View Full Version : Tiffany's Great Escape
PTimm 09-08-2005, 07:33 AM Here is a new one I'm starting. I got inspired by those old "No Rules" folder art. I was wondering if any of you guys had tips on painting water? Also I was thinking of giving the girl a harpoon and putting some crossed out shark symbols below her surf board...and yeah any other crits would be cool. I really wanna make this one look good!

Here's my update. only spent an hour, but the waves were freaking frustrating me. I think they look better here...so no one said if i should put a harpoon in her hand or not? I'm also thinking maybe a confused looking seagul flying by...too much?

yeah, that's cool, but I guess you should try adding a different color on the board, the colors are too much mixed with the water. But that's just an idea....

This looks really good so far and I love the concept.
Go with the shark stamps on the board -- great idea.
The shark coming up over the wave looks conspicuously odd, but that might be the effect you're going for. If you want a more natural look I think a shark would be too heavy for that. Maybe if the surfer were higher on the wave she's riding and the shark's coming up from below right?
I like how you're doing the sea foam on that top wave but the shadow below the lip kills the illusion of water. I think there should be a bit of a highlight along the lip of that wave. Beyond that I'd get plenty of reference pics.
Lastly, for a weapon I'd suggest a sledgehammer. :wip:
I'm thinking of the survival tip that you should punch a shark in the nose if it attacks you.
Plus it's just such an odd thing to carry on a surfboard. Spear guns are so. . . passe'.

Hey thanks for the ideas! as far as the shadow on the lower lip, i totally agree. a sledge hammer huh?!:scream: we'll see. i might just leave her without a weapon...but ill definitely put them shark stamps in! ok well thanks for your time!

Hey man, I like this image. That would scare the $h!t out of me to see that behind me. I think a weapon and the crossed out sharks are both cool ideas for this. It gives her that edge of legend. "Tiffany the Shark Slayer".
Showing the sharks shape through the wave helped alot with the look of the water. Don't be afraid to make your highlights crisp and white hot. If you look carefully at photographs of water with sun gleaming off the surface there is alot of contrast.
I don't know about a sledge hammer but what if you had some like 2000 LB test fish line coiled on her hip and attached to a great big gaff she carries in her hand? I'd also put a divers knife in a sheath strapped to her calf.
Keep posting.

Thanks for the idea! I think the knife would be good, along with the line. I was also talkin with a buddy, and thought of putting hooks, scars, and maybe a harpoon in the shark, to show its been in a few battles? Also I'm terrified of painting skin, can you guys give me pointers? Special brushes i should use in photoshop? Blending teqniques? Thats the main reason why I haven't touched the girl yet.

My latest update. Still thinkin about the skin tones. Tell me if the anatomy is ok, I think it is, but then again I've been staring at this image for a while. Um...the sky is boring me, I was thinking of clouds. Any other pointers?

I finally got some time to come back to this one. I decided her old pose sucked, and used some reference from Blue Crush for the new one, i think i might change her expression...

I worked on her a lil' bit more. I decided I couldnt make the "crotcth" area look like anything except her rump so I put some board shorts on her. I also liked the comp better flipped the other way.

hey Andy -- I'm a little unclear about whcih direction she is moving... just tell me you are using a photograph and I'll let it go, but I think if she is moving fast her knees would be driving the same direction. I liked the shadom of the shark inside the wave. Her face... well, you need to try a few different mouth poses, I think. And the bikini top is still unconvincing... remember the white dress you just made and the idea of sheer or thin fabric -- I dunno about you but if I had that particular fish behind me my nipples would be hard, for sure! Board is too thick. This is a hard pose to imagine, so you need to be thinking about how to disguise things that don't work well -- hide behind spray, darken, out of focus, stuff like that. More, of course, but I know you aren't done. Go faster, looser, save the very very end for the tight stuff. More colors in the pray but use the same brush, it works.
I'm not at school on wednesday so just stay home and work.

This is a new sketch idea, though I'm not sure I'm going to use it.

The reason why it looks odd is the angle of the shark more than anything. When sharks attack they come up from under their targets, whereas this one looks like it's surfing on the same wave she is.
Hi
instead of repainting the shark altogether you could also raise the water level to above its head. Make it a big tunnel (or tube?) which the shark is piercing through. Maybe increase the dimension of the pic.

I did a little bit more work. I think all I have to do is tighten up the rendering and then I'm done, but let me know what you think.

alrighty, thanks for the advice so far. I think Im almost done. i tried a spherize effect to change things up a bit, and then painted the seems and what not. i also cropped the image, though i might have to bring some more canvas to the left, i think her arm may be a little short. let me know if it works, or should i junk the effect and go back to normal?
