View Full Version : Spectacular 3D Entry: Gary Downing
gardogg 12-03-2005, 04:43 PM I just noticed even in this latest post a big flaw: the reeds in the background end abruptly. Little things like that are going to need to be fixed for sure.

I just thought I would post this to share a nice way of fine tuning that I'm using. When one renders the different objects and puts them in their own layers in photoshop, it is helpful to create a solid colored layer that can be used to see if there is any black outline left around the perimeter of the objects. I have found that even using the alpha channel of the .tga images that I rendered to select the black space and delete it, some black is still left bordering the objects when you zoom way in. This black border ruins the seemless integration of the object with its background.

Photoshop froze and I just lost 45 minutes of work. That's TWICE! :banghead:

Shakes - I feel like that guy! I think I'm gonna go find a cup and sit out on the street corner now ;) Nice looking cartoon. My mom wants her and I to make greeting cards. We both have a sense of humor and can draw decent. It would be fun.

I haven't done any updates of the whole thing yet because it's so close to being done that I want THE update to be a surprise. It looks so much better than my last update. Okay, back to work.:D
I also wanted to say that I counted and found that I have 31 layers in my photoshop file. No wonder it keeps crashing! I'm abusing it.

I couldn't resist uploading an update. I'm getting close to being done now, but still have a lot of ideas for improvements. I would appreciate critiques! Let me know what needs to be fixed soon so I can get this looking as good as I can before final submission. Thanks.

One thing that is throwing me off is the lighting on the back of those models floating in the air, was that done intentionally? Preferably I would like to see the lighting more accurate to the light source from those clouds from behind them! Good luck on your entry!
gardogg
12-04-2005, 03:31 PM
Beelow - that light is supposed to be light sent from God directed towards his son Jesus and it is supposed to represent where Jesus is getting the power to perform the exorcism. The light beam needs to be extended down until it hits Jesus. Right now it stops at the top of the hills. I will extend it in my next update. That said, does the light beam make sense to you now?
3dzombie
12-04-2005, 03:54 PM
Amazing work Gary! Just waiting to see the light directed at Jesus. But hey! what happened to the glow in the demons? They looks soft now. More like reddish ghosts. Not fiery demons. It'd be great if they get their glow back... That's what I think...
Best luck buddy boy!

Hi Gary-two things..have you thought about bringing out more of the red on the demons, and lightening them a touch-they're a little dark and are blending in with the background a bit I think. also- where the demons first break from the body- I think there's too much empty space there- you can see too much of the pigs.
other than that, it's looking tops!
gardogg
12-04-2005, 08:06 PM
Well, that's two votes for redder demons. I guess redder demons it shall be. I toned down their saturation because I thought the strong red in the left side of the composition wasn't being balanced enough by any other colors in the right side of the composition. Oh well, thanks for the tips guys. I'll make them red like they were. I did like how that looked.

I added back in the saturation on the demons and I agree that they are more interesting that way. I also gave them motion blur which conveys their "scariness" more, conveys more motion, and hides the imperfections in the models. I decided that the pigs couldn't stampede through a sandy, rough terrain without giving off a smoke cloud, so I added that, as well as a slight ground fog which adds more mood and hides the imperfect terrain some. I would appreciate any last minute critiques. Thanks.

12-05-2005, 08:03 AM
Wow Gary! It's cool now, but it might be okay if u reduce the motion blur a weeny bit. Anyways I'm not sure about this. It looks cool all the same. Demonic! Yes. And have you fixed that beam from sky??? Coz I don't see a dif bet. the previous post and this as to the beam of light from sky. I thought it'd be pretty obvious the moment u look at the pic. Jesus is still in shadows of demons :( Just looking forward to that update...
Great job, bud!
Cheers!

12-05-2005, 08:11 AM
that's heaps better Gary-but I agree with the zombie- the motion blur is probably a bit too severe. nearly there!
gardogg
12-05-2005, 02:10 PM
Shakes and 3dzombie - Thanks a lot for the support guys! The "motion blur" isn't really a motion blur in a realistic sense. I intended it to be more of a disturbing effect for the viewer because up until now I didn't feel that the demons looked disturbing enough. If you all are confident that it should be toned down, I supposed I'll tone it down a little. Thanks.
3dzombie - The light beam is supposed to be subtle, but visible enough that one can see it clearly. Between the last update and now I extended the beam all the way down to Jesus and even lit the ground surrounding his shadow. I really don't know what you had pictured for it. I'm sure there is a better way I could approach the beam. Let me know if you have a suggestion for how I can improve it.

12-05-2005, 02:21 PM
Hey Gary,
I think the blur or effect on the demons is a little to much too. Looking forward to the final :)

12-05-2005, 03:20 PM
Hi Gary!
Actually the beam of light looks more like a fog. What I meant was a strong beam like say, a number of spotlights. like sunrays....
gardogg
12-05-2005, 06:14 PM
mmoir - thanks. I will have the blur toned down in my next update.
3dzombie - I understand what you are saying now. I'm going to look up some references and see if I get some inspiration to make a change on the beam. I'm not sure that I want it to be such a focal point but maybe making it more obvious to the viewer would be best. Thanks for the continued help!

3dzombie, I added the more dramatized lighting effect and I really like it. Thanks for the great suggestions! My next step will be to add more mood and color in a subtle way using some of the photoshop tips that Lemog was so kind to share ;)
Please all, continue to give me suggestions. I appreciate them alot.

Gary,
To me the one on the left fits more to the scene , somehow I picture green light as more erie, like in a horror movie . Not much time left .....

mmoir - I agree. Good point about that light. Here's an update where I put the color changes UNDER the light layer so that only the terrain and sky will get the hint of saturated color.

The Story:
The scene took place on the shore of Galilee. Jesus exited his boat and was met by a demon-possessed man who fell down on his knees at Jesus' feet and asked Jesus what he wants with him and begged Jesus not to torture him - for Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Jesus asked him what his name was and the man said that his name was Legion, for many demons had entered him. The demons then begged Jesus not to send them into the abyss but rather to let them enter into a nearby feeding herd of pigs (2,000 pigs). So Jesus agreed to this and cast them out of the man. The demons entered into the herd of pigs and the pigs all ran down the steep hillside and drowned themselves in the sea of Galilee.

Now the resolution for the .tiff submission should be as large as possible. But for the final image, I had no clue how large it could be... Do I submit a large res version as a link from my own website? Because if I'm not mistaken, there are restrictions on the size of uploads. Is that restriction deactivated for uploading the final image for one's thread?

Gary ,
Good job on finishing the challenge, the image looks very good . I like the illumination and the color of the sky . You did a great job on this and good luck.
Regarding the upload time for my tiff file . I had to use a dialup connection and my file size was 22mb , in the previous challenges I don't remember my file size being this big. I had all my layers flattened to just the background , my image size is a little bigger then what they suggested . It would be interesting to know the size of tiff files that other people uploaded

Thanks Rebeccak.
Mmoir - my image was 20.2 mb I think. It's good to know that we had roughly the same size image. For a second there I got nervous. The dialup connection may have killed you too. I have cable internet and it works very well for me. Lightning speed connection. I click on a page and bam, its there. No wait. I sound like I'm advertising don't I? hehehe.

Climax - thanks. Your entry really rocked so it's a big complement to have you in my thread.
dimi16 - thank you. You were a big encouragement for me through the final stages. I agree that it looks leaps and bounds better than when I first started. I really want to get great at this stuff so bad and it's difficult to find out the truth: that no matter how hard one tries, it takes TIME to master something. So I've got to take a deep breath and continue to grow. I think you are going to grow too. You need to just keep at it and so will I. The sky is the limit ;)

the1stangel - Thanks for all of your support. I feel so weird now that this is over. I actually have choices on what I can do with my time. I don't know what to do with myself! But I agree that I should rest and recuperate so that I can get back my "force," as Lemog puts it.

Lemog - a lot of work is right. I learned so much. Thanks for being here to help me along the way. I did my best to implement the photoshop tricks that you taught me. I appreciate them!
Zongo - Thanks. I'm impressed that you finished in time. Finishing in time is really a challenge.
