Lemog, well I knew that the head wouldn't ever be seen at a higher res that roughly 800x400 pixels on a 3636x2657 canvas so decided to keep things managable - my PCs pretty crud when it comes to jumping bewtween Max and PS with heavily layered images. Cheers man.
suk-grigorij, agreed. I tend to use a dedicated specular only spotlight aimed right at the eyes. Forgot this time round so i'll add that. Cheers.
denverbz, SSS? I might do as she will be standing in front of a huge (and spectacular) expolsion so a bit of Sub Surface light on the ears will be required. Generally i try to avoid it as it is very tempting to over use it. Thanks man.
LAURO_MX, no worries man , glad you like her. :)

Sure David... I understand well, you're right...
I have too a very poor PC... and generally, in this case... I have 2 size of maps... low res (1024 or less) to work in the software... that I replace by the high res (2048 as minima) for final rendering...
I'm always impressioned by your characters...

Dimi, Lemog, You guys...
Lemog, regards texture size I find that displaying textures in the veiwports is not a prob as you can always configure the texture display size in the driver settings. It's actually building huge, multilayered buggers in Photoshop whilst running Max that slows me down... Grrrrrr!
I could upgrade my PC I guess but then i'll probably just want to do even bigger textures. :)

I've started on the body of the girl.
I'm thinking some sort of leather/PVC outfit thing with loads of totally unecessary zips and straps.
As you can see it's going to be insanely tight fitting :)

Excellent modeling, but hmmm.... those boobs are waay to apparrent!
Tone them down a little or make her top a bit looser - shes looking like a page 3 model after a wet t-shirt competition at the moment!
Nice work, but calm down! Take a cold shower!
EDIT - i just read that its gonna be pvc or summat - that would explain the tight fit, but i think with skin tight pvc, the tits would be flattened and lifted quite a bit. Right now, they seem to be footloose, fancy free, and swaying in the wind :scream:

Lemog, it's always a killer when your work PC puts your home setup to shame. I'm in the same boat. Plus I don't have tech support on the end the phone :)
hindus, hi there. Yeah I changed my concept a bit. I gave a written description but it's got a bit lost in the thread somewhere. Once i've finshed the female model i'll mock the scene together with the assets i've already created. Thanks man.

Great modeling. I would suggest changing the wrinkles on the shirt between the breasts. The wrinkles remind me of stretching clay.

Ha ha,. yeah, I know it's hard to keep it down in size,.
it's the same thing with the car modelers, always big weels and exhaustpipes,..
I just think the attention is better put in your very good compotision and dynamics in the scene..
but, yeah it looks good,.:D
He swamps. Great tutorial, like andy said.. shame I ain't got brazil (though it's free to try isnt it?) You are really into skin hey... well can't say I'm not.. has to b the most difficult thing to texture. Wish I had a tutorial like this a year or so ago :P

I do have another question for you though, once your have done the texture and unwrap the UV's, how do you attach to the rest of the model and add goem without having to re-do those uv's.

Wow, cheers guys, so many great responses.
gardogg, but then don't they call grey, globally illuminated renders clay models? Check out my next post with some texture on the top and a zip through the middle - I think it looks a bit more natural now... Let me know what you think. Cheers mate.
Gus_clifton, cheers Gus. I've done plenty of research - about 27 years worth :)
DJ_Fleury, thanks man.
Yevgeniy Shelukhin, Hey man. Every time I model a breast people complain that they're either too small, too big, too saggy, too pert, etc... Boobs are such subjective shapes that you can never please everyone. To be honest I tend to just start modelling and go with whatever seems to develop. Provided they're well modelled and within the realms of possiblitlity I'm happy :) Cheers for your post.
visualact.com, I think I know what you're saying! Thanks mate.
eddieellis, haven't done one for modelling as such. The skin one is a few pages back, think you found it. AS for your UVs question the answers is I don't.
3d-empire,

I've proceedurally textured the top - no UV unwrapping, wayhey!
The zip has been created by path deforming the model to fit the exact shape of the top - bit of a nightmare to get right but ultimately worth while.

eddieellis, hey man. Just realised I only worte half an answer to that last post of yours, sorry man, I got distracted. Anyhow, to continue where I started...
eddieellis, haven't done one for modelling as such. The skin one is a few pages back, think you found it. AS for your UVs question the answers is I don't.
...bacause I don't have to . As this model is for rendering there's no limit on texture sizes and numbers. I tend to keep things limited to a head texture, arm and hand, torso, leg and shoe just for simplicity's sake but you could have a hundred different textures if you like as long as they are included in a Multi-SubObject material and assigned to the indivdual element of your mesh via the relevant id.
Therefore it is possible to completely model and texture a head before even starting the rest of the model as you know it's going to have it's own unique UV co-ordinates. If I were making an in-game character I would finish the whole model first and spend a fair amount of time arranging the UV co-ordinates on one (or maybe two) t-pages to give an optimal texel resolution as obviously texture count and size is at a premium.
Hope this answers your question.
Cheers mate,
Dave.

Nice texturing!!!
But hair...
AndyH
10-08-2005, 01:15 PM
Wow! That looks frickin ace! She is reeeeal purdy
The hair and the pvc top go together so well - sorta like kill bill meets matrix.
I think your pvc shader could be smoother and more contrasty though - it looks halfway between leather and plastic at the mo. One other crit is that her hair could do with being integrated a bit better - there are some areas that make her look a bit bald around her temples and scalp.
Great work on the zipper - i bet that was a right pain in the arse. Is all that poly modeling? Id like to see some wires cos the creases are superb.
Ace work - youve got a pretty good chance of a prize from the looks of it
dannyfalch
10-08-2005, 01:46 PM
WOW! very nice:eek: ,a nice leather/plastic thing going on there
Ok, point taken..
i think the zipper would have some kind og metal stop thing at the ends of it, largest at the bottom, where it seams to be broken.
and you've got some hair going througt the jacket.
inpressive work.

CGAngel(3d), thanks man, hair is hopefully just a place holder now until I can get myself upgraded to Max7.5/8 and sort some decent stuff out.
AndyH, yeah the shader might need a bit of work and the hair needs a total overhall. And yes, zip was major pain top get right - Max seems to have a mind of it's own when it comes to global modifiers - and most other times :) I'll post a wire in the week. Cheers man.
3d-empire, the hair is not going to stay like that., At the very lest it'll be thicker and certainly avoiding the collar. Ideally it'll be scrapped and re-done altogether. Zip is WIP definately needs those stoppy bits, well spotted.
visualact.com, i'm seeing some sort of a pattern here :) - hair's changing, cheers man.
sergage, well spotted. I have made the spec map darker in places to try and counter the shiny neck, at the end of the day its becasue the light is so high it's not catching the forehead like it is the neck, i'll move it for the final composition. Cheers man.

As far as the modeling goes, I'm afraid I don't have any useful crits at all, mainly because it's pretty damn flawless :D And since you are swimming in well-known waters, considering your history of realistic humans, I fear that my impression will remain the same further down the road too.

I've been tweaking the explosion and it's looking better. There's still work to be done as a, it's a bit uniform, b, the edges are too fluffy and c, there are some weird artifacts.
I'll get this one right and then clone is several times and change the seed for one uber-explosion...
This ones had a bit of photoshopping in terms of an overlayed layer and a sharpen.

is it the clipmap that we see on the right?
Do U use some plane with transparency ?
pseudonympending
10-11-2005, 03:55 PM
madshooter, cheers man.
melkao, It's particles - 4 Max particle arrays to be precise, each a different colour representing a different phase of the explosion. The textures are all proceedural using fall-off maps to self illuminate and add transparency. The particles themsleves are spheres.
Further back in my thread you can see a wire of the it...
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=273652&page=15&pp=15
gpepper, clipmap? There are no planes in there - just particle spheres. I think you're refering to that weird artifact on the lower right - dunno what that is, possibly a bigger sphere that's not blending too well. There are other clearly apparent shpreres visible particularly when you look around hte edges. They'll all be sorted. Cheers.

Not that strange really, it's to be expected with this technique. Basically I need to use more particles and up the transparacy to get a better intergration between the spheres.

I've added legs as you can see. The wrinkles aren't quite as sucessful as the ones on the top but will do to start with.
I'm planning to add zips to the front and outside bottom legs. Any futher wrinkling will be done with displacement maps.

Legs 11? Where are you from? Thats not far from where i work :) Tis a fine establishment! Birmingham, right?
Looking superb dave - i love the chunkiness and solid feel to the hips and thighs. I think the lower legs/ shins are a bit thin and straight in comparison though. The high heels, as cool as they are, seem a little out of context given the whole zombie destruction scenario... The midriff seems to be lacking something. Maybe she would benefit from a belt or something?
Really nice work so far.

I must admit i've never been to Birmingham, I live further south - right under the flight path of Gatwick airport to be precise. I was just using an old bingo call - but then again i've never been to bingo either. God I haven't lived :)
I know what you mean about the legs, I wanted them to be quite curvy. I found some reference of girls wearing lycra, leather and PVC - under my dads bed (just joking mum) - and it just looks so much better when it's filled out - the really skinney birds seem to get lost in it. Her calves are quite pumped too but you can't really tell from this render. Hopefully the displacement mapping will sort them out, i'm planning to add a fair amount of detail this way.
That black thing at the top of her trousers is the start of a belt, I think i'll add a nice chunky buckle or something. I've also considered one of those belts that you see girls wearing purely for fashion - they're not even run through the belt loops and just hand there often to one side for effect. Might look cool.
Cheers Andy,
Dave

I agree. One more thing I would do would be to taper how the material falls off the breast and continues down the torso. Just so her top doesn't look like its vacuum sealed.

Gus_clifton, hey man. I think you're probably right about the feet i'll have a look. Once i've got the arms in and correctly proportioned I can get the feet the perfect length by directly comparing them to the inner length of the forearm from elbow to wrist. Cheers man.

well knees size makes a change from the eternal debate of breast size I guessFirst of all, she looks great!
On the eternal debate, I think it would depend on where you live?
African women are usually larger and general European smaller...
I'd say she's on the big size? Nothing wrong with that either ;)
I do think female anatomy can be very attractive without being that large though.
But it's not as if a large cup makes anyone unattractive...

Ok, i've added a fair bit since the last post. Obviously she's now got arms and hands, there's also all the detail around the waist and i've also improved the shader for the suit.
I've added bump maps to the jacket and trousers although am not using displacement currently as it adds so long to the render time its not really parcticle - the bump map's doing 80% of the job anyway.
The 'Bad Girl' emblem on the belt is hinting at the idea that she's a bit of a super hero wannabee with the play on words suggesting that whilst she is a bad girl she is also Badgirl...
As requested i'll do a few wireframe renders so you can see exactly whats geometry and what's texture.
My next task is skinning and as soon as that's done i'll post the full scene showing my updated concept (i've had yet another idea) and all the models so far - all 2 of them :)

The only thing that I can think of to crit is that the wrinkles, particularly in the arms, should not be so regularly placed throughout the arm. I guess there would be wrinkles near the shoulder and the elbow (where most of the bending occurs), however, you have wrinkles placed up and down the entire arm and it doesn't look natural to me. Sorry if that is nitpicking!

the female character is looking supurb!! but i donno if its the prespective, but i think the character is bit out of proportion. Spacially the arms are is looking very short. One way you could tell is the hight of the character is equal to the length between the two tip of the middle fingers while the arms are spread apart. and also note, while the hand is in the resting pose, its tip of the middle fingure should reach the center of the thigh.....
but, i think u did an amazing job with the textureing and style. You're always able to put waight into your character not to mention your female characters r really hot. keep up the good works mate

...and a close up of the torso.
I'm quite plesed with the way the zips worked. As i've mentioned before it's done with path deforming the zip model along a spline taken directly from the relevant edge loop of the top.
Only prob is the zip model doesn't need to be meshsmoothed but the rest of the body does so when I attach it I have a problem.
I am using different smoothing groups to keep the shape but the meshsmooth is still adding huge amounts of unecessary geometry to an already dense area of the model without actually changing the appearence.
Anyone got any ideas how to get round this problem?
Cheers,
Dave
AndyH
10-17-2005, 09:29 AM
try adding a mesh select modifier. Select everything but the zip, then add a meshsmooth (while still in poly/element sub object mode), but turn off 'apply to whole mesh' - that should only subdivide the selected elements/ polys.
It makes your modifier stack a little bit more complex, but its the most efficient method.
Hope that helps
dannyfalch
10-17-2005, 09:33 AM
and you do have to attach the zip?? not just group it ,.

Andy H, good good point, can't believe that hadn't crossed my mind :) Nice one
3d-empire, yeah it has to be attached bacause it's going to be skinned, plus it's way preferable to skin the lower poly model and then add the meshsmooth above the skin modifier - means I can go back and tweak stuff later, plus there's massively less verts to weight.
She can have as many sisters as you like - shift+drag, number of copies... 5? (don't want to be greedy)!
Oh to live in a 3d world :)
yunisirees, cheers man. I tend to have the character at 0 or 1 meshsmooth iterations in the viewport and then at least 2, maybe 3 render iterations, much the same as your technique. I could go in and delete non-visible tris but it's a bit of a ball-ache, think i'll go with the mesh select option that Andy suggested. Cheers for your post
AndyH
10-17-2005, 01:04 PM
If you really wanted to keep the zipper seporate, maybe you could copy the skin modifier from the torso and paste instance it on to the zipper? Ive used that once or twice at work and it works pretty well. If it jumps when you paste the skin modifier, then use the 'always deform' tickbox on the advanced skin settings. It resets your model, and then when you turn it back on, it re-enables the envelopes, but in their current position. Be careful though, cos you cant undo this.
Hope that helps - if you dont understand it i can give you a step by step guide.
pseudonympending
10-17-2005, 01:13 PM
Cheers Andy, I understand what you're saying but reckon the mesh select trick will do it. At the end of the day this is all just to save a few polys and makes no difference to how the model will look so it's not worth too much effort. Cheers man.
I've had a trademark change of heart on the concept front and am hoping the new idea will be considerably more 'Spectaular' than the last. I've just booked next week off work purely to work on it. As my boss said - loser!

Very good your work, especially the modeling! But I think that you I could improve the pants of the girl. In the part near to the pockets I think that this has a lot of folds what gives the impression of that pants is a little wide. I think that if you do it more tight, it will be better!
Good luck!!

Ok, here's the much hyped (by me) new concept.
It might be a bit hard to tell what going on from this but basically she is leaping from the front of an exploding big rig (a Peterbilt 359 to be precise) as it jack-knifes and explodes behind her.
If that wasn't enough to ruin anyones day there's an army of zombies on her arse too! One driving, one climbing on the hood and possibly a third (not shown) on the roof.
There's also a helicopter in the background either a) suggesting a source for the explosion (more baddies) or b) offering an escape route (goodies).
I'm liking this concept more as it means making less characters whilst not compromising 'spectacularness' - although I will of course have to model the truck, the chopper, the buildings, the second zombie, etc...
Let me know your thoughts.
JamesMK
10-18-2005, 04:21 PM
Sheesh, jack-knifing big rig, zombies and explosions.... that's like.... couldn't be better, dude! :D
The only thing that hit me when looking at this 3D sketch, is that a slightly more elevated camera could work really well... just a bit more upwards, looking downwards just a little bit more than now. Like as if it was mounted on one of those really expensive camera rigs... thinking maybe the highway scene in that Matrix sequel kind of situation...

The concept is great and I like the angle of the action too. I would very much like to see more!

Gardogg,
The pose of the main character looks like a basketball player throwing a pass under the legs. Maybe that should be changed.
Perhaps it's basketball players that look like leather clad women leaping from the front of exploding petrol tankers...? No, you're right!
Lync, as you say though, there's still so far to go yet. I'll no doubt have another 15 changes of heart before the end before going back and doing what I had in mind in the first place :)
Cheers guys.

Swamps, you got a cool rocking concept going on.
BUT,.. i was looking at the challange guidelines, just to see how large final the image should be,
anyway, it says that the spectacular event must happen in real life,.
I havn't seen a lot of zoomies lately...
Just a hint..
You are doing a fantastic job, it would be a shame if the image was not acceptet because of zoombies,.
pseudonympending
10-19-2005, 01:13 PM
3rd user, not that brave - my orignal concept had 10 zombies in it, this ones got 2/3! More decidedly cowardly :)
and you must have a lot of free time:)
Now this made me laugh! On top my standard 8 hour working day (plus 2 hour drive), I'm juggling 3 freelance jobs and helping out at my parents B&B whilst still trying to stay fit and have an iota of a social life. Oh yeah, then there's this challenge...
However a year ago I was sleeping 10 hours a day and whiling away the evenings in front of the TV. Compared to that, this lifestyle rocks :buttrock:
Cheers dude.
yunisirees, yeah the angle needs work but the whole thing will get a total overhaul by the time I get the finished models in. Cheers man.
3d-empire, don't say things like that man, you had me worried! :)
I checked the rules out and i'm convinced my idea is within the brief (which let's face it is pretty vague). I think the zombies themsleves fit the brief really well...
The key theme of this challenge is the portrayal of something that is truly a spectacle - something both extraordinary, but within the realm of possibility. A once in a lifetime event.
The fact that they are real people that have been infected in some way makes them into something extraordinary, in this case zombies. And who's to say such an infection is not within the realms of possibilty...
Don't consider yourself limited to things that are around now - dinosaurs and space-cities can both be spectacular too!
I guess if dinosours and space stations are in then surely zombies are a go.
Cheers for your post, I don't mean to flame you in any way. I really appreciate you pointing this out, if anything i'm just convincing myself here.
Cheers man.

This is my first attempt at a vehicle so no laughing! :)
Having said that, I feel it's gone quite well so far and makes a great change from characters - it's a very different discipline though and i'm excited about trying something different.
I want to model to bear a fair resemblence to the original although it really doesn't matter how accurate it is provided it looks believable.

Looking good - so is this your week off now?
I like the new concept - its certainly gonna be more action packed and dynamic, but it seems a tad cheesy to me, what with the truck-driving zombies and all. I think the girl sassily walking away from a massive explosion sending zombies flying around would look much cooler. You could do lots with her hair and lighting too.
But hey, its your choice and it looks like youre going with the new idea :)
Keep it up - youve cerainly given yourself a lot more work to do, but you have a week off, and we have 40-odd days left til the deadline!

DJ_Fleury, no worries man, I always appreciate rigorous critique. The standard is so high in these challenges it's important to get the little things right. Glad you like the new concpet. Cheers.
gardogg, I'm trying to do a no holds barred image - In other words, if I think of it and decide it would work then I go for it regardless of effort. However yes, work does tend to get in the way of this technique somewhat :)
Andy H, hey mate. No, week off is next week. Hopefully i'll have the truck done before that week starts and you'll see some huge leaps forward in that time.
As for the concept, I just wasn't comfortable that the last concept was spectacular enough - to be honest the whole idea was spwaned from me copping out of involving her in the action. I agree that the new idea is considerably cheesier but it works better as a final image in my mind - although I will be actively trying to limit the hum of gorganzola emminating from the final thing :)
Mr Micro26, thanks man.

The first building. There's not much geometry in these with most the detail being acocunted for in the textures which are part photoshop part photographs. They're going to be quite blurred/distant in the finished image so no need to go OTT.

These buildings have already gone in - i've built them specifically to test and tweak the chrome/car paint shaders that i've applied to the truck. It's rendering as I type... very, very slowly! As soon as it's done i'll post it...

Ok, so i've put the buildings and a basic road texture into the scene and suddenly the chrome has come to life. It's still a bit noisey but that can be tweaked.
I'm most pleased with the subtle niceness of the bodywork reflections - I had to crank the sampling right up to get this to work and the rendering hit was enourmous - 3 1/2 hours for this.
For lighting i'm using a key light and Brazil GI, with 2 bounces.
There's still loads of work I could do to the truck (mainly things like bump mapping in all the seams and rivets), but for now i'm going to concentrate on getting the girl and the zombie into the scene and will add localised detail depending on the final camera view.

SONIC-X, hey cheers, great post thanks man.
madshooter, thanks a lot mate
Dutchman, thanks dude. For the explosion I experimented breifly with DustDevil but it wasn't really working as I wanted so I decided just to go for a good old fashioned PArray. There are 4 different PArrays each coloured and timed slightly differently for a different phase of the explosion. The material is textured with opacity fall-off and noise. Hope tht helps, give me a shout if you want a more detailed explaination.
Climax,
Optimus Prime is on! Haha!
I've added in the girl and am trying a render right now. At the lowest exceptable quality it's taking about an hour and 3/4 and 800x600. I expect the final, hi-res render to take at elast a day, possible 2 - i'll have enough time for a whole stag-do!
Cheers man
Agent_Orange, hey man, I rendered this one at 800x600. Final image has to be around 2657x3636 so that's... erm... bloody ages! Very scarey really I need to be finished a good week before the deadline to make sure everything is rednered and give me time for some post-processing. Cheers dude.
gardogg, haha, thanks man
coochaki, yeah it's a bit extreme I agree - this topic is reminding me of modeling the girls breats - some like more others like less! :)

Ok, so I left the PC rendering an 800x600 over night at full quality (I slept teerribly as the noisy bugger and I share a room), and this morning it was only half done! Arse. My quick calculations estimate a 2567/3636 render would take in the region of 8 days! Total arse!
This is unacceptable so i've gone back to the drawing board and rethink the lighting without taking too much of a hit on quality (I hope).
hindus, plenty of time left, provided I can get this render time way down.

Here she is, astride the beast!
There is so much to say about this that I don't even no where to start. Suffice to say that there is still a mountain to climb and everything still needs work - and not a zombie in sight!
The lighting in the background is set up for the explosion. I was able to bring the rendering times down dramatically (this took about an hour) by limiting the amount of GI in the scene - in some ways it looks better too which is nice.
I'm planning to have a helicopter reflected in the windscreen of the truck - this is what she's looking at and how she plans to escape her predicament.
I think i'll work on getting her finished next (including new hair), then i'll finish the cab and finally i'll add some zombies. Oh yeah and the explosion.
And the helicopter.
Phew!

I've tweaked pletny in this version, probably the bigest change being to the back-light. I took out the orange (which combined with the blue skylight was making the image too pink).
I've also adjusted the girls head to better show off her face - she'll now be focusing on the on a rope ladder, the very bottom of which will be visible in the foreground the rest in the windscreen reflection leading up to the helicopter. She'll have just dropped her smoking gun ready to make the leap.
I prefer the darker zips although they were a bit of a fluke - they changed when I altered the shoe material, I think i'll change the belt to match...

hey I had no idea you changed the composition! The lighting on the bg buildings looks very strange to me, like it doesn't match the rest of the image.
humm, I think she is done for, I mean, what chance does she have against zombies when she's wearing high heels on a slippery metal surface? she will slip and the zombies will have a blond's brain for lunch. ;)
