Here's my entry. I started working on concept this morning shortly after: eating my breakfast and making little brainstorming. I figured out a bunch of ideas how to make my piece spectacular.
I want it to be full of action ,sort of encirclement futuristic
enviroment (I had also had idea of makin middle age scene)
Spectacular scene - chase , a kind of "on the egde "situation,
and of course ...an explosion.
So it is... my hero's escape . I'll try to let the viewer feel the drama of the situation.
I hope you'll like it when done and by this time crit my wips and help me when nessesary making my little dream come true.

yep very nice and dinamic concept u got there... got a lot of potential in it... but i cant go witht eh hero being hanging on the aricraft's wings... its not looking natural.. u might reconcider the hero's position... just my 2 cents... keep it up mate.. and best of luck :thumbsup:

I cleared out a bit my idea. I would like to show more enviroment and make the scene more coherent. I added 2 characters pilot and women both helping my hero to run away .The ship will crush not directly on the pavement ( I didn't want to kill meny people ;P ) but city's "green valley" I also changed image ratio. I'm stiil thinking of more ways to make background more "intensive"

I fixed perspective. I want to show more enviroment It will help build the "right" mood. I'm still thinking of city's stylisation I don't want it to be a copy of SW or 5'th element megalopolis.

Here's a concept of the "main" ship I named it "the runner" I want it to be a mix of realistic and my imagination. I'll use chrome elements for bottom part and wings edges. and polished metal for rest. I'm still trying to figure out a good shape for front window .It looks to f16 for now.

I modeled the first version of main ship "the runner" I wanted to be a bit different from SW&CO style ships. I tried to mix machine with bird and shark. (bird so it could ;), fly shark to make it agressive) You can see it with basic material and with simple shaders. just for test. I don't know If yellow is the right choice. I don't want it to look like a cab but for now it's enought.

HI. I had a dream last night and it inspired me to put the action on the scene a little bit higher. Now it takes place above city in lower parts of clouds. I'm thinking of further changes maybe I should put the action above city's roof below layer of clouds (with some nice volumetric light out there). What do you think? Crits and opinions most welcome cheers!

I think you coud fit more action within the city streets. Just maybe little higher than medium buildings level, so you colud see rooftops of smaler buildings. This concept here (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/7927/7927_1126185690_medium.jpg) was pretty cool just place it lil higher and add one more pod above that crashed hes "wing" into the building wall and now is ricocheting like crazy. He produces a lot of somoke and debree so you could add some volume light effect :thumbsup:

Thanks Mark. I fixed perspective. Compromise ...now there are going to be both clouds and detailed city streets. Falling ship will devastate near buildings. I'm really getting the final composition...I hope. ;) Cheers.

Hi. I spent over 20 hours making faces for my heros and I think they are ready to go public and eat the crit... I used Michael Dudikoff as a reference for my hero's face, and Vin Diesel for the pilot. I'll make ears tommorow and start modeling female character (I choose Sigourney Weaver), Coments most welcome. SC

The sketches are very cool so far and the face model looks good. I just though I would point out a couple of minor issues with the face model.

The head on the upper corners should not be sticking out that much. It should be more rounded like so:


Also, the adams apple looks too narrow here. Outside of that, it looks pretty good.

I know my drawing isn't perfectly accurate but it was only meant to indicate the areas that could use some tweaking in my opinion. If you try squinting at the picture I've posted here, the top part of the head looks a lot more natural. Maybe look up some pictures of bald people and you will see the curvature of the top of the head better.

You are moving along quick! Keep it up!

Another sleepless night...I modeled ears and women's face( S Weaver ass ref ). I think they are pretty much done. Now I have to create expressions, and model rest of bodys.

thank's . I'm not sure about eyes. This render is tricky. I think it is only a matter of camera setup (here you have almost planar angle fov ~15) If you use 54 or greater everything look fine. I'll show new renders later. SC

I put bodies in right figures. I added noise and displacements on clothes cosed by wind and motion. Face muscles are deformed by wind and speed. This layer is basically done. I'll tweek it later during the finalisation stage.

The skin blowing looks pretty cool but possibly not perfectly realistic. Maybe you should look into some references of facial skin blowing to see exactly what it should look like. These look pretty good for a rough draft but I think it could be improved. Also, the head seems a little off because the head should be 5 eyes wide (1 eye separating the eyes and 1 eye on each side of the eyes) I'm not sure if that is the case here. Besides that, its starting to look good!

I tried my best it's really hard to get good g-force&wind effect references
Ofc I can build massive fan and check it on mysefe but I'm not sure if its worth risking my life - I would not win ;/... You're right it's not perfect
I'll fix the nose area and add some details but the main shape is modeled (I'm still not sure of nose area) smaller muscles will be bump mapped.

I think there are 2 misleading things camera FOV&perspective and fact that hero's eye are squinted ( or somebody else's ?? please tell) here's planar shots of heads. I think hair will solve all head size /proprtions problems too.

What do you mean by odd ? He is leaning out of the ship a bit. Maybe I should sit him a little lower and break the arm so I will do. SC

Nice, i've not seen anyone attempt to model wind blasted skin before so this'll be interesting. I'd say that for an inital mock-up things are looking very promising.

One of the big challenges for anyone doing characters in this competittion is getting emotion and dynamism into their scenes. I know it's early doors but both of these are lacking a bit at the moment. For example the pilot doesn't seem to worried about the situation even though he's flying at high speed and trying save his buddy from certain doom. He'd at least have a furrowed brow as he concentrates on flying whilst grimacing with the effort of holding on to his mate.

Just my thoughts, you've definately made good progress.

I guess I can see how difficult the face blowing thing is now... but if you look here at the pic you posted earlier:


The skin on these people's cheeks is not blowing so much that you can see the underlying skull as it is in the models that you have made. I would suggest beefing the faces back up a bit and showing the wind's affect on their faces primarily in some deformation in the cheeks and some deformation in the mouth area. The key here I would say is subtlety. I think you're doing a great job so far and have a great pace going! Good luck man!

I rebuilt the surface of the ship. I divided surface into smaller segments to make the ship look more belivable I placed over 21000 rivets all over the ship. I recived first memory warnings so it getting serious...

I know what you mean and I agree. I'll smooth or modyfy faces later after texturing them. bump and color maps make a difference then I'll see exactly what need to be modified. Raw face models are a bit "overexpressed" .I must remamber about speed, which is much higher than durind a normal sky walking. So deformations are closer to the one on the g-force pic

I created first light setup for layer 1.
The final composition of layer wouldn't differ much from what you can see here. layer 1 is 99% done. I use mix of HDR and conventional lighting. I haven't chose light angle and color yet. It's the first attempt- SC

Hi I modeled the prison ship that will crush into building. It is made of over 800 little segments. I wanted the ship's surface as relistic as possible (luckily no rivets this time). In future I will deform and explode some of this segments. I'll also model some of the interior and add details on engines etc - cheers

I know some tricks: 1. Leave your girlfriend 2. Get rid of any work job etc I promise you i's gonna work.;) but seriously. I think the is the most important is good time managment and concept just have to know what you want to achive step by step. "To do list" simple and best avalible trick around! I want to have all city modeled this month. Modeling isn't the most time consuming part of this play. The real fun starts when it comes to texturing lighting rendering and composing all that stuff together....

Gus_clifton :The final image will be like ~4000x3200px So I have to add as much details as I can. Anyway it must be spectacular musn't it?? ;). Of course I'll use LOD on this scene. Modeling single window in a far building is pointless. I'll put as much details as possible in the nearest buildings I'm planing to model hangars offices people inside etc. But first I'll make first pass of texture work to know where such details are neaded and may be visible. I'll use simple models for less visible buildings focusing on roofs .I ll also use some mate paintings for city horizon. -cheers

I added few buildings. This new layer is built of 7 mln polygons. Next I'll model third layer of buildings and the street.
I'm thinking of changing the light direction. The sun would shine from behind, opposite to what you can see now. C&C most welcome.

I modeled all main buildings in the City. All have their basic shapes now In furure I'll add extra details and texture them I'll also model some new buildings/roofs to make the city skyline look more intensive .

I shaded and textured all buildings. I made almost 110 different shaders and textures. I still teed to texture landing pads and add some details.

Hi Another part of shaders I made. You can see prison unifirm shaders ( I'll make textures in future) and shaded and textured face and hands. I worked on face expression I focused on eye area he looks more anger now I hope and he's trying to take a breath (mouth). Hair is just a sample paint !!. -cheers

HI I made sample textures for heads. I modeled a hair for woman and made textures for both heros. It's the first pass I'll add details later. I'm still working on skin shader .On this image you can see just a simple blinn shader - i want to use sss if possible- cheers

HI I made the firsta attempt on fire& smoke on prison ship. I want it to be very dense so...one problems occured. Some vital parts of the city are now barely if ever visible. I'll redesign the city a bit in next step -cheers

HI I modeled a hair for my hero. I fixed his expression he is more angry. I modeled teeth and figured out final shin shader. Now I recived that almost cartoon look I always wanted to. -cheers

Man this is looking great! The city is awesome and the ships are looking fantastic. Your hero though looks a bit "cartoonish" in front of the realism of the rest objects but I'm sure you will manage to fit him exact to the env there!

You're right ,you pointed the main problem here how to manage all those layers and make the whole image coherent- I hope I'll manage to do this right. And thank's for good word -I'm sure you'll ;) - cheers

Thank's Gary your crit is very constructive: fingers are in this position with premeditation You'll see what I mean when pilot&hero's hands are combined. Forehead - It's still the field to play on ... hair line isn't perfect - that's true I'm not sure if it isn't pulled back enough can you precise what do you mean?..I'll try to widen forehead and check how it looks . I think the head itselfe may appear to wide - I'll try to improve it tomorrow. Boots - that's true I haven't spent to much time on them yet ... Eyes I've been thinking te same way for a while they are to white even for a bit cartoon style face I'll work on that .........and don't worry about eyebrows I know they supose to be out there...If you do have any other critq don't hesitate to share it - big (ch)beers & thank's

Hi I modified hairline & forehead area and remade eye texture. I also fixed face texture .I modeled shoes and made sample textured for it. - cheers

It's a great environnement you made.

Hello - here you can see some smoke details. This time rendering took only3 hours. The smoke is almost done i think. I'll fix some areas in future (if needed)

It's a grat work you've made.
Concerning smoke and fire iI'd just say that she could be less noisy (very much point) at the top. MAybe some blur. And that the fire could be more luminous.

Hi -. You can see diffuse ,lighting ,reflection chanels mixed. I played a lot with specularity level. I hope you like it. I'll show you rivets and dirt maps next (I'll render front window in future). - cheers

HI - the rivets. I had a lot of work with them when modeling. Now I spent ovet 20 hours to render them. :/ Everything should be easier from this point. I Hope you like it- cheers

HI - I rendered hero and compose diffuse specular and occlusion layers. You can see eyebrows added. In future I'll have to readjust colors saturation and specularity level to make my hero fit the final composition conditions. - -cheers

I fixed coloration so the layers are now more coherent as parts of the one image. I also fixed few smaller bugs. - hope you enjoy!

Cool image. I'd suggest throwing in some distance fog to give the scene some depth. Maybe a light blue fog. That'd make the buildings and ship in the background look more unified hue wise and make them recede like there's some atmosphere between them and the camera. It'll also make your foreground ship and characters pop out. Hope this helps.

Nice scene and spectacular too! I agree with the lack of depth it currently has, some different light settings could fix that easily too on top of some depth fog. Keep it up, you've got a nice image there!:thumbsup:

Novacaine & thierry2005: I was working on fog when I saw your posts ;). You are right the city is lacking some deph. I'm working at blur & fog setup It's very hard to achive a good effect without loosing some details ...although it's a must. I'm tryng to apply some motion blur effect to the main ship and my heros but I haven't found satisfying setup yet. The feel of speed and drama is cruical in my work i want it to be as good as possible (here comes you with your crtqs :) ). I'm also working on air traffic now this should put some more life to my pic.

HI- you can see some more ships in the air - I also fixed some details. I think I'm almost done. Now every detail counts. If you can see any mistakes please tell me. I'm not sure If the ship layer and city layer are coherent enough. Is the contrast and coloration of the layers mixed properly??( background seems a bit to bright to me) Thanks -cheers

Leaving Hijang city as a prisoner. Seeing this city through bars in window.
I thought I was smarter, faster then they. Another jump - easy money.
This time was different.
On of my partners chose easier money...the one for my head
I felt the smell of trap I didn't know who...
Most of the countries - United Federation members would do a lot to get me . Not only for revange i knew a lot . And this knowledge was worth even more than my life.
But he finally made it. He caught me. I was sold out
Cunigan was a beast I heard that he was killing to get me...of course in the name of law
In past he was very close He almost got me after my famous action in Old York year’47
He should be happy it was me who made him an officer in rank of chief. But kick in the face when I was seating paralyzed wasn't the best way to express his gratitude....
