last year of high school as well, got tiny bit of things to do for the school as well.

I'll do this if I don't get bored on this (like what happened in two previous contests). Okay, I admit, my master&servant entry was plain bad and I dropped it. Space opera was a bit better, let's see what this is gonna be like.

Got so many cool ideas going on, can't wait to work on this one, good luck for everyone :scream:

Okay, my first attempt at catching some neat colors. Don't worry, the scene won't be so empty, this was just an attempt at colors. Details, and pretty much the idea of the pic will come later. Stay tuned.. or whatever..

here goes another idea, I had done lighting conditions like this before and thought I'd retry, buildings is the usual scifi-stuff, I had to just put in something. They'll probably change if I keep this concept.

Oh wow, lovely sense of depth and serenity. I adore the colours... I can just imagine the sort of detail you could work into this. Maybe, once you get to that scale, adding some teeny weeny birds flying would give an even better idea of how spectacular this view is.

Great start though, I'll be keeping an eye on this!

OH pretty.
It's a good painting. Not much that we havent seen before though.
I think you need a hook. Something that is a bit unexpected that will grab the viewer.
turn the image up sidedown, put a blimp under it and you are good to go!.

MAybe not that exact idea but something to take it to the next level.

Good luck.

KOryH - Don't worry, something spectacular's coming. I'm just making sure I like my scene before noodling in more stuff. Right now I'm totally recoloring the scene so.. I want to make sure I get my colors right etc. before deciding which spectacular idea to put there. Thanks for the heads up though, I usually get carried away with just doing city/landscapes..

Sorry about the small size of this one. I felt this doesn't read in bigger sizes (especially the explosion looks ridiculous.. and since it's in focus...) and in my opinion thumb gives a lot better idea of what the finish will be like.

Starting to have some action? It took me some Rammstein and Metallica to kick myself to mood of destruction . More to come :D

I think the composition is too symetrical... right side empty, left side fuzzy... and the explosion is perfectly in the middle of the building :curious:

Also for the mood try Linkin Park :buttrock:

bao
09-10-2005, 08:31 PM
the sunset one is amazing, very simple and moody, but the explosion one is much more dynamic. Both are still Spectacular!

ChrisThatGuy
09-10-2005, 08:52 PM
Cool, though the city might seem more vast if the composition was more panoramic.

R-K
09-10-2005, 09:11 PM
Chris - can't do very good panorama of this one because of the px size that was given.

Nomad - don't worry about the composition, I'm adding some gunships doing a hit run from the sunset after thinking of a decent design. Haven't got too much Linkin Park around but Moonsorrow might do the trick.. or maybe that's for desperate war scenes with swords and arrows..

Rest - thanks guys for comments!

09-10-2005, 09:16 PM
You've got a wonderful feel there, and great color scheme. I feel a little sense of loss for the details, though... there was such cool 'life' in the earlier sketches, someplace to wander and look around.

btw- about the pixel size... can't you go larger than what they state? I think you could do a panorama as long as the shortest side is at least the largest dimension they give. I agree that this kind of action would be very nice in a panoramic.

R-K
09-10-2005, 09:55 PM
hmm, maybe I'll boost this to panorama scene if you guys like it that way. Obviously if it's gonna be printed somewhere, it gets either resized or cropped, which is only a good thing because croppers usually have better sense of composition than I do.. :D

I'm trying to keep a lot of life to this one, I usually like my sketches better than finishes as well.

Very nice concept. To be honest I had similar idea in my "idea queue" but yours looks so much better :D Love the atmosphere witch u did here, thou u kinda kill it with insane amout of smoke. I would reduce it a lil so the background and the city would be more readable. Less smoke - more explosions :buttrock: And if it is a meteors shower (it is right?) I would consider darking upper parts of sky a little and add few "faling stars" there to show how massive it is and that escape is futile. And you have to go for panorame :applause:

Gonna watch you cuz my minds eye can see how spectacular it may become

okay I'm definitely gonna do a panorama. Don't worry about the smoke, this scene will be revealed a lot more to the end. Also due the small pic, every little detail of bg just disappears.

Hi Ranath,

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for your comment on my sketch. BTW, your sketches are simply beautiful. Your last sketch, although small, still amazes me. I know you said you feel it lacks impact, I think you should post a higher res version. After all, we are still the conceptualisation/sketching stages so we can get away with a few goof ups here and there:)

so I made it wider and painted in a lot of stuff. Problem was composition, the explosing building went into middle and I can't move it easily because it's split into 20 layers or so and layers contain other stuff also and it's poison to move it. I'll avoid it if I can, which I can't.

Anyway this should give you some idea of where this thing is going. Those weird missile thingys in foreground will hopefully be fixed later.

umbrellasky
09-13-2005, 06:48 PM

agent bone
09-13-2005, 06:50 PM
It is looking beautiful. Glad you noticed the building in the middle, I was going to make a suggestion regarding it. I think it would so much stronger if you can just shift it off center just a hair. Best of luck

jbballaran
09-13-2005, 07:27 PM
Yep. The building divides the picture into two, making it seem like two different things in different worlds are happening in the scene. What's the ship coming from the foreground doing? I cant tell whether its a civilian vehicle thats about to fly off the ramp or if it's part of the attacking ships. It cant be one of the attackers coz it looks like he might get hit by one of the missiles, but it looks like one of those attacking ships.

Raine,

Wow... talk about dramatic scene! Im loving those warm colors contrasted by the grayish blues. The overall image just screams intensity. Awesome.

andreasrocha
09-14-2005, 12:51 AM
Great work, dude. However, like you pointed out, you seem to have a bit of compositional problems. The left third of the image has almost no weight compared to the other two. The thin building near the center almost "cuts" this third out of the image. You also have a conflict with the two explosions which are almost the same intensity. One is in the center of the image and other is almost on the edge of the frame, both positions that do not favor composition. Try to make one of the explosions bigger than the other, divide your image into thirds and place the bigger explosion one of the those "thirds" gridlines. Also, the trails look really cool, but they are leading the viewer out of the picture, instead of in.

Don't get me wrong, I think this pic is looking quite nice, but the composition is not helping at the moment. I hope I was of some help.

09-14-2005, 04:17 AM
Holy! More Sci Fi action, woohoo! This piece is looking awesome; great lighting and perspective. I have a suggestion, though, to make this piece more 'spectacular'. It seems to me that this is a battle over the city skyline, why not add a massive fleet in skies above with huge mothership in the middle of it hovering over the city. Also, I think having something in the foreground would make the composition better. Maybe a sentry looking over the skyline will do. Anyway thats my two-cents. Keep up the good work and best of luck!

JJNaas
09-14-2005, 07:35 AM
Very impressive and dramatic! Great colours! :) I'd only complain about the composition, like the previous posters. The composition looks so busy, that you don't know which part of the pic to look at first.. Even tho the pic can have lot's of stuff happening in it, I'd wish for one main event that stands out from the other events.. something HUGE to draw the immediate attention.

09-14-2005, 02:37 PM
andreasrocha - I agree. I just had to do something with the pic, but I'm gonna bring the explosion from right edge to other side of tall.. things and move the middle building somewhere. I was toying with idea that I'd put something to horizon back there so that the eye would travel to right, then center and left but that won't happen with new tweaks with buildings. Also I'm going to get rid of much of that smoke so hopefully that will kill the divided feeling of this one and will help composition as well (there will be less contrast in the middle then.

tAsty BITs - won't be close up ships, they'd cover too much of the image and I think I have enough going on already here.

wraithdt - no fleets, can't squeeze in anything like that. There's just no space for it.

JJ Naas - yeah, it's busy. That's caused by composition.

Fiolka Alexandre - maybe you didn't notice but this is flipped, not the same as earlier ones. I flip my paintings all the time and this one just happened to come this way to screen.

Rest - thanks!

to see much more detail when i click it to see the bigger version , heh

hey u tried any wintery frosty stuff? Some huge battle machine , frozen
in cold, just outside the city it was meant to conquer.. maybe it ran out of gas..
maybe the cold got it and then its crew, or maybe the crew went first..

thanks for comments guys.

The new concept does work in my head. It is by far more spectacular than my battle scene - obviously you guys can't see what the scene looks in my mind, but at least it's not hanging between a couple of cheap explosions and cool lighting effects.

I do hate my battle painting. As far as the painting technique goes, it's okay, but the idea sucks. There's no real emotion in it either. It's so general, so much of something I'd expect everyone to do. I don't feel there's anything unique in it, and I don't want to paint any everyday crap that counts on "coolness" -factory into this contest.

Another reason why I hate my explosion painting is the way it got me carried away from something I always loved in painting - simpleness, composition, mood and beauty. And it made me forget all storytelling etc. hundred percently and made me to change it to explosions, I so much hate myself for doing that. Like I said, the pic stands and falls with those explosions, if you take a look at this thread before and after first explosion, you'll see the difference. Common people just love eyecandy (I'm one of them, but I want to avoid it in my own pics), but I'm not gonna count on that the judges would be so easily fooled as well. I do believe the idea behind the winning painting of this contest must hold a spectacular idea as well, not just cool effects.

I do want to believe that an image that has it's focus on beauty (not saying my sketch was good in it tho) can be spectacular, not just paintings that have super 1337 battle action in them.

Hi Raine,

your environment sketches are beautiful. They convey an impressive mood and the depth + color palette fit perfectly. Congrats.

Regarding the theme the spectacular feel is missing a bit in the last two sketches but the content of the images give enough room to add more of it.

:) "Launch" is what my next concept's called - looks like you beat me to a title :) This sketch looks great and the detail gives a good impression of scale. The only problem is that I find it more relaxing than spectacular or awe-inspiring. Maybe extending the canvas 100% or so upwards to show a huge galaxy and planets..?

The only problem is that I find it more relaxing than spectacular or awe-inspiring. Maybe extending the canvas 100% or so upwards to show a huge galaxy and planets..?

why couldn't relaxing be spectacular? I have seen too many people taking what we might call "action" -route to this challenge, meaning they have as much action in their images as possible. Usually it is combined with somehow negative feelings, sorrow, hate, anger etc. I did that as well and bored myself with that.

One poster kindly compared my style to Gary Tonge's style. I find his works incredibly spectacular, yet relaxing. Of course there's a huge gap between his skills and mine, but I'm definately striving for something else than action here

the guidelines said: "one of those iconic spectacular images that grasps viewers by the throat; that quickens the pulse; that excites and scares at the same time."

Maybe my entry doesn't meet exactly that, but the inspiration section of this contest said:

"but it's a rare talent that can create something that is totally believable and totally fantastic at the same time. You don't want to go too far or you will break believability - people will just say "it's a computer fake". You need to sell the image as something so "real" but fantastic that people want to believe it. Their pulse will rise just looking at it as they say "no... that cant be? - that really happened? ... wow... that's awesome!""

I think my entry can meet that.

And last guidelines says this: "You could detail the precise patterns on a peacock's tail, the fine petals on a rose, or the soft shades in a sunset."

No action, not breathtaking - yet definately spectacular.

"one of those iconic spectacular images that grasps viewers by the throat; that quickens the pulse

And there is my point :) By definition, a relaxing image slows the pulse, yet the brief of the challenge says that it must quicken the pulse, as you correctly quoted. You misinterpret my words when you ask, Why does it have to be action-packed. It doesn't, of course. A landscape can indeed be spectacular. What I'm saying is that this landscape, beautiful and well-executed as may be, isn't spectacular in my eyes. Spectacular would make me gasp, this doesn't. Other than the buildings and the rings, the landscape is pretty standard. Naturally, if you don't agree then that's fine, and maybe the judges wouldn't agree either, but you can't argue with the fact I don't find it spectacular :D

Just ask youself that question ranath and that will determine if what you are doing is spectacular, If so then run with it if not make changes necessary to bring the "damn are you 4real?!", out of a piece. Remember you are trying to impress the rest of us! I think it is a spectacular sketch so far, now push it to the limits! Holla!

Beautiful sketches! Regarding the last sketch... beautiful mood and nice ideas with the rings. Relaxing can be spectacular, but I think the picture would be more spectacular if you would show the scene from a bit more dramatic view and you could do more out of that rings. hmmm just an idea... imagine if you would move the camera to the left and keep the target on the main building until the sun is behind that. A nice contrast between the dark architectural forms and the bright background would be visible. .... move the 2 bright points together to create a center of the picture and with the rings you would show how huge the scene is. And maybe rotate the camera a bit upward to show where the rocket will go. The foreground looks to me like an old wood that was burned down ... (sorry for that bad english:D ) Maybe it would look more spectacular if the camera would be inside that branches. .... so this were just some ideas... maybe you can use one of them somehow:D Good luck!

What say you if I changed the canvas ratio to portrait ratio? so that I'd push the rocket way higher? It wouldn't look so much as a movie storyboard then.. Also I might be sharing some cool sketches soon to illustrate my storyline a bit incase I get bored with this pic.

Idea behind this is to make this piece more unique thus spectacular pic, instead of making it like a movie storyboard or something. I do like the landscape ratio version I have, but just testing this as well.

I see that you're having same kind of problems, that I am. You keep changing your picture, even though it already looks good. To me, it happens when I get bored to it. Then I try to make it look some thing else, some thing better. But the thing is that every time I keep changing it, it gets only worse.
In your case, they both actually work, but some why I liked the previous one better.

If I correctly understand you, you try to show grandiose scale of a stage but while all seems to me looks toy. And I would increase explosion during start of a rocket. When the rocket is already on such distance from the ground, explosion should be much more, if it certainly not any new technology. And the stage can be painted by colors of explosion, for example red

R-K
09-29-2005, 01:41 PM
thanks Sergey for insightful comments.

The launching fumes were too small to the new pic, I agree, because I just increased the size and did a composition study. The amount of fumes wouldn't alter the composition much so I didn't bother correcting it cos I wanted to be quick. Anyway, I might make the explosion bigger even in the wide version, I'm hoping to give it some dynamic movement so the rocket would look like it's moving very fast but to be somehow fragile and dreamlike as well.

I'll probably stick to wide version since you guys seem to prefer it.. and it seems to have less things to be fixed.

very good work again...and i can't quite catch what you are affraid from...i think that the best result in the competition would be a picture witch can narrate itself, and this narration don't need to be the great deal plot, it just have to possess some expressive elements...and i think it's not of necessity to express any second though, witch can only be seen in detailed view by reconsidering of the concept...think about that, and have fun. Btw you hvev very nice style of expression.

Hey Raine,

In my opinion the current one looks stronger than the previous one. to me it conveys the dramatic feel much more. The vertical arrangement fits much better to this topic. But the image size tends to go to a quadratic. Maybe it could be good to give it a clear vertikal format.

The colors and the atmosphere are great as allways.

Ranath if youre having problems with choosing a concept why dont you just flip a coin and do the one it indicates to perfection. No point surfing through concepts unless they are extremely superior to previous concept. Its just a waste of time that way.

Ok so back to this art piece :)

I like how that reddish fire is capturing my view. Makes a cool point of action in it.

One thing i like about the previous art. Is that you can see the underbelly of the spaceship.
Makes it larger and the orientation is more interesting.

Maybe do one spaceship with its underbelly showing in front of this building. And try to use those light beams as a way to introduce more spacecrafts in the picture.

Ok ok.. my advices are totally worthless. It is really up to you
Good luck man! . Keep up with the finnish rep :buttrock:

thanks guys, I think this will be the one as I don't have time to change anymore.

I just wanted to get rid of that big light bulb up there and put the smaller ship up there as a placeholder cos I didn't have time to put anything else up there (and it was necessary for the composition to have something there).

Yea you see a combination of stock textures on left corner. I'm sorry about that, I needed a placeholder. It will NOT stay that way :P I'm gonna actually paint some rocks there if I can. If I can't, I'll get rid of the whole thing probably.

Anyways, been working on this A LOT, listening to Rammstein - Benzin + lots of MOONSORROW.

This is looking really good, raine. I love the dark ominous feel. Im not sure what the black structure is, but that's allright. It's like a first glimpse at something strange.

so this is my "line art". Now, drawing lines and stuff is not part of my painting process. However someone wants it, and I thought whatever, let's give something. I decided to put a collection of sketches that resulted to what I have now, that's pretty much the same canvas I've been painting to all the time.

So here it is, be sure to notice the little arrow-style _lines_ between the pics - that makes it "line art" :D

This is a post action image. While people usually aimed for the moment of highest peak of action in their image, I decided to do something else.

The dark building is a base of space miners that had landed to a distant, cold planet in the outer rim. They had thought the planet to be desolate, but they were wrong. And they chose the wrong mountain to search minerals from - now they had to face the wrath of the ancient people who still lingered in the caves of their sacred mountains...

This took a long time. I had a lot of fun making it, and learned a lot. Meybe I listened too much of Moonsorrow (as you can see from the description), but oh well. Good luck everyone in the contest.

thanks all, Sergey - unfortunately not! I paint this on 12,5%-25% view, so closeups would be super messy! I hope the judges don't zoom in!
