Takes a deep breath....maybe I'll get through this one and learn alot on the way.

I already have an idea of what I want to do, but who knows, I may think of something else later....
alright idea time:
There is a science lab somewhere where they have been performing experiments on animals and organic life for decades. Most of these animals are deformed and have pretty much gone insaine do to all their treatments. Their is only so far you can push nature before it pushes back. The science lab goes chaotic as the subjects are loose and ransacking the place... those researchers really should start to run right about now.

not too sure about alot of stuff...like format, background chaos, etc...

welcome to the challenge Melody :)

i would suggest going for a wider canvas. then you have the chance to show more perspective.

i really like your theme and am curious how this is going to come along :)

Trying to get the anatomy proportions worked out on the figure and here is a lighting idea.
The only thing I am pretty sure about is that I think I want the focal point on one of the lab techs and the 2 headed dog on the table
critique much appreciated

mybutterflyiris,

I like the first comp better ~ if you had stuff in the bkgrd, at nice diagonals and such, this might make a cool composition! The figure definitely needs a longer torso (more pelvis), but the arms and hands look really good, so definitely keep their expressiveness! :) Lighting~wise, the more contrast you have in certain areas, the more interesting your picture will be. Look forward to more updates! :)

Cheers, :)

ok, this is it for tonight...i've got to go to sleep... anyways, I started playing with the composition...The one with all the color is somewhat color coated (tan things people, green things organic chaos)

little update... changed species of attacking animal several times...still didn't like the position. Now it's a two headed coyote and I think the animals attacking from the ground are lions?...still deciding really
suggestions?

Those kinds of animals I'd expect to see either outside, or in cages that look like natural environments. Perhaps the scene would feel better to you outdoors with the broken lab nearby? From the description you gave, I have a mental picture of your scene being just outside a destroyed door with some ripped-open enclosures fading into a forest or jungle setting.

Nifty idea, btw!

NOOB!

i agree with lokki.

great concept btw!

elmasfeo
09-10-2005, 10:58 PM
hi! nice concept, I like it!
I think I liked more the two previous sketches than the last one...there was more space for the action in the background IMO... Your last sketches have very good sense of movement, it looks promising...
and, well, I like it being indoors, I think it may look more chaotic that way...I don't know...

mybutterflyiris

I'm going to continue to play around with some stuff...thanks for commenting.
I have the scene inside because it makes the people trapt...One of my "background people" is infact trying to get out the door and can't... I feel that if I put them outside I would loose part of the narrative and there would not be a reason for the animals to be attacking the lab technitians. Plus, I was planning on having mutant plants around as well..which I don't think would work outside. However, perhaps I just need to change narratives... I will definately consider it.
Oh and their will be mountains of chaos..wherever I go with this..even if I am being lazy and not putting it all in my concept sketches...

Hello all... Just wanted to say that I have a new concept...I think... sketches will come soon.

ChrisThatGuy
09-13-2005, 07:24 PM
I like it. I think it would be more dynamic if someone was getting attacked in the foreground, with the animal jumping on him towards the viewer, so that there's more of a sense of danger.

Nice work.

Alright...first two sketches for new concept.
The title of this will be "In the hall of the Mountain King"
Perhaps, not the most original thing on the planet, but hey neither is an airplane crash... anyways, this just seems more me-like.
I'm still working on the story in written form and will post it later. Pretty much the consice version is Mountain King...aka lion...king of all beasts holds court.
One more thing. In the second composition study, there are two "beasts" fighting (colored yellowish)

mybutterflyiris
09-14-2005, 05:31 AM
Ok...and just like that...here's some juicy-ness.

The Meeting in the hall of the moutain king is a spectacular occurrance that only happens ever so often. Once at the beginning of time, the hall was prestine and always in session, but with the rise of mankind it has fallen into disaray along with the earth. The court is held mainly to deal with global matters and major disputes.

So... just trying to put in some of the major figures and such..figureing out where they go, and trying to get the scaling right... *note: many more animals to come...tons really

suggestions appreciated

Hi Melody. Thanks for replying to my thread. Really appreciate the advice. Looking great!! Will be definitely keeping an eye on this one. The only advice I would have is to maybe watch the composition... with so much in the image it might be easy to accidently croud it. I really like the sketch with the other animals! Seems so open and lively. I think the last image seems a little dark on the right... maybe just the sketch... but kinda makes the image seem a little dark too. Love what you have so far though! Good luck!

Hey butterfly thanks for your comments on my thread. Shame the 1st idea got canned it sounded very interesting. The new picture is looking good though. Really like your lion, very nice indeed. Only thing i can suggest is to widen up the hall/cathedral a touch, looks a bit confined for a grand audience of a king. i'll keep checking back for sure!

Not a huge difference here, but on the second one I have expanded the wall out to the right. ...and well the lighting isn't quite the same, but that's just cause i'm lazy about makeing them the same.

TheFirstAngel
09-21-2005, 01:19 AM
Wow Melody, that lion is awesome! the expanded scene gets a bit heavy witht the light n dark area ballance atm, a solution could be to crop a bit of the lower area to ballance it out or ... uhm maybe its just the light. the unexpanded version looks more ballanced to me. :) of courtse thats just my pont of view. best luck and keep it up!

ChrisThatGuy
09-27-2005, 02:30 PM
I like the expanded version better, but maybe it needs some darker shadows on the ground behind the pillars to give that area more depth. Right now it jumps forward a bit and look a little flat. Nice work so far.

elmasfeo
09-27-2005, 03:26 PM
I would choose the expanded scene just because it wouls leave more space for animals...

all those roots and branches between the ruins look great... how about making the pillars' shadows a bit less tilted? ...it looks as it's going to be full of great details, I'll be watching how this one develops...

Falcorr
09-27-2005, 05:42 PM
This picture is quite ambitious. That means you gotta work like crazy man. There is a lot of detail and shapes!

I dont think you should be testing out slight color changes. Rather you should be looking for what kind of shadows will there be in inside your picture.. Sharp ones? Is there a lot of ambience. What will work the right way?

Good luck!

Thank you all for your comments, they are very helpful...I'll keep them in mind as I work. I haven't had a whole lot of time this week...but here's an update. Thanks for the comments guys... when there isn't any feedback (including crits) you kind of look around, wonder, check for B.O., ...

Well, I was honestly getting a bit frustrated with it and just let it sit stewing for awhile ...now I'm back to it... no pic today, but it will come by and by... Anyways, I think that sometimes I get into too much of an analytical mode instead of just clearing my head and letting my right brain take over. And I gues one thing I am currently learning that it is a necessity to trust yourself and stop thinking too much. I think that was the cause of my frustration.

 Ug! I can't believe this. I was so proud of myself for actually having some consistent work habits on this, but I have bad saving habits... and then my evil big toe hit the power button on my computer (*not the first time this has happened)... and well, I think you get the point. Why, Oh why can't I learn from my mistakes. I also must say, this is generally the death sentence of whatever I have been working on since I generally get frustrated and unmotivated.

*Repeats over and over: perseverance

Well let's face it. There's not much hope left for this. My computer broke down over the weekend, and school is kicking my tail...I'll be out of town for most of the rest of this week, and when I come back I'll be smacked in finals....so how in the world am I suppose to finish this!?! *growls* Well, since I have worked on this for so long and gotten this far, I may try to finish this despite probably missing the due date (less some miracle occurs).... However, on the other hand, I know I'd do this so completely different if I had it to do over again... so I feel a lack of motivation if I miss the due date....

I think that the flipped version works better, coz there is that deer that is the biggest animal and point of interest in the first plan, which leads smoothly to the lion in the back, from left to the right, which is in most cases the way of reading (for books, as well as for images). Good luck in finishing ur piece! it looks great already. :)
