with this work, i'll try to illustrate an imagination rather that actual fact that's happening. it will portray an symphony orchestra kapellmeister in a culmination of the performance. it should look like a most tragic moment of the opera - with the performance up there on the stage (way too high that normally in life), and this is the moment when maestro holds his hands to prolong the saddest note. at this moment, he is completely interblended with the overal dark mood in this huge area; instead of the scene, he sees the actors much bigger up in the air, like summoned spirits, they're like fighting - and he, being a leader of the performance, with his baton, feels like a magician with a magical stick, having casted his most powerfull, most crushing spell…

i don't know if i'll be finishing the sketch to portray all of this - i'm not much a painter.

i wish all the other contestants good luck. myself, i silently hope i'll have much time and skills to complete my idea.

i'm trying not to hurry with modeling and want to be sure about the layout of the scene and character poses. also, i try to solve a puzzle - how to make spirits look bigger than maestro and yet keep the weight of the image at the bottom… corrections and suggestions would be a great help.

yes, you should somehow "look through" those dummies and spline guides, "seeing" floating drappery, tension in characters' mimics, particle effects - these all should add to what i expect to accomplish, an enormous energy wave up to the top.

Hello uiron, great composition. I like very much the feeling of it.
I dont understand why would you want the spirits to look bigger than maestro, but I think you can keep the weight of the image at the bottom if the spirits look like smoke or kind of blury... that way, even if they are bigger then the other characters, their weight would be lighter, I think :)

Great work so far! I like your concept. I especially like the angle of the camera. Are you going to provide an audience that is watching?

uiron
09-10-2005, 08:13 PM
no, audience is left on the back. i'm currently brainstorming, what to do with the musicians - i'd like surreal transformation of reality; i'm also thinking about open environment - as it's all maestro's imagination, maybe at that moment of culmination he sees no walls, but a… something moody i haven't thinked about yet.

and i also started doubting about sword fight scene - maybe i'll think about somewhat more inspiring conflict between two of them.

Great idea so far

I have a suggestion for the background... why do not make it as a painting of some environnment... the maestro is totally immerged in his "dream" and he sees all the scene... not only the actors... he sees a film projected on the walls of the opera...

Just my 2 cents to devlopp the idea and give you more work :D

Your concept are always very fine ! This last concept sketch are very good...
And I'm impatient to see the final image !!!

Maybe just a little suggestion, from the left translucent man, I ask if he isn't so near to the left arm of the orchestra conductor ?? And I think the same thing from the second character near of right conductor leg ?

Hello!!:bounce:

I like your concept and sketch, I think a surreal transformation can be cool, like Nomad saied "he is totally immerged in his "dream""... i think it can be nice. And perhaps let the wall in a kind of overlay, or superposition, but very light... just my opinion...

Hey Viktoras,

This is a very cool idea and your sketch is excellent. To me the spirit actors are too dominant , I would move them up a bit and more transparent , maybe make the image taller to accomodate this. Great job so far .

I'm impressed with this and am sure that you can pull it off. It will be cool to see all of these people with instruments and see a faint hint of the audience in the background. I also think that dramatic light of the stage and imagination portion will contrast nicely with the black background of the audience. Great sketch, great idea, and a very promising entry overall. Good luck!

big thanks to all for ideas and support, this lets me know i'm on a right path:]

ShkYo & mmoir: i'm still thinking about how spirits should look like, how big they are - only thing i'm sure of is that they should look like they are emerging from whirlwind and are personification of this whole power conductor feels. this should be the second most important thing in a picture after conductor, so, yes, i'll will need to think a lot, how to make them not so dominant.

gardogg: i'm almost sure i won't be doing audience. i don't know which is the main reason of this - maybe because audience is not potentially expressive, they do not shout, do not applause while orchestra is playing, they would just sit there far away, and do nothing. and, as i'm trying to look through conductors eyes - audience is least important thing for him at that moment. such are my thoughts about the audience:]

though i didn't finish purifying my idea, orchestra conductor is surely gonna be in this scene. so, took my hammer and chisel and here it is, rough model of his head. still unclean (eye/lip corners, oh god i never do it right) and nearly emotionless. will fix that, later.

nothing spectacular, again. as far as i can count, it's the fifth time i model a hand from scratch, and, failing again to get it right, i can say, it's one of the subjects i hate modeling most. i'll fix them the laziest way - in zbrush, of course.
damn, i should speed up with the modeling - there's still so much to do, not to mention shading and lighting. along with that, i plan finishing the sketch, just to organize all the brainstorming into one single piece and to plan colors roughly.

beelow
09-19-2005, 10:51 PM
just remember the anatomy of the hand, here is a website to go to. This is part of Bay Raitt's website he goes over edgelooping. The best way to model hands right is to look at other peoples wires. current progress of the conductor. i think i'll leave it for now as it is and move on with the rest of the scene, and get back to adding details later - a fresh look into this, main model of the scene, should be really helpful.

gardogg
09-23-2005, 10:21 PM
This looks really great. The only things that I might suggest fixing are: the fingers are super knobby and skinny as are the wrists - although this may be the "stylized" look you are going for. Also, the ear, even at that small resolution, looks like you didn't spend much time on it. It is lacking all of the folds and whatnot that an ear should have. Outside of that... very well done. I especially like the movement of the cloth!

uiron
09-23-2005, 10:35 PM
you are completely right, but i plan adding such details and fixes later, when everything will be filtered through zbrush - i'm so lazy to do such modeling as ear's details polygon by polygon. and, yes, skinny look is what i'm achieving conductor to look like (well, hands are an overdose now:]) - he's a wizard here, after all:]

rumours are that those who do not model a girl (naked preffered), will be excluded from final judging, as being incompetent of giving what jury (at least most of it) wants. maybe it's a rush update from modeling point of view, but i just wanted to warn all those who yet do not know.

having recovered after cruel deadline at work, i can again sit down to this project.

i've spend many evenings not having layed out a single polygon. thinking, rethinking, generating and burying ideas… still i've got no clear vision for environment. i dumped sword fighting scene, and another idea that involved a girl i posted before. i'll give her a harp later, she'll be a part of the orchestra:]

there will be no stage, either. experimented with dummies and found no nice solution to portray that. without written description, you won't be able to understand, what's happening, and i really want to avoid that.

for now, instead of sword fight scene, there will be a conductor itself. spectator will be able to recognize the same person down here conducing and up there, with a wizard's stick. we'll have a part of the orchestra playing, and, hopefully, a feeling of a big whoosh of a whirlwind, formed of cloth, figures and other clues for a spectator.

if i don't change my mind about renewed concept, i'll sit down to intensive modeling. time is ticking, and i'm still in the early stages. maybe it's because i want this picture to be far more special than i can do…

this will be generic face for orchestra players. i'll have a few of them, i think, both girls and guys. this one seems to be neither him or her - something in between:] i don't know how many times i've attempted to create semi-realistic face, but i still keep building topology from scratch - it's quite fun to try different aproaches to polygon flows (and to keep those nasty triangles away).
