I'm still keeping my mind open about what kind of scene I'll make but I do know that I want a female character to be central in the scene so heres an early version of her.

Well I did some more finishing touches on her face, which I hope is starting to look more natural to everyone.

The next step in my plan is to texture map her skin. And After that I'll z brush her.

On the concept I still haven't decided on exactly what to do, I just haven't been able to make a sketch that pops out for me. All I know is I want to have this character be a central part in it.

I started working on the skin shader. Right now its just a blinn with red colored incandecence, but it doesn't look like skin. If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve the look of the skin I would appreciate the advice.

Hey man, you've made a promising start.

It looks like your overall proportions are sound, and the face is looking better and better in the lastest posts.

Maybe her arms could be a bit longer and her hips are a bit sharp. The shader doesn't look too bad although it's hard to tell from that render, certainly she is a bit too orange right now.

Good work, any sign of a concept?

Thanks for the responses, I agree with Swamps I think the arms may be a little short. On the hips I'm not sure yet but I'll keep looking to see if they look a little strange. Your Zombie is looking good too, I can't wait to see the end result.

While this model probably won't be used for animation, I would like to design the mesh so that it can easily be animated and deformed. If you look closely at this mesh there are a few n-gons and triangles in spots where objects that require more polys like hands and feet connect to parts with less polys. I don't know if this is acceptable, but it seems like it would be ok as long as the triangles and N-gons are in spots that won't affect deformation.

Anyway I'm just a student trying to get into the industry and I want to make sure I do everything right, so if anyone has any suggestions on how I can do things better I'm all ears.
Thanks for the Help!

I added a subsurface scattering shader to the model, the next thing I'm going to do is create a skin pore texture.

I did a little more work on the skin shader today, the only problem I'm having with this shader is it doesn't do real well with bump maps. If anyone know of a good sub surface scattering shader I would appreciate it if they tell me about it.

This is my concept sketch, I must appologize for the crude rendering, it's the best I can do. The idea behind my concept is a girl sitting in a cathedral looking at a stone gargoyle, when suddenly it comes alive from it's long slumber and bites her. What will make this spectacular is partly the achatecture and lighting of the magnificant cathedral, the painstaking detail I hope to put into both the female character, and the stone gargoyle in the forground. I also want this to be spectacular because the camera has caught a rare moment when one of the creatures that we thought to be myth has finally been proven to be fact after awaking from his long slumber. I hope this fits the criteria of being spectacular, if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions on how I can strengthen this concept I would greatly appreciate their advice, thanks everyone and good luck.

This is a rough model of my cathedral. I plan to continue to work on the lighting and get it a little more easy to see. Also once I get more of the rough spots fixed I plan on putting some stone statues into the archetecture which will add some nice little minute details. If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them, thanks.

Well I did a few modifications to the cathedral to clean the image up, i think the floor still needs a little work, the stairs near the bottom, also I need to find a better way to bump map the brick walls on the ceiling. I'll probably try using displacement mapping. If anyone has any ideas I would be happy to hear them.

Well I started working on giving my female character clothing, and on working on her position in the scene. I think I'm going to make my concept a woman praying in a magnificant cathedral. The gargoyle statue will simply be part of the piller looking down at her. I hope this fits the idea of spectacular, after all it's not giant robots smashing up the city, or something like that. I hope I will have the ability to make this spectacular in more suptle ways.

Did a little more work like adding in small details, and small ajustments to the lighting. Soon It will be ready for the next step which is to add in the female character I've been working on. I think instead of having her praying I'll make her either an angel or a demon. That would probably make a spectactular event if an angel or demon showed up suddenly.
Also thanks for the encouragement everyone I really appreciate it.

Did a few minor ajustments to the lighting, I've taken it about as far as I can for the moment. It still looks unfinished to me but I'm out of energy for right now, so I'll probably take a break and start working on the characters that will be in the scene. Hopefully once I get it all together I can make it look more finished and balanced.

Heres a concept sketch for the clothing the girl will be wearing. I don't know if I mentioned it in my previous posts but my final idea for this will be an angel that has just come down to earth and appeared in an ancient cathedral. It has fallen into disarray and only a few devoted followers still inhabit the place. The picture will depict her in looking at the cathedral while a bunch of suprised and devoted followers stare in amazement at finally seeing the proof of their faith. If any of yall have ideas on how she should look I would greatly appreciate them.
Thanks

Well I finally gave her some wings, these won't be the final wings of course, but they will serve as nice place holders. I'm not sure whether it would be better to model the wings or just make them bitmaps.
The big question I have to figure out is if this compostion is strong enough.

Well this morning I made wings for her, I still need to work on the feather pattern to make it look more natural, also I plan to pose the people better so they won't look so stiff. Hopefully with lots of luck I can get this thing to work before I have to turn it in.

Well, in trying to place the two figures in the scene I came to the realization that I couldn't get them to really add anything to the cathedral, and on top of that they were even detracting from the image because they were blocking beautiful architecture. So I'm playing with a few ideas on having a less prominent human element instead. If I go with this idea it will be an image depicting a monk who has just finished a long and difficult pilgrimage to an ancient cathedral and he is in awe of what he sees. That's how I'm going to fill once I finish this thing.

gwhite206

The monk walks into the cathedral and a picture is taken right as an earthquake hits.

Well I've been having a hard time trying to figure out which direction to take this. Most of my friends think that the cathedral without the monk in it is the best composition, I personally think that the monk adds a nice human element to it. Anyway I thought that I would post my ideas for the final image up here and see what everyone thinks. Idea 1 is just the cathedral, idea 2 is a monk who has just finished a long pilgrimage and is in awe of the cathedral, and the last idea is capturing a picture of the cathedral right before it collapses from an earthquake. I think I'm going to go with the idea 2 but if the cathedral without the monk is as popular then I'll submit that instead. THanks
for the suggestions.

Jaba153
12-03-2005, 03:09 AM
mmmmh geoffrey i'm agree with the first version..the work on the cathedral is perfect the monk doesn't looks so good as the background ...( is good but the cathedral is more awesome!!) or maybe he need a better pose or more special effects on it ...glows..blur...etc..actually the balance between the background & the monk is too ruff...sorry it's just my opinion don't pay so much attention..in any case there's a great work!

gwhite206
12-03-2005, 03:27 AM
Well your probably right, since thats what everyone I talk to says. It may be that I'm to close into the project and I can't see the forest through the trees. Another possible problem is that my ability to model things is much better than my abilty to model people and so no matter how I place him in the scene he will look faky. Anyway thanks for the advice.

Hey Geoffrey,

Nice job on this   , Idea one 1 I think is the best . Although idea 2 is good too, the character doesn't take that much away from the image. Either way you go , you did a great job.

Great work! I don't know how I could have missed this ... really nice.

I agree with you that a human character would make the scene more intense. I think the pose in the middle comp, 2 - works very well. Perhaps, as Mathieu says, some more detailing added for the monk would be good. Keep going, and good luck

Good work so far

IMHO the pose of the character in #2 have great power but the lighting in #3 is more powerful so if you can just play with the light in the pose #2 that will be perfect.

Good luck in this last steps :bounce:

After much tweaking I decided that the best thing to do was to keep the image simple, and leave the characters out of the image. My final concept is spectacular because of the architecture, and the lighting. While it doesn't live up to my original expectations, i feel that I've grown a lot as a 3d artist because of this contest. I'm really happy that the guys at cg society came up with the idea to make a contest like this. Thanks for the support everyone, I hope to see yall in the next contest.

Heres the final image, The story is the cathedral has been abandoned for centuries and dust, and vines have now grown up though the floor, the image is depicting the beauty of nature and architecture.

Awesome interior  I see you removed the characters for the final image and I think it`s a good choice... this interior have enough soul without them :)

Good luck for the final vote :bounce:

I were gonna suggest just the one monk on his knees in the light of the window as if mourning the loss of this chapel/church environment but yep - definitely much better without the characters. good decision

truly stunning work
