Hi Lombardo! Good to see you in. Have you checked the inspiration post ? (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/spectacular/inspiration.php)
It got clearer for me when I read it - I think almost anything might go for this challenge as long as it's trigging a lot of emotions.

Good luck with the defragging and finally someone is bringing some beer!

Ok,

let's try to explain my concept....

it'spurelyfiction... i'm using names of Countries just to place a background realistic.
I hope it'll never become like that.

-------------------------------------------------

"Oh my god... that day it's simply amazing, ..that day... perhaps i must say "the" day,...

It remember me the past time, the human's errors did in this Beautyfull planet....

It remember me the luck we had, ....

Let's try to explain when all has began...

In October 2008, after somes differents between a few of the World Power, the 3rd World War has officialy began with the massive attack of United States against China...

In 5 days The United States Take half of the CHina's territory with High Technologic weapons, using Ultra Sound and micro wave. When Japan refused to let the United States planted bases in his territory, the attak of United States against Japan was inevitable...

Using a system of low frequency they launch against Japan, a amazing Tsunami...

But the Japan resist well, and in 12 hours all the population was refugied in the G.Cans under Tokyo.
The China was not free, they ask help to the rest of the world, the Europe send troops to help them...but as nobody can imagine the Russian join the United States and attak the Europe.
A war of 4 years has began....

In July 2012, we seen a Alien intervention, they try to stop the war, or perhaps to extermine the human race,... still now, i can't say if they were bad or good....but they join with the China-Europe camp.
They said that an another Alien civilisation help the United States... and they couldn't let do that.
After that the camp was USA-Russian-"Little Gray" against China-Europe-Unknow.

In 10 hours....the world be damage as never... population died.... in the next 5h the "Little Gray" use their last weapon.... and destruct 98% of the population....the last 2% must has been save by the Unknow civilisation...

I was in this 2%... they put us in a large underground and unknow city... all was huge...but too small for all the people. All the vegetation was destruct... and the Ozone Layer too.

So we have to stay in the underground city. A lot of us died everyday, no enough food, no enough water.

The population feel the end... But one day.... "THIS DAY"....

It began by an incredible sound of explosion, a ray of light explose the ground of the central hall and smashed the roof! It was there that we stock the last cars we have. But in less than one minute, something strange, something that it can't be real happened...

A very HUGE tree grown from the ground whit an amazing speed, pushing the cars, and explose the stairs... it was simply amazing...unbelievable.... And the tree come out of the city, growing to the surface of the Earth....

In less than 1 hour, this amazing gift of the planet, save all of us...

Creating a new ozone layer, and vegetation, animals, rivers and mountains. It's was a dream....
In the next month, we could plant cereals, vegetals and fruits. And create again a new civilisation, trying to protect the planet...
I don't know how it's possible, i don't why or from where this tree cames. Some religious groups call it "Yggdrasil" or "Arbre de Vie"... link to it some Divinity or Gods... but i don't believe them... for me it's just the Earth... the Energy from the Earth.

Mmmh.. perhaps i'm too old for that... hehehe... but for ever, i'll keep this moment on my mind, this beatiful tree growning so fast, nothing can stop it..and save all of us.

I hope that the new generation will understand ours errors, and don't do it again....

The moment of my pictures, is when the tree grown pushing cars and explosing stairs, perhaps i will add if i get time a charater in foreground.
In Red the stairs on foreground, in white the tree with the two box in front, that is the cars. Rapid sketch.
Just to explain where i want to go.

i've start the modeling...ok it's supposed to be in a "huge" hall under the ground... opening only by the roof, cause of the tree... :D
I want to make long long stairs coming from a kind of exit on the roof to the ground...where after i'll put some "tuned" cars... cars that will be "push" by the tree...like some part of stairs... :arteest:

Hi all and thankz for replies!!! :bounce:

ok, i will try to explain what i want to do... 3rd world war.. 98% of the population is dead.. all the vegetation is destruct... live is impossible on the surface of the Earth, ....an unknow race of alien...put the survivors inside huge underground city (alien or old civilisation).
(one beer, before to go on....;) ..... )
In the Huge center hall (where the last and restored cars are stocked), from the ground a giant tree grown very fast and explose the roof, pushing on his way, cars, and explose circular stairs in the middle of the hall.....
Now, i'm modeling the wall of the hall, and the stairs.
I 'll post a "plan" for the explication.... i'm sorry for my ugly english and i hope you'll understand what i want to do... :arteest:

Ok update for the modeling, i've place the cars (simply box for now),
and change a little the camera view.

for now i've chose the "complex" decoration for now, just to test, but thanks yunisirees for your post...i'll note it, i always hesitate...
The light is not good for now, i thinks that in the final pictures, the light comes from the top... with good shadow in the front, and all light on the tree...must do some test, but after the modeling of the tree.

Thanks all for replies!!!

Ok, i think you're right... i'll choose the simple one for decorations..thanks for the help:thumbsup:
And Nemirc...wait a little the real cars are coming!! :arteest:

hehehe Lemog :) no problem!! Happy to see u  .... yeah your right for the common point ... but here is a huge hall, i'll try to give it a "old-civilisation-alien" style, i think it will be different that the way you take for yours...and for the tree true.... it's like that, i love nature, i love your previous entry and concept (and you know that i'm sure :)), and to say true, i would like to make a "update" of a old wip, the first i've posted on cgtalk... with a flower growing inside ruine (here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=167893&page=1&pp=15)), that i've never finished...... anyway i'm a fan of your work, you're like a model for me!! And it's normal that you influence me.... but i think the final way we'll take will be very different...and i tell you this time i'll finish!!! :bounce:
And thanks for the idea of whisky!

But for now i've got a problem, with the tree....
I'll post the screen, but i explain....i've decided to modelise tree with splines (surface technic on max), but i'm novice with this technic, and when i wanted to insert a new part on my tree, the exterior disappear.... i' don't know how to explain... screen can help... see below.

If anyone got an idea... plz feel free to post!!

So until i've find a solution, i've beginning cars, i'll post soon.

Thanks again all for replies!!

• "Surface technic"...mmm I am afraid I can't help, i don't know that technic, is it some kind of loft?, but check if the normals are pointing to the right direction, try converting the object to poly just to check it out, also try to "Cap" the hole.. I'll let you know if something more comes to my mind :banghead:

• By the way, good job so far, i am sure you are gonna find out what's the problem, nice modeling I like the double arcade, but if you lose detail depending of the camera shot then the simple one will work the best.

See ya!

nemirc
09-13-2005, 11:23 PM
My vote also goes for the normals thing.
Try rendering using a double-face shader :p

ihamid
09-14-2005, 12:33 AM
well i used max a long time ago but i still remember this.. u have to have quads and tris cant have more then that otherwise the surface dissappears! and i see u have more then four connected splines where two surf joins!

but sometimes the surface dissappears even if its quads or tris in this case adding a spline brings back the surface! hope this is helpful!

cheers!

SuperXCM
09-14-2005, 02:26 AM
Hi all!! Thanks for replies!!

Climax, Surface technic, is when you draw your model only with spline and apply the "surface" modifiers. I've checked the normals, but it seems that it was no face, it's empty and convert it to poly then cap, it's too hard because it's not the only part i want to add spline. :banghead:
And for the arcade i note your help, thanks a lot my friend! :)
So nemirc, doubleface shaders doesn't work too  -thanks for the vote :bounce:
And How is Vincent? Want to see update!!

yunisirees.... omg... THANKS!
you're right... it's the solution!! three/four connected splines ONLY!

Great modeling as usual here

I would have guessed on normals too - I haven't done much spline modeling... so thanks to Hamid - I've learned something useful now... great!

Good choice in going with the more simple ornaments.. it will show up more clear I think. The camera angle and the movement in the comp looks really good - we can already feel the force from that tree as it explodes.
I will definitely be back, and not only for the beers :)

The car appear strange but very orginal, it's you goal... just pictures little too small to comment more, but it seem very good...

The scene now... as for the car, pic is little and it's difficult for me to do some objective crit... but the first thing which disturb, it's the position of the car... for 2 reasons...
- we see only the roof, we can't discover your incredible car design,
- second point, this angle car give us a flat aspect at this foreground... and close the light...

For the moment, it's a little difficult to know if the car fall or was catched by the tree... but I think your next update will be certainly more explicite...

In any case... that comes very nice and interesting, I'm very happy you really want to finish this one  Go Simon...

Good... now, scenery appear better with new position of the car, sure ! witha appropriate lilghting... much better.

About your funny car, now that I see it better, just a little disturb me a little... the windshield seem very flat and with too much hard angle... just certainly a personal taste, and not something very objective I think... good continuation... keep your hand on :scream:

Hi all, here is an update some new elements, ground ..and an ugly photoshop color test.... "à l'arrache" like we say in french....
Just to try to find the way, first i would like to get light from the high but now, i think it will be more spectacular if the light come form ground, a "open" ground, destruct by the tree.
Any C&C are always welcome!

Lemog Gunilla, yes now i think it's better for the car, thanks for help!!

I've change the light in the last post, and looking now at the previous post (with the light form the top) i hesitate, i don't know wich is better, in one way, the tree is more view entierly (not sure if the good word  ), in the second way, the "spectator eyes" look more the ground, break by the tree, and open to some strange light... it's two different way...
I must make some test... :arteest:

Which beer does the trick? (hey I know you're talented, just kidding ok?) u must send a six pack so that I can get started with my spectacular entry :) Stella Artois for a start? Anyway, good luck :)

Hahaha thanks man! It's belgian beer, here we are near Jupille, so we drink a lot (too much? ) of Jupiler, but there is a few of different style of beer... like St-Feuillien or Kriek... hum...
Anyway, you're welcome to drink some of them if you come in Belgium!!
Or if you can't come, i send pack to you, no problem!

The idea to put the mains light source from the bottom is interesting, but it mask a bit the tree (bottom overlighted, top overdarked) wich is the main element of the scene. You need to add more contrast to your scene. ;)

Heeee just have antoher beer to find the right lighting setup! Ca marche pas que pour les idées cette technique :D

Et la pécheresse dans tout ca?

09-18-2005, 04:23 PM
Hi Simone, I checked your concept, and I have some advices.

The tree is in a extreme perspective, maybe could to make bigger the top area.

Your scene is very dark, and the tree lost in that.
Perhaps break the roof for the light entrance. Maybe rays from the top.

Good luck.

And one question. Why you put a car in the building? The car is good but is not logic.

nemirc
09-18-2005, 05:11 PM
Hello there :wavey: So that's the car. I like it. It has that retro look that makes it very cool.

Your scene is very dark, and the tree lost in that.

I have to agree. I find it very difficult to see the tree... to tell the truth, I can't even see the tree! :curious:

Borro
09-18-2005, 09:57 PM
Wow that car looks hoooot . The scene is coming up great. I love the hot colors :) and the cracks... But I think more steps should be visible, I mean not from the bottom, because the first time I saw the pic I asked myself what the swirling thing around the tree is... Well thats all from me. Keep it up.

Your Car now gets more attractive simon, But I have to say something , It's better to spend your time on main subject, If background gets detailed makes composition hard to undersatnd,
And main object will gone.

Hi all!

yunisirees, Goul, romelalgo, nemirc, Borro, bahman, madshooter, suk-grigorij thanks a lot for the support and replies! :bounce:

I've did lot of test, but nothing give what i wanted...trying with mental ray, brazil, changing light, position... i don't have something i like... :banghead:

romelalgo---> The car is cause it was in this huge hall that we store the old cars.

suk-grigorij---> not a lot of time, this idea was on my brain since a long time...

But, i don't post update as you see.... because i hesitate a lot in my concept... i've seen a amazing movie yersterday... Final Fantasy Advent Children, and waouwwww.... simply amazing.... this movie give me something strange, i want now to make someting in exterior, something i don't know if i can do... something i never try... and i think the challenge is a good place to try this. want to make a scene more lighter, in middle of the day.
I was thinking and looking at my thread, read again some post... thinking...:arteest: ... and then i read this :

Great concept - can become really spectacular.
So where is the background, will the tree grow up inside a building?
Somehow I pictured a great cityscape from your description.

OMG.... Gunilla, you're right!!

So i've decided to re-start my challenge, i'll create my scene more far in my story... i wanted to create this huge tree when he has reach the Earth surface and create a new environnement... this tree in the middle of a destrcut and old landscape. I'll post the concept sketch soon. I thinks i've enough time to restart, if i do it fast.

Not sure for now, just hesiting....

What do you think?

Ok here the new concept skecth, the tree in background, in the middle of a huge city devasted by war... this tree growning to the foreground, i think i will put my car in foreground, recovert by the tree... and a character sit on it.... lot of work, but i think it can be more spectacular, and it's something i can't do... so for me is a real challenge... the difficulty i think it's to feel that the tree are really huge... but 75 days, 6hours, 34 minutes and 11 seconds... it's a lot of time!!

C&C are welcome!!

Gunilla
09-20-2005, 06:39 PM
Well.... it seems like a pity to throw this great start away, I think. Perhaps you could try a combination. If you have the tree breaking the building in the background ( maybe just the left side) and the city could be seen through the hole - that way the car could have entered through the crack. I really like the stairs... it could perhaps be the entrance of a buliding instead of inside...?
It's certainly a turnaround in concept, but knowing you I think you could pull it off with that splendid style of yours :) Good luck, I will follow for sure.

EDIT: Oh, I see you posted your new concept while I was typing... I'll have to take a look

Hi Gunilla, thanks for reply,

I think i can use the object i did for last concept, perhaps transform the huge hall in a building break in the city, opened to the staris inside, and the car will be in the front i think, i must do some test... always hesiting... thanks for reply and support my friend.

09-20-2005, 07:21 PM
Hi :). Well the new concept and idea is great too... even better... Now when you twist the camera a bit and put the car near it it'll look super cool :). I think the city is going to be the hard part, so one suggestion - make about 10-15 building and spread them around, but what makes citys are the special buildings like museums etc... so 10-15 standard and 10 not standard should be more than enough :). Anyway keep it up!

Well... I think it's your choice... and I understand a little your "special" feeling after seeing this movie... I don't know it but I just go to see the Website of it, and effectively, pictures are very beautiful and so, very inspirating...

Your new subject will be certainly more clear to depict... but maybe you can do something as Gunilla explain... a big aperture on your concept... and around, some pieces of the dark buildings... but only 5 to 10% of the picture... a contrats of the past, buildings...they are grey... with this growin'tree... in colored hopin'country... maybe a good solution to keep a feet in your previous idea... and to take a new way nevertheless.

In any case... If you change totally... the new concept is very interesting too, certainly more... with this opening on the best and the beauty

Hi all thankz for replies and support!! Sorry for the late answer...

Borro--->Thanks for support my friend... you're right for the camera view, look at my last update, i thinks it can be cool, for sure i will adjust but it can help to understand what i want to do...
Thanks too for your suggestion, it help me a lot, and i'have already a good way to follow, help i understand how i can realise my pictures. Thanks man! :arteest:

nemirc---> Hi! yes i know Kaena, but i think it will be more like FF7 advent children (not so perfect...), i want something desaturate, gray, something with more city, mechanical view... perhaps put some ship or why not the robots i've modelisate, huge and crash in the city:rolleyes: ... Thanks for support my friend!! Good luck too! :bounce:

Lemog--->Hi Laurent, thanks for support, FF7 AC is for me the best thinks i've seen in 3D movie, perhaps because i'm a old fan of the FF's games... and i have been a little disappointed when i see the first one ( "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" ), this one is better, not so realist with the characters..."si tu as l'occasion n'hésite pas à le regarder, je trouve que ça a le mérite d'être vu ne serait-ce que pour la façon de filmer, les ambiances, les scenes d'actions, la façon dont ils ont réussit a rendre quelque chose d'immense... enfin bref j'ai adoré.... "

And as you can see in my last update, i go on with this new concept sketch, doing like Gunilla saied, it's a good idea, but i really want to prove myself, i want to make something i can't make, to learn a maximun, and if i can't finish it for the challenge, i'll post it in this forum when it's done!

yunisirees--->Thanks for supports! I hope to post soon more update!!

madshooter--->I go on with this concept! I've already place the previous modeling in the scene, but not sure if it'll stay there. I hope i'll get enough time! Thanks for reply my friend! :bounce:

JamesMK--->Thanks for support my friend! Yes it will be hard to give the feeling that it's huge... lot of work...:banghead:

Divaise--->Thanks! I think you must wait a long time... ... but i will finish it!!

Goul---> Thanks man!! Yes, more difficult, but it can be more spectacular!

So i let my computer rendering, and i don't disturb it. I'm rendering the forground for now, when it's finished, i'll post the mix do in 'toshop. :arteest:
I've start character too, but don't like it. It's very hard to modelisate....

I've received the Book from Ballistic/ "D'artiste Matte Painting"... it's incredible, and open for me a new possibility, to make this city. I think i will use some photo i've take in Sicily, for the sky and for the city. I must do some test. I think it can work, and i will learn a lot. :bounce:
Thankz for support my friends!!

Hi, ok here's an update, tree modeling finished for the top i think perhaps adjust leaf at some part, but the base is there. Now must work on the bottom, and make growing the "racine", but i need to make the ground before, to see where i must go.
Some adjust on 'toshop, don't know really where i'm going...just test, changing everytime my mind... lot of work. i'll post a details view of the tree in next post.

Will you stay low on saturation for this? It looks well in the comp.

Hi sim !

You crazy belgian one ! you had a neat starting concept but decided to change because of another vision of yours, well, i know you love the word challenge, so, all your wishes are fullfilled now !

About your "attack of the giant bonzai", looks promising so far, but oh man, this is a spectacular amount of work to do... immense task !! but i know you're not afraid of anything ;)

Imho, you'll need a lot of details to make all this epic, more buildings and so on, maybe some idea to "lighten" the task and your cpu's health would be to add a sea around your city ? A "dirty" trick to ease your task maybe. I've got a picture in my head, where neither the city background nor the woman would be needed, so you could concentrate on the "smaller" city and tree. I see the city to the left and the sea to the right from a "cloud" "3/4" point of view with one root coming straight at your point of view.

Well, just ideas... enough said, i still must think about my concept...

Thanx for having "convinced" me to participate too and keep up the good work !!

Hi all, ok here is a new render, begin of the ground, no building for now, just the ground, test of texture. I start also the background with some photos i've take in Sicily, just a start. I think i must change my light position in the 3D scene....
It's a mix with toshop. Missing a plan between the second one with the 2 building, and the one with the tree...
Trying to ajust the color, looking for a good mood..

Thankz for replies, it help me to stay motived!! :arteest:

nemirc---> You're welcome in this new city, all is good, all his natural, and we have some good beer!

tuck---> Your entry is incredible, amazing texture, and style! Thanks for post!! I hope it will be!

3rd user---> Thankz!!:)

Lemog---> Yes i must detailled the roots, i want to try zbrush for the details... to learn something else, i start to play with displace map and it's really cool, it give me some new possibilities. Thanks for support! :)

Gunilla---> I've used a soft called Tree Broadleaf studio to make 3 littles groups of leaves differents, it's really easy, and lot of parameters can be adjust, can also import different leaf, it can export in 3DS format, so it's easy to distort and change some part in max. So i've duplicate, distort and place these groups to make all the leafs. I must adjust again some part. And yes, i want to stay in this low saturation... but perhaps let see some more colored part. Perhaps for the character. Thanks my friend!

romainf---> Omg! Hi Rom, i've see you enter the challenge too, but nothing new, i'll be watching, post your sketch, give us something "Spectacular"!! :wip: Thanks for post man, you know i'm crazy, and i want to learn a lot in this challenge, trying some new stuff... :arteest: ... and thanks for your idea, it can be cool, i must do some test.

nebezial, thankz for post, yes i'm a really great fan of the Final Fantasy from the beginning and it's was after look the movie FFAC that i've change my concept. It's make me happy that you already find this influence in my pictures! :arteest:

Goul--->Thankz! No it's not hrdi, i don't know this method, it's a kind of texture, isn't it? Hi all,
The adjustement of the second plan is ok, i must do render. So i begin to modelise character, i must go more fast.
Here's a start shoot, really hard. Not sure if it's the good way. And i'm really a novice in characters modeling, i never finish an human... it's a really good challenge, but i have a question, i don't know if i must modelisate the cloths in the same mesh, or adding by reactor, i never use cloth dynamic, it's hard? Which is the better way? Any crits and comment are welcome.

So the last update, some stuff add, the background is always the same for now, not time to do render yet. Not all the texture, or some duplicate whitout coordinates for foreground.

The time is running, i must do now :

-The hair, texture and some stuff for the girl.
-The other character (yes another one, i'll change a little the concept, pushing it more far, i'll post soon the new concept.)
-Adjust the ground and the car texture.
-Add some part of the tree in foreground, also around the car.
-Do all plan render.
-Composite all on 'thoshop.

Hope idon't forget something.

Hi! Here's an new update, ok i've made the hair for the gril and add a second character, he's a B.Boy, making a "pose" of breakdancing on a part of the tree, survivants doing some "extreme dance". Some part add and adjust on the other plans i've made render and try to get a mood, and an "ambiance" but it's hard, not really sure about this second character, perhaps put him more far, or near the camera. About the second character, I'm sure too... before read your text... I don't understant that's a guy... and again less a breakdancer... Maybe this guy is not very useful in your scene... in your story ? in image, we can't heard the music...

For the rest... it's okay for me, I love the mood, and the global composition... it's really spectacular... maybe you can again play with lighting... to have something a bit less flat... just in compositing of course...

the way is good my friend... just continue and give us the Final Masterpiece... :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

They all look great... difficult, it's now only a matter of taste. If I have to choose it would be the 3rd or the 1st, but I can't say why :)

This is all coming together really well - congrats, you're almost there :bounce:

I like the 4th, it`s has a warm atmosphere.

Everything depends of what emotions you want give... the #3 have a dark sad sky. #1 and #2 are more unprecised.

Just my 2cents :D hope it helps.

I fact i prefer all the version on the right, the other ones are a bit too much saturated..
My favorite is the bottom-right one, warm and cool, but i also like the top-right one, wich looks more cold.. Depend of the final feelings than you wanna put in your image... ;)

I missed this one. Looks great. I like the one on the bottom left. I like the warm background and how it's less saturated in the foreground, except for the jacket. Really nice image. Great mood and I want to know the story when I look at it. Draws the viewer in.

Hi, thankz for replies! :bounce:

Ok i note the votes! Thanks for that, it's nearly from what i was thinking, and i really understood that it depend of what feeling i want to show. :arteest:

And for me it's a landscape desaturate and cold, but where a "giant Bonzai:D " grow to save us, pushing some irradiation of warm and energy to the all planet... so.. i've try this night differents version, centring the "warm" on the tree, and the desaturation and cold far of the tree but near the character. I must adjust some last thing ( i've got a too much dark zone on the cylindrical tower in second plan).
I post the final soon. :wip:

Thankz again all for support and comment, stay tuned for the final one!

THE STORY :

It's was a dream....all this warm energy growning...

All the youngs survivants now when they look at this huge three, i hope they understand ours errors, and don't do it again...."
