I just played it. Feels a lot like AoE 2 (that's good) but the 3d stuff makes navigation a little confusing (that's bad). Nevertheless, I'd say this game could totally rock, especially in multiplayer with VoIP. Must buy, for sure :)

The demo looks great! - but after playing it for two hours yesterday I realized that I'm
soo tired of the RTS-genre. It is the same old gathering and pouring out soldiers by
clicking all over the map like an alcoholic on crack!!. Naah! It's better to wait for CIV4!!
but that's just my humble opinion! - the rest of you enjoy!- it's a good game if you like RTS!

...Naah! It's better to wait for CIV4!!
...

Agreed. I can't wait for Civ IV. In fact, just last night I decided to reinstall Civ III and Alpha Centauri (requires patch for Win XP) on my CGI-only laptop to prepare myself for Civ IV.

But, being an AoE fan I'll probably succumb to AoE3 as well. I'm abstaining from the demo, tho'. I want a fresh experience when the full-meal-deal gets released since it's been quite a while since I got over my addiction of AoE2.

When are Civ IV and AoE3 being released, anyway?

Age of Empires is my all time favorite game. I have really been looking forward to this for a long time. I’m not much of fan of that particular time in history, but I’m looking forward to downloading this as soon as I get home.

- I don't play very many games.
- But when I do, its almost always RTS and AOE is at the top of my list.
- Thanks for posting this!

wow..what a disappionment that was.

Pretty bad art work as well, I expected more. The cut scenes are just unbearable, and the little still shots it looks like someone rigged and posed these people right out of school, I mean that one explorer girl the little pic of her, the arm is so straight....couldn't someone just bend it so it looks a tad more natural...arghh..that drove me nuts..lol

All in all I expected more.

I had a chance to download it and try it out, I feel disappointed with the demo too. With all the games I have been playing lately this one feels outdated, even with all the nice added physics.

They did fake the screenshots, didn't they?

Before:

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/067/reviews/925735_20050309_screen005.jpg

And after:

That's quite a difference. Nevertheless, the gameplay still rocks, it totally feels like the old game, so I don't worry about it too much. It still looks great and, more importantly, feels great, too.

its totally dissapointing

For start the GUI is huge , covering as much as half the screen with no way to scale it down, unless vital gameplay options are turned off

The villagers drop off the resources automatically without the need of actually walking, literally cutting the effectiveness of harrasing the enemy's economy.

Second and most importantly, the cannons and grenediers have no friendly fire !?!?!?(there goes the monitoring of ur units and the speciality of a cannon).

Falconets(a canon designed to kill units) can kill musketeers, general infantry and cavalary in a few shots, making them without Friendly fire extraordinary deadly

The generals' bonuses at each age upgrade are at 35%(and thats a big amount...) useless
Age 3 and u get 6 longbowmen ?????

The cards idea is nice, but badly implemented.
The incoming cargoes, are small (at early ages as much as 2 peasants !) and too often such as killing their uniquness.

In fact, i rate trade routes importance higher than harvesting stuff on the map.
You dont need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that people will turtle

Loosing the fort =GG, pretty much making it a dramatic building (as u cant build it again)
Good for SP,Bad for MP i presume
I hope they give an option for this

And as someone already mentioned... screenshots of past do not equal the real screenshots

I have AOE 1, AOE gold and AOK 2 collectors edition and expansion , AOM Collectors edition and its expansion, and this really doesnt feel like the quality of the age series... rather as a rushed to be published game

AOEII is my all time favorite game but unfortunately this new versiion(at least the demo) won't run on my system. Apparently my video card, a Quadro 900XGL, is incompatible- I get an error about DirectX when AOE loads but yet I do have the proper version which passes all tests in DX Diag. I'll be interested to see any replies from others with non-gaming cards whoc give it a try.

Well I got upgraded to xp for this game and I have to agree with those saying WTF? This game just doesn't seem to live up to AOE 1 or 2, both games I loved and played alot. I don't really like the new 3d graphics, I kinda think AOE 2 looked better!

Dissapointed :(

Well, I'm still looking forward to Dawn of War Expansion and BFME 2! :)

Yes they did, I havent notice it till you say it. I know that the game stills rock but it sucks that they lie.
Age 2 was a pretty interesting game I hope this one is better.

Flashback! FLASHBACK!

*taka!* :) ahhw man, Populus: The Beginning. Now there was a game. Makes me all melancholic, thinking about it. Fact that I played Sacrifice today helps in that as well.. those were the days.
Thinking about it, really, RTS is underinnovated, from the games I can see. Then again, so is every genre, really.

It would seem so. I was able to get it to look better by tweaking the settings (apparently the game uses lower resolution textures for 1024x768 and under) but I haven't been able to get it to the level of the screenshots shown at E3.

Do you have a widescreen monitor? My boss was having a problem that sounds similar to yours cause there was a glitch that had to do with his widescreen. So you might check out the faq on the site about that.

What! Doesn't work on Windows 2000 :( :( :(

yes it does, to get it to work ok win2k:

1) Start aoe3trial.exe
2) Its creates a new folder (is_(and some number) at

c:\documents and settings\<user name>\local settings temp

3) wait for error, but don't click ok
4)copy Age of Empires III Trial.msi from the temp filder to c:\
5)rename it to aoe3.msi
6)go to the command prompt and type

msiexec /a C:\aoe3.msi /qn TARGETDIR="C:\<anything you want>"

Wait.

7) Start c:\<anything you want\Age of Empires III\age3.exe

if it comes up with an error box with nothing in it, you need to install msxml4 (the 5 mb ish file) from microsoft.

Holy c..., is that the real UI ?! Why does it takes half the screen !?

I'm holding my breath for Supreme Commander (from the creator of Total Annihilation):

Yeah, those with either widescreen monitors, or two monitors setup to form one desktop, will find they have this problem. Easily sorted (although quite why we have to in the first place, I don't know) - head to your My Documents folder, and then into My Games, and drill down to your /Age of Empires 3 Trial/Users/ directory.Open up NewProfile.xml and on the optiongrfxres line change your resolution to 1024x768.

I found this value was set to 1280x768 on my PC, changing it then let me in. Not entirely worth it though ;)

i was seeing this AOEIII several days ago. i'll have to play it but from what i've seen graphics are quite interesting for rts, though i don't know if i agree with those camera angles for an rts...

I'm holding my breath for Supreme Commander (from the creator of Total Annihilation):

they have a great game to measure up too.. that really is a great, i've been waiting as well. i was really into it away back when.. unpacked the game files and and added my own unit models and coding additions and modifications... :P . alot of fun though quite tedious back then for higher poly (i used pure text input modeler - no mouse support.. among other things) :)

So guys!

The verdict?

I still think the better of CIV4 - What's you're opinion?

I've played AOE I & II and I think this one is just as good as the last one. I've been playing it for the past month with two of my friends and we're having a blast (and it's getting to be a little addictive).

Good: There's cool unique abilities for each civilization, love the explorer/treasures and cards ideas, joining up with native americans, particle effects and explosions

Bad:the AI is a bit weak when you play in water maps, some of the civilizations are a little unbalanced, cannons are somewhat overpowered

Ugly: Microsoft made this game WinXP only so "hacking" it is required if you use Win2k.
They also have a bug that won't let you join other people's games if you are behind a router.
