I am a Maxon C4D user. I've always liked C4d - that is until I decided to get heavy in to Character Animation.

Should I switch over to Maya or is there a better program to use for results driven CA???

I was planning on putting in a lot of hours this winter to develope my CA skills - but I want to make sure that before I invest a huge chunk of my life - I have great tools to use.

You should really get the demo/learning version and see for yourself...Maya is excellent for CA but it has its own style of working that may or may not be to your liking. Especially it is more script driven then other apps, so you will need to be comfortable with at least rudimentry coding/scripting to get the best use out of it. Another app with almost all the power of Maya but with a lesser learning curve is XSI. You cant go wrong with doing CA in either of these.

for CA many use motion builder, maya, XSI, and most big studios use a custom in-house CA app... so what is your point? should he write his own CA program? ; )

He could if wanted to....with Maya's MEL scripting.

Oh for Christ sake... Maya is one of the most growing programs in the industry and is used by many big studios. Yes, noone uses it without modifications and they do have their own developed software. We could start a war on who does and do not use it, but I'd rather not. Knowing your way around Maya is useful no matter where you are going and animation tools in Maya are very good. So if you think about a strong package with good animationtools and already consider Maya, I see no reason why you should not go for it.
