View Full Version : XSI or 3D ?
Hi guys, I really need some help here.I recieved the demo (Experience CD) and I must say this is one heck of a program, but I dont need half of the features it offers.Would I be better off with the 3D version? I am not an animator.I do illustrations and stills for marketing.Which program suites me best?I also need the program to be able to produce volumetric lighting.(ocasionally I do landscapes too.)
XSI or SoftImage 3D ?
thanx for the help:shrug:

If your limiting yourself to just those two apps I would say XSI but why just soft... ummm... software?
Try them all. Buy the latest 3dworld and check the 3dsmax5 demo. It's full on for 30 days. Maya has the PLE (watermarked to hell). LW has there discovery edition (limited to a maximum number of points, not sure how many though). I believe maxon has a demo also.
Try them all before you drop the coin. I guarantee you'll connect with at least one of them. Then get that one :)
serious tho... I think XSI AND 3d are wayyy overkill for an illustrator. You can get some great stuff out of wayy cheaper packages.

Thanks
perhaps overkill perhaps maybe even less appropriate as it doesn't offer some things cheaper packages offer that illustrators/graphic designers look for in a 3d app in a more familiar way, but many design houses use high end 3D apps for the added features and control, the attik etc.
both xsi and 3d do volumic lighting but xsis render tree offers a lot more control and features beyond volumic that may be of interest such as different toon options but is a lot more $. also the integrated compositor that xsi includes adds some artistic effects value eg: textures for surfaces and volumic light proj can be sent through the FX tree.
Thats exactly what I was looking for.As for the rest of the responses, thanx a million, very valuble info indeed.

Does anyone know Softimage's strategy at offering both packages?
Would they not be better combining the best of both as they already have different versions of XSI for different needs/levels?

Alan.

XSI, faster render and less buggy.
But if you are concerning about $$, 3D still able to give you everything.

they need to support and continue with 3D and develop it for users whos pipeline and tools still require it until they switch to another app, many haven't yet or are in the process. 3D is also a product marketable to another $ level.
