View Full Version : Colour to transparency shader?

A newbie question here. I have created a nurbs tube and I want to add a shader that gives a kind of feathering effect, similar to the feathering effects that I would use in my 2D graphics programs. So what I am looking for is a shader that will start with colour and then blend into a transparency at the end. I tried using a ramp for this but couldn't find any transparency settings for each individual colour. Is there any easy way to do this?

yep,
u need to plug a sampler info nodes "facing ratio" into the v coord of the ramp.

Hi all,
I need to do the same thing I'm trying to create a shader for hair using a ramp shader. I want the hair to have a feathered effect towards the tip so I want to be able to fade it into transparency and I read bloggo_12's response and I understand that I need to plug the sampler info nodes "facing ratio" into the V coord of the ramp node but I can't figure out how to get it to just fade out at one end rather than making the whole object transparent....
Any Ideas?

You probably don't actually want to use an incidence shader on hair if you just want it to feather the tip. I'm not sure how Maya's Hair material system works, however you *should* be able to simply fray the tips to "feather them" or apply a simple ramp transparency to the % of hair length.

Hi im_thatoneguy,
Maybe I should have mentioned before, I'm not using maya hair I'm just using a Nurbs plane sculpted into the shape I want the hair to be and I want to apply the shader to it.
