Greetings ye eager challengers. No idea what I am going to do for this challenge. At first I thought Spectacular could mean almost anything, but thinking about it, it is maybe not that open-ended, especially when you figure in the Iconic bit. Here are a few 5-minute thumbs I did whilst pondering this conundrum. Just thoughts, really.

Anyway, good luck to everyone.

(I keep getting SQL errors on submit, so please bear with me whilst I try again...)

Just found that it will not submit if you include any single / double quotes in the comments field, hence my weird grammar! :) Hope that is fixed soon.

Thanks, all, I'll post some more tomorrow. I've thought of an idea but what's the rush - 3 months is a long time :)

mybutterflyiris - "Also, are you really going to go with a square?"

:) Nope! It makes them easier to display is all. At this stage I'm just looking at colour and motion - composition and everything else comes later.

Well, this is a test thumb for the general idea I have decided on. It depicts a historic moment in the (future) sport of extreme flower picking, when the reigning galactic champion (name to be decided) managed to gather a magic dozen poison star orchids within the alloted 300 seconds duration.

Each team is made up of two persons, one sits in the craft and the other hangs underneath by a harness. At speeds of around 200kph, the pilot must navigate the craft so that his team-mate skims low enough over the ground to pick the requisite flowers, the type of which differ depending on the level of competition, and the host planet, of course.

Full rules to follow ;) And a concept sketch too, of course.

use like helicopter type rotors, not as long blades though... like horizontal

Thanks for commenting, people.

sh@ke, duddlebug - I'm envisaging this last one as a simple composition with huge amounts of definition and detail to really get the idea of size across. It's my favourite so far but I'll keep on experimenting

Poshspice - Yep, Painter all the way! Well, until the colour correction right at the end, but I use Painter for everything else.

Hi Simon,

I like the current sketch very much. The perspectve angle looks promising. A lot of action... - could become a spectacular scene. But on the other hand its very nice to watch the vast space of sketch 3. Hmm.... difficult to choose.:) Be pleased > great sketches so far.

Another one. A mile-high fossil of an alien creature is discovered on a remote planet. It died shielding itself from attack but the question is... what attacked it? ;)

Made a few changes to link foreground and background and therefore increase the impression of scale. Changed the theme a bit, it's now going to be centred around an entire city built in the fossilised hulk of a long-dead alien.

I reckon I'll go ahead with this one. I think I'd actually do better in the comp if I went with the hut / planet one, but this is more of a challenge for me so I'll stick with it.

I like this one, Simon, it's a good choice. Very dramatic.

Only suggestion I'd make is about the camera and the perspective: This creature is HUGE, but the camera is placed to that we're looking at it straight on, in the eye(s) as it were, as if we're that large, too. Perhaps it would emphasize the scale more to bring the camera down some, to maybe a more human's-eye point of view?

Anyhow, just a suggestion. Good luck with it!

This is just cool man. I can imagine myself actually being at the site of this alien carcass, and it's just amazing.

I think your first story adds up better, where a couple of space explorers finds this on some planet they're probing or something. If you build a city around it, or put a tour group in the picture, it just makes the idea seem like it's possible and practically normal to see these kind of things in the world you're portraying, kinda tones down the "spectacular" in it. Just an opinion though. Keep em' comin'!

awesome concept man! I think it looks really big, so no worries here. But I would consider about the croud down there. On previous sketche, where u had just 2 persons on the right side, worked better I think. The emotionals of the discovery were shown better that way. If u put too many ppl next to the bug, than it looks like it is a museum or something, and all the excitement goes away... it was already found and the moment of the surprice gone away long time ago. I hope it makes sence everything Im writing here, other wise just ignore my post :)

Thanks for the comments and ideas. I liked the "discovery" scenario a bit better too, the only problem with it is that there's nothing beside the alien (i.e. people) to give an idea of scale. Perhaps trees or rocks would do it... I'll have a think.

There comes a time in every challenge where it's necessary to consider white gorillas. So, here's mine.

I'm thinking it fits the challenge better than the alien, although it's so rough you probably can't see what it is yet (cue Rolf Harris impressions). I'll refine it and see what happens.

There is definitively some Franck Frazetta (hope am not mispelling here.. :D) spirit here! Really cool! Now - when you think about it, a white (albino) gorilla is surely spectacular but at the same time, why not even try another color ?! Or even something else than hair/fur ? Genetic mutation?? :) - Finally, your productivity is more than impressive!! Bravo!!

Oooh, yeh, good point. We're a week into the challenge and i haven't drawn one monkey yet. What am i thinking!?

The gorilla's great. Maybe not as spectacular as the big fossilized fella just yet, but i'm sure it could be. You seem to get the light and colours so right in these sketches.

Fab!

09-10-2005, 02:49 PM
Baron, all your ideas seem to be pretty spectacular :) i'd like to see the discovery of the bug more than gorrila, just because it reminds me of nausicaa which is great and the gorrila reminds me of the film version of congo, which is crap!:)

I'll submit this as my line-art (bit arbitary really). I'm tempted to go with this rather than the alien just cos there are so many entries that are relying on sheer scale that I don't really want to add one of my own. Besides, you can't go wrong with a monkey (unless you're a hunter...)

Hi,
The pict is promissing, but it would be more spectacular if you add a character very close to us, running away for ex. Right now there's too much distance between us and the action, and in consequence, the interaction between the scene and the spectator is weaker : the spectacular sensation comes precisely from this interaction.
Keep it up !

BaronImpossible
09-10-2005, 05:37 PM
NOOB! - Right, I get you. Yes, I'm using Painter. I probably won't use any blend tools for a while yet (just smaller and smaller brushes). When I do, it's just a normal (acrylic) brush on 0% resat, with varying opacity and loads of grain. Can't see me using it much here, other than on the ape's body before I put the fur on. Or is it hair? Anywhow... :)

gra7 - I understand what you're saying now. I might make the shirt "stretch" a bit more. His position... well, he's pretty tense, let me tell you :) Thanks for the crit, though, I'll take note and make some changes later.

BaronImpossible
09-10-2005, 05:41 PM
Arctis - Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I did try that first off (though I never posted it). What I found was that the gorilla was being a little overshadowed when I really want it to be the focus. Maybe the positioning was wrong. Not sure ATM, I'll give it some thought. I appreciate the crit :)

Made a few changes, partly based on what people've said. Tilted the canvas (for added dynamism - I hope!), made Mr Looks-Like-Harrison-Ford-But-Isn't bigger, added more fallen tree-trunks leading into the picture, made the bloke in the air a bit less "posed", moved the guy on the ground.

There'll be some debris flying about later, too, although I don't know what precisely.

Better? Worse? Can't tell any difference?

Great progress matey :D

One thing though, The man the gorilla is holding looks a little peculiar. I can see the gorillas thumb next to the mans neck. But by the look of the man, the gorilla is holding more around his torso or the shoulder. I think the clothing garment should be more... pulled. er... we should see more of the mans back I think. And maybe he's torso should be more vertical. I think... not sure about this :S

Looking forward to the final result ;)

About this latest concept:

I think it looks great, its interesting, the color and lighting are nice.. I think it could be a bit more interesting composition wise, if the guy in the foreground wasnt directly below the white ape. Instead if there were a guy being thrown off to the left foreground, it might help the composition break up, and give a bit more interesting action to the image.

Just a thought. Nice work

Hey Simon, love the look of the latest concept. The ape really blasts ot from all the green. If you're sticking with this, I'd say the body language of the front, erm, hunter could maybe be a little more urgent, but you're obviously in the stages of working this sort of stuff out. The other guys are nicely posed though, especially the guy hanging from the ape. will you be adding all kinds of broken branches/leaves/ debris flying to the scene to add the impression that the ape has burst in on them?

Having said that, I do kinda agree with Ninja, I really loved the thumb you did with the bug husk, in particular the one where the cars were speeding past it. The contradiction between the two subjects was quite... spectacular, and also because my first impression was that this civilisation simply continued their everyday life around this amazing fossil without paying it any heed. There was something about that that made me stop and take a breath.

But either way, your paintings will be spectacular, can't wait to see where you go with it.

Your gorilla scene is absolutely impressive & the progress so fast!...
One quick comment - and as someone else suggested it with a "beer belly" - I believe the light at the top of the belly is a little to bright and/or contrasted with the muscles above: it makes it look like the gorilla is a pregnant "she" :D

Hey Simon!

Seems to be coming on just fine - composition, lighting and drama are great, and the idea is interesting.

I wonder if it would have been better painted at a lower angle - so the Gorilla would be towering above the viewer - maybe partially in shadow - silhouetted against the sky/canopy...

Ehm... I guess that's not much help now... I was just trying to think how it might be tackled differently...

..maybe I should just shut up and let you get on with it... ;)

He looks like he is just climbin' over stuff, rather than escaping the brute ape, Maybe if you have leaping over the root rather than have it look the way it is, I would like to see more action in him that is all if it is not already too late or you just want it to look like that, no?

MDN67, Overchord, enialadam, ogar555 - Thanks :)

beelow - Thanks for the comment. Well, he's just jumped over the log (that's why he's holding his hat :) ). Maybe he could do with a bit more movement. What I'll probably do is finish off the detail next week, leave it a couple of months whilst I do some other concepts and then come back to it.

I really like where this is heading. The composition is dynamic, yet you could work out the overall values some more, it could get a bit muddy. The idea behind this is brilliant, I totally dig the albino design and the whole athmosphere. Keep up the great work.

-tolga- - Thanks for that praise :)

renderwhite - Thanks

Mecha Hate Chimp - For sure, any monkey-based painting is fine by me. If only one of the prizes could be a monkey, oh, I'd be so happy! Cheers.

beelow - Thanks. Yep, I intend to do at least two more images after this, from concept to completion, then choose which one to submit right at the end. (Still got about 4 or 5 hours left on this yet, though)

[REPEAT MODE: ON] Great artwork:thumbsup: and great painting style [REPEAT MODE: OFF] :)

I have the impression the scene needs some more "atmosphere" > I mean something like haze or humidity cause it looks too clean dry for a rainforest scene currently.
Maybe the image has a bit too much the same illumination in the whole forest. You could add more mysterious/adventuresome touch in showing unbalanced lightning coming through the trees above. Just some suggestions.

The thing about spectacular isnt the subject its how the subject is presented. Even the most mundane thing in life becomes spectacular from the right view point. We see a simple thing like a tree in the front yard and we go oh, its just a tree. But for a baby new to the world looking up from the ground at a giant green growth from the ground it crawls upon this tree is spectacular. So in my oppinion making something spectacular is just about re-introducing something so interestingly that it seems as if we, the viewers, have just been born. Which brings me to my point about your gorilla image. It is spectacular- almost- in my humble oppinion. What it needs is to make the man in the foreground show an emotion that helps us identify with him. He needs to be so dynamic in his pose and facial expression that we too feel as if this is a frighteningly new experience. Thats all your beautiful image needs to be truly spectacular. Again, just my oppinion. Hope whichever image you finally choose to use, it turns out at least as great as this one.

I haven't read all the post, so this may be redundant...my apologies.

First off, you work is amazing and it definitely stands out; however (crit), is the ape pregnant? The stomach seems excessively bulbous, like he's about to burst. Besides that, this is one of my favorite pieces. Great Work!

Fahrija - Thanks. Yep, I'll work on the sunlight and textures

Ste7en - Cheers for the in-depth comments. I do see what you mean, but I think I'm going to stick with this guy, the fearless white hunter. Also, it is strange but if you look at photos of real disasters (or freeze-frame them on TV - yes, I'm sad like that) it's amazing how unafraid people look, and how different their stance is to what you'd expect. I always find that blatant expressions end up too cartoony, which is why I tend mostly to go for raised eyebrows or gritted teeth (and when I don't, like in a recent one, I don't like the result). Thanks again :)

danielh68 - You're right, he is a fat bastard. I might reduce his belly later. On the other hand, fat monkeys are great, aren't they?

Lady Medusa - Cheers! I haven't looked at this for a while, hopefully I'll get around to it later this week.

Squibbit - :thumbsup::)

kboss - Ha! :D Yeah, I very much doubt I'll use this, but I'll finish it off and probably stick it in my gallery. Loads of time left yet...

Managed to spend another couple of hours on it. The first thing I did was overwrite the last PSD with a small JPG (doh!) so spent most of the time redoing stuff. I'm tempted to just tidy it up a bit now, slap my sig on and get started on the next one. All good fun :)

Hey there :)
I still really like your theme. Its looking good also.

I'd rather see you doing a lot of layer work,
really getting into your painting, and taking it really far.
What about the wonderful translucent stuff you can do with photoshop,
and all the vivid colours?
Why not keep going until its photo realistic? Don't give up on it?

That's my bit anyway.

Cheers.

FrozZT, Genesisa, Hof, stefan, 9mmParavalerium, xric7 - Thanks :)

Jose Pardo - Yep, it's looking a bit flat. Hopefully my last update sorted that? :)

Drakula - You'd look terrible too with a 10 foot monkey on your tail ;)

Spin99 - Thanks for the comment. I'm not really a layer person but I did experiment with some more daring colours. I will put some more detail in but there's not much more I want to do now, seeing as this probably won't be my entry. BTW - I'm using Painter, not PS :)

Simon this is looking great...loving the detail.

I have one suggestion, I think the chest maybe needs some skin with the hair being finer in that area....maybe some nipple.

Also maybe the hair on top of the head sticking up...you know like a cats hair on its back when they are angry....gggrrr :)

:arteest: am enjoying your process

very nice progress! I especially dig the warm color light in the right side of the pic. Really nice contrast to the left side. I really dont have much to say here, except that I'd really love to see a slightly bigger version and maybe some more life around (bugs and birds.. u know, all that chaos must scared them away). Just a suggestion :) otherwise looks very cool!

Yes I much prefer the new colours.

I think you maybe introduced some complimentaries,
which definitely adds more drama imo :)

Also another thing you could try is look at the desaturated version,
and look at contrast.
Since the theme is spectacular I really think contrast,
both light/dark and colours can only add to the final results.

Cheers.
