Hey you guys nice to hear from you! I know I don't stand a chance of winning anything. I am to new to digital art to do everything I want to do with my art yet, but it just seemed to fun to pass up.
My take on this contest will be what could be the most spectacular thing that could happen for me and that would be "The Return of Our Loved Ones" so I'm thinking that I will paint a mother and her children coming back from the beyond. It could be a world wide event where the world is dying of polution and our loved ones are all returning to either save us or take us with them. Anyway that is the scope of my thoughts on this.
Right now I am working on a project for Exotique called "Neptune's Children" and I will be posting in the WIP forum soon.
Noob thanks for the luckage I need all I can get.
remcv8 - I hope that satisfies your curiousity for now.

I have changed my mind and decided to paint one of the last humans escaping from a doomed earth instead of my original concept of the return of the loved ones.

I'm posting my line art now, I had some of this done about a week ago but had some trouble posting silly me. I kept trying to post files that were to big. I knew this would be a learning experience but I didn't know some of the lessons would be so basic as paying attention and reading. Ha ha Oh well at least I am in and getting some work done now.

Thanks, I was pretty busy for a while and then I had some problems posting. Back in the groove again and having fun with this challenge. The ships in the sketch will probably change, this is only my third sci-fi painting so it takes me a while to figure out what will look right in the scene.

I like the tear bit. Makes you really wonder if she is back to save or to take away. Her hairline looks off though, looks like a misfitted wig at the moment.
Have fun and keep posting.:)

This looks very nice, just a couple of thoughts on her crying, a tear stained face would also look good, but if you want her to be just starting to cry, it'll well up in normally both eyes then spill out.

Wow, huge change from what you've posted so far. I like the color, the hair and I noticed that you took out the ship closest in reflection. I wonder how it's going look now, with what you have in mind.
Nice to see you again!!! Hope things with family are getting better.

Thanks remcv8 for all of your support and encouragement. I have made lots of changes on this lately. I ditched the large space ship because it was to distracting and to much like an airplane. I'm glad you like the color changes and the hair. I had quite a few layers with hair-dos and had fun picking my favorite.
The problems that kept me busy for awhile have improved some, and we are all happy about that. So I am hoping that the trend continues so I have more time to paint. I really want to finish this challenge.

If Anything, I would say that you should define a Light source for you image, I would go ahead an push the values for a more dramatic effect, and use you color theory to help with your color choices and to help with the mood you want to convey red-anger, passion, blue-creepy, cold, I think you get the idea. I am pretty sure that your are aware of this so use it to your advantage. Defining the light source first helps in the end. Look up some reference to help you get this piece solid, good luck!;)

11-20-2005, 01:26 AM
Beelow thank you for the suggestions, I will definately play with the values and colors and try to boost the drama in the painting. I really appreciate your input. I often have trouble with my color harmonies. Sometimes I try to defy the rules and create problems for myself.

Help! Does anyone know how to paint convincing explosions and meteors? What was I thinking when I chose this theme? Any suggestions would be gratefully welcomed.
This is a wonderful concept and I really like what you have done so far. The hair especially is fabulous. I like your choice of colours also and the contrasts. And I really like the light on the edge of her face.
Unfortunately I can't help you with explosions and meteors. They always look so impressive when you get them right, but I imagine they are really difficult to get right.
My main comment for this image so far is the tear on the girl's face. I think the shadow would not be so dark or make such a distinct line. It only needs softening a fraction.
Great work! I hope you finish in time. :)

11-24-2005, 07:33 PM
nice work. this is a difficult concept to pull off and it's looking good so far. Meteors that have entered the planets atmosphere are hard to do. To make them look like they're glowing you can try putting some white on the front where it's getting the most friction followed by a transition into yellow then orange like what you tried on the 11-22 submission, but a little more gradual. there probably be a trail of smoke as well. Also, only the metoers that are close to planet, in the atmosphere will be glowing. the ones in the upper right area shouldn't be glowing. a shadow on the planet would give a good sense of volume too. I think the explosion looking pretty good.

One of the last escapees from the planet earth gazes out the window of her spaceship. As she watches the destruction of her world and everything she loves by a shower of large meteors a tear slides down her cheek. She touches the window in a final gesture of goodbye.

Hi. Found you via your post on another thread. I really like your work -excellent. It would make a great sci-fi book cover or story illustration. In fact, to me, it has a feel of some classic sci-fi book covers and posters. It is also interesting to see your various tests of different ideas as the piece evolved.
Very nicely done.

Bupaji-Thanks for your lovely compliments. I am glad you came to take a look. Yes my posts on the progress really do show the struggles I went through to get the final piece, if you got anything out of it that's great.
Lemog- Thank you so much for your support and encouragement during the contest. Your stunning work has been an inspiration for me. Your praise for my work really means alot to me.
Makaron- I appreciate your kind words and am gratified by your response. It seems to have the effect for you that I was striving for. We do so love our friends and homes!
Ducklator- Thanks for the compliment. I think you are right about a few of the details. I would have loved to work on a little longer but I had to take an unexpected trip and that left me short on time. I had to submit it early because it would be too late when I returned from the trip. I hope that I have better luck next time.

Squibbit- thanks for your suggestion. It seems I was busy painting and missed it, but you were absolutely right about the meteor trails. I was lucky enough to go out in my yard and see one fall and then ran in the house and redid them. What a magikal moment that was.
Congratulations for finishing in time. The girl in particular is great. I love the detail in her.
That was very cool having the privilege of witnessing a meteor right at the time you were painting this pic.
