Hey all.

The time has come to take the plunge, so to speak. Here's a couple of concepts.

I like the idea of someone getting more than they bargained for. It's the kind of ironic surprise that, at least in my lexicon, defines a true spectacle. Hence, a fisherman catches a sea monster and a couple of thrill-seeking bird-watchers come across a phoenix, or fire bird.

Even though I am well aware that phoenixes (phoeni?) don't actually have any young, I am leaning towards the second. The first is a little more cliche, and besides, the phrase "thrill-seeking bird watchers" has a comic irony in and of itself. I intend to rework the composition a bit if I use it, but its a start.

Thoughts and crits welcome. Fire away!

NOOB!

Wow, I really, really hope this exercise improves my digital painting. If my final image is as good as some of the sketches I've seen, I'll be stoked.

Regardless, this is my rough sketch of the concept I think I'm going with. It's kind of a post-apocalyptic sort of battle, i.e. Mad Max style, but rather than rely on vehicles, man has resorted to riding on various mutant flying creatures (or aliens- who knows where the heck this is?) Clans live inside great fortresses built on the backs of giant tortoises, launching scouting flights and assaults from the safety of their mobile castles. In the vast deserts near the equator, where water is the most precious resource available, the battle for an oasis can get pretty intense. Or dare I say... spectacular.

This is a very rough (30 mins) concept to get the idea down, but I do really like the idea a lot. I'm going to do some design work for the fighters and tortoise-forts (a fortoise, perhaps?) next. While I want all C&C, I'd appreciate critique on composition and "camera angle" most at this point- I want a dramatic shot that really pits fortoise vs fortoise in a challenge for that precious H-2-O.
