concept #1 - the Heist

I'm still toying with concepts.. but this idea seems fun. It's a burglar frog riding a mechanical Frog for his quick getaway after robbing a bank.

Funny concept.. "u don't see that everyday" kinda history. If I don't decide on this I'll do this after the challenge

another concept in mind, kinda crazy and ridiculous situation these characters find themselves in. The background is empty right now, but I wanted to focus on the key elements in the shot - the torpedo and the characters trying to disarm it.

trying to come up with more ideas.. comments always welcome

Yeah... this one is certainly more Spectacular than the first one... but I don't know exactly which one I really prefer... maybe the first, cause you have over the subject a funny touch and a great originality... then, certainly the first for me... but anyway, the second is a good action scene :thumbsup:

I'd go with speed and heroism (dismantling the bomb) I think those two things will be more appealing n an image but they might be harder to express....

Argh, I can't decide.. I think they're both cool

some other things that aren't in the sketches:

frog idea: the mech frog's tongue holding a bunch of money bags, and using it as a large wrecking ball to trash police cars. On the street are a legion of smaller frogs attacking police guys.

torpedo rescue idea: something in the background either chasing or emergin from the water.. perhaps a top-secret renegade sub, or menacing robot.

Personnaly I prefer the frog idea. More original I think. But maybe with a different point of view.
The torpdeo is more spectacular but I think there wil be so much like that. Although I think you can do something better than the others.:scream:

Honestly, that torpedo concept has the makings of a spectacular image. The frog concept is cool but it lends more towards stylized sci-fi and will invoke mixed interpertation by the viewers. The second concept shows right of the back , speed, danger, intensity, drama, awe, tension, panic, .......should I keep going? :)

Also, I think if you added anything else like a robot coming out of the water or a sub or whatever, it will just kill the initial magic you have already established. All you need is some awesome post effects accentuating the speed and put those bad lads high in the clouds.

(Just my 2 cents :twisted: ) Nice work bro.

Like it. Better than the frog in my opinion.

I thought it'd be good to get some sense that they are seconds from the target but then I noticed that the guy flying is looking up as to to say "Sh!t, that ship/city/whatever is getting pretty damn close!". Was that intentional?

Perhaps he could be clinging to the disarming guy by the tips of his fingers only able to hold on got a few seconds more...

Let's face, we all know they're going to disarm the torpedo and save the world, but if you can give the impression that they're doing it by the skin of their teeth than you've got a very spectacular image.

I'd also recommend the second sketch. The first one is fun. But doesn't have that appeal. You can make the second sketch fun as well. Have the trail from the missile kind of in a twirling path in the background. Would show the ride they had and add some fun.

The first concept is excellent, but the second one beats it hands down. A truly spectacular image with it's own taste of humor. I strongly recommend the torpedo one, it's just mind-blowing.

And I agree that you shouldn't put any other elements in the scene... it should be just them, the torpedo and the rising tension. :)

I've decided on doing the Heist concept. It seems alot more challenging to me in project scope, and the opportunity to model funky frog characters instead of more humans ;p

I've started on the Frog Mecha, it's the head WIP

here's the model so far.. I've started on the shell of the main body. Once that's sortof done, I'll work out in the inner mechanics then tidy up the outer shell again.

What I thought was good in the second drawing was the dynamic aspect, so here's an idea: why not try to pose your characters of the first concept in a more dynamic pose, like this you would get the best of both worlds, like they are in an escape pose with the cops aiming at them in the air.
Great modeling of the mecafrog.

moving along Slowly... here's my progress so far on the model. I still have to work on the outer shell, which hasn't been touch since the last update. I think the limbs are going to be the most challenging

It's going really nice, but I have to say, before I looked the frog-with-guy first picture, I thought you're modeling a Chameleon, a really good one.

Now I can also see a frog. I hope you don't get disapointed with the Chameleon thing. Either way, it's awesome!

update on the hind legs - I've done the foot and toes. I'll add more detail to the shin and thigh area, which will come later when I'm totally happy with everything.

There's also pipes and cables to add.. rigging should be fun ;p

I'm a little behind, I hoped to get the front limbs done by the weekend as well.. oh well ;(

This one reminds me of a project I am working on. I am designing a robot for a film with the idea that it COULD be built in real life if you had all the materials. I am designing the joints and mechanisms to drive pretty much every part of the body :beer:

Needless to say it's proving to be really hard :cry:

Easy ...:) ... just to much stuff to do.

1_ U make skeleton and u make it follow the mechanical parts.
2_ U make extra bones that follow the the cables paths.
3_ U skin the bones which follow the cables with..err..cables:scream:
4_ U parent mechanical parts(since they are mechanical and rigid ..u just have to parent them not skin them)
5_when everything is ok with mech parts ..u parent the bones of skinned cables to bones of mech parts ...Best place to parent them is on the root of leg .

sweet dude... I've actually never thought of making bones just for the cables.. makes sense tho..
I wasn't going to create any bones as the objects that make up the robot are essentially bones that just need parenting.

Hi Martin, I have this prob sometimes with near and far clipping planes in the camera... try open up your camera settings and add to the values of the clipping plane should fix it;)

I don't have a camera in the scene tho.. I've tried adjusted the clipping planes for the perspective view, but nothing helped

how do I switch to ortho view? the only way I know is to create a camera in the scene, and activate ortho view for the camera - but how to do it for perspective?
I'm using Direct3d.. switched to OGL and didn't help either. I've also tried with max7 (im modelling in max6) and it seems the bug is still there. thx for the suggestion ;p

how do I switch to ortho view?

The ortho views are just front/back/left/right/top/bottom. When you switch to them from a different view it zooms in on (0,0,0) and from there you just find your model and switch back to perspective where you will be centered there. Also try switching the zoom extents button to "zoom extents selected." Sometimes when it messes up, it is because the objects are in a group; in that case you can open the group, select an object, then press the "zoom extents selected" button. I'm not 100% sure on that, I'll open up the file I had that trouble on to check (if i can find it:P ).

I've almost completed the arms, a bit of clipping on the bicep area - but I'll fix that when it's rigged properly.

I can't seem to render everything at once.. mental ray runs out of memory, and vray gives Unexpected Exception errors. It's just not my week ;p. That's weird since the previous challenge I had far more objects in the scene, and this is still an untextured model.

For now I've managed to render it with 1 arm.. hehe, hope I sort out a the render issues

The body shell is still unfinished and undetailed - I'll fix that last when I've done the main character.

Sorry to hear about the technical problems - but on the good side of things, the model looks ACE :thumbsup:

I really love the robo-frog model. Great ideas and design.

As for your mental ray issues, I had some similiar problems a while back when I was using Max, and you're right, it seemed like some scenes with tons more objects did fine, while seemingly smaller scenes choked things up. You might try collapsing everything to an editable mesh (if you're done with the parametric side of things). Another thing that seemed to work for me was exporting the mesh into a new scene. I have no idea why, but it seemed to solve the problem a few times. Maybe Max creates a lot of scene garbage or something. (This was in an older version, though.)

answers to some questions:
@ace4016 - so far it's just 1 omni and a skylight with FG on. I haven't counted the polys yet..
I think I figured out the problem to my vanishing model when I zoomed extenz.. I had a parent linking problem, and I think when I grouped my objects, I had a linked object outside my group - if that makes any sense ;p

@vrf - interesting test on the new scene solution, I'll try it if all else fails.. thx for suggestion. I think i'll try again tonight;p

PS: I never had any problems when rendering, even very high polycounts have rendered quite good, those are a wicked problem, the rendering and mem errors, sorry can't help you.

under mental ray, "Insufficient memory". Max crashes or render fails
In the scene, 1 Omni with mental ray shadows, 1 skylight. FG on

under Vray - "Unexpected exception error"
in Scene, 1 omni with vray shadows. GI on.

If I delete 1 arm, it's fine.. if I try to render with both arms I can't render it. I've had more objects in previous before so I can't understand it.

using Max6 (max7 also gave errors)
PC = AMD 2800XP, 1 gig ram

have you tried to same as something else and colaps the arm.

it sounds like a mill. hidden objects in the arm.
