Ok, here's my sketch. I don't know if it's because i'd read so much knight and dragons story lately, but here is my vision of the final fight between a couragous knight and a dragon who's put fear every where in the kingdom.

maybe i'll come with a other idea later. My over time at work give me a lack of inspiration.

I already saw many of the work of the contestant and i find there is plenty of good subject. People here are very talentuous.

This is my second entry for a contest here since "master and servant" and i still have a lot to learn.

so on this i wish to you all good luck!

Hi everybody! I don't have much time yet to really work on my peace. Here, on this version, i start to place very fast my caracters ( horse, dragon and a bit of the knight.) But i still have plenty to do.

I'm not real happy with my perspective view yet. I'll try to fixe it before i go too far in the process. So don't be shy to give me some advise. =0)

Hi there!

I colored here my caracters. Don't worry about the background it is only a placeholder for now. I'll concentrate on giving details on the horse, knight and dragon before.

Ok, i just notice that the front legs of the horse are infront of the tongue of the dragon. I will fixe that for my next unpload.

Enjoy!

Hi everybody!

ok, I said earlier that i'll work on the details of my caracters, but this morning I couldn't help my self by sketching the background. I noticed in my process that I jump too fast from one step to the other. Now I start to feel that I about to mess my work.

I will set back for a while, just to make sure that i'm doing the wright thing at the wright time. I notice that I am working like that I have only two weeks to do the work. I have to learn how to create arts the wright way to avoid to find my self creation block like it is now. =0S

Anyway, that it for now.

So enjoy! =0)

Hi Aline,

Nice work so far on your sketch. I like the stylised look of your dragon and the horse's expression is very dramatic. Will you be doing different angles of your scene?

Thank you!

I already did change my view, but i'm not quite sure of it so far. At first I was please with this view but since I tried to put the background i'm not so contempt with the view no more. Maybe i'll change it again. I want the viewers to feel the action, to be right in it. But I have difficulties to achieve it.

Thank you though for your encouragment.

hie there~i think i prefer the position of the guy in the earlier piece, seems alil more dynamic than the current one.play around with the mood, the greyish sky color seems alil odd matching with the forground.nice action of the horse~keep it coming:)

cyberarts
09-23-2005, 04:56 AM
Yes, for the background it's only a placeholder for now. I only started the forground of it. I wait to have inspiration and patience to attack it . ;o) For the knight position, i'll try to recover the old version. I already reworked the armor: "DOH!". (I didn't submit that version yet). But since I found the recepies to do it, so I'm sure that I'll have no problem to redo the armor.

Thank you again for your advises!:)

I image how your work will play around if you'll cover the dragon with bright metallic scales!!! And it seems to me you should reduce the fragment of the right rock. It makes less evident the edge of the sword and horns.

Good luck!

The horse is particularly good: the angle, the expression. Very dramatic.

Maybe if you put more of a curve in the body of the hero (like a soft 'c' shape), it would increase the sense of power in him.

Also, if you increase the angles in the background so that they point inward toward the action in the foreground, it might punch out the image more. Not sure. You would have to experiment more.

Great work though! I love the concept. Looking forward to seeing more.

Hi Cyberarts... your work is looking really good this far... love the horse, his expression is fantastic. I was just about to say I really liked position 2 for the knight, but now I see it in practice, I'm not so sure... maybe it needs the scabbard putting back in... or it might be that the angle he's jumping at and his placement makes him look like he's riding the dragon! And actually, thinking about it, if you follow that swing through, he wouldn't do the dragon much damage.. so on hindsight, maybe 1 might be the better pose. And bring back the red dragon from the first sketch, he was so mean looking!

That aside, great work with the details you've got in so far, I look forward to seeing how this gets on!

Hi Cyberarts - you've got some powerful action going on there, it looks very promising!

Something that doesn't sit right with me is the bright red colour of the dragon since the ambient light is green. If the light source is green, then it doesn't have any (or much) red wavelength to reflect back, hence red objects will appear really dark. It just makes the dragon seem a bit incongruous and not part of the scene if you know what I mean.

Also, the lighting seems a bit inconsistent - the character's armour appears to be lit from different angles in different places.

I really like the terrified horse and the strength of emotion you're putting into it!

Hi there!

Tonight, i work on the dragon position. There is no detail yet on it for now. I just wonder how I to find the patience to do it. I added some flame that came out of the mouth of the dragon. (Is it too much?). Anyway, when i'll finish to place my caracters i will figure something to make them fit with the background. I know that the dragon is contrasting with the color of the background. (Maybe it will be easier to change the color of the backgrouns) i'll see what I can do. I don't want my peace to look like a pizza. =0S

So that's it for now.

Enjoy! =0)

Lync

The flame coming out of the dragon's mouth is not too much. I actually like that there is only a spittle of flame rather than the traditional full gush of flame that we often see with dragons.

The image is definitely starting to come together. If you don't change the colours in the dragon, you will not only have to change the colours in the background, but also the colours reflecting onto the hero and the horse. The red colour would be boucing everywhere because it is so bright.

Hiya Aline! You done such a fantastic job on the dragon and the horse simply is amazing, so much expressin and well painted.
a tiny sugestion, if i was the night i wouldnt try to stryke the dragon from that osition, i'd turn the sword and try to stick my sword into his back/neck, whatever offers. hope that made sense.

Hi there!
I'm trying to find time to continue my work. But here is my last version. First I tried to change the posision of the sword of the knight, and the position of one of his legs. I'm still asking myself some questions about how to get a dynimic jump for the knight although his armor can limited his mouvment. Anyway, i'll see later if I have to work on him again. I also work on the detailing of the dragon body. I'm far from over with that task but I'm gettin' trough.

Thatís looking very nice.

I do think a little more work on the shadows would add to this image, making it more dynamic. The lighting still seems too general, muted...considering that it's night time.

It might also be nice to see more details on the dragons wing(s), perhaps veins or even some tattered holes, maybe make the colouring less even here and there more patchy? Just a thought. On the whole I like the idea, just keep going with the details and lighting. For example, try adding a nice dark shadow under the dragon...

Very cool work.
Some comments; it would be cool to see more color variation in the background. Also the knights legs overlap and the two legs blend together as one. It would be visually stonger to have the legs not overlap. One trick is to draw a figure as a silhouette to help with figureing out the positioning on the legs.

Good wing on the dragon. I think his head a body are still a little too close in value and saturation, but I might be wrong.

This is looking very impressive now, great work on those details fella! Maybe the holes in the wings look a little too uniformed, maybe a more 'tattered' look would make it look more natural and so realistic. Having said that, you might want this kind of look. Just a suggestion.

Impressive work.

Thank you guys for your comments.

Steve-h: I am thinkin' the same way about the wing. I'll see what I can do to make the ripping more natural.

Jose Pardo: I understand what you mean (I think...). I'll see what I can do to fixe that saturation situation.

henryz_jetsam and tAsty BITs: For the knight position you might be right, but I think for now that I will keep that pose. (I already did some changes during the process). Maybe if I have some time left I'll try a other pose. But thank dough! =0)

For now my main concern is the background. I did some test (I didn't show them yet) but I'm not satisfied with what I did so far.

The wing is looking better, I would suggest trying to get some thickness into it though, right now it looks like it's very thin, like it has no height value.

A tip for making the characters look like they are really in the environment is to use some of the same colour that are in the environment, in the characters. like if your background has green in it, then the characters might be backlit with green, or have green in their shadows.

keep going

Hi,

nice details and drama.
However I think the painting has to be simplified, because everything is a bit on the same level.
The cliffs, the moon, the castel , and even the dragon's wings don't need to be as much detailed as the knight and the horse, or the dragon's face. Simplify the backgrounds, and it will create more depth ; the spectator will read the action easily, and it will be more spectacular.

Good luck.

hi man! Some fine arts going on here in this thread :) I must fully agree with Arctis, who said exactly what I had in mind. Sometimes its enough just to show some silhuets in the background to show everything (and than the human brain reads as if its completly detailed)... There I mean esspecially the castle and clifs. Dont make them bring too much attention, coz they r not the main interesting point in the pic. as well the dragons body dont need to be that detailed. I know that after a lots of hours of work on some part its difficult to simply erase everything (huh, how many times I have to battle with myself for erasing some parts out of the image :D) but at the end it shows as a much better result. And the piec is also much easier to read for the viewer. Keep up the good work buddy! Will stay in touch for further updates.

arctis and NinjaASSN, i understand your point here. I have to learn when to stop the detailling. Or at least where to keep the details at the right place.:D
I'll see what I can do to create the depht that you are talking. I don't mind to redo the background.
I am learning here how to created good illustration. I notice with time that it is different working on computer compare to paper. I'm drawing sence I can handle a pen. Now i am feeling like a begginner when i'm trying to do something on my computer. :p But i'm still learning...

Thank you for your tips. I'll apply them on my next submission. :)

See ya!

Your image is really starting to come together really well with all the elements meshing well together. My main comment would be the dragon's wing. I personally feel it draws the eye too much away from the action. It may be because it has too much texturing detail in it.

The other comment I have is the dragon's eye. He appears to be looking beyond the horse at something outside the frame. It might be better with the dragon's focus completely on the horse.

Great work! Nearly there!

Hishhhhhhhhhh!
I'm not proud of what I did. I try to remove the detailing around those main caracters so I can have a depht feel. I think that I did too much! =0S
Don't worry I still have my original intact. ;0)

It's just a test.I hope that I can nail it next time.

So see ya!

Hi! I think that the cliffs in the foreground must not be blurred, and only the distant background may be blurred, but not too much. And one more. In my view the moon looks like a lamp because of the large, dark shadow. I think you should remove it. But it's only my opinion. I wish you good luck! :)

I prefer the image you posted on Oct 31, IMHO the color was better and I agree with Artis comments. Stay on it you are making good progress!

Ok now i'm back on track. I work on my original one. I did some blurring on the far background and a little bit on the dragon tail. Now i'm more satisfy with the result. By going slowly i will not mess things up.

So that's it for now. =0)

Enjoy!

See ya! =0D

Hi there! ok, I know that I just said that I have no time to work on my drawing. But I take time to look at it and I couldn't resist to tweek things. By lookin' at the image I found that my background was a bit too greeny, so I tone it down a bit. Now the green does not attack my eyes anymore. Hope that you agree.

So I think that I'm almost done with this art. This doesn't mean that I am finish, "au contraire!" ;0)

Thank you for your feedbacks, they are very precious.

So enjoy!

See ya

It works well as a whole what is the most important I think. With some lighten parts u also put some details in front. Now, for the final touch I suggest u to play a bit with color, saturation and level settings, to get as much as u get from this piece. Good luck in submiting the final piece! :)

Good Job! Good detail, step away from it for a week if you can and look at it with fresh eyes then.

I there! Here I just added some small details on the front. Like bits of rocks here and there. It's seems that I'm done with this art. I have to rework my artline before submiting the final image.

So thank you all for your comments! They still appriciated. =0)

So 'till next time,
See ya!=0D

Very nice piece i have to say but did you try to color the
background with a blue tone ? maybe the moonlight scenery
would be more distinct. greetings

So here is my art line. It's not my best work cause i draw directly in photoshop. Yes I admit I draw directly over my main work. I didn't feel to redoing the drawing entirely. Shame on me! I hope that on the next contest I will have acquire a scanner so I can show what I can really do with a pen. The end is coming very fast. I still have to submit my final final. It's coming...So that's it for now...See ya!

Hi!

When I started this contest I was reading a series of fantastic novels that were telling a story about knights, dragons and other fantastic creatures in an imaginary kingdom. Those stories inspired me this image of a couragous knight fighting against the last dragon who is threatning an entire kingdom. In this image after a suprising attack from the dragon, the horse felt to the ground as the knight jump to give the ultimate hit to save the life of his fellow horse and the kingdom. There it is. That is the story behind this image.

Thank you,

With all my best regard,

Aline Desruisseaux (cyberarts).
