I had been debating wether or not to participate in the challenge...

I have three concepts so far.

1- Handicaped walking again. I thought of using Christopher Reeves as the subject. Standing triumphant with his wheel chair behind him.

2- The last image broadcasted before impact. How about a fish eye view from the ground up of a city and a couple in the middle of the street embracing while a giant meteor rapidly appreaches what will become ground zero.

3- Fly by. I imagined a very congested city during rush hour and some of the people driving are speechless about the flying car traveling at high speeds not too far over their heads.

From these I think the first two are the most evocative. I need some help deciding which one to pick since I thought I had a very strong evocative image in the last challenge.

Of the 3 concepts, the 2nd seems to have the most emotion and depth in it (to me, at least). Looking forward to seeing more.

Big concept...are you planning on having bunches of people running away from the impact spot? That might make it a bit more panic filled and lifelike. Good luck on your entry!

that was the plan, along with cars with the doors opened etc. Let's see how much I can actually get done with the limited amount of time I have.

2nd concept for sure, nice. I think you sould just keep the two people but have the city look empty and evacuated. (car doors open, personal belongings left behind on the street,ect. I like how your concept drawing shows that. if you keep just the 2 of them i think you'll get more emotion out of the scene as they were the only one's that didn't get out of ground zero and now have no choice but to witness their own destruction together.

But then again, if you have other people panicing in the streets, around them, tring to run for there live's, the two will stand out as the only one's that are ready to accept what is to come.
Very nice concept man, Good luck and can't wait to see it done.

I wanted to experiment with the fisheye effect and determine if it would be easier to do in post or on the actual render.

Here is the result in post...
The advantage of doing this in post is that I have the freedom to change the amount of distortion on the fly.

Thanks guys for the comments. P&P nailed it. That's the line of thought I followed when I came up with the concept, focusing on the evocative side of the image first.

First I wanted to add a few people running around in the scene, including a crazy man with a sign that reads "The end is near!" But since I have very little time to work on this the plan is to have the lonely couple in there with the empty cars etc. if I have time then I'll add the extras.

@razz... I'll give it my best shot for sure ;)

@Swamps... I almost don't enter but couldn't resist a good challenge. Will see if I can actually finish it.

@flinder... yep, what I'll be doing to reduce the workload is to model hires buildings for the foreground and lowres for the ones in the distance, will be easier on Mental Ray as well.

I may be a bit picky but the K in KAP doesn't seem quite right. I you use a C the kerning will look a lot better. (but that's me)

I think the city layout is almost there. I cloned a couple of buildings as place holders, I'll be placing more buildings towards the horizon.

Here is a render out of Maya and distorted in AFX. The fisheye effect might be a bit too much here but I'm still experimenting and see what works best.

Hey Dreamlord. Yeah it seems like cities were "the thing" in this challenge. ;)
You too can make a killer city. I spent a day looking for good reference and came up with really good images, just google away.

The buildings themselves are quite simple to make really, as long as you have good ref material to work from. If you have any questions let me know and I'll try to help.

P&P, I don't think I'll be destroying the buildings, the meteor will look like is falling right smack on the middle of the road and the buildings on the BG will be partially covered by the meteor and it's smoke trail. It's all about the anticipation; but will see, if I think down the road that a couple of buildings messed up and debris will add to the feeling of the piece I might go for it but right now is not the plan.

I want to make a taxi car with it. I have searched many blueprint sites and googled many keywords and have come up pretty much empty. If you happen to know a good link or two feel free to post it here.

I know I'm not nearly done with modeling but I wanted to post what I have so far for the road texture which has to be the biggest one in the scene. I still need to dirty up the yellow line, it's almost there... maybe a bit too specular.. will see what it looks like with GI.

ok, I revised the texture for the road and I like it much better than the previous one. I'm moving on to some props for the city... I'm still looking for Crown Victoria references.

I think the road texture looks pretty good, maybe you need a bit more decay and dirt on the painted areas. Cheers!

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, I'll add more grime to the painted areas. I'll look into the bump... it is pretty low right now .01 so it could be a low anti-aliasing for previews issue.

This is coming together very nicely. I like the buildings and the great sense of depth from the camera angle you have, like someone is standing on the street with a point-n-shoot camera. Kind of reminds me of some of the September 11th footage.

Hi all! thanks for all the C&C.

Started modeling all the little details for the city. I also found good images of the Crown Victoria but no blueprints.
I also found good reference for the couple that goes on the road.

Really nice buildings! Maybe add some random rotation to the plates on the mirrored building (very slight) so that it breaks up that perfect mirror effect? Even if the building is really well made, it would hardly be so perfect...

hi dvelasco you are right, I was planing on trying a large bump on the glass to brake it up and add that distortion but I'll also try your suggestion; it will take some experimenting to get the right look. I'm in the middle of modeling a mailbox, I'll post it soon.

today I've been playing with the meteor shader. This is just a simple sphere and not the actual meteor wich I still haven't modeled yet.

Very good concept!

Cool stuff so far, but building is just too 3d-ish, it needs a lot of depth and architectural details, the buildings must be gradiently damaged from the meteor to the forground.

I can see this as a very good action image!:thumbsup:

3d-empire... I see what you mean. These renderings of the buildings etc have absolutely no light setup, most of them only have a dome, that's it... just to see the textures and reflections as I go, so they might as you say look too 3d. Humm about the buildings getting destroyed progressively... I still don't know, it really depends how much I can get done with the time. I still think that the buildings wouldn't get damaged until the actual impact since there is no shockwave yet and the meteor is not making physical contact with the buildings... I don't want to place the metor diagonally in order to make a damaged building because it would ruin the composition.

All that of course, could change depending on how the image works after I place the couple hugging on the street.

here is a better render of the city... is much better than the last IMO. Fixed the reflections and some shaders. Still need to fix the red awnings and the reflection bump on the foreground building in shadow.

Hopefully I'll start on the cars and the people soon.

Hi Angel, The city is looking great i thought it was a Photo, My only crit, is that the street seems a bit narrow, but the problem is the size of the street lines texture, compare the size of the mail box, and imagine a human next to it, then compare the size of the lines :cool:

Here is the meteor with the previous shader I had developed. I wanted a rocky surface but also have some strong speculars suggesting other type of elements in the rock.

nice asteroid SNoWs.

we're just finishing up an asteroid movie here at work for the sci-fi channel and it's interesting to see how someone else builds an asteroid. (very similar to ours actually, zbrush with a brownish reddish rocky texture. then (after it's blown up) and black shiney, more metallic look.

very cool.

might i suggest some high frequency noise in the bump/color/specular channel? it might help give you a larger sense of scale. we were very pleased with the results we got with zbrush displacement but adding just a touch of fine bump made the asteroid seem much larger and heavier.

meatpuppet: that's really cool, looking forward to see it in the SciFi channel. I'll experiment with a high frequency noise and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

nemirc: yeah it kinda does but I bet you it is because of the strong specular and the deafault Maya light. I don't like to spend a lot of time in a good light rig just to test a shader. It looks quite different in the actual scene with the proper lighting.

jd: thanks! I was messing with the road texture yesterday, bringing more to scale. I'll hopefully have something to show soon... if I can actually get through here.

Maybe you can add lowrez buildings at the very end of the street to sell the effect of "infinity point", unless you want to give the impression that the city abruptly ends at that spot.

And nice distance fog would be a nice touch too ;)

I'm really liking the city. The texturing is really incredible. I agree that a few low-poly buildings (or a painted background) would help the end of the road feel less like it's a "cliff" that you could drive off of.

medunecer, for the road I went outside and took a pic of the road then made a 2000x4000 map using the pic I took, I painted the lines and cross walk in PS.

The map for the road had to be large enough to avoid pixelation at full print res. To make the file manageable I created a Maya .map file. Nothing fancy.

Here is a pic of the color map at 8% and a piece of the bump map at 100%

Here is an update to the couple. Added subtle sss; changed the facial expression of the girl and tweaked her nose bridge. Also made the neck of the guy thicker.

This isn't the actual light set up but a quick one just to test. I still need to texture the shirt.

Today I spent some time adding the couple to the actual scene. Adjusted the sss effect and then did a slap comp to test.

I'm actually linking it without the taxis. I think they might crowd the scene and make it too bottom heavy and busy. I'm going to proceed as planned but the taxis might not make it into the final comp.

About the arms... well those are my wife hands and arms and I rather like them so I'm going to keep them, not all women have supermodel hands you know.:)

At the beggining I thout of having an evacuated city with these two staying bahind. Then I wanted to add people running; now I'm not so sure nor I think I have enough time. I like the idea of the couple staying behind, kinda creepy to see a city so "dead"

I still want to add abandoned cars tho. :thumbsup:

gardogg and monsitj: I thought to take another look to what you both said and decided that it was because the heads were a bit too small. I changed them and now looks more proportionate, so thanks to you both.

Started making the crown victoria for the taxi. This one has been tougher than any of the other models cause I never found blueprints so I'm trying to make a "close as possible" version instead of an accurate version.

Thanks guys, I put alot of effort into that taxi, it was difficult to make without blueprints and as a result is not an accurate model but it does serve it's purpose ;)

melkao: the meteor is rendered in Maya after sculpting in ZBrush. The fire is a composited explosion pass.

Damm man !
I recall when I first saw this as wip a few weeks ago, I admit it didnt do much for me.
BUT
This final image along with the short yet straight to the point story really did it for me !
excelent work man :thumbsup:
especially on the emotion expressed by the characters ! :applause:
