yo folks ... cool to see you all again here. I cant wait to get back to my pc and get down to business :D
im more steady with the mouse now ... no more sketching with hand this time hehe
heres a first quick sketch
i want to make a scene with a vitorious army coming home ... some riding on giant robots ..people waving banners everywhere..a huge crowd cheering
have to try different angles now because i want more focus on the giant robot thingies :)
09-10-2005, 11:43 AM
it's very blurry, u should go have your eyes checked man...
my sketches are blurry most of the time
09-10-2005, 11:54 AM
ah , I thought that was the final pic
09-10-2005, 11:56 AM
Cool concept Vahn! I like your sketch, did you really paint all of it with a mouse!?
Anywho, nice to see ya and good luck!
"The big mouse" has joined this challenge aswell? :) Good to see you, looking forward to seeing you'r wicked ideas! Cool concept btw, though I can't quite make out everthing thats going on in it yet.
maybe more like this ... just with bigger robots :)
09-10-2005, 01:14 PM
bah, u just flipped it sideways! but, yea might be cool, more sketcheszz !
09-10-2005, 01:53 PM

09-10-2005, 04:05 PM
Yeah, go Vahn!!! Cheers and good luck!!! :bounce:
09-10-2005, 04:10 PM
This is looking nice. I like the lighting and the colours, great work! Keep it going, good luck!
this could be one in the parade
09-10-2005, 07:19 PM
ooooh, interesting design for the robot. I definately like the vertical composition. It has more dynamics and dig the colour comps too mate. Can't wait to see more. No critzs...for now
09-10-2005, 07:23 PM
hey man, interesting idea... it's a old war scene? could be rusty giant robots:lightbulb
09-10-2005, 07:41 PM
Cool robot. Maybe you could have some soldier sitting on the outer hull, like how WWII soldiers used to hitch rides sitting on the outside of a tank.
Noob : thx m8 .. im trying :)
Rebeccak : straight ahead miss Kimmel !
enialadam: thank you :)
Arc80 : oooh i cant wait to see more either :D
Ducklator : mhhm not really old just different and yeah kind of rusty but still gleaming in the sun hehe
ChrisThatGuy: cool idea .. ill do that on the next robot .. thx :D
09-10-2005, 08:50 PM
welcome to the challenge, nice concepts so far!
09-10-2005, 10:12 PM
Hi mate! good luck with the challenge...
niice robot, it's some kind of tripod, right? the "head" shape looks a bit strange...hmmm...
I'll try to keep an eye on this, looks promising... keep it up!
09-10-2005, 10:14 PM
Hi Vahn! Jsut saw your thread today :)
Good luck with the challenge - and looking forward to seeing what comes out of those neat concepts so far
09-11-2005, 06:20 AM
awsome poster design, I really love it, I would like one
have good time,
heres another one
09-11-2005, 01:31 PM
Fairly loose and abstract but I like the effect.
heres a very rough composition sketch but it captures the idea of the glorious homecoming army parade
you will see soldiers mix with people on the street ... people throwing their hats in the air and basically just everybody celebrating :)
light will be a strong reddish orange afternoon sun mixed with the cool shadows of the marching robots
ill keep on making robots and some characters and i'll try to refine the composition so it becomes more clear
really great concept!! i like it..good luck :buttrock:
09-11-2005, 03:50 PM
Hi Vahn! Great to see you here! I really loved your first concept. It has a nice carneval feeling. Anyway Nice colors and I lov the robots! Keep posting:)
beelow: yo .. glad you like it :)
elmasfeo: hola amigo .. yeah some kind of tripods they are
Overchord : hi m8 .. just saw your bear .. i think you should do that one :D
Korline : you can have one hehe :)
OrO: good luck to you too ...but more important : have fun :D :D
Brutal Monk: hi there .. yeah this kind of carneval parade feeling is what im aiming for
i refined the sketch a little bit
oh and dont bother about the colors ... thats just me on too much coffee :D
09-12-2005, 10:55 PM
Wicked Cool concept man! i would like to see some more angles on the scene. Big robots are rockin too.
I'll be watchin'
09-13-2005, 01:55 AM
The robot is looking cool mate  and i'm liking the colour comp of this one. The warm and the cool colours are pretty well balance. will wait and see what you come up with next.
yeah ncdsn id like to see some more myself :D hehe im just trying atm but its hard to get a good shot over the crowd + the underside of a robot + closeup people ...but ill work it out somehow
Archie thx m8 .. hope your street fills up soon :)
09-13-2005, 09:50 AM
Thats some pretty wicked stuff there vahn. I see you keep improving. Ever get a tablet yet?
yo corey ..good to see you :) are you gonna take part as well ? i hope so ...
yeah ill get a tablet in October .. never had enough spare money in the last few months to buy one ...and yeah i know there are very cheap ones but i want a wacom intuos 3 A4 tablet :D :D :D
09-13-2005, 10:07 AM
Sweet. Well then keep up the good work, I'll keep an eye on this thread. Expecting great things from you. Beleive it.
09-13-2005, 11:53 AM
Hi Vahn, great concept! Not seen anything like this around, which is a good thing! I like the feel of the latest sketch, though it make me wondr why there is such a large empty space in front of the robot.. maybe to stop people getting squished, but if you added more celebrating people in there it would help get across the carnival type atmosphere. But all the colours and light are really well done. best of luck
kory: oh-oh...*starts sweating* ok ill do my best :D ... you still didnt say if you would enter the challenge :P
Zepyhri: ooh thank you ... well yeah they would be squished i guess ..but im still looking for a different shot where you can see more of the army. thats when youll see more people i promise :)
09-13-2005, 03:20 PM
A Spectacular Triumph! - very good idea, I'm very interested to see how/whether you choose to incorporate your most characterful characters with the pomp and splendour of the occasion. good luck
09-13-2005, 04:34 PM
kory: oh-oh...*starts sweating* ok ill do my best :D ... you still didnt say if you would enter the challenge :P
Yeah, thats Corey, but yeah. I allerady entered into the challenge. I just dont really understand it. I keep reading it over and over yet it still doesnt make sense to me. I mean, what's truely considered spectacular and whats not?
Avatarist : weehee thx.. well to be honest ... im looking forward to it :D
Corey: the topic is very open thats true ... but you will think of something while looking at the other entries here ... still a lot of time to think, scribble, paint and play
dont worry m8
for me spectacular is an event more or less in a short period of time, where something happens, that just radiates a strong energy and captures a lot of people at the same time ... and inflicts them with kind of the same feeling/emotion when they witness that certain event... may it be the huge orca whale crushing 2 japanese guys in a kayak...the birth of 4 childs at once or the homecoming of a victorious underdog army that just survived the hardest war ever :)
you'll think of something
another quick tripod sketch
09-14-2005, 02:56 PM
Good luck man
09-14-2005, 02:58 PM

i got another one coming up in 12 secs :)
a little variation in texture this time
ok i just did a quick cut'n'paste job to line up the robots ... the basic idea stands now and my focus goes to composition
not sure yet about portrait or wide shot and how the crowd will be seen ... ill play around in the next days :)
09-15-2005, 01:34 AM
first of, love the designs of the robots. kick arse bro

09-15-2005, 08:04 AM
the saturated colours are working for me and the facial expressions are great.
me think so.love ur comp too.cheers.:bounce:
Great stuff vahn, I think you should go for the potrait as you can better show the scale of the big robots according to the small people. Haha, I love that the front left guy has really large rabbit teeths! Keep it up man, I can surely see that you have improved in you'r coloring and sense of composition.
09-15-2005, 11:31 AM

Hi VAhn, hey good colours and funny expressions on these characters. You're progressing well on that piece man! The global colour sketch is looking promissing, so keep up the nice work,
I will come back whenever I have free time (it's not that often these days...)
10-22-2005, 12:51 PM
These are looking great, Vahn! I especially like this last post more than any of the others. Just the overexuberance of the guy with the big mouth seels the piece, and I hope you can have others in a similar state of happiness.
It's good to see you back again. This piece feels so different from your last CGTalk Challenge entry. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. Good luck with it!
10-26-2005, 05:50 PM

10-27-2005, 07:30 AM

10-31-2005, 03:01 PM
hahaha, really cool mate, kukident guys could get envious about about that snowwhite grion with bite. ;) great expression, keep em coming!
Vertical comp 1
im trying to get this going again ... ist been resting for too long but ill really try :)
11-23-2005, 07:44 AM
I loved the different characters and I love it all composited. So just congratulations.
hehe thx :) i think i can work with this... ill just need to put in more people so you can see that it is a military victory parade ...
11-23-2005, 07:57 PM
u r doing just fine :) what concern the composition, I would suggest u to movce that girl on the left even more to the left and rotate it a bit into the right.. that how the robot in the back will be leaning to the left and the girl to the right, so u get a well balanced composition, where all other characters r put nicely in the middle, and the image is reading clearly.
ah nice idea  Ill try that tomorrow ... ty :D
11-23-2005, 10:23 PM
Yeah, i agree with Blaz about the composition and bring back some of the conffetti and maybe balloons. Really great expressions mate and the style is great as always
be back for more spamming
I tilted the girl and put another robot leg in the front of the background ... I think this works well
this is so cool..it's so   i'm drowning in my own drool here..cheeres:beer:
11-27-2005, 10:19 AM
Looking good. Very nice character design.
11-27-2005, 10:31 AM
Now you have to hurry a bit! Only week to go :wip:
I like the uplifting mood it has. Hope you create some tight areas as opposed to slight blurring technique youre using.
Good luck! :wavey:
OrO: lol ty! hoooraaaaay :D :D
mime_evermotion: cheers
Falcor: thx man..yeah sharpness/texture & depth is what i have to work on now... if i ever find time
just a little update ... the girl is sharper now + some minor details
11-29-2005, 05:05 PM
funny character style you got here. maybe it is a bit to light in the background.
What's with some more indicated buildings, just slightly like on the left.
The machine would become more 3 dimensional.
Greetings my compatriot and keep it up.
11-29-2005, 05:42 PM
Hey, Vahn, great image! Love the characters. This has a spontaneous snapshot feel to it . Keep em coming.
11-29-2005, 09:21 PM
Love your idea! for once there seems to be a bright future. Don´t think the colors should be any darker.
That old dude is supercool!
botho81: yeah youre right .. i want to define the bg more ..but ill leave that for last :D
zpapageo: thx man, your entry is better
Norberg: hehe thx
11-30-2005, 08:01 AM
cool work.i love the face of ur character.look realy awesome.:bounce:
find waldo :)
do you have any tips how i could move on ? i know i have to do some more balancing ... and overall sharpening ... but does the composition work ?
I i want to put in some more detail & texture and refine the whole left side of the pic ... but if any of you guys has a cool idea.... now is the time :D :arteest:
12-03-2005, 07:31 PM
Masking and the marquee tool always helps me clean the edges faster.
Some futuristic looking buildings would be cool, starting from the left side of your image then fading away to the back. Again, i would use the marquee tool to outline the shape and then paint bucket the main colour of the buildings. Then just paint the rest. You don't have to put a lot of details on the building since you already have a lot going on with your characters. I would also add two more robots that's fading back (in between the female and the guy on the right side) I would definately add some conffettis on your image also.
Other than that, some of the characters just need a tad bit more definitions. The style is definately working for me as always.
i hope this help a bit bro.
be back to see more and hopefully the final image :bounce: :wip:
12-03-2005, 11:04 PM
i think the compos now is realy cool.no need to chang comp.go sharpening or bluring some of your people and robot a bit to make better depth.and add some new cool-look buildings instead the old one like archie point.
and last one, personally i love the spacial effect and i think it would be great if you add some tiny red flags on the sky like the snow but not too much like that.I think it would make a better mood.just my opinion.keep going.cheers.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
hehe thx guys ... yeah the flying its and pieces will be back for sure. i just came home from work ..so ill see what i can do in the next few hours..... ill probably wont be able to finish this ( at least as i would like ) but im gonna submit whatever i have before i go to sleep :D
12-04-2005, 08:35 PM
I Like This So FAR Bro
ok.. i put in another robot and worked a little on the bg for a little depth
im gonna do some more sharpening and bg work when i get home again
banners and flags and flying stuff will be last :D
12-05-2005, 02:24 AM
dude, it's working. Keep going bro. I'll wait for the final image. you can make it :D
sry about the color differences .. but i havent made a color profile and i readjust it every jpg..but i think it will be more redish-blue like this here
almost done ... ill finish in 5 mminutes i hope
12-06-2005, 07:08 PM
Hey, looks good when it's sharper and with these brush strokes.
Not much time left. I finished the day before last. Puh
Good luck. Hope the judging doesn't take long.
Far far away in a distant land... there was a little country that had to go to war. It didnt have much troops and their military equipment was very old. Still they had no choice but to go and support the Kings army in the great war. But the little underdog army was lucky. There are no winners in war, but having survived with only a few losses, they felt like winners. Finally they returned home to their little country and moved into their capital. The people were happily cheering the homecoming soldiers with their red banners, with tears of joy, laughter and victory cries. It was truly a spectacular parade that day.
and the feast that evening .. i tell you.... mhhhhm but thats a different story :)
12-06-2005, 08:17 PM
Im glad you finished this, as said before i love your characters and the happiness in the image
