Putting down some initial ideas. They are all somehow influenced by images I have seen...At the moment some of the ideas that I think are strongest for this theme are: movement, perspective, light, scale and abstraction

Hey, Andreas! Welcome back!
I fully expected you to do something with some city being utterly destroyed or something... I thought of it myself and shuddered to think of all of those buildings, and then thought, "Andreas could do that!" :-) So, buildings or no, good luck and have fun!

I decided to pick the sketch I liked most and refine it a bit more. However, I didn't manage to convey my idea correctly, since this looks like a huge massacre. My idea is exactly the opposite. I want to transmit life and freedom, perhaps associated with something as brutal as an bomb, but in an oneiric kind of way, like an explosion of life.
I bet everyone already had that 'floating in the air dream', where you somehow feel alive and capable of everything. That is the kind of spectacularity I would like to portrait but in a huge environment shared by millions of people at the same time. I also don't want to relate to any orthogonal space coordinate system. There should be no vertical nor horizontal, just depth.
...well, just a thought anyway.
I have to admit on first viewing your last post it looks like a really intense image of mass carnage (perhaps it's the red?), and the people look like they have been blown from a central core of some kind. It's visually very hard hitting, but I think that can be a good thing - perhaps if you turned the foreground character to face the camera (so to speak) you could experiment with facial expressions and body poses to get the true feel you want.
Hope I'm helping, the concept looks great and I think you should end up with something really stunning!

Hi Andreas,
I think M477 said it best. For the effect you are tring to achieve, the facial expressions will definitely help define the feeling of enlightment. As far as color, I personally dont mind the scheme you are currently working with. I know that generally brighter cooler colors help convey a pleasing moods but I think it would make the image look even more interesting working with warmer tones and strong shadows. Whatever you decide, I think your concept is great and I look forward to see how you progress with it. Good luck!

Hi Andreas, good to see you in this challenge. :)
I like the concept and it's an unusual colour scheme to convey a sense of uplift and exhilaration. Perhaps a lighter one would feel 'lighter'? It would be nice to have one of the closest figures turned to face the camera so that the viewer can identify with the people in the pic. This would also help the viewer to understand the concept since they could read the facial expression.
Going by the body language alone, it does look like they've been bombed!
Hi, ND! Tudo bem?
I like the concept, the swirl of people floating around made me think of a concept for that: Mermaid Party! Imagine a crowd of mermaid in a festival type environment! Good work, C ya!

I detailed my previous step further, but I started disliking it more and more...then, by accident, I turned the figures layer off and was left with a nice blue background with some strange monolithic structures. I thought, how much more pleasing this image was, without all the clutter.
Now I am aiming for a nature-related spectacular event, with those wonderful translucency effects on ice structures. The explorers in front were inspired by some scenes of "Alien" where the crew make their first contact with the crashed alien spaceship. The huge scale difference presented in the movie really emphasizes the otherworldy environment, something I am trying to mimic here. I still have to figure out some story...

Playing with lighting coming thru ice is a marvelous idea and the composizion u have at the moment is absolutly great. I'd just play a bit more with the position of the ppl, but other than that, no crits at all. I think its one of the best ideas in the challenge so far.

Well, I had this idea the other day while watching people's behaviour on the subway. Althought I saw it here in Lisbon, I believe this behaviour to be universal. Basically I am taking the running-to-catch-the-train-avoiding-people-on-your-path behaviour and turn it into something extreme. Imagine two trains, completely full stopping at exacly the same time at the same platform, and everybody from one train wanting to get on to the other one and vice-versa...and of course, everyone is running like mad because the doors only stay open for a few seconds. Imagine the mayhem!...taken to the extreme. I've been looking at Rugby photos and I think they fit the theme nicely, but instead of having built athletes competing you have average everyday kind of people: executive with laptop, kid with IPod, babe in short skirt, fat lady, mother with three kids, nerd, ... bumping, evading each other...throwing themselves against one another...like a MOSH, with gracefulness.
Here are a few initial sketches.

Thanks guys. I'm glad you all seem to like the idea as much as I do. The problem now is finding the right way to present it. My main problem, I think, is how to portray the people's interaction with one another. Are they colliding, evading or both? One thing that I will surely introduce is some kind of painted motionblur, like the great Challenge Cover Illustration, which inspired me a lot to do this one. I also want to make the composition more or less symmetrical, to give both sides of the "urban armies" the same importance. Let's see what happens.

Well, this is my first decent concept. There are several aspects which I would like to point out:
The color palette is somehow reminiscent of the early decades of the 20th century, with subdued brown tones.
The crowd in the back is intentionally backlighted, clearly defined by the silhouette.
I am using sidelighting to give some variation to the symmetrical composition.

yes! you got it! plz do that one! :D
maybe you could even fit in someone on the left or right side ... very close to the camera with a fierce expression ... maybe a businessman with that black stripe under the eye like you see in footbal or rugby players faces ...or two people doing some kind of shoulder-ramm heehee ... just silly ideas sry... and i say it again PLZ do that one

09-15-2005, 10:54 AM
Without a doubt, that last concept is amazing, stick with it! All those really strong lines and the rush of human bodies, wow, really grabs you by the throat! If you can pull off that sort of motion blur you get in a lot of photographs of this ilk, it will look quite amazing. And the palette is wonderful too.
Hrm... just ideas buzzing through my head, but what if you had that kind of rushing abou, and then one lone figure in the middle of it simply standing still? Hm, or maybe thats just messing this really good idea about too much. :/
Either way great start, can't wait to see more.

Thanks everyone for the support. I am glad you find the idea interesting and I think you identify with what I am trying to convey here.
I changed the camera angle so you get a clearer and wider view of what is going on here. In the front you see man-to-man interaction and in the background you gradually see more of a mass interaction.
I also decided to introduce a more dramatic lighting with warmer, end of (working) day colors, to illuminate the (supposedly) dramatic scene.
Thanks again, for the supportive feedback.
Hi again, ND! It's looking better, but I feel the foreground needs a bit more light, maybe some artificial light. The afternoon color makes perfect sense! What-a-rush-hour!

looks too symmetrical at the moment. You might want to use rule of thirds or golden section here...
Looking good, Andi!
Tudo fixe? I think you could try out a more raised point of view, like watching a LOTR scene from above the armies' heads. You could also catch a bit of the roof structure if you use a taller picture format, this could give an impression of space.
It always makes me mad when I'm exiting the train and a bunch of dumbasses are blocking my way, eager to get in! I just want to tackle them in the way you depicted here!

Hi again Andreas, I'm not sure I prefer the higher POV. Great idea, as usual, but I think it would be way more effective if there were close-up elements as well as distant ones. The previous sketch is good, but too symmetrical and centrally composed for my liking. You did one a while back (post 56? I've forgotten) which really had a lot going for it.
I can't wait to see what you do with this. Very strong concept.
Hey, ND! How ya doin'?
I like the sense of space and depth you got in your latest sketch, but indeed you lose the close-up elements. Maybe somthing in the middle, close enough to the crowd, but still catching the mid to far background crowd.

2xbo - Thanks for pointing it out. I'm glad you like it.
Speaky - You're absolutely right. With the previous concept I gained some things but lost a lot more, like depth and integration of the viewer in the scene. I hope to have it back now. I also tried to break the symmetry a bit like you pointed out. Thanks again.

Looking for references on the web (specially the "Gare du Nord" in Paris) and going to one of our train stations here in Lisbon, I understood how I could dramatize the scene through strategic placement of openings to control the resulting light and shadows. I decided to build a 3d mockup model both for correct perspective and light study. I also tried different viewpoints since some of you pointed to the "too symmetrical" POV and came up with this offcenter one. Tell me what you think.
After making the render, it went through some heavy tweaking in Photoshop to control shadow/light and overall color. I think this will be my starting point for the painting. Any suggestions that could imply heavy modifications are welcome at this stage...

I am starting to develop overall detail without going too deep. Like this I always get a clear idea of the whole. The color palette is more or less reminiscent of the works by Peter de Sève (http://www.peterdeseve.com/). I am also adding a few props like banners and lighting. I will have to be careful in finding a balance between detail, readability and motion...

Thanks beelow and sh@ke...I wasn't sure if this new point of view would work, but I think I have your approval.
I flipped the canvas and changed the perspective after a suggestion of a friend, and I think it works much better. I also sharpened the image just for display.

The last one looks great! Would be cool if you add some more chaos, like in your previous sketches.. Maybe someone running on the others shoulders and stuff like that to make it more chaotic(and making them look more desperate to get across).. Looks fine like it is now too, depends on what you want to achieve..

I flipped the canvas back to the original position...it's hard sometimes to decide on horizontal flipping. One minute you love it, the next you start having your doubts. Anyway...I also stretched the whole canvas horizontally to infuse motion into the scene.
I started detailing the columns and the ceiling on separate layers. I guess I will have to give some unifying brushstrokes and filters in the end after flattening the image, in order to avoid the pasted look of the individual elements.
Hi ND! I like the mood in this one, and I agree that the horizontal stretching brings a sense of motion. I too would like to see people colliding, perhaps in the middle ground, while in the foreground they could still be looking at each other, looking furious and deranged!
Keep up the good work!:bounce:

Thanks guys...I'm glad you like it!
DrFx - Yo C...I decided to experiment with your suggestion...with the people in the middleground. It breaks the light "shaft" but I think it works better. Thanks, dude.
I did the ceiling from scratch, more or less and also added some ornamental/structural elements, going for Art Noveau embelishments.
I also tweaked some of the layers' value and colors.
Hey, glad to help! Btw, what on Earth are you doing awake at 2 AM? :scream:
Speaking of the light shaft, I like the lamps you did, but maybe they should be lit, it gives a sense of "dazzle", fo shizzle, plus the foreground is getting pretty dark! Good work on the ceiling arches!

Hi man! Just popping by to give u some compliments :) this is stil one of my favorites, with lots of dynamic and deep meaning (at least I see it that way). And Im glad that even technique will be the same class as the idea, so no worries for now. Keep up doing what u do best! Only one question... will there be anything up in the air? Above those ppl? some papers or trash, anything?

Thanks C and NinjaASSN. I'll try the lit lamps, alghtough I think they will look a bit confusing with all that natural light. And about the things in the air...I definitely put some things in later on...
My main change here was the format. It was getting too horizontal and claustrophobic. I also added some more colors to liven things up and changed the skylight to something more interesting (I hope)...

Great architecture!
Is this from a real place? Or you just came up with it? Trains and station looks absolutely great. Oh im hurting my head by just thinking how many characters your going to have to draw.
Colors and everything seem good. Maybe give the humans some other color clothes to stand out from the picture more? Or maybe not.
Keep it up! :bounce:

Started detailing the crowd. This is more or less the treatment I want to give them. Of course there is still a lot of cleaning to do...but I don't want to detail them much further...perhaps only the foremost ones.

Brilliant concept and exceptional composition.
With so many of the commuter gladiators carrying umbrellas, a hint of an electrical storm outside the station might stir things up a bit. Especially if a few of the mob were getting zapped with bolts, and catching fire.
Next time I ride the train, I'm suiting up in medeval steel and carrying a jousting lance.

I made a couple of changes to the ceiling...it seemed to make the scene too claustrophobic. I also detailed the crowd further. There were also a couple of perspective issues which I hope to have corrected. I added a couple of props. Finally, I changed the background and made the sun's glare more intense. I hope you like it.

and brilliant it is :D for sure.. those expressions on their faces r so well painted, I can almost hear their screaming and that rush and chaos. The only thing Im thinking about that could be improved is, to add some colors in it.. some complementary colors.. if u know what I mean. At the moment this pic is great but so monochromatic, all in violet tones. Maybe just in first plan use some green or yellow, and see what happens. Just a suggestion. good luck on finishing it!

7 days to go...I didn't like the outcome of the crowd so I went back to a previous version and pasted it in. I think it was the highlights on the heads and the way they distracted. I think that now the crowd works more like a... crowd.

FULL RESOLUTION IMAGE (http://andreasrocha.no.sapo.pt/CgChallenge/Violent-Needs.jpg)
Violent Needs
“Friday. 6:03 pm. Central Station.
It was one of those one in a lifetime moments, when the two afternoon trains arrived at exactly the same time and by some unexplainable coincidence every single passenger had to change trains and catch the one on the other side of the platform.
Everybody was crazy...the trains were already late and on a tight schedule. They would only stop for a few minutes, if not seconds. No one wanted to miss the train because that meant having to wait for the next one which would only arrive several hours later. On top of that, everybody was in a furious anger because they were all having the worst day of their lives. People were almost searching for an excuse to collide, to let go, to throw themselves violently against each other to feel alive. It was almost, like that day everyone felt some kind of violent passion for each other, something too big to be kept inside, something that was about to explode.
And then, it did...”
This idea grew after watching a simple daily event on the subway when people were ramming into each other in order to catch the train. It is a scene you see everyday in public transportation, concerts, football stadiums, everywhere where there is a gathering of masses. Apparently, it seems like we completely disregard people around us, but on the other hand, I think we also collide against each other because it is in our nature and it is almost like a basic need that makes us feel alive. Contemporary life favors alienation from each other which we seek to balance with violent “passionate” gatherings.
Regarding the composition, I sought dramatic end of day lighting with harsh light/shadow contrasts. Also, the viewpoint chosen is supposed to immerse the viewer in the action, while having an overall view of the crowd. Although I am referring to contemporary urban life I decided to depict a scene from the early 20th century. Somehow I think the scene more adequate for that period of modern life. I gave the characters umbrellas making it look like they were brandishing swords in a “Braveheart”-like sequence, almost like an urban battle. Finally, about the setting, it was heavily inspired on the Gare du Nord in Paris.
Thanks to everyone who took their time to watch the progress of the image and gave their feedback, both written and verbal. Good luck to everyone…and see you in the next Challenge.
