Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has come across some sort of digital mannequin that could maybe be posed in the computer. Something along the lines of a plugin for photoshop or painter maybe? I realize that this may be done in poser or any other 3d app once the model has been built, but I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is an easier way than modeling and rigging a 3d model yourself.

Thanks.

yup, that would really be very helpful...

Koolmoves is a bones-based animation helper, meant for something like Flash animations. It's not great, but may be interesting to look at (google it).

I think there are some mannequin models for Poser you can purchase - as you said, you'd have to do the rigging, but there might be simplified models with fewer joints, etc. I recently went looking for something like this, but didn't have any luck for the figures I wanted. Haven't checked for human forms.

Are you sure that koolmoves is a "bones-based animation helper"
I just checked out there site, and couldn't find where it mentioned that.
I'd love somethin like that though.

Yeah, I was a bit general there...

better response: Koolmoves lets you add 'bones' to help with character animation. However, the bones are just 2D linkage devices that essentially set isotropic lines on the surface points around them. They are not based on any real kinematics, so don't do rotations, limits, etc. They are essentially a nice way to select all the local points and move them at once.

Having said that, I did a little experimentation and found Koolmoves to be a fun, somewhat easier way to pose rough sketches and animations. More skilled people will obviously find better uses ;)

Same for a app called Moho ( i think, my teacher mentioned it the other day ) I't lets you use bones on 2d to do charachter animation.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at Koolmoves but it really isnt along the lines of what I was looking for. I was looking for a digital mannequin more to use as reference for drawing human anatomy in painter and photoshop. Having a plugin for either of these 2 applications would be great because then i could pose the mannequin and then draw what I see. Anyone else happen to come across anything along these lines?

Sounds like Poser is what you are looking for. From what I've heard artist refrence was one of the original intended purposes of the software. You don't have to model and rig your own character in poser - it comes with pre built models ready to go. You can easily modify their body type etc, and pose them however you want. You can render the pose and then throw it into photoshop or whatever.

If I understand your question correctly, try Expression-3 acquired by Microsoft for further development, current in Beta and its free.

You can asign a bitmap to a path/ bone and manipulate the path with any number of points, in short its a hybrid between Photoshop and Painter or Vector/bitmap.

Thanks, I guess poser is the way I gotta go. All I'm really looking to do is get some kind of art reference for poses that I want. I apreciate it. Oh, and expression sounds kind of interesting.

poser is what you want and there should always be a free version of an older version of painter floating around on magazine disk suck as 3d world ect

I use Poser quite often as a manniquin. Very useful. I think you can also use DAZstudio which is a free software
