Rebeccak 09-24-2005, 02:14 PM Arctis,
ROFL, for one thing, because of your avatar, I thought you might be African, so I was picturing a thin African / French intellectual dude with a turtleneck and glasses, lol! :) These guesses are of course never accurate. :) How lucky you are to live so near the Eiffel tower! There was this funny story that ran here a long time ago (who knows if it's true) about a really old woman who had an apartment in Paris. Because so many people want to live there, there was a guy who badly wanted her apartment and wanted her to basically die...but she lived into her 100's :scream: lol, so the guy was out of luck. This is probably internet urban myth/legend, but it's still pretty funny. :)
Cheers, :)

Wow, of course the avatar ! But why thin and intellectual ? :)
About that story, well reality is more unbelievable : a few years ago, the France oldest woman died at 130 year old (or 125...). her son was dead for long time, and probably the son / daughter of her son too !!! She had a house in "viager", which means that she sold it to a buyer, who allowed her to live in, then was supposed to be the new owner after her death. Poor man... he probably died 50 year before !

Arctis,
Good lord, 125+ years old? What's in the water she was drinking over there? :scream: That is hilarious, and it's nice to get an urban myth confirmed! Good lord, I thought the woman only lived to be 103, lol! :scream:
Hmm, why thin and intellectual...well, most likely due to the avatar, but also to your pieces, which take more than a little brains to produce  :D :applause:. Though technically it's not my favorite piece of yours, the embryo cover (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=270220&page=2&pp=15&highlight=Arctis) is really nice and requires a lot of thought to produce. My favorite pieces of yours are those like you have linked in your signature, like the WIP piece (The Class of Master Geb (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=258901)), which I think is great. These pieces are very imaginative, and remind me a bit of the Dark Crystal, and other elaborate fantasy works which aren't just frou frou ~ I'm wondering, what is the inspiration / motivation behind these pieces? :) This is 'post~a~picture turned interview', lol! :D :)
Cheers,

103, a urban legend ? ha ha ha, nooo, 130, please ! ;)
she 's never been ill in her whole life... impressive !
About my inspiration, there's africa, of course, an influence we don't see much around here. Actually, when I posted some illustrations on a african tale at CA.org, almost nobody came and see until I remove the word "africa" from the title :/
Apart from the first pict (of the man doubting), which was plugged on the front page almost by accident ( I was making a mistake, and a mod wrote me the good process, then remarked my work ), my other paintings had not much success compared to some realistic, or fantasy stuff on the forum.
Sometimes I try to understand why, since I've got the feeling I do the same kind of SF / imaginary art than everybody around here... And africa's influence is not that obvious. And nobody wrote me the big technical crits that would make me understand what a bad painter I am, and what I should do to get better ;) :)

Arctis,
Hmm, it's really too bad your work has not received more notice...don't know why that is really, as everything I've seen from you is of professional quality, and very unique due to its African influence, which I find refreshing to see. :) I think a lot of people like to do fairies and such, which is fine, but I like when people push beyond the typical fantasy genres and create something interesting of their own ~ that's why your work stood out to me, because it looked like no one else's ~ which is definitely a positive!
I think there is a big social aspect to whose work gets commented on, as well, at least on the WIP Forum here. This is not a bad thing at all ~ quite the contrary, one of the big reasons I love the WIP Forum is because there are people who return everyday and who have formed friendships with others through commenting on each other's work. Typically, the more you comment on someone else's work, the more comments and crits you will receive in return. There is such a high turnover rate in the main WIP Forum, that it is easy to have your work overlooked if you are not actively posting in other peoples' threads, with a link back to your own work. :)
Your work is fantastic, and I hope you get the notice you deserve...I'm curious to know how much work you do for personal reasons, and how much for professional? I can really see your doing a whole fantasy book based on your characters...they are really unique, and seem to have a life of their own. :)
Cheers, :)

Thanx for the feedback, Rebecca.
About the social aspect, I agree, but I guess beeing in the "mainstream" do help a lot, though it's quite hard to define that "mainstream"...
About professionnal quality, it's also hard to recognize it, since people who make a living with art can produce work of a very various quality, from weak to outstanding... Arr, life 's so hard to understand sometimes ...
I don't mind about having less success than another artist, if I have the explanation (s). That' what's most important to me : understand what's happening. ;) You helped me, thanx again.
All these works were made on a "professionnal" purpose, while I was trying to get published. and I have a whole fantasy book in mind, but I don't feel confident enough to realize it for the moment. But the day will come...........

Arctis - hey there, I like your work. I have to wonder why I havent seen it before, but I browsed though it today. It is original and pleasing to the eye. Nice concepts, colours and textures. You re good
My cousin Santa, she is twenty, once told me, I dont get your art. Or the art that you show me, for lets say having a couple - a girl and a guy - sohuld be romantic, nice and fluffy, all I sees on the web these days, is a couple near a huge explosion or some wreck, all dark and gloomy. :P I told her, I think it s pretty, she just shrugged her shoulders and said, "well people have tastes, I like colourful and cheerful stuff" :D
The world and people - totaly weird and crazy.
Ok I m prattling, never mind me ;)

Arctis,
You do beautiful work, and I think I understand what you mean about not necessarily being in the 'mainstream'. Sometimes I think you have to 'stick to your guns' as they say, or keep doing what you believe in, even if life doesn't always immediately reward you for it. Who knew that after many, many years of doing master copies from books and basically stuffing / hiding them under my couch that I would now be moderating a forum and receiving recognition for work which I didn't think people would care about?
I believe the fact that I've focused since my art school days on something not that popular or interesting to most people has defined me as being unique. This didn't mean much until recently, but I guess my point is, had I not focused on my specific interests, I would not have stood out. (I'm not being egotistical at all here ~ I never expected ever to receive the kind of attention and recognition I have since coming to CGTalk ~ this was beyond my imagination or expectation for sure).
They used to tell us in school, 'Do what you love, the money will follow'. Now, I used to think this sounded New Agey, but it is kind of true. Of course, what that phrase is missing is the last bit, so the entire phrase should be, 'Do what you love, the money will follow...a LOT later'. :scream:
You have to do what you love, I think, because you have no choice. Otherwise, you are trying to follow something in which you do not believe, and you are like a ship without a rudder. We are lucky in this day and age to have forums where we can share our common interests ~ and not be so isolated like artists of the past. I don't think you should change what you are doing because you are not receiving as much attention as 'mainstream' artists. I was just looking at the art of Camille Kuo (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=268364) and I would not consider her work 'mainstream' ~ but I love it because of that. Don't change to suit the market unless you absolutely must. It would be a shame to see you change styles, since your style is such a great one.
Cheers! :)

I agree with you Fooxoo : that's why people's reaction are so interesting (when you got the explanation)
A friend of mine told me my aliens paintings disgusted him quite violently... I liked this emotionnal reaction, very interesting.

Magic Goro formulas like 'Alacazam! You're an awesome painter!' :scream: ~Sppppeeeeeeakkkkkkking of which...when may we expect an awesome kick a** Goro tutorial, hmmmm??? All the cool kids are doing it! So you didn't see my tuts yet?
Well I did some of those...and they are on my website too :D www.area-56.de
I have also a bunch of photoshop brushes available for download.
I'm also relatively new to the digital painting and using colors and stuff. So not many secrets ;) maybe...hmm to have faith in using colors...to have faith in doing something new...aaand practicing from life or photo refs to get used to the behaviour of light and colors...
So I expect some speedpaintings Ms. Kimmel :D

Goro,
Dang, I missed seeing your tutorials on your website ~ thanks for pointing those out! Being such a rapid poster, you occasionally miss the details...:D
I do want to participate in the Speedpainting thread ~ you guys kick butt and it looks like loads of fun...but I think the CGWorkshop will keep me fairly occupied for the next few months, soooo...I will prolly have to wait til December before I can dive in. Looking forward to it, tho, as it seems a great way to practice and learn quickly...I am still so darn slow and picky, it would really probably help me out...so thanks for the invite. :)
I completely disagree about my drawings being 'better' than your paintings, however...I highly admire the skill you hard core concept designers have with expressing an idea beautifully, economically, and quickly...I enjoy laboring in the Renaissance fields too much, lol! Each to his/her own...but we all need to learn new things. :)
It's very inspiring to see the diversity of work here at CGTalk...it's a bit like a watering hole in the desert, lol! All types coming together, the result of which is a fantastic display of talent. My socks are knocked off every day. It's fun. :)
Cheers, :)

Ines,
How ironic that after all this time knowing you, I only now get to see your world travels pictures via internet! :scream: Such is the digital age, lol. :)
These are great pics! Was this right before you had that nasty gangrene incident and had to have both feet removed? How tragic that you now have to get about on a tiny yellow skateboard! Sometimes, when I see you scooting along the sidewalk, I almost feel like stopping to give you a ride, and then I think, 'nah'. :scream: *crying tears of laughter now* You know I love ya, babe. Thanks for posting these great pics! ;) :scream:
Say hello to the myth that is 'David', lol. :scream:

Now that we're on the subject of models.
I used to be one, now this picture was taken on Holiday, Its NOT one of my pro pic's.. I'll see if I can dig one of thous up :) but it was taken at the peak of my short modeling career, thou the lighting sucks and the photographer wasn't any good (you know I don't really mean that mum * cough cough * ) you can surely see my experience by the graceful way I pose in front of the camera. :P
but no matter how talented I may have been at the time the modeling biz is cruel and vain and as soon as I showed the slightest sign of age (meaning I turned three) I was no longer good enough for them.
One can do nothing but envy the young *sigh*.

These are great pictures, and of much better quality than the previous ones. :) Do you have any that are hi~res? I would like to have images that are 300 dpi so that people may print them if they so choose. The first and last pictures which you just posted, particularly the last, are perfect for what I am looking for, so long as they are hi~res. I have folks lined up for the next 3 OFDWs, so if you had hi~res pics, they wouldn't be used for about 8 weeks, but I really am interested in having a variety of models, and so would appreciate your contribution.
Feel free to post links to hi~res pictures here, and then we can go from there. Thanks for posting these! Why must everyone here be ripped or a model? *shakes fist at sky* :scream:

Man it is funny how many of us have the Big Spidey toy. I was with my little 2 1/2 year old boy in the toy store when he saw it and begged for it. So I looked over at my wife and said "Can we both have one...PLEASE!!" She thought I was kidding. A few minutes later we were walking out, Logan and I with matching grins, each holding our priced Spidey and my wife was just shaking her head at us (mostly me.)
Great photos everyone. I haven't checked this thread in awhile and I am shocked to see how many in shape people there are here. Makes me a little embarrassed to have posted my picts. Oh Well.

Rebecca - Forget Boxx. Build your own (http://www.sheff.com/portfolio/displayimage.php?album=35&pos=0). It's not that hard and it will be a lot cheaper. All you will need is a screwdriver and some tweezers if you have big hands. Remember the plastic box (http://www.sheff.com/portfolio/displayimage.php?album=28&pos=0) from nature of materials?
Kyle - What got me started in art was when I was 5 I wanted a Spidey shirt and my Dad didn't know where to get me one so he made me one. He drew Spidey on a little white t-shirt for me and painted it. That was probably the most influential thing that made me become an artist.
For his 70th birthday, I made one for him with an airbrush. I wish I had a picture of it.
Edit: Forgot to post a picture of myself. This was back when I was thinner.

SHEFF,
Hey, I recognize your photo from when you dancing in Vegas. Was this when you and Alison were starting to date. Dawn thinks she remembers the photo.
Speaking of the whole "Build Your Own Computer" thing you mentioned to Rebecca, You really should post those pictures of the "Hell Raiser Cube" computer that you got those awards for. It is still one of the coolest designs I have seen someone do. Speaking of building your own computer, How is the new powerhouse you put together recently??? If I ever decide to go away from my precious Macs, I will commision you to build me one of your super computers. I still have never talked to anyone who builds them as good as you. But until then, I am happy with my little G4. I don't do enough to warrant a bigger machine.

As far as I know about where to find the Spidey figure, probably eBay now since they are about a year old (they came out with Spider-man 2.) The figure is great reference for unusual poses and view points. It was advertised as having something like 64 points of articulation.
And just so you know, I am closer to 8 now. Well, at least 7 1/2. :D :scream: :)

Rebecca - Phil Hayes! Did you really think I was that old? At least you didn't picture me as Jon Conrad. I'm Filipino, but I'm a little more round now. My wife is too since she's expecting and I've gained some poundage over the years along with this sympathy weight, I'm huge.
I'm not a smoker, but the avatar is a self-portrait of sorts. I was born in the year of the monkey and I'm a sagittarius, hence the quiver full of pencils.
Some old skinny pictures.

My goal is just to remain small enough that if I were overcome by fumes, Dawn could drag me out of a burning building or at least push me out of the nearest window. Eventually I'll shed these pounds, but first I have to fix my treadmill.
Kyle - I did put the link to the Hellraiser Cube up in that last post. It's the one marked, "plastic box". Yes this was from the dancing days.

@Goro - LOL! The phonetics of all Asian pictograph languages totally screws me up sometimes, (I speak a little Mandarin due to Liang being Chinese.) Her mother is a translator for the Chinese government to Japan, and she told Liang what they were called in Pinyin and then Liang phoneticised them into English for me. I was only a little bit out with my spelling  .

I'm still waiting on vasari oil paint and innerglow panels for the McGraw class.

pixelcolada - :scream: Oh I remember carrying my daughter in one of these around. I played petanque (this french game with the metal balls) with her wrapped around my belly and I celebrated the last time BvB 09 Dortmund won the German Bundeliga (Soccer League) with a bottle of beer at my lips and my little one sleeping below my chin.

Hi Sheff,
nice setup you've got.
I'd like your opinion since I see you use a triple display setup in portrait mode.
Is it two 21'ers and a 17'er? or two 24' and a 20' ?
How does the pc respond with this res setup? ( I'm asking, 'cause I've heard that dual portrait mode is converted by software and not genericly supported by the vga hardware, so there is a lag) is it so?
Do you find it convenient as an interface?
I mostly work on heads and portraits so that setup would seem ideal for me but haven't got to try it yet...
TIA

Hi Evan,
I have one 24 and two 20's. I'm on a PC that I built that has 2 Nvidia cards with dual DVI, but SLI is not enabled.
The 24 and the 20 on the right are vertical. The other 20 on the left is horizontal. The reason being, is that I play gnomon videos or movie DVD's on my left and work on the 2 monitors on the right.
The only awkward thing is getting your wacom tablet to function with this setup. It does work but the mapping is sometimes off or funky.
I do like it this way. There are some software titles that don't work well with 3 monitors and a tablet. Most of the software I use have no problems. The cost of the 3 Dell screens was about $2000, but you can get it cheaper than that.
I don't play too many games, but I find that they have problems with the screens in vertical. Some won't start.
Actually the most handy tool is the nostromo n52 which is under my left hand. I have all my quick keys set to it so that regardless of what app I am using, the quick keys will function the same.
Hope this helps.

heheheheh... great to see this thread going again.. I see Goro still has Rebecca by the hair.. *grin* And Rebecca.. I have discovered your subterfuge.. you say you swam, but anyone with legs like those couldn't possibly swim that far!!
So what the heck, I'll join the fray...
Here's the hub of my creative world... otherwise known as a tip, collected about my near 5 yr old imac soon to be replaced with a shiny G5 and a screen bigger than 15". How heavenly! Say.. this is a like a little snapshot of my life... I should paint this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/xephyri/myroom.jpg
And me... I should point out that yes, those are dog slippers... when you visit bavaria in february and the family you stay with have no carpets and you have no slippers, anything is good. And there is judicious use of flattering lighting and possibly a touch of soft focusing being used in the glamourpuss shot.
