The world is dying. Through the ruins of a once great cathedral, we see lines of people moving towards the transporters that will take them to the generation ships in orbit.

Basic concept, first draft.

I need to tighten the composition considerably, but overall the slow collapse of the world sweeps from the left - the menacing storm front, the swollen sun, the abandoned city, maybe a dark polluted river.

The streams of people meander from the left, out to right of middle and snake in toward the waiting shuttle. One shuttle is taking off and another more distant is already underway, heading into a clearer sky and away from the dying world.

The shot needs alot more distance than I'm able to draw successfully, so I'm going to basic 3D maquettes next then start to look at the composition in more detail.

I like the continuance of ancient buildings, even as ruins, into a future that their builders could barely have imagined. I wonder if any of the great cathedrals will still be standing when spaceports are as commonplace as airports now. So I need to get a sense of the ancient in these ruins.....not sure yet, but working on it.

I like the concept Jules. The sketch communicates a lot of emotion through the color. Great start.

anything that has to do with "end of the world" gets me excited.
great concept!

Thanks!

Yes, I'm a bit of a fan of end of the world scenes myself - if you don't know it, check out Thomas Cole's last painting in his 'Course of Empire' sequence....now that's spectacular!

The concept sketches colouring, this and the next more refined one, will be used to build the palette - I'm sticking with autumnal colours, for the most part, with a clear bright yellowish hue for the sky over on the right. There's got to be a bit of optimism in there somewhere!

I agree, this has big potential. Good sketchwork too! I like the colors. Keep developing this idea and as you said, tighten the composition a bit. Good luck!

Thanks for mentioning that - the link here goes to a page not found, copying/pasting the url goes to someones current entry with a shark. Can you double check please and let me know? I haven't copied anyone's idea for mine, but if mine is that similar I'd better rethink I guess, or I might get penalised for it!!!

Trouble is - end of world scenes, populations leaving, sun dying - hardly original anyway, but if my composition is getting like someone elses, I'll keep my elements but redesign how the image works.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Julian.

Thanks Melkao. Well, the sweep of the city is kind of similar from that angle.....but then tall cities are! I think my concept is very different from that GSO image and concept, so I'll continue with it. My city will be much further back and actually viewed more head-on, I'd say. But I'll keep developing it and see where it goes.

Thanks again.

Julian.
