I want to depict the personal war a single man wages against the odds, and compress it into a fleating moment. These are some rough sketches, obviously subject to change. Backstory:

The Ark glided over the valley, shaking apart the glacier beneath it. A lone mountain climber sprints after the distant behemoth, seeking to board it and conquer it, thinking of it only as another mountain to scale.

Playing with composition. Not sure how I want this to look quite yet, and I'm thinking about the camera angle, how to keep the focus on the man but demonstrate the epic scale.

Hey Stanley,

Very nice scetching style. :thumbsup:

The design of the ship looks very good but I think the back part of it needs some more attention. It seems not to fit properly compared to the very well established front part. Maybe I could be worth it to check how it looks by widening the back part.


Im really looking forward how this thread will develop.

I'm still not quite settled on an idea just yet. I'm taking my time with this.

So far I've grown very partial to the top two ideas.

What do you guys think?

very nice concept,with a great skill of drawing...i am intresting in to your style too much.....let me know where i can finde a great tutorial for digital painting ?

the second scetch looks very promising > the perspektive angle gives a quite spectacular view. The first one is also very well but Im not sure if the mashine will pocket the whole image too much in a rendered stage.

Hey man, great concept sketch of yours, that concept sketch 2 reminds me of the "Captain Flam" intro (french title... might be captain future in english), that lil girl riding a bike on foreground with a spaceship passin by on the background, really cool concept, very japanimation style, really dig the contrast especially from the side angle. You might wanna try to get one of the episods somewhere to check out the rythm of the action, design of the series sux a bit, I mean it grew old, but that very specific sequence in the intro might be interresting for your work here.

Thanks everyone for your responses, I'm still hotly debating over which image to go with.

As far as tutorials for digital painting, I'm not really sure. The best advice I can give is observe in detail the artwork of various individuals who are good at it, and spend a lot of time sketching and drawing in traditional media. The concept artwork I posted here is either with a ball point pen or grey scale markers. There's no substitute for paper and writing/drawing implement to sharpen one's skills.

With observation, you slowly begin to decipher the technique and process behind the artists. Unless you are looking for actual technical information, which again I'm not so sure because I just hunt a hodge podge of tutorials on google mostly.

Test rendering and wireframe.

I started to model the mountain climber's head. I've decided to go with image 3, my instinct tells me that I can really do a lot with that one.

thats cool clean box modeling :).. just one comment the corner of the mouth looks odd ... maybe if u sharpen it a little bit.

nice concept drawings ..keep it up mate:thumbsup:!

Just a little update, I'm leaving for LA tommorow for a week, so I won't be able to get to this until I return. I (hopefully) fixed a few subtle anatomical issues with the neck and corner of the mouth.

there are a few heavy lines around the mouth, eyes and jaw that might need softening, also it looks as if his jaw is currently pressed slightly forward, and his upperlip needs to be fuller,

shoulders look slightly too big but that might just be the perspective and that i dont have anything else to look at

i love the idea and direction your going in, keep up the good work.

Woah, I come back from LA and take a look at my work and I think "ick, lots of tweaking to do..."

The anatomy is not exactly impressive and I do indeed have to go in and sculpt some stuff. It's funny how when you're in the thick of it you sometimes forget to step back and look at what you're modelling.

Thanks for the input Chris, I'll definitely take it into consideration!
