[ORIGINAL POST FROM 09/08/05:]

Preliminary sketch for a piece I'm doing for the Alice in Wonderland contest over at Eatpoo.com. So far I've only blocked out the basics, but feel free to critique and give good ideas.
Photoshop and wacom, around an hour so far.

Just as you said the second one definitely has a lot more depth. Keep it up this looks like its gonna be great.

Sweet! I like the second one especially well. The composition is much stronger and the mood of the image draws me in more. I can't wait to see this completed.

Best,

I like where this is going. The second sketch feels a lot more 'friendly' than the first. In the first sketch it seems as if Alice is about to become the caterpillars snack (I bet he has the munchies).

Today's update:

Thanks guys, appreciated.
I'd like the caterpillar to seem a bit intimidating, but I went a bit too far in the first sketch. But I'd like to get the feeling across that Alice isn't completly sure about the situation. I've shrunk her a bit in the new version, to emphasize the size of the caterpillar and make him bigger.
Feel free to crit or come with good ideas.

Wow, this is nice. I like the atmosphere you've pulled off with the lighting, very mysterious and a bit scary. I'm really grossed out by caterpillars (even the one John Tenniel did in the original illustrations creeps me out a bit), but I really like how yours turned out :)

Hmm, I was just thinking it'd be cool if you added little traily mossy bits to the toadstools or something; in such a dark covered place it'd fit in, but then in your most recent one the colours look a bit drier.

Post more!

i really like the brighter tone of the 2nd original (not your latest ) It gives it a warmer feel, and your new one feels duller.

Thanks for the crits! You're right about the bits of toad stool and stuff, Moonlantern. I'll look into it. :)
Newest version. Been messing around with the proportions of things. Excuse the smudgy look around stuff, that will be removed.

Argh...haven't had the time to look into this image lately, but I managed to do an update tonight. Messed around with the layout and lighting yet again...who knows, perhaps I'll actually start detailing it soon. *sigh*

I really like the palette--it feels very moody. I feel like a bit too much of the caterpillar's head is cropped out in the two latest versions. I think a crop halfway between your version of 9/9 and the current version would be better. Can't wait to see this finished.
