Last two weeks i visited the Zürcher Theaterspektakel and have seen four productions. So I should be mentally prepared for this challenge.

First of all i do some small searches about the topic to provide a healthy base for further thoughts and ideas to follow...

at the same time i ask questions to myself (and hopefully refreshing my english). :D

What is spectacular ? Does it always entertain me ? Exist a general spectacle or is it individually noticed? Can war be spectacular ? Tragic/spectacular, does it works together ?
...

could help. :argh: it's just a beginning .. ideas follow.

coCoKNIght : I will give my best.

tragic can of course be spectacular. Think of a car accident with 30 cars involved. :bounce:

i was thionking the same thing. what is spectacular? does it have to be entertaining? it`s supposed to be a scene or situation that could influence history. that is not always entertaining, but breathtaking. for us, pictures like september 11 are not entertaining, but very spectacular and breathtaiking and they influence the future very much.
so you actually have to think of a story behind it to make it really important for history...
or am i thinking too much about the historic aspect??

good luck anyway :)

my brain is still working. :wip:

@oCoKNIght: i'm thinking the same ...
...@zongo: yes, 9/11 was spectacular, and it is it regardless of the individual tragedies.
it was spectacular and also a tragedy.

@Grin3d: i think that couldn't be the point of interest for creating a spectacular image (but indeed it is a very interesting aspect of the topic). :hmm:

the pure spectacle has to be unbelievable an never seen before, at the same time you know it is true and it happens, but you cannot catch it with the intellect first, only with your senses. huh, i clarified the mission and goal. :applause:

...
I note now a few ideas. :lightbulb

in the following a few idea directions, no concrete picture ideas.

idea#1
massive ice-storm
lot of ice, it's cold, all is frozen and broken, a group of individuals explore the area (spectacular force of nature)
-> not very happy with that, but could be a direction.

idea#2
falling balcony
spectacular cam angle, hanging or standing person on it (spectacular accident)
-> hmm ... a little weird.

idea#3
crowd
a large crowd scene, differently possible motives (spectacular crowd)
-> I like it (my computer not so much)

more ideas follow. :D
grin3d.

...
I doubt whether I am on the right way. :banghead:
will do some sketches soon.

Grin3d
09-07-2005, 11:23 AM
some other "written" ideas ...

idea#4
lightning strike on umbrella
spectacular thunderstorm, lightning in the background, one strike on an umbrella holding by a summer dressed woman in the foreground.
-> could be very spectacular.

idea#5
Escape
big crowd escape from burning city (background), women with child in the foreground (sort of a big icon)
-> like that one.

to be continued.

I think about some new ideas which i won’t list all here. The favourite one is a fair (the right word ? “chilbi” in swiss-german) scene with a big converging ferris wheel which rolls into the people mass. The point is also to show some people are running away in panic and others who are starring what happens; kind of the short time before you realize as dramatic the situation is. The point is also to show a child with a lollypop who is watching something completly different (something other real spectacular – in the eyes of a child).

What do you think about it ?

Grin3d.

coCoKNIght
09-09-2005, 05:17 PM
my favorite is the one with the umbrella. I imagine a mighty lightningbolt fiercly hitting a woman with an umbrella, throwing her up in the sky, her hair a total mess... :scream:

I love the ice-storm concept, can be very spectacular; the umbrella one is very spectacular and original... hard to choose one... just a personal comment...

Thanks all for friendly suggestions to my ideas.
I decided differently, but keep the other ideas for later projects,
especially "Ice Storm" and "Escape".

I think I will continue with the "Ferris Wheel" idea.
I like the concept and have made a rough concept sketch (no, it wasn't
my daughter, i made it) and try to do some other (hopefully better)
ones. I think i will choose this or perhaps the landscape format.

Any feedback about my concept idea !?

I have selected a place where all is very spectacular to amuse people.
(How do you say in English: Kermis, Fair, Funfair, Park ?) There is a ferris wheel, a carousel, candies ... ... and it becomes to horror. The ferris wheel is converging and rolling into the people mass. People
are running away in panic or starring what happens. There is also a
child who looks at something complety different and don't see the
danger nearby.

uh,
i'm thinking about the character now, not sure how they should look
like and collect some ref images for the funfair.

update is coming soon.
would be great to get some comments.thx.

Hello,
it's great to have a concept with stuff I haven't got much experience -> Character modeling.

In that sense this update is no wip image exactly. It's showing more what I'm struggle with ;-)

My first and second try in headmodeling (unfinished), more will follow ... because I'm not content with it ...

I've got 3 characters in my concept that are very important for the final image. Screaming woman in the foreground, astonishing man and kid.

There are two months left ... (and I need more than a head).

I can understand your struggling with unfamiliar stuff, I'm in the same situation. With only some experiences in interior scenes I sit here with my large scaled exterior...Take your time to model and remodel as long as you think you have something to be quite statisfied with and then work further on other scene elements. If there is time left you can go back to your characters and work on them again with a fresh view. Perhaps this helps a little. And for a first try your head is not bad at all!

"Practice" - That's exactly what I'm doing now. I've modeled several heads, starting again and again. I haven't got the skills yet to finish the image of my concept, but that's a part of the strategy to get this skills :D I'm still believe to get a result at time I'm quite happy with.

I'm feeling similar like Ripley in Alien Resurrection, where she finds all the failed pre-clones of herself :argh: (need that flametrower ... ) :scream: .

I've learned that the most important thing is to start with a good base mesh (I knewed that before, but have seen it now for myself :hmm: ).

Today there was a Simpsons episode with a run away ferris wheel sequence showing at TV, similiar to my concept. :scream:
It was Episode 88 "Barth's Inner Child" (found out with a google search), there was als written that the sequence is a reference to a Spielberg film called "1941" (1979) with a similiar run away ferris wheel sequence. First time heard about this film.

Anyone have seen this movie ?

I wish I have time for updating soon.
Very busy at the time (work, family and other stuff) ... argh.

Thirst time I thinked about the case, I can't finished this project til deadline.
I'll try to finish (perhaps with some concept changes),
or finish only the modeling part.

I had not much time for working at project. So I changed the concept a little bit for having a final image 'til deadline.
Actually there is only one char (the scream queen) and the run away ferris wheel behind her.
I will spend all the time I have for finishing these two parts, add some environment things, come up with a nice lighting and try different things to get the wheel run away (the current rendering has motion blur), perhaps with some gondolas flying around :-) hehe.

huh,
I started to get the final composition now. I've try to make the best with the less I have. It is far away from my concept, but I want a final image til deadline. I'm not very happy with it, but good enough for finishing.

I've made today some detail work at the char (hair, eyebrow) and then put it to scene with the ferris wheel an done some light tests.

You're right, gondolas should throwing away and the wheel should look more "run away".
I will working on this for the last hours I have.
And try to get the feeling of a "movie poster" similar how you've seen it.

I added the base mesh of a carousel to scene and rendered it with motion blur (I don't finish this modeling part), same lighting but this time rendered in landscape format,
But I prefer the other format, it looks more like a movie poster.

The Run Away Ferris Wheel

I selected a place where is all very spectacular, just for amusing us.
The ferris wheel is one of these spectacular attractions at funfair.

Imagine the wheel is converging and rolling into the people mass.

That's a real nightmare, but also very spectacular.

The final image shows the ferris wheel but no crowd in panic, only one woman who is screaming and running away.

The concept has shown also a kid who is starring to something completly different and also very spectacular (in the eyes of a children).

But no skills and time for modeling more than one character.

The final image shows a reduced version of the concept, and because it is very minimalistic I choosed the form of a movie poster.

That's all.

Hey Roman,

I'm glad to see that you have finished your work!

:bounce: Congratulations! :bounce:

I like the idea of a movie poster, so you've made the best of your small time - and you've also made it a family project, I see:) ! My best wishes and I hope to see you in the next challenge again!:wavey:

Thanks jdd ! Why not ! I could use that idea for a new short. My major interest in 3D is animation, and it is my goal for 2006 to start another animation project.
