Here are the low rezolution towns folk. I've done a male, female and child version of various poses. They are all built from the same mesh and share the same u.v. map, so texturing them was easy. I did a few other planes for the air strip as well, to conect the main character to the town.

I've been working on the character poses a bit, and trying renders from various angles. It's hard finding one that shows everything well (so if you see one that you think is the best, let me know). The pose will have to fit with the rest of the composition, so it's hard to say which is best without the backgound. I'll post a render of everything together soon.

Hi Alexi, You've made some great progress of late... I like the 4th pos way better than the others... I know it doesn't show much of the work you've done but for me it works better to have this machine flying toward us... Good luck with the final comp mate;)

Here is an image of the town and character together. I went with a pose that was half way between no.1 and 4 (from my last posting). I'm not sure if the image is working just yet. Once I'm happy with the position of the kid and background I'll fix up the crappy cloud effects and do some proper lighting. I'm working on a texture for the ocean, rather then using a shader because I'll be able to customize it to the shoreline. Crits are welcome, (there is still a lot of time for me to play around with the composition).

Looks really nice at this point.

The composition really works well IMHO, though it might be worth exploring if it could be a good idea to have the right wing overlap some of the city below. Right now there is a slight chance that the scale is less readable since the plane and the city occupy separate spaces so to speak. An overlap might prevent that.

And I guess the city as such needs some subtle distance haze, to further accentuate how far away it is compared to the flying kid.

Very good and admirably clean work here!

Nice.

I'd suggest putting an overall gradient on the water, making it darker near the top, which would help the composition.

Very nice models and comp! I just saw small misstake on scale ;) not sure about that...but u see these stairs going up into village, comparing to building scale they r pretty big :) people would have to climb to get on top :)

Anyway keep up with good work!

...concerning the remark of Dodgeas3d about stairs, that really don't disturb me... long stairs like that exists in outdoor, that give to people a large way to access...

Thanks everyone for your comments. I see that the stairs leading down the hill side are a bit too big, so I'll add another in between each existing one. I'm also going to add a vapour trail behind the airplane, (perhaps one that spirals back to the runway). There are lots of little things to fix also, like the characters skin and eye colours and some of the decals on the plane. I think I'll widden the composition as well, showing more empty space ahead of the character, right now everything feels a bit crowded, when it is supposed to feel vast and free. Alexi.

Well, I spent a whole weekend rendering out layers for the character and the background. I kept doing full rez renders and discovering little things I wanted to change or improve, and I changed my mind on the camera placement a few times as well. But I'm done now, and I'm adding in the effects and painting out some mistakes. Here is the character render, which still needs the propellor effects added in, some reflectivity on the gogles and touch-ups on the hair.

Here is a view of the town with all the render layers composited together. I'm still working on a better ocean texture (I used the ocean shader from maya, but it looks a bit repetative and unnatural). Where the sea meets the shore I'm going to add in waves and surf from photos, and I'll paint in the myst and splashes from the waterfall by hand in photoshop.

man.
its looking really awsome !
my respect to you for working on all the small details (and keeping it nicely affordable) ! :bounce:

2 quick things -

I think the biggest weakness besides the ocean shader is the grass. I think you should try a bit more variation in the colors and maybe more bumpiness.

try rendering a good occlusion pass over night. I think it could do wonders to your (allready really good) render (by better showing all the details you made) !

I've been adding some waves and myst on top of the sea the waterfall. I used maya ocean shader as a base, and added waves from images in photoshop. My concern now is that they look too real compared to the town model (which had sort of a cartoony feel to it). The falls and river may need to be a bit more transparent as well.

ChrisThatGuy
11-29-2005, 02:02 PM
Keep them realistic, it makes them quickly readable. I'd suggest darkening the water near the top of the composition, to help the silhouette of the town.

Thanks for the comments about the top of the waterfall. I tried to blend the end of the river and the start of the falls with a bit of rapids, and I made the edge less straight. I'm still no sure about the base of the falls, where it meets the sea, that may need some more work. Overall I have to make the falls less white so it does not stand out so much.

kreuz
11-30-2005, 01:01 PM
good sketch , how do you make the waterfalls??by painting?

alexichabane
11-30-2005, 02:02 PM
I made the waterfalls with geometery and a texture in the maya (see some of the earlier posts), but it did't look so great so I overlayed some waterfall imagery (of the rapids and falling water) in photoshop, and painted everything them together. So it's a mix of 3d, photoshop trickery and digital painting. Alexi.

DimitrisLiatsos
11-30-2005, 02:05 PM
That's much better Alexi....white is good there ..don't low that down i think...concerning the end of fall (where it meets the sea)..u just need a white cloud there...and u are ready ..i think

I like the image so far but I think, composition wise the whiteness (as youve allready said) will ''hit'' the image, so IMHO tone the white down (more blueish?)

some nice post trickery there!

Zongo
11-30-2005, 04:37 PM
i dont think sergiokomic is right (no offense ment :))
you should leave the white as it is, its just the right amount. but you should add that cloud of water at the bottom of the waterfall, i think that would make it really good!
cool view anyway

I understand the point of view of Sergio... but here, it's really a affair of personal tast... I think that Alexi is working with a particular design... not realistic of course... anf that kind of interpretation can be really adapted to his concept. And personally, I really appreciate

Here is a view of eveything together. I've added in the spinning propellor and some cloud effects (thought I'm still playing around with the blur effect). I extended the canvas to be longer, and have more open space in front of the character, and I have the wing overlapping the town slightly. All the elements on separate layers and is still easy to move around, do let me know if you any suggestions or comments regarding this composition.

So here is the final image, it is fairly close to the original sketch, minus the second character of course. The story or subject is more about the experience of the character rather then a specific narrative. I wanted to capture a sense of wonder and excitment, and the thrill if flying high above a fantastical landscape. The character, I imagined, is part of some type of flight school, and this is her first solo flight. Down in the city I included more planes and other pilots preparing to take off. Originally there where to be two characters, just racing and having fun in the skies, but I think the image works with just one. Thanks to everyone who gave me feed back and suggestions, it was really helpful and allowed me to create the best possible image within the deadline. Over all I'm happy with the final work (and unlike my master and challange entry, which I didn't really finish in time), there is not too much I'd change. Alexi.

I didn't use any fancy effects for my clouds, though i would have liked to. I used about five or six photographic images and then did alot of painting and layering in photoshop. I added a bit of a radial blur on the clouds to create a speed-line effect, which is kind of cheesy, but it adds more life into the composition. I'm not sure if the clouds look too "real" compared to the more cartoony style of the character and town, but i didn't have time to experiment with maya rendered clouds. Alexi.
