I had been debating wether or not to participate in the challenge...

I have three concepts so far.

1- Handicaped walking again. I thought of using Christopher Reeves as the subject. Standing triumphant with his wheel chair behind him.

2- The last image broadcasted before impact. How about a fish eye view from the ground up of a city and a couple in the middle of the street embracing while a giant meteor rapidly appreaches what will become ground zero.

3- Fly by. I imagined a very congested city during rush hour and some of the people driving are speechless about the flying car traveling at high speeds not too far over their heads.

From these I think the first two are the most evocative. I need some help deciding which one to pick since I thought I had a very strong evocative image in the last challenge.

09-05-2005, 10:16 PM
I like idea 2, but idea 1 might be more evocative. Good luck on picking one and on the challenge:thumbsup: .

09-05-2005, 11:28 PM
Glad to see you here, SNoWs. :)

Of the 3 concepts, the 2nd seems to have the most emotion and depth in it (to me, at least). Looking forward to seeing more.

09-06-2005, 01:16 AM
hey, thanks for the comments.

idea 1- 0
idea 2- 2

09-08-2005, 07:09 AM
I vote for number two as well! :)

09-08-2005, 02:59 PM
Hello, Nieves. Last challenge you've done a great peace of work. I hope to see something impressive again, good luck. Second idea seems to be the best from those three, although I like the first one too.

09-09-2005, 11:56 AM
Hello guys, it seems like most people like the 2nd idea the best.
I hope to start posting images soon.

09-16-2005, 03:40 PM
Great Concept #2. ALso love the new Avatar! It's perfect!

09-16-2005, 06:19 PM
You better start sketching!

09-16-2005, 07:28 PM
Hi Angel, i didn't recognize u for your new avatar, Where is Mazzingger? lol, anyway nice to find u in, I wish u tons of fun during this new challenge!

Ops! by the way, where are those sketchs??

09-17-2005, 02:08 PM
I found this illustration and thought it would make a good avatar. ;)
mazinger might come back in the future.

anyways, I finished collecting buildings reference and I'll make a sketch today... I hope.

finally the concept sketch.

very rough and probably over-worked but hey it brings the idea home right?

09-17-2005, 05:18 PM
Big concept...are you planning on having bunches of people running away from the impact spot? That might make it a bit more panic filled and lifelike. Good luck on your entry!

09-17-2005, 06:19 PM
that was the plan, along with cars with the doors opened etc. Let's see how much I can actually get done with the limited amount of time I have.

09-17-2005, 06:50 PM
2nd concept for sure, nice. I think you sould just keep the two people but have the city look empty and evacuated. (car doors open, personal belongings left behind on the street, ect. I like how your concept drawing shows that. if you keep just the 2 of them i think you'll get more emotion out of the scene as they were the only one's that didn't get out of ground zero and now have no choice but to witness their own destruction together.

But then again, if you have other people panicing in the streets, around them, tring to run for there live's, the two will stand out as the only one's that are ready to accept what is to come.
Very nice concept man, Good luck and can't wait to see it done.

09-18-2005, 09:26 AM
Promising concept. I like P&P's thoughts but can't decide which one would fit more. Ah, well, that is for you, Nieves, to decide. Can't wait to see that in 3d!

Started modeling buildings. Here is the first one.

Here is the second one.

I wanted to experiment with the fisheye effect and determine if it would be easier to do in post or on the actual render.

Here is the result in post...
The advantage of doing this in post is that I have the freedom to change the amount of distortion on the fly.

09-18-2005, 04:27 PM
Thanks guys for the comments. P&P nailed it. That's the line of thought I followed when I came up with the concept, focusing on the evocative side of the image first.

First I wanted to add a few people running around in the scene, including a crazy man with a sign that reads "The end is near!" But since I have very little time to work on this the plan is to have the lonely couple in there with the empty cars etc. if I have time then I'll add the extras.

09-18-2005, 05:36 PM
hey man! how are you , good luck man!

Here is another test of the fisheye effect.

09-19-2005, 12:27 AM
Fisheye is a nice idea - might be hard not to get it nausiastic, though.

Keep it up :)

Started working on building #4

09-20-2005, 01:27 PM
Oh yeah, this will be awesome, I know it!

09-20-2005, 01:34 PM
Hey man, where you been? Thought we might have to do this one without you!

Cool concept, look forward to seeing it develop...

09-20-2005, 01:57 PM
hey, man. there you are. looking good as usual. it looks like we'll both be modeling a lot of buildings for our entries.

09-20-2005, 02:07 PM
Hey guys!

@razz... I'll give it my best shot for sure ;)

@Swamps... I almost don't enter but couldn't resist a good challenge. Will see if I can actually finish it.

@flinder... yep, what I'll be doing to reduce the workload is to model hires buildings for the foreground and lowres for the ones in the distance, will be easier on Mental Ray as well.

I may be a bit picky but the K in KAP doesn't seem quite right. I you use a C the kerning will look a lot better. (but that's me)

I think the city layout is almost there. I cloned a couple of buildings as place holders, I'll be placing more buildings towards the horizon.

Hi, I guess the consept number 2 is optimal for this challenge.

Good Luck.

09-23-2005, 04:28 PM
That spherical camera distortion looks pretty good!

Here is a render out of Maya and distorted in AFX. The fisheye effect might be a bit too much here but I'm still experimenting and see what works best.

09-25-2005, 06:50 PM
City is looking great! the fish eye look is definitely working! can't wait to see it completed..

Dreamlord (Blender)
09-25-2005, 09:17 PM

You are doing a city also. It looks damn good. Wish my city would look as good as yours.

09-25-2005, 10:46 PM
Hi guys, thaks for all the comments!

Hey Dreamlord. Yeah it seems like cities were "the thing" in this challenge. ;)
You too can make a killer city. I spent a day looking for good reference and came up with really good images, just google away.

The buildings themselves are quite simple to make really, as long as you have good ref material to work from. If you have any questions let me know and I'll try to help.

09-26-2005, 01:44 AM
This "fisheye" look is really cool to me! I love it! Keep up the good work.

09-26-2005, 05:05 AM
Awesome fisheye, and those building look great love your composition.

09-26-2005, 05:44 AM
Yeah cool, another city :)
You have done really good buildings and the fisheye looks great
Keep up the good work

09-26-2005, 12:51 PM
The fisheye look fits here perfectly. Beautiful buldings, and yeah, it makes a nice town. You're doing great, Nieves. Can't wait to see more. Keep it coming.

09-26-2005, 03:51 PM
I really like the details you are putting into the buildings. The brick inlay looks really nice.

Here is building #6

09-26-2005, 04:32 PM
looking good. I can't wait to see the what kind of destruction the building wil have. will you be modeling debris or will use a partical program?
keep on going its looking great.

09-26-2005, 07:02 PM
thanks for all the comments!

P&P, I don't think I'll be destroying the buildings, the meteor will look like is falling right smack on the middle of the road and the buildings on the BG will be partially covered by the meteor and it's smoke trail. It's all about the anticipation; but will see, if I think down the road that a couple of buildings messed up and debris will add to the feeling of the piece I might go for it but right now is not the plan.

Wooo~ cool, your city environment is coming along nice, nice angle too. Good luck with it all, cya~

09-29-2005, 01:07 AM
very good n fast modelling! keep up the great works, the cityscape looks fantastic and the fisheye is great extra. keep on rocking mate!

09-29-2005, 11:16 AM
Hi SNows, really great architectural modeling!
i also like the camera frame, nice angle!
Looking forward to see next updates ;)

edit: i just saw you've got 854 posts in your profile and i said you welcome by pm.. LOL... shame on me:D

09-29-2005, 02:59 PM
Hello guys, thanks for the nice comments!
I've been playing with lighting for the last day and a half... I'll post something soon.

collings: no worries man ;)

I've been playing with the lighting; here is one of the test images.

09-29-2005, 04:53 PM
looking excellent. are you doing mostly procedurals for your buildings? i'm trying to decide how to approach the texturing part.

09-29-2005, 05:08 PM
I'll probably mix procedurals and image maps. Right now I'm texturing the road and the sidewalk with image maps.

09-29-2005, 06:02 PM
it looks spectacular even now :) so peacefull and quiet place...before BIG BOOM!

09-30-2005, 03:54 AM
Nice camera, I love this type of views. Good luck.

09-30-2005, 11:45 AM
Oh man! I love it. Can't imagine how it will look with all people (a couple, yeah?), cars and meteor there. Then the effects etc. This sure will be spectacular. Best of luck to you, Nieves.

09-30-2005, 01:08 PM
Thanks guys! I'm in the middle of finding a better lighting solution to try to get rid of that nuke highlight, it was bothering me just too much.

09-30-2005, 01:09 PM
very nice modelling here, congrats !

09-30-2005, 03:40 PM
I loved the last updade!
The building modelling was very cool. Also the ilumination is great too!
Keep it up!

09-30-2005, 04:26 PM
hi SNoWs

the modeling is superb and the daylight test is very cool ..looks sunny :)!

09-30-2005, 04:26 PM
Now it looks really cool. Congrats.

10-01-2005, 02:35 PM
Thanks guys!

I need some help finding good "Ford Crown Victoria" references or blueprints to work from.
I want to make a taxi car with it. I have searched many blueprint sites and googled many keywords and have come up pretty much empty. If you happen to know a good link or two feel free to post it here.

10-01-2005, 02:45 PM
Nice work so far. The process is also very interesting.

I know I'm not nearly done with modeling but I wanted to post what I have so far for the road texture which has to be the biggest one in the scene. I still need to dirty up the yellow line, it's almost there... maybe a bit too specular.. will see what it looks like with GI.

10-02-2005, 01:26 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/8065/8065_1128216391_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/8065/8065_1128216391_large.jpg)

ok, I revised the texture for the road and I like it much better than the previous one. I'm moving on to some props for the city... I'm still looking for Crown Victoria references.

10-02-2005, 11:29 AM
the buildings looks very nice man :) congrats , btw theres somthn that I dont like in your texture on the road may be it looks too bumpy near the camera v but Im sure you gonna make it :) nice work anyway good luck

10-02-2005, 12:59 PM
I think the road texture looks pretty good, maybe you need a bit more decay and dirt on the painted areas. Cheers!

Cool boyband avatar Divaise dude...

10-02-2005, 01:27 PM
Thanks for the comments and suggestions, I'll add more grime to the painted areas. I'll look into the bump... it is pretty low right now .01 so it could be a low anti-aliasing for previews issue.

10-02-2005, 01:32 PM
keetmun haha :)) my favourite pinky t-shirt there's a sign on the back "Gigolo Latino 500Euro x Night" :))

SnoWs man yeah I think the bump is okei its probably cause its still not high render :) good luck

10-03-2005, 02:59 AM
Hello there. It seems I haven't dropped by so here I am
You are being watched.

I have to say I really like that paralax effect of the buildings. Very nicely done.

10-03-2005, 03:51 AM
hey man nice to see you again.....
I like a lot the buildings, very nice. And the illumination is great and very cool the idea. i want to see more updates:twisted:

10-03-2005, 06:05 AM
This is coming together very nicely. I like the buildings and the great sense of depth from the camera angle you have, like someone is standing on the street with a point-n-shoot camera. Kind of reminds me of some of the September 11th footage.

Keep up the good work!

10-03-2005, 04:06 PM
I like the perspective you chose. Can't wait to start seeing the little details. ie. signs, fire hydrant etc...

Hi all! thanks for all the C&C.

Started modeling all the little details for the city. I also found good images of the Crown Victoria but no blueprints.
I also found good reference for the couple that goes on the road.

here is the dumpster that will barely be seen, so I made the texture low res.

10-04-2005, 05:09 AM
Really nice buildings! Maybe add some random rotation to the plates on the mirrored building (very slight) so that it breaks up that perfect mirror effect? Even if the building is really well made, it would hardly be so perfect...

10-04-2005, 02:02 PM
hi dvelasco you are right, I was planing on trying a large bump on the glass to brake it up and add that distortion but I'll also try your suggestion; it will take some experimenting to get the right look. I'm in the middle of modeling a mailbox, I'll post it soon.

10-04-2005, 03:12 PM
do you all think the dumpster is way too dirty for this city? the buildings will not be this messed up... so I was thinking to tone down this texture...like no graffiti and such...

today I've been playing with the meteor shader. This is just a simple sphere and not the actual meteor wich I still haven't modeled yet.

here is a surfaced version of building 3. The bg is a placeholder to check for reflections...

10-07-2005, 02:52 PM
Hi SNoWs
This being well and better! i'm liking the texture process!
keep posting man

10-07-2005, 10:12 PM
Very good concept!

Cool stuff so far, but building is just too 3d-ish, it needs a lot of depth and architectural details, the buildings must be gradiently damaged from the meteor to the forground.

I can see this as a very good action image!

10-07-2005, 10:44 PM
Good progress. I like the updates so far. Can't wait to see the elements together.

here is a detail of building4. I'm not entirely happy with the marble decorations so I might revisit that later on.

10-08-2005, 03:26 AM
thanks for the feedback!
Lauro_MX: thanks bud :)

3d-empire... I see what you mean. These renderings of the buildings etc have absolutely no light setup, most of them only have a dome, that's it... just to see the textures and reflections as I go, so they might as you say look too 3d. Humm about the buildings getting destroyed progressively... I still don't know, it really depends how much I can get done with the time. I still think that the buildings wouldn't get damaged until the actual impact since there is no shockwave yet and the meteor is not making physical contact with the buildings... I don't want to place the metor diagonally in order to make a damaged building because it would ruin the composition.

All that of course, could change depending on how the image works after I place the couple hugging on the street.

tiburonsita::love: as soon as I finish surfacing the buildings I'll start to put it all toghether.

10-08-2005, 05:22 AM
I think that the marble veins are too big. They kinda kill the scale of the building.

10-08-2005, 01:45 PM
yep, you are right, I'll fix it as soon as possible.

ah, here is a fix for that aweful marble texture I did last night.

here is "The Cap" building surfaced.
if time allows I'll make the store front like real glass and model a looted store inside.

10-10-2005, 04:52 AM
Good progress with the modelling mate, will have to put all the buildings together to see the details though.

Cheers and keep going!

here is building 7 as usual a simple scene with 1 light to test reflections.

Keetmun: thanks, man!
I'll be placing all the buildings into the scene soon.

10-10-2005, 04:23 PM
nice buildings

10-11-2005, 03:27 AM
that marble on number 4 looks far better now :)

Finished painting building textures but I still need to fine tune the surfaces.

Now if I could only get one crashless Maya/MR session...

here is a better render of the city... is much better than the last IMO. Fixed the reflections and some shaders. Still need to fix the red awnings and the reflection bump on the foreground building in shadow.

Hopefully I'll start on the cars and the people soon.

10-14-2005, 08:02 PM
Since the meteor hasn't arrived yet, I feel like going shopping :)

10-14-2005, 08:38 PM
Hi Angel, The city is looking great i thought it was a Photo, My only crit, is that the street seems a bit narrow, but the problem is the size of the street lines texture, compare the size of the mail box, and imagine a human next to it, then compare the size of the lines

10-14-2005, 10:07 PM
that's a good observation climax.
I'll fix that when I start texturing the cars.

tiburonsita: aren't you on a budget? ;)

10-14-2005, 11:20 PM
hi SNoWs

a ton of progress here mate ! sorry didnt see this before!:banghead: ... hmmm i like the overly exposed side work in the previouse one ... just have a liking for those kind of lights hehe!
cheers mate!

10-15-2005, 01:01 AM
Nice Image man You still have a lot to model so hurry up  and Good luck

10-15-2005, 01:24 PM
Hey Angel,

I like the cityscape you have modelled so far, I really like the mainly glass building. Good job:thumbsup: I too think the street is a bit narrow.... look forward to the meteor.

10-15-2005, 05:52 PM
wow. amazing texturing. very realistic:thumbsup:

10-15-2005, 07:00 PM
thanks guys for all the c&c, apreciated. There's some things I want to fix in the city but it is done for the most part.

10-15-2005, 07:22 PM
Good work so far. The building are so good, especially the glass building. I don't liked of the sky. I think that you is going to the good scene.

10-27-2005, 09:47 AM
Nice progress so far Angel, I had some thoughts(skepticism) about some of your textures, but in the final scene it all ads up greatly ... Cant wait to see the Comet!

10-27-2005, 10:04 AM
City's looking really good

Is that an insanely huge post box I can spy there on the left?

10-27-2005, 03:47 PM
finally someone noticed! I changed the size of the mailboxes and made the lightposts taller as well, I've been busy with freeance work that I haven't been able to post anything in a while... still lots to do, very little time, I'm starting to dbout I'll be able to finish this one on time.:hmm:

11-07-2005, 03:47 PM

Well, after finishing some freelance work I'm finally back on track! Right now it seems I won't be able to make everything I wanted but I'll try after all the main elements are done.

Here is the zbrush work on the meteor.

11-08-2005, 12:27 AM
Great Zbrush work on the meteor. Looking at your's makes me wish I hadn't stuck to a perfectly round shape for mine. I like the more realistic look.

Keep up the good work!

here is one of the low res cars for the background, I don't think much of the bg will be seen anyway because of the foreground characters but I'll put them in and see how it works out.

Next in my priority list:
1-The couple
2-Meteor trail
2-The Crown Victoria Taxis
3-Street junk

Here is the meteor with the previous shader I had developed. I wanted a rocky surface but also have some strong speculars suggesting other type of elements in the rock.

11-10-2005, 08:16 PM
nice asteroid SNoWs.

we're just finishing up an asteroid movie here at work for the sci-fi channel and it's interesting to see how someone else builds an asteroid. (very similar to ours actually, zbrush with a brownish reddish rocky texture. then (after it's blown up) and black shiney, more metallic look.

very cool.

might i suggest some high frequency noise in the bump/color/specular channel? it might help give you a larger sense of scale. we were very pleased with the results we got with zbrush displacement but adding just a touch of fine bump made the asteroid seem much larger and heavier.

11-11-2005, 12:29 AM
It kinda looks like mud

11-11-2005, 04:48 AM
cool concept. the meteor looks like its coming along nicely. Im excite dto see what you do with the effects.

11-11-2005, 08:42 AM
Hey what a cool building modelling and the scene come out really nice... waiting for the composition when the meteorite is on action !

11-11-2005, 04:38 PM
wow, I guess that there is some sort of server problem I've been trying to reply for almost 2 days, the pages take like 5-10 min to come up. Completely unusable...

Anyways, thanks all for the replies!

meatpuppet: that's really cool, looking forward to see it in the SciFi channel. I'll experiment with a high frequency noise and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

nemirc: yeah it kinda does but I bet you it is because of the strong specular and the deafault Maya light. I don't like to spend a lot of time in a good light rig just to test a shader. It looks quite different in the actual scene with the proper lighting.

jd: thanks! I was messing with the road texture yesterday, bringing more to scale. I'll hopefully have something to show soon... if I can actually get through here.

Here is the city pretty much done and rendered at full res. I did a bit of photoshop work here (like adding the sky) but will not be doing more ps work until I have all the elements rendered.

this is 25% of the full res image.

11-13-2005, 04:30 PM
Cool buildings! Can't wait to see what they all look like after it's done. In my opinion, using the fisheye lense effect will make it more... original. :applause:

11-13-2005, 04:37 PM

11-13-2005, 11:43 PM
Thanks for the comments guys, very encouraging.

11-14-2005, 07:09 AM
Maybe you can add lowrez buildings at the very end of the street to sell the effect of "infinity point", unless you want to give the impression that the city abruptly ends at that spot.

And nice distance fog would be a nice touch too ;)

Keep it up. You are almost done

11-14-2005, 12:31 PM
the couple in the middle of the street will be covering that spot so there is no benefit in making more buildings on the horizon line.

Started modeling the couple.
Here is the start of the guy's shirt.

11-15-2005, 02:38 AM
I'm really liking the city. The texturing is really incredible. I agree that a few low-poly buildings (or a painted background) would help the end of the road feel less like it's a "cliff" that you could drive off of.

Keep up the good work!

11-15-2005, 03:35 AM
Love the reflections in the building windows. Now bring on the smokin' meteor :)

11-15-2005, 03:46 PM
impressive modelling details on your shirt

11-15-2005, 04:57 PM
excellent work with the textures, and that street is just great:thumbsup:

11-15-2005, 08:31 PM
hiya SNoWs

cool progress here ! very realistic wrinkles on the shirt!

11-16-2005, 02:05 AM
Thanks everyone for the comments!

I'll be making the arms now and then the girl, I think at that point everything is going to start to click.

11-16-2005, 10:18 PM
nice work. make sure you give the guy a butt :) the wrinkles are awesome but it needs a little bump down in the bum.

11-16-2005, 10:54 PM
Good work!

Street look cool.
Nice work on the shirt!
imo it still looks a bit flat tho, like it needs a body shape in it.

you are insane man O_O

11-17-2005, 04:29 AM
tiburonsita, yeah, at first I thought I could get away without making the legs but now I'm not so sure, might as well make the legs. ;)

3d-empire, yeah, you are right, right now is a bit flatbut once I drop the arms in I think it'll click... with a bit of cv tewaking.

Here is the hand of the girl. Took me 3 hrs to make, would have taken less time but in the middle of modeling I didn't like what I had and started over.

11-17-2005, 07:41 AM
Congrats, I really like your work! The buildings are very nice and I like the shirt modeling too. Can you tell me which kind of bump map did you use for the road?

11-17-2005, 12:40 PM
good modeling of that hand...looks very simple...good work:scream:

11-17-2005, 02:26 PM
medunecer, for the road I went outside and took a pic of the road then made a 2000x4000 map using the pic I took, I painted the lines and cross walk in PS.

The map for the road had to be large enough to avoid pixelation at full print res. To make the file manageable I created a Maya .map file. Nothing fancy.

Here is a pic of the color map at 8% and a piece of the bump map at 100%

melkao, thanks!

Added the arms. I think now it is more clear where I was going with this.

I still need to fix the shirt a bit and add a few wrinkles where the finguers are.

Still to do: heads, pants and time permitting the taxi.

Finished making the skin color map. I also shaped the shirt more to give the girl's arms more presence. I included a wire for those of you interested in seeing wires.

Started making the girl head. I used an image from my reference collection. I think she was in Episode III. If someone knows where I can find a hires version please let me know.

11-18-2005, 11:39 PM

Arms and hands did a lot to the shirt!
Good start on the face:thumbsup:

Here is what the couple looks like so far. The heads turned out a bit on the pinkish side so I need to color correct it. The guy's head is the same girl head.

Very nice job on shirt's folds looks real cool:thumbsup: Very nice concept. Keep up the good work.
Waiting for your next rocking update:bounce: :bounce:

11-20-2005, 02:31 PM
maybe you could push the expression on the brows a little bit further ;)

Here is an update to the couple. Added subtle sss; changed the facial expression of the girl and tweaked her nose bridge. Also made the neck of the guy thicker.

This isn't the actual light set up but a quick one just to test. I still need to texture the shirt.

11-21-2005, 08:01 PM
great escene...the couple is beautiful:thumbsup:, i want to be that man

Today I spent some time adding the couple to the actual scene. Adjusted the sss effect and then did a slap comp to test.

I'm actually linking it without the taxis. I think they might crowd the scene and make it too bottom heavy and busy. I'm going to proceed as planned but the taxis might not make it into the final comp.

11-22-2005, 03:26 AM
Looks fantastic! (Spectactular if I may say)

11-22-2005, 03:38 AM
Wow the comp. looks great dude:thumbsup: Some taxis may add more to your scene but not too overcrowded, it all depends on you but I really like this comp. Waiting for next update:bounce: :bounce:

11-22-2005, 05:49 AM
NIce ! I thought at first sight that it was a photography !
Your concept is cool !

11-22-2005, 06:38 AM
The love is in the air! :) Nice update Angel! I like the wrinkles in clothing, good job!

11-22-2005, 01:00 PM
Thanks guys for all the nice comments!

on to the hair, meteor and smoke, then the taxi.

11-23-2005, 03:49 PM
Looks awesome! Especially their skin. One small suggestion: Please move her left hand down about 12-14 inches :buttrock: .

11-23-2005, 05:08 PM
LOL! good one froggy.:D

11-23-2005, 05:27 PM
OH Yeah!

Looks very good, the people are super done and the shirt makes sense now,.

Hugging in the street,.. accident waiting to happen,..

11-23-2005, 05:46 PM
hey snows the girl is your girl? or is another person?:wip:

11-23-2005, 07:15 PM

Here are some of the rendered elements.
I'll post a comp soon.

11-24-2005, 06:41 PM
Hey Angel,

Your are the king of cloth aren't you , that shirt with all the folds is excellent:bounce: . The sky and buildings make for a great backdrop  and I look forward to the fireball in the sky. Are you going to add some cars/other people .

Great job and good luck finishing up

Finally, here is a test comp. I added the fisheye effect, the main meteor, fire and smoke, small pieces of debris and some retouching.

I still need to add hair and smaller meteors and maybe the taxis... maybe.

11-24-2005, 11:27 PM
You have really done an excellent job here. My only crit is that the woman's hands seem a bit too broad. I can see you put a lot of time into this so far and it has paid off! The wrinkles on the man's shirt are great.

11-25-2005, 12:12 AM
Nice with the fisheye effect!

It's gonna be great!
are they the onlt people on the street?
city seems a bit empty, no panic just a cleen ctiy..

On the other hand two people alone in the the city getting hit by a meteor is not something you see every day.

Darling.. did you remember pretection?

11-25-2005, 03:36 AM
wow ! it's very cool image and spectacular! fish eye lens is nice too! but I agree with gardog about woman arm and hand are a bit too big, don't know its effect by fish eye lens?
anyway , good job man!

11-25-2005, 12:38 PM
Thanks for all the comments guys!

About the arms... well those are my wife hands and arms and I rather like them so I'm going to keep them, not all women have supermodel hands you know.:)

At the beggining I thout of having an evacuated city with these two staying bahind. Then I wanted to add people running; now I'm not so sure nor I think I have enough time. I like the idea of the couple staying behind, kinda creepy to see a city so "dead"

I still want to add abandoned cars tho.

11-25-2005, 07:29 PM
wow thars very deep...the last hug:sad:

11-25-2005, 07:42 PM
Heh, I told you.... I saw that one coming miles away..... :bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

It looks like a book cover.
Looking forward to your finished entry.

11-26-2005, 08:41 PM
hey man i like your concept a lot, and i think youre achieving a great result, ..good job man!! the cloth looks very nice, is it cloth simulation? or just modeled? very cool!

11-26-2005, 09:01 PM
Hey, gracias Roberto!

rattlesnake: It is all modeled.

gardogg and monsitj: I thought to take another look to what you both said and decided that it was because the heads were a bit too small. I changed them and now looks more proportionate, so thanks to you both.

I'll post an update soon. I added smaller meteor trails and painted the hair.

Almost done... Here I added the hair, made the heads a bit larger, added smaller meteor trails. I wasn't able to find any Crown Victoria blueprints so I'll have to wing it with reference photos.

Started making the crown victoria for the taxi. This one has been tougher than any of the other models cause I never found blueprints so I'm trying to make a "close as possible" version instead of an accurate version.

Just a quick update on the Crown Victoria.
It's taking shape...

Almost done... Here I added the hair, made the heads a bit larger, added smaller meteor trails. I wasn't able to find any Crown Victoria blueprints so I'll have to wing it with reference photos.

wow, nice paralax :bounce:

Here is what I have so far for the CV. I wanted to also make the interior but this late in the game it might not be feasible.

Almost the whole body is done. Still need to make the mirrors, windows wheels and interiors. Don't know if I can finish the Taxi on time.

Finally had some time to finish this model. I'm happy how it turned out without having blueprints to work from. I essentially used only 2 pics from the reference I collected.

Now on to texturing...

a very nice taxi's car... and now give us the final ! A very impressive and spectacular image... :wip:

that taxi model is very nice...and a quietion....the fireball i made in?...is fantastic that meteor:banghead:

12-02-2005, 01:25 PM
Thanks guys, I put alot of effort into that taxi, it was difficult to make without blueprints and as a result is not an accurate model but it does serve it's purpose ;)

melkao: the meteor is rendered in Maya after sculpting in ZBrush. The fire is a composited explosion pass.

Ah, almost done! here is a render of the taxi. I still need to surface the tail lights but that's no biggie; after that is placing them in the scene, render and composite and DONE!

Impact is imminent. All the efforts to avoid catastrophy failed. During the chaos of a last minute evacuation David and Renee separated but destiny works in mysterious ways and by what some call coincidence, moments before the giant arrived they once again found each other at the same place where they first met.

They embraced one more time, every second feels like hours and not a word was spoken, none had to be said. now death is rapidly coming with a thunderous sound but that's allright now, they have each other and they leave with the greatest thing one can have... love.
