Hi everybody!

This is my first CGTalk Challenge entry. I already have thought up a concept, but i am not sure yet how to visualize it in an interesting way.

The concept is the next human breakthrough in technology. In the near future humanity finally grasps how dimensions work and have narrowed the number of possible dimensions down to 3. The plan is to gain access to these dimensions by having some form of implosion under zero gravity, creating a rift between dimensions. The idea behind this concept is that they will find 2 other dimensions when creating this rift. Heaven and hell, which will mark the beginning of the end of time of our universe as we know it.

The idea for me is that i capture this moment of the rift opening, sort of like the first moonlanding. But with people watching it happening on something like times square. It is a split second shot where one group is looking at one part of the rift, totally amazed by heaven, and the other is in terror by the image of hell.

So, that is the concept, now all i need is to find some way to put it all in one image.

I have not really thought up a composition yet. So i have just started small, with a concept for one of hells citizens. I had a lot of fun doing this concept. I am still putting some more thought into the big composition. So i might first make some more of these small sketches to figure out certain elements in the scene.

Well, i also have a sketch, but it is very chaotic. So, i think this concept should be a bit easier to figure out even if it is 3d.

Thanks for the comments guys. I had two compositions that could work, but i settled for this one for now. Because of the complexity of the scene i will probably work on 3 different scenes and composite them together. I was thinking of doing it like this:

- Background matte
- Bottom layer
- Top layer
- Vehicles & Creatures

But i am not 100% sure yet. For now i will be working on the concept of the angels. I want them to have a very high-tech look to them. The whole angel with a sword thing is kind of medieval. And i was thinking, why would angels be using outdated swords, when you can use an advanced particle weapon.

Comments on the composition would be very much appreciated. I am really trying to take the composition to the max. There are some things i would like to improve. For example, it would be better to see a bit more downwards into the hole where the forces of hell are climbing up. But oh well, i guess you can't put everything into one composition.

ShkYo: Thanks man, yeah, i want a lot of that. In fact i am still doing some research on it. I will have a couple of different layers above the city. Because of the crack in the ground there will be this red light coming from hell upwards. The city is also ablaze in some places, so i will have some smoke development. There should also be some smog. The idea is to make the bottom part of the image look like hell has conquered it. From the top i want the angels to come down, with lightbeams coming from heaven. And that will probably need some cloud layers. I am just glad that this is a still image and not an animation :D.

Gunilla: Thank you ;).

Yonkiat: Thanks you for the kind words. I like your elephant concepts a lot too.

Zongo: Ahh, cool man, good luck with the contest!

fgcity: Thanks, i actually have to be carefull with the details, because it could be a big problem later on :).

dodo3d: Haha, i don't know if it is one of the best concepts. I hope so, i would love to get one of those cool prices :D.

Continuumx: Thanks!

Red_Plague: Thanks a lot :).

NutsyUK: Hehe, guess we both have to do a hell of a lot of work to get close to the finals, good luck ;)!

Gardogg: Thank you, i always have wanted to do an armageddon like setting. It has always interested me how such a battle would look, and what the role of the humans would be in the entire .... thing. Well, i am planning to do a couple of things. For one, i don't really want the angels to protect the humans, and the demons to attack them. I am more or less planning to have the demons more or less ignore the people who have lived their lives the right way, and have them grab and drag people down who are wicked. I am also planning to have some people run up to the angels for protection, but the angels show them no mercy because they have lived bad lives and toss them aside. So i am not really going for the new testament, God forgives everyone thing. But more for the God from the old testament, who is not as kind to humans..i guess. It does come to confrontations between angel and demon on some positions in the image. It is still a war between good and evil, so when they stand eye to eye, they will fight eachother. The idea would be that one angel can take about five demons. But the demons outnumber them, because, well, i guess hell has been more productive, quantity, not quality :D.

beelow: Thank you.

Some more information on what i am up to at the moment. I have refined the concept a bit about what i want to have going on in the foreground. I am thinking of placing a cameracrew on top of a newsvan with all these demons around them. One of them will be grabbed by the foot by a demon. So he is grabbing someone else, because the idea of being dragged down to hell isn't really tempting to him. So you get a bit of a struggle around the newsvan. Sort of like a small riot ;).

I have also started to do as many things that i like to do the least as i can. So i have started building a load of low poly buildings and low res textures. These things bore me to death, so i would rather do it now, now i am most motivated, than in a couple of weeks ( when i hope to be even more motivated, but you never know, if i am less motivated i need something fun to work on :D ).

This is a very awesome approach to the workflow! I was considering how I would do mine and I think I'm gonna use this methodology for mine as well. It makes a lot of sense. However, I do want to make at least one cool thing at the start of my entry to set the tone for the scene and give me an idea of what quality level I will be going for. I want to create one thing at least that will be my inspiration and foundation for the rest. Maybe you should do this as well. Make like one main character or something with your best effort and THEN continue by doing all the boring stuff and THEN you can start with the rest of the fun stuff.

I love your idea alot and I'm excited to see it progress.

Strik3r: Thank you, i am still working hard ;).

gardogg: For me my inspiration are mostly the concept sketches i got. And i already have the entire scene mapped out in my mind. If it translates well to one image is another story offcourse. It would be smart to create something cool first from another perspective, more people will view your thread if you have something cool going on. And when a lot of people are interested, that is a very good motivator.

dern: Haha, yeah, i like them too :). This one will be huge. I have placed some humans in the scene to check their scale on different level of the image. It actually resulted in me having to change perspective slightly so they would be bigger in the foreground. But oh man, on the level beneath this building, the humans are nothing more than dots. Which means i will have to do a serious ammount of modelling.

Offcourse, these panels are not the only thing i have done. I just don't feel like swamping this thread with renders of simple models i have done. I just have to model a load of low to medium poly stuff, that most people in general don't find all that interesting. Most want to see lots and lots of detail, i will have that, but i will model that foreground stuff in a later stage ( i hope to have all the low - medium stuff done when we have 50 days left ).

Anyway, list of what i have been working on:

Bricks for floor
Fencing
Bridge in the background
Floor level earthquake style
Newsvan
Lantarns

Some more things about the concept. I want to combine some typical dutch architecture with science fiction things, and try to combine it all to a balanced setting. I think it will be more interesting than just a sci-fi metal setting on its own. But i will show more on that later. Maybe tommorow ;).

Lol, yeah, i was just thinking that it is hard for anyone else than me to get the big picture. But the scene is so big i don't have any way to clearify things at the moment. I hope that in a couple of weeks or so i have enough stuff to put together most of the scenery. These panels are commercial panels and they are placed on the streets. I am actually rendering a piece of street right now as a test and i will upload it in a second. So you can see what i mean by trying to mix a bit of the old dutch building style with new, techy stuff.

Well, you see a a lot of this in holland. I am planning to combine it with some futuristic stuff. Actually, if you look back in the concept, you have this hole in the foreground. This is where this street will be and it will have collapsed downwards. So i have modelled seperate bricks because they will partly be sliding of the side.

I thought. Lets just show all those small things i have done. This is a small dutch style fence. It will be used in the foreground.

This is a very early model of the qround section. This is also the final camera position. To give a sense of scale. That low poly building in the foreground has 4 floors. So yeah, that will be quite a large city down there. Don't think this is anything close to the final quality. It is far to low poly.

Well, last one for tonight. This is an update of the bridgesection. It is still a bit to uniform. But that will change later on, when i will demolish some parts of it. You can see the lighting panels in there by the way.

Well, why the changes. The biggest reason is that i wanted more levels, and i wanted more windows and open structures. This way i can layer some stuff on top of eachother, enhancing the feel of depth. I don't know how much more detail i will put in. I will probably detail the sections more to the foreground. But leave the rest at this level.

Very, very promissing idea. The same thing I can say about sketches.

Not quite sure if all this stuff about 2 extra dimensions is nesessery. You see, if you claim something in the story you should express it graphically. So how are you gonna do it. You can use only 3 dimensions. Well 4 if we include time as 4th. I gues it wold be right to remove "dimensional" idea from the story and replace it with some other pseudoscientific stuff. Well you could say some something about neitrino subparticles or tahion engines. Or maybe you cold say something like "wierd experiments" or "damn scientists". Hope you cought my idea. It's better to remove detailed explanations from the story.

Good luck. Can't wait to see your updates. Sorry for my english.

Good luck. Can't wait to see your updates. Sorry for my english. Yeah, you make a good point. I don't know if you have seen Constantine, but in constantine the main character makes a switch from the earth plane to the hell plane. Everything is sort of the same on the hell plane. So it is sort of a mirror image of earth. The big difference is that everything is corrupted and destroyed in hell. So what i will try to do in this image is sort of create rifts in the image where you can look into hell or heaven. Everything in these dimensions is sort of in the same position, only in hell it is destroyed/evil, and in heaven everything is more beautifull. The ground level of the image is reserved for hell. The top/sky level will be heaven, and stuck in between there is our own little earth plane. The opening of the rifts will be visualized by beams shooting out of the tower you can see in the setup. That is actually the device that is responsible for the dimensions collapsing into eachother.

But yeah, it is certainly no easy task, my biggest worry is that is must look convincing and that want the eye to move through the composition in a natural way. In the foreground i will focus on some human elements and specific persons. Like the fear people feel for hell, or regret that people made mistakes in their life. In the background you will get a sense of scale, it becomes less personal, and it will more or less give background information on what caused the disaster.

Uhm, well the foreground is slowly coming together. Still lots and lots of work to do. But at least you get a bit of a feel what will be going on i hope. The scene is still very clean. But don't worry that will change.

DogmaD
09-21-2005, 09:57 AM
Yep, there is actually a road on top of this building. Those crazy dutch architects!

Thank you for the nice words, suk-grigorij. Yeah, it will be a lot of work still. I have to model about 5 high detail characters. A demon, an angel and 3 humans for the foreground scene, this is the worst part for me, because i suck at rigging. But i will try to do an ok job. Then i will probably do some low poly humans, just to throw of buildings. You have to be a bit sadistic i guess to give a good representation of hell :).

The city below will also be quite some work. But i still have 75 days. So if i just keep working on it, i am hoping that in the end i will have a nice image. If i don't make it within the challenge limits, then i will just continue working on it afterwards. But i think i can make it.

Some initial modeling on the devils chest, still pretty low detail work. I am working my way outwards from the chest. And i am also working a bit on the back. When both sides are done i will merge them together and start balancing the topology and perfect the muscles.

I will first start with modeling a pretty muscular male body, then i will start distorting it to have the same proportions as my demon concept.

Hello DogmaD, I just wanted to chime in on your entry so far. Like just about everybody else, I'm impressed with what you have so far. You sure did take a big bite! I hope you have time to chew it all before the deadline! I know the feeling because I'm working on my entry and I've got a lot to do and a lot to learn. but the scale of your concept is going to be a reall challenge. I wish you the best of luck and can't wait to see how you handle the Angels and Devils.
