give them definition, or maybe diffuse shadows would keep them from taking too much of the foreground.

Im voting for the A version. Its the most readable, while other two seems to be a bit messy up there. And for the protecting buble, I suggest u to put some reflection on it, just to show its round, not just 2d. Keep up with the good work man!

I think I'll settle for something like this.
Minor changes to come, and one that has to do with canvas size. Right now the image is a bit wider, so I may have to add some space on top where the clouds are, to comply with the specifications of the challenge.

I prefer A too, but... have to show them transforming from cloud to deamons,
and some electric activity should be present to show that something is going on there:D.

I'll work on the bubble, as you suggested, trying not to give too much emphasis so it grabs attention with shines etc...

@IceKatze
I'll try to add some dramatic shadows to the people. Thanks!

Added about 250px on top in the original res. image.
Played with the clouds, so there is more even transition towards the demons, added some minor stuff on the bubble.
NExt step to add more shadow on people, and if nothing else I see comes up, thats it...
Any thoughts before its too late?

In a diverse world of injustice, apathy and relinquised decline, all horrors of mankind’s subconscious self have been unleashed, dominating people worldwide.
People’s worst elements, greed, materialism, envy, amoralism, vindictiveness, fears of all kinds, panic, phobias, neuroticism have prevailed. Through time they have undergone mutations, reaching a metamorphosis into substance with a form of demonic appearance.

When all hope is lost, in adults pessimistic and fatalistic attitudes, only in the innocence but also purity of a child can humanity seek salvation.

Spectaculus is a shy little boy, with a child’s purity, yet with a fighting spirit and decisiveness of an adult. Under his modest appearance hide the power and the will of a free spirit.
He is the last chance for a turnover in history. Only he possesses the ability to deter and eliminate human evils and give hope to people.
In a Spectacular head to head encounter, he challenges all of humanities evils by provoking the greatest ethical dilemma of all times...

Ok guys and gals, that was it!
Thanks to everyone who past by and chimed in, gave your thoughts and suggestions.
Best of luck to all the entrants, see you round in a next challenge I hope...

The story may seem a bit too heavy, but I think adds to the humorous light approach of the image, giving an exaggerated narrative style.
Hope you like it.
Bye for now...
