Hello!

Not too sure what I'm going to do this time. I am sure I'm going to try to complete this challenge! Last time I quit due to some personal issues giving me a total lack of time. Nevermind, I'm here to stay this time!

SPECTACULAR?

hmmm.. so open ended again:eek:. What is spectacular? explosions?.. scale?... incredible sights?... who knows, it's all down to personal appeal, I suppose. If I can distill an image featuring all of these images, then I might be on to a winner!

maybe a huge meteorite heading towards a paradise with lots of cute paradisians helplessly staring up at their imminent fate.

or, a huge tower, miles high. looming over the clouds below.

A vehicle of some kind freeze framed during an incredible stunt.

Ideas, ideas.. I'm going to do some sketches over the next few days to see what comes up. In the meantime I'll guess I'll keep day-dreaming!

OK! I know what I'm doing now!!

Picture a huge canyon in the sunset. In the canyon, and sprawling to the tops of the cliffs is a vast city. Massive statues dominate the skyline. Buildings of an almost alien architecture flood and choke the plains of a black and poisoned river.

Here lies mankind 20,000 years ahead of now. 21st century man would not feel at home here. The landscape - changed through great tectonic shifts, the dust scarred through long-ago bombs of a long forgotten battle.

Earth is on the brink of destruction. After many setbacks in history,- war, famine and natural-distasters, the unimaginable is about to occur. The death of a comet....

I've scribbled some layouts, etc. I have such a great mental picture of this. I could almost touch it! I'm off now to stick all my layers together now and will post what the composition will look like, later tonight.

see ya later!!

This is the overall layout for the scene. Notice the bridge over the canyon incorperates a statue of a figure pulling a rope over his shoulder.- This represents mans historic struggles.

Very cool concept, I had a similar idea that I scratched. I really look forward to seeing more.

I agree that the contest is very open ended and up to your interpretation...

A couple of suggestions, if you are going with a landscape, widen the image considerably. One of the points they made in the description made it sound like excitement is important to this contest. It is very tough to do that in a normal 8x10 box. The idea I am playing around with is very landscape based, I am concerned that the image will come across less than spectacular if I don't use every tool at my disposal...

Another quick idea, give it some human interest, show a person or two in a way that relates to the viewer...

I really like your concept.

Hehe, we seem to think along a similar vein. Maybe I should rethink mine, lol. It's difficult to conjure a spectacular idea ... even more difficult to bring it to realization. Good stuff, though, can't wait to see more.

Hamma, I agree that the image should be more on the 16:9 side.- After all it is 'landscape', eh?

I might put a ledge in a forground layer with some people pointing/running. maybe also a small chunk of the comet hitting the ground would be quite spectacular!

ChristianHammer

Yeah like the comet chunk hitting, maybe a few really small ones... Gives it the sense of urgency...

I've carved some cliffs for the canyon and I've been mucking around with sunsets. None of this is a final model, I'm just getting all the layout good.

Wow, you move quick. Looks good. I think it would be cool to have the sun just about to dissapear over the horizon. It could almost be symbolic of the the sun setting on the city just before it's completely destroyed.

I like what you've done so far, but if you were to place the bridge somewhere in the middle (which is where it looks like it's going to go) then you would almost be blinded by the glare of the sun and not see it very clear. I know you said that the sunset isn't final, but also think of the composition as well. IMO, I would place the camera closer to the bridge (which is your main point of interst) and give the composition some type of perspective at a very low angle looking up at the enormous spectacular bridge, with the city behind it. Currently the bridge is very perpendicular to the camera and the horizon line is just about half way. You should want to work on the rule of thirds.

A slightly taller format. I've made the cliffs a little steeper in places. I've also moved the sun.

I definately think the taller format works better. I also like the slightly darker colors better in that one too. Looks like it's going to be a good one. Keep it up!

Thankyou, everyone

I find it easier to get an idea of what I'm going to do by doing these very rough sketches, just to get the shape of what things are going to look like. I didn't really have a clue what the buildings were going to look like until I commited pen to tablet. Later I'll white out some detail,do bigger sketches of the ones I like, then do final sketches ready to use as a reference for modelling and texturing.

I need to do a comet model too. Does anyone have any ideas on what they would expect one to look like? I've heard someone describe them as a dirty snowball. It would melt a little, I guess, as it was entering the atmosphere. I'm guessing that it would give off lots of vapour.

help me with your suggestoions

Borro

Well comets and meteorites are quite different, while a meteor is a big chunk of earth lol. and a comet is a big chunk of ice with probably some iron and other chemical elements :). So if you want to do a comet you should think of something very reflective and a bit refractive... and burning hahaha. It would be a challenge to do it because you would have to do a trail of dust chunks of ice and steam... so a comet is very complicated to do. Well anyway I like your concept looks really cool and the whole idea is cool. :) Modeling looks nice so far :) and I;m sure i'll look as good to the end :). Keep it up and good luck.
