I'm really stumped for compositions I like here. The way I see it, the subject matter could be one of the following (not exhaustive):

1) Scenic View - mountains, lake, ocean, space, vista of Mars, etc.
2) Some event with lots of people - fireworks, celebration, spacecraft launch
3) Disaster, natural or otherwise - earthquake, crash, tidal wave (though I don't feel I'll work in this mileu due to recent events)
4) Heist - bank robbery, etc.

For some reason the first image that jumped into my head was that famous picture of the sailer kissing the woman in Times Square at the end of the Second World War. If only I could come up with a composition with that amount of feel and back story present within it.

Concept sketches to come once I get a composition idea in my head that I like!

So this is the first concept I've come up with that I like. Typical office, typical guy, thinking of what he could be doing with his time.

I'd probably avoid the stereotypical thought bubbles :), but I like the idea of having the 'thoughts' outside the main frame.

Blech. Last night's idea has already waned on me.

OK, I'm going to have to take a mulligan on this one :)

I like this - I'm gonna go with it. It's basically a figure study but with a spectacular backdrop. I may add other players in later, but for now I like the composition.

Here's my first pass at the modelling of the player. A few bits of musculature to tweak here and there, but basically done.

Oh, and clothes too! :)

you should work more on the pose. you want put as much power as you can into it? the first thing i would do is to put his hand, holding the ball, body and the opposite leg into one continuous curve - you would then the feel that tension running through his body from toes to fingertips. try not to leave his back straight, and twist pelvis and so that hips are not at the same level (the same applies to shoulders).

That was a great suggestion, thanks. I think the pose is much more dynamic now.

Update - tweaked pose slightly, basic clothing.

OK, VERY basic clothing :)

make the shirt outside of the shorts. There seems to be something funky with the hips. I'm not sure if you have done your homework (reference searching) but I would suggest you find some goon Michael Jordan "Flight" shots... thure must the thousands of them around.

I have plenty of pics of Jordan and others doing jump shots. In all of them, the shirt is tucked into the pants. eg.

I do agree that the hip area looks a little weird, and I'm planning to tweak it. Thanks for your comments!

well, I'll be damed! I always thought that the shirt was on the outside... if it would have been baseball instead I wouldn't have goofed ;) It just looked odd to me, probably was the lack of wrinkles....

Completed modelling on the player. Most of the texturing is done, update for that coming soon.

I'm also planning on wiping that blank, bemused look off of his face :)

First pass at putting it all together. Lighting needs to be improved, and there's some texturing still to do.

Completed textures and improved lighting. Earth background looks a bit lame since I just quickly photoshopped it in there. Compositing and effects to come once I can render it at full resolution!

If you're reading this, I'd love to hear some comments, since my thread has been a little...um...quiet during this challenge :|

Close to final backdrop image composite. Some effects to come, but basically complete.
