I wondered if CGChannel would launch another forum after CGTalk split away. Looks like it.

CGTalk is a CGNetworks website. We run the 3D Festival website, CGTalk and CG Challenge.

We have nothing to do with CG Channel - but there is a misconception because all the staff from CGNetworks are ex-CG Channel and we're responsible for most of the original content that was published on CGC between August 2001 - July 2002 (notice how our names were removed from those articles in his 'archive').

This "history" is misleading and we're extremely disappointed in CG Channel's inability to present the facts in an honest manner.

The core editorial team (five of us) left CG Channel in July after disagreements with Mr Henault over backpay. We retained CGTalk.com as collateral and have continued to run and improve this community as our passion and hobby.

CG Channel's claim to having made the success of CGTalk is also absurd. When we split the two websites in July, CGTalk's membership was 4,000. In the four months after the split, through the work of the moderators in community building, this community has expanded to over 18,000.

Tito "Lildragon" Belgrave, Ali "Sheep Factory" Tezel and myself have not derived any personal income from CGTalk sponsorship at all as the funds have been allocated to hosting the website (which transfers 800GB of data a month). We will continue running this website as long as the community and industry finds it useful and rewarding -- irregardless of the slander thrown against us.

Best regards,

Leo

This "history" is misleading and we're extremely disappointed in CG Channel's inability to present the facts in an honest manner.

CGChannel seems to have had problems with the news getting an editorial rewrite a lot. The best was the luxology/Newtek flames being fanned by the webmaster.

Between that, their up to four month+ old "news flashes" and registering to read their "news", it seems shocking they get sponsors.

The comments made by Jean-Eric Henault in the article reminded me of some of the more nasty negative campaign ads that were aired this past election season.

His comments certainly do not do him any credit and really have no logical reason for being posted on the CGChannel site.

P.S. What's this with refering to himself in the 3rd person, as if there was an outside interviewer writing the aticle, instead of doing it himself ?

halo: thumbs down, because they are luring people into the article to supposedly talk about cgchannel's history and what it truly is, is way to discredit and flame cgtalk's team.

Ever since they started doing dirty tricks [specially the one where they posted an article about "CG web hosting" at a certain price, and once you clicked it was just an ad for a regular web hosting company charging much more than what the article's header said.] I've lost confidence in cg channel's content. Last week they posted some "news" about Steamboat software, which really was just an ad that linked to the company's web page.

slaughters: That 3rd person tactic really was low. :annoyed:

Wow !

Some of the CGChannel articles really are mis-leading. I just popped over there and was intrigued by this article lead in on the front page:

Hollywood Dreams
Digital artists from all over the world dream of working for the top studios in Hollywood. We try to shed some light on the myths and the sometimes brutal reality of the real CG world.

more >>>> (http://www.cgchannel.com/news/showfeature.jsp?newsid=480)

When I clicked on the link I was disapointed. The article did not, "... shed some light on the myths and the sometimes brutal reality of the real CG world". It was nothing more than an e-mail solicitation for content. You were asked to email Jean-Eric Hénault stories about, "...people who have achieved their dreams and those who are still working hard to get there".

E-mail requests for stories is not a bad thing in itself. What was wrong was that you were sent there under the false pretense that there all ready existed such an article, not that Jean-Eric needed help in writing one.

I just think it's a shame Jean-Eric has decided to air what happened so publicly after the way Leonard, Tito et ali kept such a dignified silence, especially when it would have been easy for them to bad-mouth CGChannel if they'd felt like it.

So saying, maybe we should respect the way they've handled it and keep the partisan anti-CGChannel loyalty down to a minimum, huh?

Ian,

I agree. I know nothing about what happened in the past between the two parties. Commenting about it by me would just be silly.

I just was commenting on what I saw on CGChannel today as I had not visited the site in a while and was truly surprised by the changes.

Check the Shania Twain article on CgChannel and compare that with the one on 3dFestival. Did Blur send out a pre-written article or is there some copy/pasting going on? ;)

yes and you will also notice the carefull wording of it to make JE sound like it was all his doing.

Leo, Tito and Gang have done a much better job me thinks, with not only cgtalk but 3D festival.

Keep Up the excellent work guy. Karma will get JE, its only a matter of time.

ditto dark_lotus.
I just wish there was enough money on the Internet to enable the people that run CG talk to make money and still keep the site free...
it sure is great charity! Thanks guys!

I do miss the old days of the good CgChannel. -- They just had a lot more news about what was going on in the industry. Maybe it was the layout that allowed for more stories... but it was something I checked everyday. -- I rarely check 3d Festival cause it just doesn't seem to have the same vibe. -- I certainly don't check CgChannel much though either anymore.

i also miss the old days with cgchannel somehow, and i dont think cgtalk have been this big today if it wasnt for cgchannel!
[with all the respect of cgtalk today]
when i discoverd cgchannel there was no Forum!
(maybe it was down at that time, and was about to be reopened, cant remember exactly)
and it took some time after the announsment of a cgchannel forum to the actuall opening/reopening of one...
there was already some sort of a hype over the opening, and i think that helped alot! to what it is today!

anyway, we dont know anything of this conflict, and i hope none of the sides should loose creds and dignity because people are judgeing without knowing!

keep up the good job!

This thread should be laid to rest.

The facts speak for themselves. Five people leave CGchannel and the website goes downhill after they leave. THen 3D Festival springs up with the same people who leave, and are pumping with the best VFX content anyone has seen.

None of the people in the office here in Disney go to CGChannel anymore because its just a collection of useless links and fluff - most of the news that goes up on CG Channel is notably scavanged from CGTalk's news forum anyway.

I think since I know a bit more about Mr henault i'm very disappointed by this guy. The people who did that great job at cgchannel are doing it now here and at the others cgnetworks pages. Even before I knew the facts i realized how the quality of cgchannel wen't down. No wonder I can say. all the great people left selfish mr. henault
