You do use a reference for this drawing, i've already seen this "character" and in the same pose.

It's based on a digital painting did by a chinese or japanese guy.

please quote him

yup,ok,i'll do that....it's one of the most briliant pictures i've ever seen...i have it in a paper picture format and it's one of my favorite pictures...you're sure it's digital???? thought it was a simple black and white artphoto...i'm also using other pictures due to the lack of models..one with a girl with freckles and one with black hair with red strands..oh and also...i think i'l make her have pale skin...but a lot of thanks to the man that took or made this picture. It's one of my FAVs!!

hey OrO go here http://www.planetphotoshop.com/tutorials_effects.html

and look for the tutorials called

Square to Round:Easy SPheres (javascript:popUp('tutorials/PeteBauer118.html'))

Reflections on Reflections, Part 1 (javascript:popUp('tutorials/PeteBauer61.html'))

Reflections on Reflections, Part 2 (javascript:popUp('tutorials/PeteBauer61.html'))

maybe that will give u an insight on how to create realistic reflections on a round surface.

i have been admiring this thumbnail but didn't take the time to open it up and leave a comment yet. I like your start and you are quite brave to do glass and reflections! Those things in themselves can be spectacular. One comment for improvement however: the hair on your character is a bit chunky. To keep an even flow in the hair try looking at where the light will lay instead of how the hair groups itself. However, if you are going for a chunky look, which is cool too, perhaps you could "funkify" it by adding some dark streaks or something fun? Anyway, like where this is going. Lots of time left but it will probably be over before you know it! Goodluck

OrO
09-22-2005, 08:57 AM
first of all thanks for the visit and most of all the comment..i don't get that to often around here..i wanted to go for the chunky hair look and i'll see how it looks with your sugestions...i've been looking at pictures of glass spheres, cracked glas and frosty glass all night (it's morning here in Romania) and i think i'll go to sleep soon:wise: if you have any experience in painting reflections and stuff some advice would be most welcome.thx again for the comment and good luck to you too:thumbsup:

helo helo ORO. first id like to thank you for passing by my entry. about being a father - its one of the greatest things that could happen to a person - i dont care what other people say. i have a lovely baby girl named caelyn. im sure you know what i mean - youve got someone very special too. :D

NOW - about my two cents for yout entry.
1. over-all the cinematics are great - with the reflection thing
2. id suggest more obviuos lighting - since there was a large explosion - then light would be hitting her face from the viewers pov. her right side would have a bit more shadows or bluish light from the earth
3. yup lose the safety line
4. are you doing the cracks on a different layer?

that would be it for now. very good progress (im terribly slow). will be back. cheers:thumbsup:

W-I-L
10-05-2005, 06:02 PM
hey mate... this concept is really good. love the idea.

i would have to say that the light on the face needs to reflect tha of the explosion. The part of teh face toward the explosions needs more light... and the rest oif the face will need alot more shadows on to counter that. Make the explosion reflected in her eye as well... not a deatiled image obviously.. just put some of that orange warm colour in there. .... aslos maybe you can try having her mouth slightly more open... i imagine taht her mouth would open in shock as she turned to see the explosion.

keep pushing it... loving it so far.:applause:

first of all i'd like to thank you both for posting here..your advice comes when i most need it..i was kind of in a painters block..as you can see not many people visit me and again i'd like to thank you :)

jugeras: yup,i doooo..i'll have to work more on the reflection though,i know..i'm gonna start work on the lighting tommorrow, regarding the line i was having my doubts too so i think i will dump it..yess the cracks are on a different layer ,why?

W!L: i havent come to the serious lighting part yet but this is very good advice, about the eyes i was thinking about the reflections and i will do that and i'll see what i can do about the lips

feel free to come visit again and thx a loot:bounce:

what can i say...expanded particle falloff in reflection on black visor..more detail to rope in reflection..deleted rope in front..reflection of explosion in eyes..more color to face...gonna have to start work on lighting and more detail and some other stuff i haven't thought off but know it should be there..

hi, picture is looking great although i think there are a couple of things you can improve.

you should make the reflections in glass more curvy. They look too flat to me. (maybe you should experiment with spherize and 3d transform) and some reflections of the glass itself > http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/contrib/tutorials/GlassTutorial_001/_contents/BrazilGlass_001_files/finalhdri.jpg( the black and white lines/curves in the glass) And you should ad some thickness to glass, because now there isn't any thickness at all. O and you should make the cracks a bit sharper.

The relfections in the eye look really amazing, but the rest of the eye misses some depth. try Enayla's eye tutorial (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=227727)and the eye will look great.

Last point, you should ad some ad some yellow/orange reflections of the explosion to the face and spacesuit so it will pop out the blue/black space. I hope you find my critic usefull. Good luck

OrO
10-07-2005, 06:53 PM
thx a loot for the crits..i will take them into consideration especialli the reflection stuff first and then i'll tend to the eyes..there is no thickness there because there is no glass there :D i haven't painted it yet..i paint by mood..for exemple if today i want to paint the suit i will do that and nothing else...i haven't found the will to paint the glass yet..but your links will help me a loot..thx for the creative crits and the visit..good luck

Hi OrO. Nice Update but paint more and more.
My opinions:

1. I think If there are some explosion there you need to give the girl another feeling, isn't it?.
2. If you made some shadows on his hair, why don't put some shadows in her face. That'll give you another impression of dimensions.

That's all for today.

Hi! It seems to me your work is very unusual! And one remark. I think that the fire must not be reflected in the right eye. Your image don't look too dark! Good luck! :)

OrO
10-15-2005, 02:10 PM
thanks yup..i think you're right..in what way unusual?? i use a computer for painting and another to send on the internet..the one i paint one has a samsung flat monitor that makes the colors look a loooot more vivid and bright...when i saw it on the other one i was fightend because it was to dark :D i just have to see and do some more tests..thx for the crit the visit and good luck to you too:bounce:

elmasfeo
10-15-2005, 03:31 PM
mmm... I don't think it's too dark

it's looking very good, oro! good job!
maybe I would make the cracks in the cristal more subtle, like something you wouldn't notice on first sight... and less blurry...
I find the helmet perspective a bit odd... the curve it makes at the right and left halves look different...I think it could help if you expanded the canvas, draw a rough sketch on how the whole helmet would look like if you saw it complete, and then go back to your normal canvas size...

good luck!

10-15-2005, 03:55 PM
well, I cannot say which one looks better...this last one is brighter, maybe too much, but with such a great lightsource as an explosion it would be normal to have it quite bright... what you might need now IMO is more contrast between light and dark areas...

Hi! Have you tried to change the "proof setup"? When i have my display drivers installed my images looks alot darker in PS.. If i change my proofsetup to "monitor rgb" it looks normal.. I havent got my drivers installed right now so i dont have that problem anymore. You can find this option under, "view" / "proofsetup" /, in PS. Note that this only change the way you see the image and it doesnt change the image itself...

Good luck

Hi Oro :)

I love the concept! I have always wanted to do something like this, but failed before, so i know its hard.

Some advice:

Dont use grayscale colors in your piece, it will really ruin the other colors.
Make the reflections a bit more subtile, also the visor should be more visible. Because now the reflected explosion looks like a small explosion in the ear

First make a transparent base color . Then add the explosion on it, perhaps even use a layer blending mode.

When painting, try using the same amount of detail and sharpness for the whole piece.
Now it looks a bit cluttered.
And add more shadows and highlights, to give everything some more depth.

I wish you good luck mate, and thx for the replies on my work :)
Cheers Kam

Great progress since last time. Good luck! I see your image as a LCD screen of a digital camera lost in space right after that explosion, reflected in that girl's helmet. I think it is more spectacular to find in space a camera still on, with a image like that as the last photo, than just an explosion.

Ok..final coloring..work on detail..gathering everithing..
My vision of spectacular is this one:
Let's say by chance you are an astronaut in space and at one moemnt the sun explodes, your lifeline (cable)breaks and you are left drifting helplessly through space..going further and further away from your spaceship. The blast from the explosion has cracked your glass bubble helmet and air is slowly exiting the closed chambre. And as it gets colder and colder and you drift off into space, your bubble geting frosted, you think..could it get any worst? if one could gather all of this into one image it would really lookc spectacular..:D

hey OrO, I really like your concept...but, your last update is your final coloring? c'mon, I was waiting for more details like the eyes... I'll really glad if you add more detail, for example, 'bluring' the facial lines, or improve the eyebrow... the reflect in the head looks nice, but maybe it needs a slight color variation, mmm... between black and blue... little changes that can give it a tridimencional look.

I know that it's your work, and you can make whatever you want, I only express my point of view...

hi oro!
the concept you have here is very cool. you also worked in very nice accents like the reflections and other neat details. try to pay the shading/higlighting/texturing the same allover attention, for example a nice trick on making skin look realistic is to paint a few highlights sharp and clear, mostly around the eyes, nosetip and around lipcontours in the center, where they are the sharpest, also cheeks and chin, more slightly but still a bit of specularity :) the "finnishes" are the most fun part, it's like you have a diamond here, with a great potential, now, sharpen your piece up and polish out the fire it has in it!

here's a few sharpen tricks you might try. for gradients around the lines, pick up the linecolor, and then, with a hard brush on low oppacity, make a smove transition and let it fade out.
on the other side of the line, where light hits the skin, pick uo your skin highlight color, and work away from the line to zero opacity. if you suffer on know where to set the accents, make a digiphoto of yourself or a friend, and make sure you have the flashlight on.
that wont actually result a beautifull pic but a good reference to make out the specular highlights :)

for metalhighlights, a nice way to go for specular highlights is to use paintmode "colordodge". use that with a white or very light blue, and there goes shiny metal :)

a little tip on reflections: usually, they look good enough if you screen them on your reflecting object. darken might look on the glass like the skin has some unexplained shadow on it .

finnishing white and lightfx best come to take effect when you use them focussed and decent, thats like the flavour, the spice, the bouquet on the top, try levelcorrect your image a bit to get more midtones. Another way you can do that is to pick lightblue in your case, or whatever surrounds your object and overpaint your white slowly with it on darkenmode, to reduce the bright areas, and then, when you have it where you want it, take your white again and light a few areas and brilliant highlights up again. that actually helps a lot to set accents on important objects, like the spaceshuttle and the airtube, and the stars around the shuttle may fade a bit but the eye then focusses on the more important objects :)

keep up your great work, hope some of theese tricks are usefull for your work here.
hehe, i agree with ducklator about its a lil bit early to already quit the game :)
rock on mate and bring out the full potential your piece has in it.
keep it up!
Cheers :beer::wip::buttrock:

It's looking good. Although you may want to consider a little change to the cheek; reflections tend to only lighten things, not darken them.

Good luck.

Great work! You are almost done?! You lucky thing! I really like the concept of this image and remember thinking when you had first posted that I wish I had thought of it. Hehehehe.

I like the colours you have used and the expression on the girl's face. You might want to add some of the explotion colour to her face since it would be a really bright light shining on her. Also, to add a little more detail, you might want to add a key-line of blue on the far edge of her face to show a hint of the earth blue light reflection. Just a thought!

Good luck! (And I hope you don't have anymore computer troubles) :)

E misto! :banghead: :banghead:

Picture this! You are an astronaut out in space, returning back to the shuttle and at one moment in time all hell breaks loose.Te Sun explodes sending shockwave after shockwave, tearing your lifline and cracking your glass shield. And as everything goes silent and time seems to slow down you think that this can't be happening to you.If one could take a picture that would round up the feelings and expression of the astronaut and also the events unvailing, the smallness of man in this vast Universe, that picture would be the essence of spectacular.
Now,at the end of the contest i would like to say that i have learned a loot during these months ,not only on my own but thanks to the help of others, and i would like to thank these wonderfull people for opening the door a little bit more for me to come in and showing me the way to become a better cg artist.I also would like to thank the crew behind this event for making this all possible.
I have left the best for last because this is not only related to the contest.I would like to thank my girlfriend Alexa for being there for me when i didn't have the strength to go on,for being my countinous source of inspiration and motivation not only in the field of painting, but in every aspect of life and most of all for loving me so much. This image is dedicated to you, baby.I love you!
