Welcome, Kory! Are you going to be like MonsitJ and do both a 2D and 3D one this time 'round? Or did you just sign up in the wrong category? ;) Either way, looking forward to seeing your work again. Good luck!
09-07-2005, 06:54 AM
Go KoryH!!! Will there be any Spectacular Children's Book images here? *hopes* *hopes* *hopes* :bounce:

09-07-2005, 06:57 AM
Yay Kory nice to see u again dude
09-07-2005, 08:03 AM
Well thanks for the heys!
I am going to do the 2D for one Idea and when I get inspired I might go for the 3D as well.
We will see how things go. We still have time.
Gook luck everyone!!!

Here is something I am thinking about.
I wanted to do something historical, well my fantasy version historical anyway.
This depicts a young aztec boy flying over a waterfall. Kinda obvious. I might play with the staging but this is the jist of it.
09-09-2005, 05:17 PM
this is a character for a series of stories I have been telling my daughter.
I want to do a painting of a hude rave like party in the swamp. imagine dozens of these guys dancing aroung a fire and with a huge drum circle.
could be spectacular huh?
09-09-2005, 05:19 PM
wow! this is pretty damn cool kory! the image reminds of a nature programme!:D beautiful shot. (the first idea that is)
09-09-2005, 05:58 PM
Hi Kory... so you've joined in the 2D this time, eh?
Looks promising... A big dance with swamp monsters sounds pretty spectacular!
09-09-2005, 06:49 PM
Thanks yAdam. I really think this would be a cool image.
But I am leaning towards the swamp monster idea.
I kinda figured Duddlebug would like something like the swamp monster.
I will do some sketches of what I was thinking about how the dance party would look.
I think that one people saw the scale of the jamboree, They would be hooked.
And yes, I a doing the 2D this time. that extra D is too much work! for me right now.
Although I will probably use 3D to lay out the final shot and then paint over it.
I tend to work that way quite a bit 25% 3D and the rest good old fashioned digitalpainting on top.
09-09-2005, 07:05 PM
hhaha looks excellent, very bad qaulity image though, with all the pixelization etc.
09-09-2005, 07:27 PM
Yeah I was having a problem with the file size.
I fixed it here at home. Maybe I will put up a new waterfall image just So I don't have a crappy one for people to look at.
09-09-2005, 07:37 PM
Hi Kory ! glad to see you again here! i still remember your 3d entry in GSO ,now you are in 2d? good luck man! and hope you join 3d aswel:cool:
waterfall pic is very good. Go for it.
09-10-2005, 04:09 AM
Hey thanks mon I remember yours as well.
I may not have time or the idea for the 3D.
Unless I do the waterfall in 3D and the swamp monster in 2D. Or my other idea.
Hmm I'll Have to think about it.
Ranath, Thanks. I will definatly explore it a bit more. But It reminds me of things I have worked on recently so I might have to ditch it or really make it different.

Here is a different angle for the first flight concept. just to get a feel for the character and vibe of the moment.
09-10-2005, 06:50 AM
Here is a new version of the first flight concept. I went to go resave the old one because of crappy compression and ended up re painting mosr of it.
Good thing. I like this much better.
09-10-2005, 06:57 AM
BTW I figured out why I had such a problem saving out my files at 150kb and having such crappy compression with a small pixel dimention.
Some how I had a color profile assosiated with the file that caused a lot of bloat.
Maybe it came from switching back and forth between Painter and Photoshop?
AARRGGHH I feel like such a noob. Ha I guess after using Photo shop for close to 15 years you start forgetting more than you know.

This latest comp is really nice. The overall pallette and feeling of distance have been done very well. I'm really looking forward to this thread after browsing through your portfolio. You've got some really great colors and value grouping. Keep going with it! Oh, what's that thing in the lower lefthand corner? :applause:
09-10-2005, 08:11 AM
Its always good to hear from another ACCD guy.
The strangs scribble and coke can looking thing will eventually be some sort of large carved idol. There will be several of them along the edge of the falls. just some thing to tie into the city in the distance.
Now that I have the idea there, I need to start doing some research. getting as much reference on the subject as possible. Nothing can beat some good reference even if I take extream liberties with it the base will be on a solid foundation of reality. People seem to respond better to images that have something familiar in them. Then it's fun to take them for a ride with all the other crazy stuff.
09-10-2005, 08:29 AM
Solid concept painting there, I'm impressed. Though you probably already know it, since you've tried another, more 'involved' angle, the subject is way too small and is swallowed up by the background. An original idea, however, and one I'm sure you'll do justice to. Good start!
09-10-2005, 08:44 AM
Kind a agree with Speaky(again,ha,ha)for the fact that the background is indeed very dominating.
But,wooohooo, there are some great colors and feeling in this pics!!!So smooth atmosphere.
Impatient for your next steps!!!
09-10-2005, 11:02 AM
Ahh , this latest sketch is enchanting!
awesome colors, i feel the water!
*sits down to enjoy the view and opens the can of strawberry jam
somebody left in the bushes* now, where to find some waffles and coffee?
09-10-2005, 11:21 AM
holy shit on a stick!!
09-10-2005, 12:20 PM
Oh yea Kory! This is what i'm talking about! Awesome sketch.
Keep on rocking man!
09-10-2005, 01:10 PM
beautiful scene and nice color comp. Referenzes?...how real do you want to make it? :D
09-10-2005, 01:27 PM
Nice concept Kory... it's an epic (and spectacular!) environment.
Is there gonna be a 'flying' thing close up to the camera?
09-10-2005, 05:22 PM
I am going to try and make it beliveable, but probably not too "real" as in photo-real.
More like those cool hudson river valley dudes.
And I still havent decided if I should make the civilization a bit more advanced .
There is something compelling about acient cities with cool floating ships in them.
You know chariots of the gods sort of thing.
09-10-2005, 08:20 PM
Nice start, thers already some mood in it
And far from crash boom bang car explosions :bounce:
09-11-2005, 03:27 AM
Man these sketches are hittin' good stuff man, good luck to ya, holla!
09-11-2005, 03:45 AM
hi, very nice, it's calm but still with a lot of depth to it, it gives that feel
09-11-2005, 07:56 AM
Yeeeaaahhhh Nevada in the House.
Thanks for the comments
when you get the chance throw down a black chip on 13 for me at the roulette table. HA.
seriously. Thanks for checking out my progress.
I will do some character sketches next and explore the possibility of adding some more high-tech stuff layered in. Not too heavy handed. just some subtle things here and there,
I try to stick to the olde 70/30 rule.
09-11-2005, 09:04 PM
This wiev is really spectacular and this jumping guy really crazy :D For now its great. I hope to see more soon. Good luck
09-11-2005, 10:11 PM
Kory! Great to see you back in the challenges. I have to say, my heart leapt when I saw your name and thumb on the list, and then it took a nosedive when I saw what you'd decided to do! (my own entry is uncannily similar in scenary but different story altogether)... so I'm going back to the drawing board, cause I know when I'm outclassed! (Which is secretly a good thing).
I love the waterfall scenery, you have such an amazing grasp of light and color, and the idea of having a more advanced civilisation is not only a great idea, but one I'm sure you'll carry off with aplomb.
Best of luck with this, I'm rooting for you!
09-12-2005, 06:38 AM
Pawlack- Thanks. I hope people don't miss that guy. I am hopeing that he will be subtle enough that when people look at this they have a two stage responce.
First oh wow that's pretty. Or something similar. and THEN oh Crap is that a guy going off that water fall. and then Jeez that's cool
Well I guess that is three stages.
Zephhri- Thank you for the kind words. Waterfalls can be pretty spectacular and come with some built in metaphors. It is not suprising that multiple people have chosen to include them. I have no exclusive rights to the concept of water and gravity. I like you idea and would think it a shame for you to abandon it.
09-13-2005, 02:46 PM
This latest concept painting is grand and I really like it, I do think the character should be closer to the viewer though. It is images like these that have encouraged me to enter the 2d challenge as well as the 3d, I may be knocking on you door for advice as I haven't done a large painting like this before.
Anyways, good luck with this.
09-15-2005, 02:22 AM
Hi Mike thanks.
I am glad you were inspired to enter the 2D challenge. Sometimes 3D gets more "press"
than us 2D guys. Ask any questions you want.
I will try to get my character designs up tonight, so watch out for those.
I also have found some fantastic reference for the landcape and some special things.
Right now I am leaning toward the concept "what if" the Aztecs and Mayans did not get conquered by the Spanish. what would there civilization look like in the late 19th century.
Spectacular I hope.
09-15-2005, 02:25 AM
Sounds, like a plan Kory! I will be patiently waiting!
09-24-2005, 03:17 AM
very nice concept. azteks are fascinating and had a high scientific standard, still were bound strongly to the nature. how about some fancy steam engine based choppers or zepelin type of flying objects maybe? hehe, looks like mr Kolumbus is back;)
Have great fun Kory and I'm looking forward next update! rock on!
09-24-2005, 06:29 AM

11-05-2005, 09:49 PM

11-06-2005, 01:18 PM
