hey thanks for the input everyone.. it's been a slow week for progress on this challenge, lots of other client work that I'm trying to get out of the way ;(

nice layout of the frog boss

still having trouble with the mechfrog render??
have you tried "save selected" on the leg and merge it in a new scene, to see if it renders, if not take it apart until i does and merge it back.
ye still having problems.. I haven't tried save selected, but I've tried merging into a completely new doc with new materials without any luck.
I also thought it was the material I was using, as it was 2sided, but that didn't work either. It works fine if I hide everything and just render out the 2 arms.

Nice modeling on Boss-Frog...I think he looks like my boss...hmm
Um, that's a bit disturbing. I tried searching for your thread in 2d and 3d, couldn't find it.. are u in this challenge?

worked on the clothing a bit, I'm quite happy with the collar/tie so far. Waistcoat is WIP, I'll probably delete alot polys as it moves closer the arms since it'll be covered by the jacket.

It's true, the collar and the cravatte seems stuck on him, very flat...

...we imagines all that rather very tended, twisted a little because of this enormous neck, with much of volume for the cravatte, and especially, a very very large node, very symbolic for this guy.

@HammaJamma (member.php?u=75152)

basing on the concept art, he will be mounted on the mech frog and have no visible legs himself. But i could be wrong :D

@Martin Sen

I think that cut on the jacket collar looks weird.
The style of the frog’s clothes looks Victorian and some collars were like that back then.:)

Would it be possible to see a wire frame render of this to see how you approached modelling the jacket?

hi

thx for the crits...

actually, I followed this pic for inspiration on the suit.. it was the best I could find
http://www.neville1.com/stuff/wallpapers/Godfather.jpg
I'll work on the lapel a bit more.. but otherwise I like the shape

@Hoju - I'll post the wires for u as soon as I'm done..

dannyfalch
10-16-2005, 02:28 PM
still a super job on the frog boss.

i think the collar looks good, but imo there have to be at cut below the 3 buttons on the sleave, where the fabric is overlapping before the the seam starts along the sleave.

i just checked a few of my jackets, they all have the same start of the sleave.:wise: :)

gardogg
10-16-2005, 04:20 PM
He looks awesome. I don't like the fingers though. I think they would look better with bulbous fingertips.

http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Frog,%20116.jpg

They don't HAVE to be quite this bulbous but something more along these lines would make the hands look more frog like. I just don't like how they end in a point right now...

wireframes..

how I approached the jacket and the lapel was to have as 2 separate objects, I felt it difficult to model as 1 piece as polygons would be folding backwards, and the normals would be flipped.

It works in this case to have it as 2 objects as u really don't see the detached areas..

Versiden
10-16-2005, 10:06 PM
@3d-empire - there's a cut below the buttons, but it doesn't show too well in that quick render

@gardogg - thanks for the pic, I just realised how gross frogs are.. yuck. ;p I did a bunch of research, and it seems larger frogs, like bullfrogs, don't have bulbous fingertips. Tree frogs and other smaller frogs seem to have larger fingertips for suction. I'm going to model smaller frogs, so I think those fingers might be more bulbous

I've sortof worked out the rendering problem with the mech frog, I think I was running out of memory with the amount of polys..
I've simplied alot of the geometry, and deleted objects that I don't really need.

this is a test scene just to get the feel of the size btwn the frog boss and the mech.. I'm going to have to enlarge the cockpit area a bit more to fit that fat bastard inside..

That's great artin; Nothing to crit on technical things.
I just think you can find a better ôint of view; This one is good (clear comprehension) but it is not spectacular and the spectator is very passive. Morevoer, regarding to where the characters are looking I would let more space at the left of the picture.
Mybe an idea, if the character was looking to us or an object near the camera it would make it better I think. the spectator wuld be more concerned and you'll put more weight to your low angle shot.

10-27-2005, 03:11 PM
heya - thanks all, good constructive comments ;p

just to address some thoughts, I know the pose of the frog mech is rigid right now, but it hasn't been rigged yet. I think the camera angle in the initial sketch won't show off the details for the main characters - so I've changed the concept slightly, I should actually sketch in the idea - will follow it up with a sketch-over;p

@sergioKomic - I think I had too many polygons for the frog mech, and it was running out of memory. I had more detail underneath the outer shell which wasn't necessary, so I've deleted what isn't being shown. Also some of the components for the limbs on the right side of the body have been deleted so save memory, as you're not going to see it anyway.

@authentic - ye, I definately play with the camera more.. thx for input

Wow martin. What are you looking for. It's one of the best thing I've seens since a long time. Not sure it will fit completely the spectacular but it seems to fit my eyes. LOve the bags. The posing on the right character is excellent.
Well colors are still a difficulty but so great potential in this picture.

Just love the one being squashed, makes it all perfect ;D

Maybe add a piece of string tied around the top of the bag, at least on the two not being dragged by the "closing" of the bag.

Think it looks very good over all, cant wait for some texture. Nice job =)

Looks great. I'm particularly intrigued by the great sense of weight you've got in the small frogs/money bags area... splendid.

As for camera angles, A seems slightly better than B. None of them are truly "aah-ooogah!" though... not sure why yet. Usually I would always want to lower the camera, but in this case perhaps the other way around could work, sort of an overview from a slightly more elevated position? But I'm not too sure about that either

Sorry about not being very helpful :D

I have to quote james... the A camera is the best of all, eventually try to work the camera angle and the distance of the camera... eventually a more deep camera angle (24, 22...) and the camera a bit near can add a more inrtiguing feeling ? update on the textures - I've completed most of the texturing for the environment.

I've added more rubble for the broken wall. I modelled a few broken fragements, cloned them, and then use reactor to make them fall and disperse. I'm quite happy with the result so far. I'll manually place some key rubble and broken pieces.

lighting has been slightly improved, I'll work on it more tho.

The broken glass isn't stading out at all .. will focus on it today

Hopefully I can start on the textures for the Mech FRog today ;p

Nice work, Versiden. I like the rubble and the cracks in the pavement. The only thing is there doesn’t look like there’s enough rubble for a hole in the wall that size. I know you’re going to be placing more rubble manually, but I just thought I should say that anyway.:)

Hi Martin,

This is great texturing! I'm trying to get the same "used grunge" look in some of what I'm working on.

Are you using procedurals or bitmaps. And are you rendering in passes & compositing channels in post, or are these channels combined in mentalray?

Just currious. If you have a moment, would you mind taking a look at my latest submission? I'm trying to get the same kind of look you've got on the back of my procession boat. I'm using Electric Image but the same techniques should apply, right?

Awesome Work!

So far I've hit a familiar problem - Mental ray error: cannot free memory. I'm searching for a solution on the forums.. hope I can find something.

I've tried increase the memory limit to max, and checking conserve memory ON.
I also converted alot of my raytrace mats to standard, as I wasn't really using reflections on some materials. That helped the FG process from 4% to 72% before I got the error..

@3dRaven - I'm going to add smoke and dust in the background in post

I've textured the inner pipes and wires, I think it's complete now. I'll move on to texturing the Frog boss.

comments/suggestions welcome

Frog boss textures... I'm quite pleased with what I've covered tonight..
The only things left to texture here are the money notes, shirt, tie and waistcoat. I think the clothes will be really quick, the money notes however is tricky ;p

The left thumb looks a little strange, I'll collapse the model and fix the envelopes manually.

here's a simple rundown of how I did the texture on the Mech frog...

first layer I had a rusty metal texture, second layer - my orange paint.

I then create another layer and paint random lines. I'm using a brush size of 3 or 5

I then use the shape of the lines as a mask for the rusty metal texture..

there's always ways to improve the process I suppose.. but it simple and it works ;p

money textures..

I used a wireframe screenshot of the mech frog for 1 side and a flower image for the other. The shapes and stamps are default path shapes that come with photoshop.

I've added a projector map for my main light source - it adds more depth to the scene with the illusion of other buildings and plant trees casting shadows
