Oh man theres a old lassy who used to live near me who looked exactly like that, looking sweet... Any chance of making her glasses lenses enlarge her lil twinkly eyes?
BTW my girlfriend says the other granny looks alot like her dad in a dress... Mwahahahahah

ROFL Andy... She's got so much persona already... She reminds me a little of the granny in 'madagascar' who makes an appearance in the penguins short before Wallace and Grommit COTWW... Bad kitty!
Also that second pose... hah! she looks like she's about to jab... fight! fight! fight!
Faark man, I'm such a fan of the quirkiness you've injected into these characters... Well done mate:thumbsup: Keep Rokkin:buttrock:

granny #2 is perfect, no crits at all.
i like a little less granny #1 but dont really know why. Maybe the face texture i find a bit overworked.
however the expressions are bloody amazing.

ah ha ha ha that 2nd granny looks so good!
They both look great Andy!
Granny #1 looks cold and grimacing. I can see her being a big time chain smoker, and the liver spot on her forehead just finishes it off.
Granny #2 looks a lot kinder and warmer. I can imagine Granny #1 trying to bully her into going to the shops to get some ‘ciggies’ and then stealing her medication while she’s out.

Aww very nice Granny 2 is most pleasing excellent work Andy!
the middle pose looks to me like she's about to go all Granny-Fu on somebody's ass.
definately my favorite character.
As for granny 1, I actually thought about saying you should add a cig sticking out of her mouth. Funny stuff.
Keep up the great work, You've definately got my vote for number 1.
top class concept for a granny, funny and the same time weird!

Hmmm.. I was a little bit distracted while attempting to texture the scooters, so i decided to quit doing that and test the grannies on them to see if they fit, and to see how cool they look on them!
Granny 2's scooter will look slightly different - not just a colour change.
Both scooters are untextured. Only the wheels and the base metal shader have been defined to any extent.
Yeah, awsome, they are ready to race :)
Curious to see what kind of texture you will put on theses scooters ;)

Cheers folks!
CoCoknight - i might go back and tweak the fingers.
Eddieellis - i dunno... Im tempted to, but im no animator. Ill probably just do my usual 4 pose collage like i did with bunny and nerd.
luciferous - I tried feverishly to get refractive glasses on my office nerd character, and it was a lot harder than i thought, so i might give it a miss depending on how much time i have left.
Daddymack - Cheers. I saw a preview of W&G, so there were no adverts or trailers, and thus, no madagascar short. A small price to pay for not sitting through 25 mins of ads :)
Homer Junior (Hoju) - heheh - thanks! Ill definately make granny 1 a smoker. Good description of granny 2 - thats exactly how i picture her.
Goul - Hmm. I dont realy think i can add that much to the scooter texture. Im using a lot of reference and they look kinda plain. I dont wanna exactly add flame stickers on the side or anything! Ill probably just scuff granny 1's scooter up a bit - make it look like its seen a few scrapes. Granny 2s scooter will have a shopping basket on the front.

Hey yup Andy
I love the fat Grannies face it is really strong. And the shopmobility thingies look ace too. I dont feel worthy to crit your 3D. The haggard Grannie is not as memorable as the fat one. But there is enough pure evil in the face to make up for it.
Hope its all goin well.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! :argh:
back off !
They have SO much character to them already, Andy. Granny #1 doesn’t look like she really needs the scooter. If you looked at her the wrong way she wouldn’t think twice about getting up to kick your ass.:scream:
What are their names?
This is looking extremely good, Andy! The bikes material is so realistic!
As a suggestion, I would make the skinny granny's hair more scruffy (in the race, I'm sure it'll be) and the area around the eyes a little less dark (unless she is called Granma Palpatine)!
Keep up the good work!
haha excelent!
Skinning looks clean...
Yop that cigarette thing isn't a bad idea!
and i too like to know there name.
maybe will ya make the thinner one looks taller than the rounder one?
And a stronger (more square) vehicule for this last one could feet better her charactere. Just like in a granni game (! haha funny game! you'd have to kick skaters, graphers etc asses, all that crappy trash youngsters that makes our streets such a shame! an anti GTA game, in much more wicked wild stylee! Then submiting project to rockstargames?), where you could choose vehicules with characteres ?
Plus thoose ladys bags somewhere? (armory)
Anyway this is tripping, terrific. Impatient to see thoose "bikes" textured.
Keep it up :buttrock:
oo, and a Lady Diana pin ?

No updates the last couple of days - ive been too damn tired once i finish work! Plus, im a little less motivated now that im texturing inanimate mechanical objects.
I need to go walking around the backstreets of wolverhampton and dudley soon to pickup some reference photos for the environment. Im really, bad with envirnoments so ill need all the help and motivation i can get!
Cheers for all the responses!
goul, zapan, caution, creatingreal - thanks!
Matador - awww, thanks!
Cocoknight - yeah, the socks are a bit of a physical mystery. I might make the sagging more plausible and accurate once she has been posed.
Tremoside - Hmm, i dunno. I might make the evil granny's scooter a bit beaten up and scuffed - as for stickers, im not sure. Nice idea though.
Rich - Noice to see youse here son. Ta for the words. Hope to see some more poinneh tiddied leddehs from you soon!
JAmesMK - erm - i have no idea what youre talking about, but thanks! Ill definately give her a ciggie to puff on.
gpepper - are they that repulsive? .... :bounce:
Hoju. Hmmm... Im not officially christening them yet, but i presume sometihng along the lines of ethel, vera, beatrice, florence etc... Its not really important for this pic. If i develop them as characters for a short or somethin, then ill name em.
DrFx - Im thinking of roughing up granny1's hair, but being as its probably gonna be a texture change, ill leave it til shes posed. That way, i can see exactly how the hairs gonna look from the angle you see it at. I agree with the eyes comment too. The art director guy at the place i work (very seasoned ex-disney artist) says the eye shadow is way too much, even for an evil character. Ill try and bring her eyes out of the orbits some more to reduce the shadow and make her more appealing.
Shtl - Awesome idea about the anti-GTA game! Really! There could be missions like getting a pint of milk or some sausages from the local shop while avoiding things like cars, youngsters and long flights of stairs! Great idea  I was thinking of some kind of badge too. Or a flower or a war memorial pin of somesort.
Daddymack - 'Bent' folder? Whats all that about? Ill see if i can do summat about the hair.
Coming next - Finished texturing on the scooters and a variation of it for granny2. Then im gonna work on the composition before i start bringing the characters in and posing them.

Now you mention it, it is what i was finding odd in the face. I was able to feel there was something wrong, but was not skilled enough to identify what it was.
cant wait for the final scene. how about the evil one using an umbrella or a stick to kick the other ?

Hammajamma, sergage, thierry, melkao - ta!
Lukep - Ive brought the eye sockets out a lot to reduce the shadowing around her eyes. Also lowered her head so the hair looks longer. These changes can be seen in an imminent update. If you look at my challenge page, youll see the initial concept. She is striking out at the fat granny with a walking stick :)
glenn - Good idea! Not sure if id have enough room on her cart for em though.
garddog - they already have plenty of wrinkles, you just can see them from a distance. Ill probably do something to soften up granny 2's hair later.
gpepper - I guess. But my art director at work says that even the most despicable, evil villains have an appeal to em. If you make them look too evil, then they lose their character. Ill tone the evilness down for the next update. Zelda from 'Terrahawks' was really evil, a robot AND covered in wrinkles, but she was still kinda cute and cuddly.....
luciferous - heh - yeah. I might just settle for my camera phone - its always on me, unlike my camera.
paperclip - hmmm... i wouldnt go as far as polishing a space just yet - there are loads of damned good entries!
duddlebug - nice skirt mrs Duddle!
posh - Me likes your shiny new avatar! Very corpse bridey. I take it youre the skinny one of the 2 grannies? Duh!
agou, dimitris, gus - nice to know they make folks laugh
nemirc - yeah... perhaps too scary - im gonna tone her down a tad.

Ive gone back to where i started and re-worked the composition.
Be really picky with this if you like. Im ok with pleasing composition, but when its deconstructed by an expert, there are always loads of inconsistencies.
Im quite happy with the feel of it at the moment, especially the layered background and the colours, but i still think it could be simpler, and easier on the eye.
Ive also tried reformatting it to landscape. I prefer the portrait one myself.
What do y'all think?
makaron
10-17-2005, 10:49 PM
If the final image gonna have that tilt, then I prefer the portrait :)
JamesMK
10-17-2005, 11:54 PM
The portrait one feels more open, as opposed to the landscape version which is slightly claustrophobic. A choice... well, it all depends on what you're looking for yourself here.
The way their heads line up with the right-hand wall needs to be considered... not that I know which one looks better in that respect, but it does have a certain impact on how these babes are perceived. Maybe if you want a more open feel, it would be best if their heads went above the wall, like in the landscape version. On the other hand, if they should appear more like an oppressed/oppressor duality, the bunched look of the portrait one would convey that better.
Tricky of course!
.
AndyH
10-18-2005, 12:07 AM
Yeah, basically, if a line (ie, the wall) goes across a characters head or neck, its a no-no. Because the wall is at a sensible height in the scene, it looks like that from that angle. I liked it in the initial concept where their faces were nearly in sihlouette because of the sky behind them, but the wall line ran through their heads.
Im trying to use the buildings to frame it and use the walking stick, rooftops, elbow direction and the line of sight to create focus. Im also trying to divide the image up by using the wall, the lampost and the kerb.
Momentum

Anyone got anymore hints and tips on the composition? This is probably the phase where i need the most help! Gotta make sure the layout and elements are all correct before i start modeling the environment. Ive booked 2 days off work next week so i want to make a start then.
Let rip folks!
there is a commercial over here (for high band connection) where we can see classical action movies in slow motion, well, not slow motion, the horses goes so slow, actors acting VERY slow etc...
this is the feel of your image... aaa, didn't read the first concept pages of this topic shame on me...
but before seeing your comp, I had thought of something more classicalily spectacular...
like thoose two jumping over steps, thoose ones from up right to left down, grannies making the perpendicular strengh line from middle low right to upper right corner...buildings rythming background lines... anyhow dynamic goes often very well with diagonals...
OK, i hope you wont bother i post this, just hope it can help:
http://www.shtl.freesurf.fr/andyHcompopropos.jpg
or maybe you could add a climax stuff in the way of the grannies pursuit?
the second before the spec?
just thoughts, hope it can give you ideas or counter ones ?
anyhow, keep the old da'ty bag funk be with you

Just got back to it.
Ive shuffled around the elements of the image to try and make it more appealing and simpler to look at.
Its nearly there - i want to start modeling the elements of it today.
Again - any die-hard composition fans out there - let rip!
EDIT - i just noticed your pic Shtl! It wasnt showing up before for some reason! Looks good - i like the idea of them jumping some steps. Ill bear it in mind.

Looking good, and those reference pics seem very promising - particularly since there happens to be a shot of some stairs there, and I actually like shtl's idea a lot.... some stairs or a similar "perilous" setting could add an extra dimension to an otherwise already damn fine concept.
.
Whatever you choose, since your charactere are this cool, it will be OK
(mmm, i know it's way too late, but i would have put little technical stickers on the side of the vehicules...?)
Thoose pics buy time for update, but they make us imagine the scene better.

Im starting to lose heart with my entry due to composition troubles!
I made this quick mockup to try and visualise what it will look like and put my fears to rest. 2 images comped together - one with GI, one with basic lighting. The finished thing wont look that shadowy or washed out. Its just tempoary lighting.
Im quite pleased with it, but i still think the composition needs work.
It needs to look more kinetic i think. I toyed with the idea of one of them smashing something like a window or knocking over a bin, but it would require a drastic camera change - i want to keep them both focused on the foreground. The idea is that they are skidding around the corner at speed and granny 1 has hit the kerb, knocking her scooter sideways.
I might have granny 1 doing a small jump off a kerbstone. The finished things will hopefully look a lot more exciting cos im gonna try and have their coats or hair flapping in the wind.

hehe, looking really good andy! :) i think the idea of the kicking of the rubbish bin with things flying out, would add an extra angle to the granny on the right making her look like she's even meaner than she already is! have you tried the composition as more of a landscape instead of portrait? i think it'd be nice to see a little more space (road/ pavement etc) either side of the grannies... and green-scooter-granny... you've left her defenseless!! i don't think it's very fair!! i think she would look sweet with a brolly in her hand so she can at least block walking stick attack! you gonna put any shopping in her basket? some skid marks on the road would be cool too! so gambette!! and dont lose heart its coming together really well!! ;)

Hmm... I don't really feel it... just a quick hipshot in the dark, but how about copying the style of your typical "kewl sk8ter flick"? Weird camera angle, fisheye lens, you'd have to imagine the soundtrack of course, and these two old bags doing some insane stunt (still driving their things of course), maybe sliding down the railing on some stairs... something like that.

I think adding more of the street to the left side of the image could give more of an indication that they are swerving dangerously around a turn. Also, I agree with everyone else. A trashcan full of stuff flying could look great, and would give a hint as to how fast they are going.

mama's gonna die tonight !
There is a nice work on the character but it's right that, as you said, there is a problem in the picture's composition. I don't know if it's a problem with the point of view, I'd rather think not. The picture can be really more dynamical with the grannies' scooters (one of them could be flying in a cartoonish way) and also thanks to grannies' facial expression, they could be threatenning or terrified. Here, they are quite indifferent.
That was just little crits, but you are conscious of the little defaults of it. Still, it's a really nice work you have done!:bounce:

Yeah - tyre marks, smoke, sparks, motion blur, buckled wheels - ive got it all planned. Should look a lot more dynamic once i get to that stage. Im just trying to nail the framing and composition at the moment.

Well a small suggestion that might help you dude, if you can put more buildings, I mean tall sky-scrapers on both the sides and make it look like a big city. put some more low poly or medium poly vehicles as props and these grannies fighting with each other to win the race in middle of this traffic with no tension and yeah put some heavy duty motion blur on the buildings and other vehicles. the good reference for Env. is Microsoft's game "Motor cross madness" Just a suggestion dude:)
A great job on modeling dude, I respect your style Man:bowdown:

Your modeling is in itself spectacular, Andy. :)
Compositionally-wise, however, it's somewhat hard to understand the scene. Are they racing or just getting into a scuffle in the parking lot of a supermarket? If they're racing, I think you need to change the scene a bit to reflect that.
Instead of the buildings being directly behind them, distance them further from the buildings and more in the parking lot. Maybe have a little kid (grandson, perhap?) waving a homemade racing flag far behind the grandmas?
All the best and good luck, Andy. :bounce:

I think, you need to use a more wide lens, and get the camera lower to the ground, so they almost look like giants, also their heads should be framed completley by sky, makes their heads the focal point because of contrast.. you also get a more dynamic image because of debris interaction with the foreground and camera, you loose that when the camera is further away from the ground... lastly you get a sense of speed, like how they make sports cars lower to give you an impression of more speed...
Its looking great, keep on it, I think it will stand out in the end... btw one of the characters reminds me of that pixar short Jerry's Game .... her hands I think.... great.

Im quite pleased with this now. The umbrella (just a temp object at the moment) being held up creates a focus and makes the image more exciting, like a battle is taking place.
I have lowered the camera, tilted granny 1 more so she looks like shes about to 'wipe out' and ive added BASIC cloth waviness to simulate the forces and wind being applied to them.
To make it more dynamic, i intend to have their clothes flappinf in the wind, granny 1's hair flapping, bent, skidding wheels, debris, dust, skidmarks, gravel, sparks, motion blur and speed lines. Ill also add some shopping in granny 2's basket, though it blocks up a lot of her coat and the mesh messes with the composition. I tried the scattering bin idea and to be honest, i think it made the eye focus on it, and it was hard to put in a logical place. Id like to keep the 3rd character (the kid in the BG) but im not sure where i could fit him in without buggering up the focal points.
The composition is not perfect - in fact, its a bit of a mess - but once basic lighting is applied, you can easily make out the 2 focal objects anyway.
I just want to finish the entry and i think im spending far too much time arsing about. If its simply modeling and texturing, then im ok, but i keep stalling cos im worried about screwing up the overall composition!
Thanks a lot for all your comments and suggestions!

the new one is great! I like the wind blow woman's hair! it's very good add to image! some little point is , in my opinion about composition you can lower down your camera a bit to make sky have more room than street ? because now center of interest is charactor face is a bit too high , don't know , maybe you can try, good job mate!

monstij - i know what you mean. I think ill keep it as it is though, because the sky is gonna be grey and overcast, so giving the sky too much space will make it look kinda dull. Plus, i want the camera to show quite a bit of the pavement so i can get all that detail in.
A quick question to y'all:
Can sparks, smoke and dust be composited later in photoshop? Im not too hot with 3d particles and effects, so a fair bit of photoshopping will be required to get the remaining detail in. Im not sure how this stands in the rules.

Here is the background as it is so far.
I couldve added litter, lamposts, boxes, street signs, bollards, bins and other little bits, but they would only clutter the composition. I wont add any detail unless its integral to the image and doesnt distract the eye. Also, the characters take up so much of the image, its not worth modeling what you cant see. The textures are gonna sell this, not the modeling detail.
One thing im really gonna try and recreate is the 'patchwork pavement' effect. Due to tarmac being laid, then dug up to lay down cables, do repairs etc, you have a very uneven surface with different tones of tarmac running in patches and lines. A lot of streets around where i live are like this. I thought it would be more intresting and realistic than having paving slabs. The only thing i might change is the house at the rear. Its based on actual reference photographs, but looks ugly at that angle. I may also add a tree (flat plane texture of course!) behind the house to give it more depth and colour, but ill have to see what it does to the composition.
Nice idea with the dog by the way. Im too lazy to model it at this stage. Ill probably just fill her basket with gin and whisky bottles!
Cheers for all your comments!

see, I tole ya, the lower angle works better.... now you need some kinda rally feel to it, like you said, lots of dust and debris, you could try having their carts toutching, so you get metal grinding metal, and scratchmarks, or making one of them even more airborne, more od a definat wipeout angle, its looking great but I think a bit more peril could be in order, or am i just too much of a sadist :).....

Ive still to texture the drain, the fence and the house in the background. Might paint a bit of sky, but ill keep it fairly simple, grey and overcast.
Most of the textures are from photos I have found or taken myself.
Hardly any of the textures have bump maps or specular maps. Not sure if they need them really.
Very nice, Andy. I don’t think things need much of a specular highlight, particularly if your going to make the sky overcast.

Background it pretty much textured now. Id like to add darker patches where rain has pooled, as well as some litter and bits of moss. The house in the background needs work too.
I will probably tweak the colours or the contrast of the background as well because the characters are getting lost in the composition.
Ive also modeled the cloth and hair on the grannies to flap in the wind too. Ive yet to model anything in granny 2's basket. Their facial expressions and props need finishing too. Damn - thats lots of work!
Gonna try and knock this on the head in the next week or 2. All thats really left is lighting and compositing.

Not that much of a significant update, but ive filled granny 2's cart basket with booze and cigarettes! Added a sky backdrop and tweaked some of the background textures. Also added the final facial expressions.
All ive got left is to get the lighting right and add the proper effects. Should be completed this time next week (hopefully!) Even as a thumbnail, this image looks kinda messy and bland. I really need to work on the lighting to get it to 'pop' and be easier to read.
Thanks a lot for all your comments and encoruagements!

Well, as you say, the final lighting will make it or break it at this point. The only thing I notice is that those packs of ciggies look slightly too large, or maybe only slightly too wide.... that's really pushing the art of nit-picking though, so it's safe to say that you could safely put all of your energy into lighting instead of package adjustments (heh :D )
The overall impression right now is sort of muddy, so: lights, lights, lights!
.
totally agreed !
dont let them get swallowed in the backround !
make sure there are differences in value, hue, and saturation level between the BR and the forground.
you might wanna consider adding some dust in the air behind them. it will help alot to make them the focal point.

Hi, wow I'm not disappointed and waiting for the final image. I've seen most of your works and really admire your style. Although it does look a little desaturated to me, it would be nice to have brighter colors. But oh well, it looks very cool though. Lovely and out of the box concept.
It looks a lot better with the more saturated textures.
All those details, like the contents of the shopping basket, really add to the story. Good work.

Developed the lighting further. Im using 3 point lighting and an ambient light, with an ambient occlusion pass and some photoshop meddling to get the tint and levels right. Added some dust/ smoke behind the grannies too.
I made the lighting a bit more dramatic because overcast lighting makes it look very dull and static. I really like the saturated yellowy tint seen here.
Not much more to do now - just refine the lighting, improve the shaders where theyre needed and add tiny details that stop it from looking horrible at higher resolutions.
Hopefully, it will be finished within a week.
Cheers for the feedback.

Ayea, the dust and smoke works really well. Perhaps add some grainyness there (easy fix in photoshop)

BUZZ! Err, no, you will delete the lights and start over. It's still very flat and "overcasty".... Try maybe a stronger key from the top left (that way you could get some shadow from the left granny being cast on the right granny... ties them together better) and then slightly weaker ambient fills, with more tint. This could look so much better, Andy!
Sorry about being a bit harsh, but this situation calls for serious action! :D

Noooo!
I tried pretty hard to get the lighting to this level. I guess its not my strong point. I agree that it could look better, but my patience is wearing thin, and ive got several ideas for more characters to make, as well as continuing working on my bunny girl short film. Im getting a bit sick of the sight of this image to be honest :)
Ill have another go at re-jigging the lighting in my lunch break tomorrow and see if i can make it better. Cheers for the honest crit though! You certainly know what youre doing when it comes to lighting and compositing!
Ill have to take a look at your thread for inspiration actually - im not using compositing layers at all - just 1 big render. The 3 point light pass takes about 40 seconds to render in 600X738 - i guess that in itself is an indicator that the lighting could be far more complex!
Ah well - back to the drawing board :wip:
What does everyone else think? Is it a pleasing image? Im not really striving for perfection or to win something, but just to get the damn thing finished to a half decent standard :p

I understand your feeling too Andy, i am in that feeling too...lol..i am seeing my image over a month now...this is killing me...lol...but what the heck ...your image looks great ..just make an effort to make it look better the days left (i mean about lights and stuff..)
Yep, the models/textures/overall composition/idea/etc.. are greats..just don't fall off the final with a no-top-notch light setup :)
As James said, it need more contrast.. I've try to add more contrast with photoshop's levels and curves, and the picture get better..not perfect, but better.
I think you should rework your light setup and focus it on contrast, add maybe more white to the main light source, you should maybe desaturate the background a bit to focus the spectator on the grannys...Well, i'm confident than you will solve the problem fastly, there is no reason, your previous character has all a great light setup :)
keep patience ;)

I don't know, I quite like the lighting so far...but eh, I don't really know much about the 3d process and lighting so I shall keep schtum there. Looks suprisingly action packed heh, I love the radial thing there, gives it so much motion. This has been one of my favourite pieces in the challenge. Can't wait to see the final image!

Ive tweaked the lighting some more.
After a few completely different approaches, I (and several of my workmates!) prefered the existing shot. Using that as a base, i tried to make it more contrasty and less flat.
Here is the end result.
Do you all think it is better? Im no lighting expert, so im not sure if i can do any better really...
Unfortunately, the textures look quite ugly at really high res, so i might have to do a bit of photoshopping to blur them or change the contrast.
I hope i can get the lighting sussed soon - im getting so damn sick of this image!
JamesMK

Flipping back and forth between the two for a while now... I think it's better
Further tuning can surely be done in post. Only one thing: it looks like you've got two different specular sources going there. Considering it's outdoors and everything, it might look more natural if only the keylight emits specularity, and the fills do not.
Then finish it up, and you're off the hook :D

Woo! Some kind of approval from master MK!
I know it sounds bad, but i just want to get the damn thing out the way and sit back and relax!
In terms of mainaining intrest, 3 months on 1 image is a real toughie! I want to render off my usual 4 pose collage of my grannies and post them on my site and in the finished 3d section, then wait for the judging, which will probably take ages again.
Cheers for the quick response. Ill turn off the specular on the fill light - makes sense i guess!

very cool idea
I think this lighting setup works pretty well now, tho' it seems to lack some shadows. did ya try to get a seperate occlusion pass and work it in PS ? it can make a huge difference !
another thing that really really bothers me here is that they (well more the grandma' on the left) seem to "have came" from behind but there's a fence behind ... it doesnt have the feeling the came from the left. the one on the right sorta have that feeling maybe because ya rotated here slightly to the right, but the other one doesnt quite make sence. maybe its because of the "zoom blur filter".
other than that its great
very funny

Youre exactly right!
They look as is theyre going straight because of that zoom filter. Ill try offsetting it to the left so that the center of the zoom is coming from the side of the shot instead of the center of it. There is a seporate ambient occlusion pass on top using overlay. Ill also try and make the smoke more defined and noticable so that it shows where they are skidding from. As poshspice suggested (on a PM) ill also tighten granny 2's grip on the umbrella - she doesnt look tense enough.
Ajsmac - looks good, though i cant really notice that much difference other than the slight colour ajustment. Not too keen on that grey glow that is forming on the horizon though. I liked the sepia tone because it makes it so that there is no 100% white value on the image, and balances it out a little bit. Plus, it makes it look a bit different to the rest of the entries.

Does anyone know if your final image HAS to be at least 2657 pixels across? Will I get marked down if you render it at, say, 2000 x 2500?
Truth be told, my image looks ugly as hell in an extremely high resolution, and my computer is creaking under the processing strain just to calculate reflections and shadow maps!
Could i submit a slightly lower resolution render and still be judged fairly? If i can get it rendered and compositied with no problems, i should have this wrapped up by tonight or tomorrow.
JamesMK
11-19-2005, 03:16 PM
w00t.
As I guess you've seen on the submission instruction page, it says:
If you cannot reach the desired full-page resolution, just send in what you have.
Whether it could potentially mean an implicit mark-down... I'd be darned if anyone less than a judge could give a conclusive answer to that
2000x2500 would still be fairly large though, even if it's not enough for a full page 300 DPI print... Tricky!

Hi again Andy!
I found some clips on the two competitive wheelchair guys :p! I'll try to discribe how to watch it, the site is in swedish..
1. You need realplayer.
2. http://svt.se/svt/jsp/Crosslink.jsp?d=2818 heres the adress, to your upper right you see a link saying "videoklipp" klick it! :p
3. Now a popup will appear, in the new window click "Axel och Yngve", then you can chose to watch "Rullstolsjakten"(wheelchair race), "Hålslag och sparkar"(general fighting) and "Veras födelsedag"(Veras birthday).
4. When klicking on any of the above mentioned the first time you have to confirm what kind of players you use. Mark both "Windows media player" and "Realplayer" and on the option below chose realplayer, then press "Spara inställningar"!
5. Hope it works and it gives you a laugh!

Not a nessesary update. Im only really posting this to use up a milestone. Its not really "post effects and compositing" but just so i can show you what the raw render data looks like before i run it through photoshop for compositing and tidying up.
The pic on the left is the result of my regular lighting, whereas the one on the right is the ambient occlusion pass. Ill apply it to the base layer using multiply, then add a blurred, desaturated copy of the base layer on screen, and add various tints, vignettes, noises and blurs in photoshop to give it a softer, less CG feel.
Frozt - Funny clips! I love the bit where theyre fighting with the zimmerframes and when he gives the old lady a new intraveinous drip for her birthday!
Finished image coming soon! Either tonight or tomorrow afternoon!

hiya.. the image is simply beautifull! and full of humor! :D !cheers!
bout' time ya get an occlusion pass out :)
just a tip - I use AO on everything I make, EVERYTHING. try also using it as overlay. it will totally burn and increase the contrast of your image, but in some local areas it can improve. just make a mask for it.

Finished!
I thought id try something different for the challenge.
Rather than a typical view of 'spectacular' such as majestic landscapes, big explosions, futuristic aircrafts and action packed battles, I wanted to portray a more mundane and unusual view.
2 grumpy old English grannies skidding around a corner in a small village fighting it out for a large stash of booze and cigarettes! Using typically slow and cumbersome mobility scooters makes it more comical because they are going so fast!

Unless there are any MAJOR issues with it, im done and dusted with these 2 old gits!
It might sound a bit cheap, but ill do my usual 4 pose collage (like i do with all my characters) and ill post them in the finished 3d gallery. Is it 'wrong' to include my actual final entry with this too? Or should i keep it to myself until the judging is over?
