Well well well I am here :D
Good luck everybody. For the GSO I joined 2 months late and I could barely finish the entry so this time I am entering early

I am trying to come up with concepts right now and I am not entirely sure on what to do. One of the concepts that I have is "love is the most spectacular thing there is" and I am talking about 2 characters trying to overcome all obstacles to be together... pretty lame if you ask me but what the hell I like the idea

Another concept comes from my videogame days. I remember playing space simulators and I was always amazed when I had to destroy a capital ship. I remember my hands shaking the first time I came across the Satanas in Freespace 2  so I figured that could be a nice concept as well.

And yet another concept I had is a theater performance in front of a realy big audience. Something like old-theater meets the outer space.

I have to decide soon I guess

Well I like all three concept ideas. I guess the first one would be the most difficult to create and to stay inside the theme and all of them could be pretty original, depending on how you decide on realistaion of the idea. Good luck!

This is my first concept. I figured it will be easier to decide when I have them on paper.
----
I remember watching a movie about a guy that falls in love with a mermaid so the idea is the level of fantasy that young ones can come up with. During a fishing day the boy meets this mermaid and things become pretty much love at first sight, but this would never work out between them because they are from different realms and all that.

Days pass and the mermaid is captured and still the boy goes after her so he sneaks into the place where they keep her captive. He doesn't know but he is being watched, however the people in that place are not menacing but rather amazed at the boy's strong will.

As I said before the concept was very lame and I think this falls outside the theme XD
Anyway I will post a second sketch tonight :)

If you work the background of this scene, you will listen "Very SPECTACULAR idea!"

This scene realy show me a story moment, a spectacular story moment!

As a matter of fact just after I uploaded this sketch I thought of a better idea for the mermaid-man subject. This one will use more the "wow factor", more surprising and all. I won't make the sketch till I finish the one for the second concept though :p

Haha, glad to know im not the only one who has played freespace 2 (I LOVE that game). Seems everyone sees spaceships as cliche though, you'd have to work extra hard to make the scene work without being cliched. The love one is a bit hard to make into a spectacular scene because you have to show the strong emtion of love in just one frame. hehe, this whole challenge is hard, one reason why I havent thought up of anything yet (and a bit busy with school). Good luck on flsuhing out the ideas and compositions and all.

This is my second concept :)

Having conquered the far reaches of the world, humans aimed to a higher goal. They now live peacefuly in the depts of space. Little they knew they were being observed.

A kid was walking with his "robo-nanny" along one of the great halls of one of the stations when he saw a massive capital ship jump in. He was amazed by the unreal scale of that thing. So amazed he didn't realize it had come to destroy them all.

I am currently reworking concept number one. In the meantime tell me what you think of this one.

BTW the kid is saying "look! a spaceship!". Kids are so sweet... :D

Hi Sergio,

I think that the idea with the beatifull mermaid fished by bad guys, ant the other who want to save her is the best (this is my opinion).
It's a very dynamic scene...
Good luck

I'll look forward for progress ;)

Great to find u again! I see u are allready loading your weapons, great start The nermaid loos like a good idea for me, but flugus is right : always push for an impactant action or point of view, that really makes the difference :arteest:

Hello people. Back to the mermaid concept. For this concept I went for the "boy meets girl" concept. The boy diving just like any other day, but bam! that say he met this beautiful young mermaid. Rather than being scared he was astonished by her beauty. He then felt the urge to touch her face and feel her soft skin.

Now the only problem is that I've never done an underwater scene before :banghead: Anyway, there's always a first time...

So what's it gonna be? the huge space killing machine or the beautiful young mermaid? Let me know what you think and I can start working on it tomorrow :)

I still can't decide which one i like better myself. The space one can do well as long as you get the scale and expressions right; and the mermaid one could also do well if you compose the scene perfectly (maybe a camera angle close to the faces showing that "magic" between the two). It's all up to you, good luck with that (try picking the one you feel fulfills the topic the best).

I like this last sketch the most of the series. However, I have to admit that it looks like he is slitting her throat :| LOL Good luck making an underwater scene! Ouch: Water must be hard! Maybe you will have to rent Finding Nemo and see how something like that is pulled off. It could be VERY COOL. It would be a great learning experience for you as well. Good luck and I'm interested to see where this goes!

It's very interesting idea. You got a good story there. Possibly we might of saw the same movie about a guy falling in love with a mermaid, so I can sense the emotion that is giving. I think you should keep contiuning this idea and make it stronger especially for the backdrop.

I don't think for water you need to use any water effects (for underwater), you just need the feel of it, the particles and all that give it volume (and remember everything will be tinted the same color underwater).

Thanks for droping by people. I really appreciate it

I am going for the mermaid story. I also feel it's stronger.

gardogg: you are right. I was actually thinking on Finding Nemo as a reference for this image

Sleepinglion: Yeah, that background kinda worries me. Hopefuly everything will come together smoothly :D

I can't wait to model that mermaid. I have a really good idea for a scale generator

Well, I am going for the mermaid concept. This is my first sketch so I think I will model this guy first.

As you may have seen on my GSO I have this fixation to name the characters I model, and this guy's name is Vincent :)

nemirc
09-10-2005, 04:00 AM
I will try to make a more realistic model, or at least try to keep away from anime-like characters. Mostly because I don't see my mermaid as a "sailor moon under the sea"

Hey man, seems you already made up your mind about which concept you gonna go for, but it's still early in the challenge to maybe think of something else. I think your idea is good, cute romantic, even magic and surreal, but I'm not catching the spectacular aspect here. I don't even recall myself ever being amazed, or shocked watching "splash" or even "little mermaid". Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to drag your idea down here, it's a nice idea, but it might not be the best one you can come up with for this specific contest. Good luck anyway.

I was trying to figure out the "body mass" and I think I will go for the skinny look. I think I will have a "fun" time modeling the ribs  I still can't see a fancy way to make the mermaid's tail. I was thinking to attach the scales to a hair system but I can't see a way to automatically "scale down the scales" as they reach the tip

As for the scissor hands and the pumpkin head, that was just for fun :D

Nice start on Vincent. For the mermaid's scales, you can probably to them as textures instead since fish scales aren't nearly as thick as something like dragon scales ( would almost look flat most of the time).

YOu have a point. I was going for the "I am a poor guy that still lives in my parent's basement and can't even get laid" kind of look but someone so out of shape would not be able to do diving :bounce:

ace4016
09-18-2005, 07:01 PM
Nice work, on Vincent, can't wait to see more muscle definition. Galatea looks good, but one thing I must ask is, are mermaids mammals, fish, or amphibean(sp?). If she's a mammal maybe you can make a correct mermaid and make her have a rubbery lower body, something closer to a dolphin; and maybe instead of gills, a blow hole...errrr....specialized nose:P . Of course this is all up to you, just a small suggestion.

nemirc
09-18-2005, 07:40 PM
Blow hole... I think that would be the mouth

Anyway back to subject
My bet is that they'd have to be fish. If they were anphibian or mammals that would mean they can live outside the water as well which kills the "sea creature" paradigm. I have some very interesting ideas for the mermaid's humanoid skin (something like the kamionans from episode 2), but the tail will be a fish tail.

More to come not so soon :D
I have to get rid of my exams first

Galatea
One of the Nereids (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/n/nereids.html), and the beloved of Acis (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/a/acis.html), a Sicilian shepherd. She was also loved by Polyphemus, who killed Acis with a boulder in jealousy. From his blood, Galatea created the river Acis on Sicily.

I was trying to remember the details on those things. I don't remember where they sell them over here and the images that I found at Yahoo were not that detailed

I will get to that and the legs as soon as I am done with my mermaid :)

dude ask and you shall receive! me and my wife are both SCUBA divers and have everything but tanks and BC's I can take pics of whatever else you need and send them over; (if it isn't boxed up). You might not even need me to do that... check these.. plenty of good reference. You can also go to your local dive shop and aske the owner if you can take pics for an illustration... most likely they won't have a problem with the request.

I like your style of modeling, nice work!

I do have a comment though, on the hand. I'm not sure if you want to make it different, since it's not a human hand anyways, but the index finger on hands is generally shorter than the middle finger, by a fair amount...it doesn't look like it's that much shorter. Could be the angle though.

But, if you're going for that different thing, then it's all good

Good luck!

Atomic Aquatics invented the splitfin and worked so well every other manufacturer followed with their version but IMO this is the best pair of fin I have ever used. Oh they do work, less strain on your kick and yet a more powerful propulsion.

I kinda got tired of modeling (hence the lack of head for Vincent) so I began working on Galatea's textures :)

The basic idea was to have the "tiger fish" look, with stripes on the back and a white belly. I plan to have stripes running from the eyes along the top of the head all te way to the back and also stripes on the arms. I haven't decided if I will use a fish or dolphin tail yet.

Still getting acquainted with bodypaint but it turned to be easier than I thought. It's almost like using a 3D version of photopaint :D

hey nemirc, she's looking good. i really like the way you've done the folds in her neck and her spine at the top  Looks like you're getting the hang of bodypaint. just make sure your UVs are laid out cleanly (no overlaps, and larger areas of the bitmap allocated to areas with more detail like the face), or you're going to do some reworking. (this i know from hard experience)

DrFx
10-13-2005, 11:45 AM
Sergio, this is looking very good! I like the idea of the tigerfish pattern, it should be very interesting. The size of the head in comparison to the body gives the impression that she is young (14-16 years old). If she's an adult, I would shrink it just a bit.

hey! how are you man! your model is very good ! she looks cute! some of your texture problem ,I think is it a projection issue? if you use body paint maybe you just seperate area of color in seperate layer , don't worriy about color yet ,and export that texture to psd and tweak in photoshop! I work this way and I think it safe me a lot of time!

JamesMK

Coming along fine though - texture painting is certainly painful stuff, particularly with a mouse, that's quite a nightmare...

Somebody suggested clonebrushing, I can only agree, that's a good way to get around for all us non-Rembrandtish guys (you and me both)... another way I've found to be helpful is to work out details on a separate layer, and constantly shift from brush tool to eraser and back again.... That's what I usually end up doing: paint a bit, erase all the mistakes, paint the bits you accidentally erased too much of, erase some of the bits that you happened to paint while they really should have stayed erased, then erase some of the things you painted last... followed by painting again (because you yet again erased a bit too much).... and so on... you get the picture... after a few hours, something good usually starts to emerge.

.

artemesia66
10-19-2005, 12:42 PM
LOL. yep, that's the way it goes. but seriously, the best thing about BP is that you can use photoshop layers, so that say, your bump map can have a layer for scales and a layer for veins where the scales are less dominant, and then a gradient layer to modify where these two dominate, etc. also, if you can swing even a small wacom, it will make BP alot more satisfying to use.

The idea is that he is stretching out his hand to touch her right cheek while she is just completely happy

The texture is pretty much done. Don't pay attention to that black thing on the tail for that will be replaced with the real tail shader. The complete texture is just half way to the final look. I want to go for something more "raimbow-looking" for her :)

I have the ground, the characters and the stone on different layers. I am using a painted background (which I will change) for the "far ocean" stuff". I've layered a blue image on top of everything to simulate an "underwater" look.

What's missing: the "fog cones" on the background, small fish school on the background, "caustics lights" on top of pretty much everything and "floating stuff" everywhere... paintFX plants and grass... and some other stuff I can't remember right now ;)

Well weeeellll, a long time i don't post here, Nemirc, you're doing a good job!! Like the pose of the siren. :bounce:

And you've got a lot of layers, really good work.
I think is a little empty for now, but i'm sure it's not finished yet! Give some details at the background. :arteest:

i've done, 3 years ago, a scene in the sea, it was for a dark mood, but, i've used a technics, to give the feeling of the "underwater". I've used plane, and place it in the axis of camera, and change opacity, the more near form camera having the less opacity. I've bend them too. I've paint some details, like particules in the water and "fog", and put it as mask for the plane opacity. After that i've place some lights between the plane, decreasing the multiply form near the camera to far, finishing by negative light to "absorb" the light using attenuation. Add a light up of the scene, axis depend of you compo, and put caustics texture in the light. Using caustic generator (freeware : http://www.lysator.liu.se/~kand/caustics/ ). To give the feeling of caustics.
Must add some modelisate details between the plane to give the feeling of fog absorbing light and details.
Add some effects on toshop, or some fog in 3D scene.

Hope it can help you and that you understand what i want to explain. Just my 2cent

Here's a 'topshop made plan, to explain, opacity % are just as exemple.

I wish you good luck, i'm waitng to seee some update, you've doing a good job keep it up my friend!!

Lighting - it looks good for the well lit area (specially since you're still gonna add the fx from the water surface) but try lowering the light that comes from below.

Hair - Punk might look pretty cool! Like Storm from the X-Men used to wear. Just make sure it's long and flowy (:curious: is that a word?).
Nice going with the glitter effect on the skin! Are you gonna make the finns translucent?

Yeap, some background stuff would spice it up. The shader on the mermaid looks really nice and shiny, while the diver could perhaps use a slightly more lively pose, if you've got time to play around with it, that is.

Good progress at any rate, so just keep the renderer going warm and you'll arrive at the final image right in time

angel
11-22-2005, 02:21 PM
IMO is better now that you can actually see his face. One thing that I didn't notice before but is kinda important is the purple coral on the sand. Coral is not a rocky material or plants like some people think; coral are living organisms, there is no way you will find coral like that growing from the ground. Place those on the bog rocks you have there and it'll make more sense.

Also, the bush looks too much like a regular surface bush and it is throwing your image off.

Maybe you can quickly model a kelp forest and coral reef, to replace it and make it more beliveable.
google image search kelp forest...

Take a look at Finding Nemo if you have it.

yes... for me too, this bush appear a bit disturbing... but maybe it's not the flower or the color wich give me this strange feeling... maybe it neet more algaes and see plants... especially at the base of this bush... too much contrats for the moment with the ground... maybe some pebbles or stones, or sponge...

nemirc
11-28-2005, 04:39 AM
Well, I finally finished my demo and some university stuff I was working on, so here's a new update :D

As you can see the scene has gone through some serious makeover :scream: I was watching Harry Potter yesterday and that part of the lake inspired me to work on this a little more. I can't spend too much time modeling more stuff because I will have finals 2 weeks from now but at least I can add a little more stuff while I still have time :D As you can see I replaced the ground with more rocks. I want to give the impression that they are "half way down". I will add more depth to this because it still feels too shallow.

To be honest I was thinking not to finish this for the challenge due to the time constraints but all these revamps are getting me interested again

nemirc

I rendered everything at 3600x2700 AND I MADE DAMN SURE I STORED THE ZCHANNEL THIS TIME...

Although there are tons and tons of stuff I could add I just don't have enough time, however I am pretty happy with what I have so far  Notice that I removed the "ocean surface caustics thing" at the top of the image and that I aded the sunbeams.

If nobody complains I will upload the final image soon :D

HAHA, finally!

This is it: my spectacular image. The foundation for this image was a sentence that says "The greatest joy belongs to the simple heart", and to me it means that we have to be able to be amazed even at the simplest things :)

The story goes like this:

One not so special day Vincent went to the beach. As he went down he saw this beautiful coral onto a stone. He went to take a closer look when all of a sudden this young mermaid came out from behind the rock and smiled at him. Rather than being scared he extended his arm and touched her skin.

He wanted to stay there forever but unfortunately humans have to breathe so he went back up, but when he returned she was gone.
