Ok.This is the moment I'v been waiting for.
I want to send BIG THX to whole comunity:wavey:,cos the last challenge brought me an opportunity to work for television company.
It is a solid start in the 3d industry(motion graphics in vizrt).but I want to go further, and grow even more in some 3d cg direction..

Im so happy to participate in another cg challenge and to spend some time in this great place.
I wish you guys good luck, and lots of fun trough this challenge.
Seeya soon!!!

I was showering myself with data and informations about our goal in this challenge, and I think I already have an idea.

I think,,,my spectacular theme is going to capture ,,,,,,mmmmmmghhhhmmmmmmm
DINOSAURS! ! !

HHHAHAHAHAHAAHAAA.

It is going to be the image I kinda thinked about quite some time now,,but newer actually
satt down and made it,luckely.

Imagine a scene that show's us big,,I mean BIG animals passing trough scenery, leaving huge clouds of dust behind them.Air filled with dust and loud animals raoaring.
A chaos and harmony at the same time.
And maybe in the background, somekind of cause for all this mess, perhaps a meteor hit,or
big fire,,or something third...
I think this is going to be my interpretation of spectacular.
Im going for the sketches now.I know we have lots of the time on our hands but,,,
dont want the last minute rush like i had in M&S.

This is the first sketch.
I want to try to create a kind of image that when u look at it,,,seems like one from wildlife magazines, only with dinosaurs in it.
And further more,,I think I'l try to position dinosaurs coming towards us,,so that directly behind them we see the possible cause for they'r frantic run.
Off for some more sketching.

Hi guys.

6foot5 hope to meet your expectations dude.

calisto hey gerla,,,what u'r up to,,,another 2d or this time were going for 3d realm.
Cant wait to see your work,,if U decide to compete.

overcontrast yws, acording to fosile foundings they have my man..

stripe this is a species named Seismosaurus.Paleontologis have never found whole skeleton, but based on what they found,,this animal was pretty big.
As they clame,,cca 40 meters in lenght and to me,,incredible 60 tons,,,sooo.

And the name means quake dinosaurus,,,So,,imagine a herd of these animals on a stampede.
Ground shake.

Mr Micro26 I love dinosaurs eversince jurassic park,,maybe one of the main reasons for my 3d ambitions.

ar LutiK,, hope not to exceed my skills this time :)

monsitj,,will do,hey we still need to finish D&D,,hahaha,,,

Yongkiat it is ok,,,but need to work it trough,,,it probabaly wont keep this form.

gpepper this is just rough aproximation,,I should giv bit more effort to it and make better and clearer sketch.

This is wip for detail sketch
of something I want to achieve.
Not so shure of anything at the time.
But anyway,,the scene is presenting
numbeer of dinosaurs going one direction and leaving big dust behind,,in background,,we will be able to see big
Mountain,,rocky wall filled with cracks and with lava fall,so instead water I'l put lava,,and this lava falls down into river or something,,making river into huge cloud of steam and smoke..
I'l try to make precatastrophic scene.
We will see if I make it.

Im just not shure about the format and setup of the scene,,dont know how to put dinosaurs in it,,,I would like to show more of it.I'd like to make the closer dinosaur more visible,,I dont know.

Very nice idea Damir BUT i would tell you to reconsider about the front dinosaur taking up so much space in the image... I seem to be concentrating on it when i look in the image and forget everything else...

AIR
09-13-2005, 04:08 PM
icedeyes,,that is exactly what bothers me.id like to put him in certain distance, away from the camera, from the viewer,,but I'm afraid that I'l loose effect of his size,,,I need to work on the perspective here,,to make clear emphasis on the scale and greatnes of the animal we look at.

And than again to have enough space for bacground and other animals.

Geeeee:rolleyes:  I just dunno.

Thats awesome AIR good to see some zspheres :) Looking good. as jamesMK said Just needs some volume. The general workflow I go and maybe you can try is build your zsphere cage, Play with preview and keep tweaking till you get a good base cage. Then from there you can leave the mesh divided at 2 once you convert from zphere's to your mesh. That way its still low, then from there set your brush to 0 so you can just pull points and then rough out again in your base mesh and once your low mesh is looking solid start to divide the mesh rough out your form and then when you can't go no more divide and rough and keep this process until your model is looking good.

Anyway,,I was carried by thoughts reding some data regarding seismosaurus.

"The remains of this animal include vertebrae, partial pelvis, chevrons, ribs and indicate it was one of the largest animals ever. Size estimates range from 40 to 50 metres"
They also say,,Seismosaurus was probabaly 20 to 25 meters tall, including neck, and weighted up to 100 tons or even more.

I would say just moving that second dino far back to the right of the compo to free up some space in the middle of the compo. That dino is taking up alot of that space which makes it seem compact, your call though AIR, great models so far though!

and I really care for your opinions,it helped me alot during last challenge,,and there is no reason why wouldn't it help me again.
And I agree with idea of pushing some of animals bit further from the camera.
Anyway I must get this done good in order to continue with it.

everything starts falling apart.

Here is some more, but another format.
it is horizontal compo.
Behind animals I would lie to put somekind vulcanic activity or something like that,,dont know yet.
i was even thinking of making these large animals like background for smaller dinosaur species,,
like big legs and belly of seismosaurus and more of them in background and
under them smaller dinos trying to stay alive and not get stomped by theese giants, and lot of dust,
Frenzy atmosphere,,just cant complete
the circle.

JamesMK.Next last one is good option,I dont want them to far from the camera, atleest one of them should be closer,to giv accent to they'r size. And also should think about environment to,,some objects sorrounding dinos,to giv even better feeling of proportion and scale to this animals, like tree trunks lying on ground, somekind of plants, and maybe puddles of water.I was thinking of putting them in present world,in a street, but that is,I dont know.
I wanna stay close to the ground.

Great work, your dinos are well laid off in the first and the second one. In the first one, it is more like your concept sketch, you have the feeling to follow all these dinosaurs, and in the second one, there is a feeling of being really among all of them. Maybe because of the dino 's neck on the foreground, the point of view gives the feeling you're a tiny creature in front of huge and, well, spectacular animals.
However it was a good idea to test different points of view, but the problem of the last three compositions is because of the POV, too high maybe.

beelow
09-19-2005, 08:39 PM

gardogg
09-21-2005, 06:43 AM
I'm going to have to agree with monsit. To make the dinos look extra big, their wrinkles need to be extra small to give a sense of the animals grand scale with respect to the small details they have. Also, out of curiosity, why don't you render the model you made in zbrush in max? You said you just applied it as a displacement map. Is this the best way to render? I have very little experience with zbrush which is why I ask you this. I read somewhere that some people just render the entire high poly mesh that they made in zbrush in max... as opposed to making a displacement map.

Great job so far. I'm really enjoying the progress!

U create low poly cage in z brush, than you make subdivision amount you need, and add details.

also export displacement and then you work in max wih low poly but in renderer it appears with all beautyfoul details. Amazing stuff.

Hi people.
This is my inspiration tab.
I've been inspired to do something like this, involving dinosaurs, cos of other great artists arround the globe.
Here are examples of Mark Hallet's mastery in paloart, aswell as Raul Martin.
The sketch was made by another artist, dont know his name, but it looks spectacular to me,and she made me thinking of perhaps changing the original concept for the image, but I'l think about it.The photo of an elephant is my own, during my visit to zoo.
I want my dinosaurs to look beautyfoul as those from Mark and Martin and real as this elephant I have photographed.
I'm modest,arent I ;)

Hi guys.

I need to express my self.
Now when I have spare time to work on this challenge I have lost motivation and ambition.
And the main reason is this.
I still havent recieved award for Master and servant.
So that fact kinda puts me down.

I will probabaly finish this image, but,I think not for the challenge, but for myself, and all the great cg people here, and in the end my portfolio.
Until and if I recieve this reward atall i might change my atitude,I also feel bad,cos this fact
affect me in this way,I would like that this situation can't influence my creativity so much, but there it is.
Seeya arround guys.Thx for the supportivity.

I still havent recieved award for Master and servant.

Mmmmmh... damir... tsss tsss...

Is not a good reason... I know your actual feeling about that... it's totally normal... during 2 months, you have worked as a fool on your project... during these moments... all your energy, all your spare time, all your thoughts are for your project, for this incredible experience, to learn, to share... and often to loose... but you make a error mate... because finally you win... I know that... I loose often... but I win some skills, and much friends... and if they are only these 2 reasons... it's yet very good... without forget the passion... also important (third reason... but we can more easily...).
Me too, sometimes, I've less motivation (today for example... also tired)... but I must continue, for me, and also for all girls and guys who support our work, our creation... by respect. Very important...

Then, your passion must be stronger than this deception... life is empty of deception... but your art, you take it in your hand, in your mind... I see in the previous challenge all progress you made during it... I can say : impressive ! to finish by something awesome... You can be proud of you...

Final result is other thing... judges must have different sensitive... that remove nothing of your talent and creativity... you have gold in your hand... I have the proof as the beginning of this actual challenge, the work you made on your beasts is incredible and your imagination without limits... you must continue it... the award, is really to finish the challenge, not the prices... (I always have my old PIII... no BOXX, and I continue... hahahaha)
...prices is other thing, and if that will be interesting to win something, I think it's secondary compared to the genial mood all together, not ?

I don't know if I'm a good exemple... but I always try to participate, however, I have lot of work actually... more of 12 hours in my job... I've a rich family life... after my work, I must occupy myself of my two sons, the exercises of the old one, feeding-bottle and bath for the baby... after, the evening with the family together... then, I must juggle to find couples of minutes to work on my project... not easy, but the passion of picture is stronger than all...

Then my friend... stop your low motivation... put the power "ON"... and go... finish your project before the deadline, please... (hewever you have times) for us, and especially for you... to be proud to finish "your" masterpiece.

I forget something... do you know why I like to participate to these challenges, here or elsewhere ? in first, it's of course the passion... and immediately in second, because we're exactly in the same situation than in real work... imposed subject and precise deadline... very important as training... and as sometimes, we can meet some problems with difficult clients... and there, they are the judges the clients. As the real life !

Now, I've finished, and I hope for that you will change of opinion, it's too hard for me to write so many English things, then, a little pity for me...

Go Damir...

Air, I don't really know you, you surely don't know me, but I know this situation too, and I post here only to say you a thing I never say too loud : your master and servant piece is one of some pieces (a few really) which motivate me for suscribe this challenge now.
More than the reality of fact, this is a good exercice in "real situation" it's sure, my motivation is to put my modest piece near yours.
You can't give up like this.

I changed the whole concept,although I
didnt have something solid before.
Only thing that bothers me,is this,,
The new way reminds me of Master and servant composition.
I plane to make big parent dinosaur protecting his young one,and bunch of carnivorous dinosaurs attacking this smaller animal, encirclyng theese two herbivours.
And in the bg other animals passing and
watching this drama.
Dunno.
I like the idea, but it reminds me of M&S,and that bothers me bit.
Am I so linear or what?

I really love this new idea and I don't think the composition style consistency you seem to lean toward is a bad thing! Nothing wrong with similarities to the prior challenge. This new concept is VERY powerful - one of my favorites that I have seen.

Crits: The tail on the smaller dinosaur is too narrow at the bend. On the big dinosaur, on the arm to the viewer's right, the shoulder looks too pointed (compared to the one on the left).

oh man! dont' know what's goin on here until check your previouse post , and I'm very glad to see you back in ! about your reward , just keep email them, I'm sure they will respond , and please don't quit , it's simple that the lost motivation is normal for artist ,and me too , but , just like lemog said , there are no community that support and help you improve your skill like here , and you are a great artist , your master servant entry is my favourite ,and it's sad to see friend that work together can't finish his job, but anyway it's up to you ,

about new compostion , yes , I think of your m s entry too , but nothing wrong! my suggestion is i like the old one:twisted:I think with long neck of creature ,it's hard to make the composition look good , but if you can , it will be very great challenge! keep it up mate!

monsitj, hey pal, congratulation on finishing the deathfall challenge pal,you did nice image there.
I was so dissapointed, when I realised I wont be able to finish my,cos I had lot of work at my job.

THX to Lemog and some other great cg people here.Thx guys.

Lemog,Hello, the guru is allways welcomed here.im glad you also feel the same way others do.
that mean's less time spending on the concept itself and more time on serious work.
seeya pal.

JR.BRAZ,,hey dude,One more blessing my concept,thx.
Yeah,I intend to make few carnivour dinosaurs,I'm second thinking between allosaurus and carnotaurs, carnotaurs are my favs, and have made them in history, brother in blood image show they'r appearance, but I'd made them bit different for the challenge i think,
cos the last I have made is somewhat unusable, for few reasons.
One of the bigest is,we're not allowed using prefabricated models.
other reason is,the mesh continuity is real mess, and Im learning to keep my mesh as clean as possible, and it's kinda easy thanks to z brush.

OK,I now leave for day or so and be back with more.

Greetings everyone.:wavey:

No more crashing when I render big scenes. No more crashing when I subdivide models over 1,5 mil. or higher poly count in max.

Hi folks.
This is my first, ever, texturing in Zbrush.
And I think to my self, what the heck
have i done up until now.
Method I have used here:took small portion of skin sample from an elephant photo I made in zoo, aplyed it on the mesh in z brush, than have cloned it arround. And after all this, grabed my tablet and started messing with it.
All I want to say, texturin in zbrush is pure fun, beside few head headaches in understanding texture resolution.

Cant wait to texture it whole.
Any c&c is welcomed.
seeya.

I would personally like to see a color that is either green or brown of some sort. Jurrasic Park didn't have any grey dinosaurs I don't think... I don't know. I just feel like this gray scale texture is less interesting than a lizard colored one would be.

Agree with garddog... that certainly easyer to appreciate at 100% with colors is same time... but we can already appreciate the precision of your work of texture... really impressive...

...and congrats for the extra-ram... that's permit you to do more, and more...

Hello.
More of texturing to continue later this day.
THX for c&c's,I was thinking of making whole scene kinda grayscale.
But whatever I make, this is firstly
bump and dislpace information wright now.Coloring,if I choose to make colored piece, will certainly be noticable.
I was also thinking, nobody actually can tell how dinosaurs were colored, unlike the fact that paleontologist's know for a fact how theese animals might have looked, based on they'r bones and skin patterns they left for us in stone.
So,I was going from that assumption, choosing greyscale image, and leaving for viewer to decide and question the coloring of theese animals.

I'm interesed what do you people think of this.
Seeya soon.

AIR

There is no need for photoshop, more I use Z brush I'm coming to conclusion that this is ultimate tool for modeling texsturing and whatever else.
U can add color in Zbrush just as you can in photoshop, not only that,it gives you countless
other options in mixing brushes and alphas.
You should giv it more of your atention, with your studiosity,You'd become a master in no time. But You already know some of theese things.
