I've started with a couple of graphite drawings of an angel and a fighter jet. I'm now thinking that I'll put the confrontation in the sky -but I'm first getting comfortable drawing the angel and jet.

Well, the drawings look nice, but I'm curious to see what this confrontation is going to be, now that you've mentioned it.

I'm not sure why, but there is something about the sketch with the bright light on the angel and the silhouette of the plane.. there's some much deeper meaning in it for me I guess, the confrontation between man's technological and scientific advances and our very souls and their protectors. Really made the hairs on my neck stand on end. It helps, of course, that your pencil work is nothing short of brilliant.

I can't offer any crit at this moment in time, as I'm quite blown away with what you have here. I can't wait to see how you progress.

I posted a sincere thank you to everyone who has written such positive comments.
In particular, Zepyhri articulated (beautifully) what this image means to me. Alas, the post didn't appeared for some reason. Anyway, I genuinely appreciate your encouraging words.

Though, I looked at many Internet images of jet fighters, I couldn't find the image and angle that I have in my mind. I think my solution will be to buy a plastic model kit that I can position (after I glue it together). -never done this before.

I'm now working on the line drawings.

the drawings are awsome, I like the idea, but I think it's to static, think some action would help, love the light on that,
good luck, :)

Great ability to bring out some atmosphere with pencils. I like the third sketch the most.

But maybe the angel should be flying on the sky.. or just above ground level. So it would seem it is a real angel. Not just an madman walking around in angel clothes trying to crash the plane.

great job and idea! basically I agree with what zepyhri (and the rest of people) said...

I'm not sure about making it in the sky though, I like it being in the ground because, well, in the sky the plane has to be moving fast and IMHO it could break this 'peaceful contrast' look...

Your sketches are awesome, I'll be looking forward to it...

Here is my first sketch of the overall composition. I'm now thinking that I will reverse the vertical placement of the jet fighter (F-16) and the angel (placing the F-16 high in the image and the angel below).

Here is a sketch of the angel. My first few sketches had a male figure with an upraised sword.

I was hoping I would be further along, but this is where I'm at now. Lots and lots yet to do, but this is the basic composition I'm going with.

It's looking good, although the angel is a little hard to read. It may need to be bigger. It would also be cool if it were in some kind of defensive pose.

Nice work so far.

To be honest, I've hesitated working on this image because I really didn't know how to proceed. I'm not even close to the same comfort level that I have with 'traditional' drawing or painting.

After played around (alot) with different techniques, brush settings, opacity, etc. -I feel it's now starting to gain some traction. I've tried to emphasize a contrast between the silhouetted black and fire of the predator-like jet with the ethereal lighting of the angel.

...didn't anticipate changing it to a vertical composition. For the sky, I've used 20+ different layers with a variety of different brushes.

hi Bwalters1

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=288591
Thank you Bwalters, for your comments , you speak like an art critic, I am impressed with the way you read a painting, for my part some of it is subconscious, I'm mainly driven by the aesthetics and composition, but of course it is a character study so the more I can convey the better it is for the viewer. I hope to finalise things this weekend and will adapt the lone bull, its always great to get feedback, I like your sword analogy, and yes I think he is a character seen in a private moment.

In respect to your image, of course I'm attracted to it and its traditional rendering,
I like the concept and composition. I would bring the Angel closer to the viewer and perhaps try another pose. I feel the Angel could dominate the image more, I love the beam of light, the Fighter Plane I would blur at the tail and wings, to create movement. You could have a missile being fired, or bullet trail, like there is some sort of Divine intervention. Indeed, you could have an aircraft carrier in the sea that way the plane is flying in the down position or and Island breaking through the cloud. Anyway I just throw out ideas as I see them. I love you pencil sketch's real-Art worthy of frames! look forward to the finished painting.

My basic idea was a comfrontation between two "angels": one technological and the other spiritual; one a war machine and the other gentle.

Thinking about it, the idea probably originated in some way with Lincoln's first inaugural address -which concluded with "the better angels of our nature."
It certainly reflects our involvement with the Iraq War.

...hey, thanks GCSociety for creating this opportunity, I picked up alot of techniques (first time I digitally painted a sky, a jetfighter or an angel).
