As you see the barrel of my gun has really wierd shading. I set my normals to face and then averaged them down the barrel but not on the rest of the gun. Why does it look like this and how can I fix it?

Thanks

You could do set to face first and then soften/harden instead on the faces you want to soften - that'll give you control over the angle at which an edge goes from hard to soft - you can even change the value interactively in the channel box or attribute editor by selecting the polySoftEdge node.

Note that you can also use soften/harden on individual edges to get full control.

yeah that should do it. If not try Normals->Set vertex normal -> unlock normals.

I was able to fix it by just softening the faces at a low angle in the 30's but now I'm having another problem.

I made an ak47. I spit it down the center and laid out my uv's.
Then I duplicated and mirrored it symetricaly and merged the center verts.

When I average the normals i get an area of dark distortion running symetricaly down the x axis.

Also I'm having an problem with another area. When I select the faces I want and soften them it effects faces I didn't have selected.

Anyone know what the problem may be or a link to a tutorial explaing normals and some rules of thumb?

Thanks

Is history on?
Might try deleteing history or export .obj and import back in.
Im not sure if either would work tho....
