Ive had an idea!

I wanted to stay away from the 'amazing spectacular' and focus on the 'mundane spectacular' - y'know, the little things that surprise you.

Im not sure if it will be seen as overly 'spectacular' but here it is:

Woman in hallway gasping in shock/ pleasure at the sight of her fat, slobbish husband vacuming.

Possible alternatives - handing her the TV remote, hubby doin the dishes, hubby gardening?

I have a few ideas on the composition that could really make it work, and the whole idea of just 2 characters interacting in a contained environment is right up my street.

Ill probably do it in a cartoony style so i can emphasise the poses and expressions. Ill make it very mundane and quintessentialy british, so soiled vests, cheap tracksuit tops and old furniture could possibly feature.

Ill get out my crummy entry level wacom tonight and attempt to scribble some pathetic excuse of a concept....

Sheesh - i hope this is gonna be appropriate. I bet everyone else is gonna do giant orc battles, exploding planets, circus performers and space battles!

Brilliant Andy.... I can already picture that scene as you described it.
I dont know if that fits the brief but this topic is actually sooooo vast, ones spectacular is anothers mundane.... looking forward to your WIP.

I like it. Vacuuming sounds the best to me, or dusting with a feather thingy and perhaps wearing an apron? wouldn't that be spectacular indeed. LOL.

AndyH
09-05-2005, 06:46 PM
but ive got a super rough 'mockup'

I cant draw for cheese, so i used max's bipeds to set up rough poses and camera angles.
The character designs themselves are undecided yet. Im just testing to see if i can create a 'spectacular' image given the mundane subject matter....

Here goes....

(see later post for image)

AIIeeeeeeee!!!

It took me 10 minutes

Hehe looks great. I had a different POV of it though. I had an image in my mind, the shot is from the door and you can see the shocked expression on the womens face from the side and behind her, and she sees the hubby bent over with his crack showing as hes vacuumin under the coach. Just my 2 cents.

Anyway, great concept, I like the whole Idea. Keep it up. This is definetely suscribed. Good Luck

Cheers folks!

Next, ill try and make it seem more majestic and 'miraculous' by having the room as really dim and dank, but there is a beam of light shining through the curtains, making him shine amongst the dirt.

I really hope this can get the message across - im quite keen to make this work.

Eheheh - thats the closest ive come to a true, literal "lol" for a while!
"I am Krondorrgh - the house tidier! I have 2600 HP (hygeine points)"

What do you think of the idea? Your comp ideas are usually down to earth and non-fantasy related, so who better to ask?
I would enjoy working with this idea, but a nagging pain in the back of my head is saying that the overall idea is a bit weak in context of the competition, and that i should do something like an orc/ dragon hybrid piloting a spaceship battling with the nubile elf warrior tribes of nippleonia...

Very funny concept. Could use a bit more of jaw dropping, eye bulging expression on the daughter and wife though if you decide to do this one. There's three months to do this, you've got time to think up of a few more concepts if your not happy with this one. keep it up.

In my lurking, I've always loved your characters Andy. As far as your idea goes, I'd say do a bunch more thumbnails with varying themes. If this one still holds your interest, then go for it. But its best to go through the brainstorming process and make sure there isn't some even better ideas lurking back there.

quite the opposite. This is surely the most original idea I have seen yet. Not only original but funny. It sits outside the realm of the average. In the spectacular realm, those orc/dragon hybrids (great fuel economy by the way) are among the average in my eyes at the least. Fantastic! I say roll with it! :buttrock:

Eheheheh! Yup, it was 10 minutes of hard work, but im pretty proud of it. Ill submit it to 3d world magazine and write a tutorial and i will be forever a legend. I cant draw for shite, so its the only way i can get my ideas in (accurate) perspective. I aint no sketch-master like yourself
As for the map to nipplonia, its mine! All mine!

Does anyone like/ understand the shocked look on the henry vacum cleaner? Do they have those in america? We have one at work, and its ace. The sheer idea of a smiley face on a household appliance that sucks up dirt up its nose is genious.

Cheers for everyones support - i guess its not a bad idea after all. Ill develop it further, but my current priorities are on my other model:

Hey Andy this is the sort of idea "thinking outside the box" that has a hugeee chance of winning! completely apropriate, if every1 else HAS done huge space battles, exploding planets, etc, then that favours more for you man, because it makes yours more original! best idea ive seen yet...

Hey man,

When I saw this as a thumbnail I thought that dude had been caught sticking that nozzle somehwere else... if you know what I mean ;)

Have to say I was half relieved half disapointed to discover the truth!

As for whether such a non-fantasy related image can succeed in these challenges, my biggest success was with such an image. In the Machine Flesh challege I took and everage guy and stuck a lightbulb in his head and in essence that was it. All my efforts before or since to be more 'creative' have fallen pretty much flat by comparision. So I say do it! :)

Best of luck,
Dave.

Anywhere that has nipple in its name is somewhere i want to be! Luv the idea for this one. I can totally see an austin powers inspired theme here.

Picture it....Fat Bastard in a BBQ sauce stained shirt bent over the couch with a vacuum. And Heather Gram standing in the doorway with a look of disbelief. Priceless...plus it's funny because he's such a...fat bastard, and his wife would be....soooo not a fat bastard.

After the comments kept on coming, i thought id take 20 mins out and try another concept ive been thinking of.

I tried a 2nd idea. It could go either way:

A Huge, fat ugly woman looking at a poor lad like a kid would look at a puppy. The bloke is scarpering.
Or:
A huge granny towering over her grandson wanting to give him a big, wrinkly kiss - the grandson is stumbling over trying to escape.
Its kinda like a modern-day, human version of king kong.

They could both work really well in a visual sense, but i still dont think they encapsulate the word 'spectacular' It seems more like 'terror' at the moment eheh.

More concepts will (slowly) come. Im pretty keen on doing something with grannies. Ill get me thinkin cap on.

THIS IS THE ONE!
Ive finally decided on a concept!
2 grannies battling it out on motorised scooters in a run-down english town!
Im not sure wether to have the green granny attacking the pink granny, or have them both fighting for supremacy. The guy in the white is a 'chav' youth - as you can see, he is loitering outside an off liscence and is a tad surprised to see what has just come zooming past him.

Gonna start modeling soon - im pretty happy with this concept.

Now i need to go on a depressing day trip to dudley to get some reference. That place is pretty much populated by chavs and pensioners!

meh its not me you should feel sorry for... i think i heard the ambulance sirens go by as I was settling down to a fish and chip supper, left em in an alley recovering from the whooping I gave em, youd think they would know not to attack someone who weighs 14 stone and had thick soled boots on that have metal sticking out of crevice in em...

Beloow, believe mewhen i say this you dont want to associate your good self with Chavs, they are a plague unto the british society... evil bullying crettins that deserve every beating they get...

Started modeling on granny 1.
I think i will have 1 skinny, craggy granny in a drab, desaturated cardigan/ dress/ saggy stockings getup, and have another one that is fat, stumpy and more pastel coloured. Perhaps in a flowery dress or raincoat.
Very early work so far. Im not sure how far to take the charicaturisation yet. Ill make the base shape and then play around with the proportions and form.

Why do you make the arms already bent forward?

AndyH
09-19-2005, 05:44 PM
Cos if you look at the mockup earlier on i my post, youll see that they are holding on to handlebars. Im not making these characters for animation, but to put them in these poses and modeling the arms like this help me define the creases on the clothes.

This is looking top Andy! How do you intend to get all those little details such mature ladies will have engraved into their faces? Lines and such like... will this come with drawn texture or modelling...? Great characters! :) How about a few piercings...

AndyH
09-19-2005, 11:16 PM
Shtl - yeah, the lines are a bit sharp, but thats the look im going for. Angular lines, flat planes and a blend of simple and detailed areas.

Posh - Ill probably leave their skin pretty simple for the sake of stylisation. Ill probably add a huge wart on her, and maybe a few liver spots. I definately dont wanna go nuts with the textures otherwise she will look REALLY scary! Granny 1 (skinny) will be dry, grey and warty, where granny 2 will be red-faced, blotchy and fat.
Nice to see yer back - i take it you had an ace time in barce?

Im pretty happy with scary granny's face now. Still working on her hair at the moment. Im not sure wether i should make solid hair (like on bunny girl) or thin, wispy transparency mapped planes. Ill try both, and ill mess about with the style too.
Started properly modeling the fatter granny as well. Still a fair bit of work to do on that.

Man this style of modelling sure is new to me, blocking in with rough models and all. Just one question - won't it be tougher to unwrap your meshes after you've posed them, since all your limbs will be in different positions? Really interested to know how you work.

Otherwise great characters as always!

I know what you mean. Ill probably make the whole character in the standard pose, but leave out the details on the cloth. Ill UV the geometry, skin it and then pose it. Once im completely happy with the posing, ill freeze the geometry and work on the the details specific to the pose.
Dunno if ill be able to update any time soon - work could be getting a bit hectic soon.

Here are some wires:

http://www.trex.org/modem.wires.jpg

Im a bit cautious about posting my wireframes these days because a few people ripped off my office girl model and sold them on tubosquid for $150 - the wireframe topology was exactly the same as mine.
Ill post some wireframes with my next update. Not sure when that will be though....

Ho-hum.. Another minor set of updates... Spent most of tonight on her damn hands!

Ive nearly finished modeling the base of granny 1. Im still working on her hair and ill probably add a few details like buttons, a wedding ring, a necklace and some shoelaces. Once ive done that, ill texture it and then pose it. Once its posed, ill freeze the mesh and work on the details like creases, flapping clothes, and her skirt deformation.

For this pic, i brought her arms down to a more natural pose to see if it looks ok. Also did a quick skytracer render to see what it looks like with basic GI lighting.

09-28-2005, 03:59 AM
hehe, great update. The knuckles on the hands/fingers look a bit weird (too large on the top, too thin on the sides?), but I'm sure you'll get it (I hate hands).

Im a bit cautious about posting my wireframes these days because a few people ripped off my office girl model and sold them on tubosquid for $150 - the wireframe topology was exactly the same as mine.

I know I keep a wire collection for refrence, but selling a copy from those wires? Sorry to here it man, you have some of the cleanest wires to learn from too.

nemirc
09-28-2005, 05:48 AM
Not sure if someone asked already... are you using SubDs? Those wires look very lowrez but the highrez char looks very smooth.

AndyH
09-28-2005, 05:53 AM
squib, yunisirees, JamesMK, - cheers!

ace4016 - Yeah, the hands aint perfect. I didnt want to spend too long on them because theyre gonna be so small on the final image, and this isnt an intricately set up character for animation like my office girl was, its just a component of a still image, so i can be a little messy with the geometry if i want. Theyre meant to look bony, edgy and stylised, but yeah - the knuckles look a bit too sharp.

6foot5 - God, no! I cant draw to save my life! So rather than attempt to draw a character design, id rather rough it out in 3d. That way, you can quickly change proportions, scale and shape and it always looks solid and 3 dimensional. Unlike my sketching attempts

nemirc - Yup. Using meshsmooth.

Trying to get granny 2 up to scratch now. Not completely happy with her face at the moment, and her clothes need a lot of work, but its getting there. Headscarf has no creases yet, shoes arent defined and her hands are the same as granny 1's - they will change to stubbier hands.
She looks a lot better in a relaxed pose, but i wont model her like this.
I actually prefer her without the glasses cos you can see the faceial features better, but i need the huge glasses to work somehow as theyre integral to the character design.
Im tryna make her a bit like this granny:

daddymack - Dont worry - ill deform their faces into the appropriate expressions once im happy with the geometry and UVs. granny 2 (fat) will have pristine dentures, whereas granny 1 (skinny) will have crooked, yellowy teeth. Ill make the faces less symmetrical too. I dont want to put them in thier expressions until i have them posed. That way, i can get it look good at the camera angle i choose, and have them interacting with each other. By the way - your avatar brings back memories! I used to love 'family dog' - i wonder what happened to it? Id love to see it again.

This is everything i have in its current state. Im pretty happy with it so far, ive just got a few more details like pockets, buttons and seams to add to the clothing, and to make granny 2's scooter. It will be a variation of the red one, but with a shopping basket on the front and a slightly different shape.
Ill probably tweak her hands a bit as well. The proper cloth creases will be added once theyre posed.

Damn, im soooo slow!
Spent 2 solid nights on uving and texture painting, and it still looks a bit plain!
Also having a bit of grief with the test lighting. My usual cheap trick of using Global illumination wont really be a practical solution on this because bump maps screw up, and other things like specular hilights and transparency maps go all spazzy. I might have to get it as best as i can using spot and omni lights, and then render out a seporate GI pass to comp on.
Grannys face texture is 70% complete (forgot her eyebrows too!) and her hands and legs are not textured at all yet. Still not sure on what to do with the hair. Ive gotta choose between sculpted, solid shapes or alpha mapped thin polys.
Egh - 2 months left and i still havent started on the composition! I needs ta get the grannies skinned so i can start on the background!
I really hope i can make a breakthrough with this soon, cos im starting to get a bit sick of working on it.

That'll do the trick. At print resolution, the only good way is to go multipass in order to avoid a lot of lengthy re-renders, so it's a wise choice to have different types of lighting layers separated anyway. And it keeps your options open to make changes until within minutes before the actual deadline

Granny looks kick-ass anyway! It's the return of the living dead granny from hell!

They kind of remind me of Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets. Not in a literal sense, but they just seem to have that same cantankerous spirit to them. Does anybody else think so?

MK - Compositing it is then! I dont have much faith in my lighting ability, so i wanna use GI in some sense.
Hoju - Heheh - i see what you mean. Cantankerous is also an excellent word. By the way - is your user name taken from The simpsons? I remember that bit in the monorail episode where homer says "You can be called homer junior! The kids can call you 'Hoju'!"
Classic!

Did she say "Yo" ?

Eheh - yeah, she does look a bit ghetto fabulous, but its just a test pose to show off her skinning. I didnt want to push it too far though - she doesent deform that well in extremes because of the way i modeled her. Doesnt matter though, shes gonna be sitting down, and any skinning probs can be fixed when i freeze the mesh and modify it once its been posed.

Cool pose.

At the moment it's quite obvious where you've painted colour into the heads diffuse channel - perhaps it's just becasue the base colour of the skin is very pale - even for an old wrinkleey like her :)

I really like the cardigan, how did you get that nice fluffy look into it? You using some self illumination?

Great work,

Great pose too almost like "YOU! YOU TOOK MY SCOOTER".
Really looking forward to Granny 2.
I love her personality that I feel from her character design. Always Insipring.

Quick question too. I take it your using Biped for the poses?
How is it you skin it so darn fast!? Your deformations are always great, such as cloths, hair and joints.
maybe I'm just not that great with skinning and posing yet.

Finally! A worthy update! Granny 1 is now completely finished. Im pretty happy with her. She looks a bit scarier than i intended though - she looks like the emperor's wife!
Now on to granny 2!

Her hair is polygon strips. Maybe its a little too straight? Made a few tempoary morph targets. Ill leave the finished expression til she is posed and in the scene.

Grorum
10-08-2005, 03:48 PM
Yes, she's scary.
Hair implantation might be a little lower.
Her dress shader looks a little rigid.

AndyH
10-08-2005, 03:53 PM
Bit of correspondance since my last update:

Swamps - i know, i always tend to go overkill on my diffuse maps. I guess i dont have much faith in my shaders or lighting :D
The wooly jumper was a diffuse map connected to both channels of a falloff. The channel that controls the colour facing away from the camera was blended with a light green so that the jumper is lighter at the edges.

malanjo, sergage, lauro_MX, C.A.U.T.I.O.N - thanks

Makaron - im not that happy with them - they were meant to be baggy old stockings but they ended up looking more like socks. They do the job anyway.

ScrmnTA - nice to know i made yer smile! I use biped for the rigging and max's own skin modifier to envelope it. Im pretty quick at skinning cos i do it so often at my job. I wouldnt say its particularly good skinning though - shoulders movement and extreme poses never seem to look that good!

Daddymack - heheh - they arent really meant to be despicable characters, but its heading that way! I guess theyre gonna be like the female equivalent of 'the old gits' off that harry enfield show!

JamesMK - cheers sonny. And wait no longer! She has hair!

eddieellis - heheh - i love that advert. I dont think shes gonna be flashing her grandson though....

Grorum - yeah, i thought that. I tried giving her a lower hairstyle, and it didnt look much better. Ill try giving the bottom layer more volume. The skirt will look better on the final image. Im gonna model creases in it once shes been posed.

That's certainly the meanest granny ever (boing boing)!

In terms of crits, I'd love to see the rest of her clothes being sort of saggy like her socks - right now there's a bit of a clash going on there between these two rather diverse fashion styles.

Cheers
/Sonny

EDIT: Oh, and as far at the hair goes, I think it works really well as-is. The straight nature of it gives an impression of it being rather icky, just like the rest of her, soooo everything is well balanced in that respect.

waw, that's inspiring!

I read it was considered finished but I'll add some ideas anyways.

you could add some red to her knuckles and bottom part of her fingertips, which is usually filled with blood. maybe some overall dirt to.
the hands looks pretty much untextured compared to her face. hands are usually one of the most focused parts of a character so a little more time on her hand-textures would be well spent time, imo.

maybe some little clipmap/transparency maps to lower edge of her skirt to make it less straight. not alot needed.. maybe just some around the side seam.

some dirt around her soles bottom part of her shoes..?

maybe some pattern to her socks, flower-pattern? but that might take to much attention from the important areas..!

her face is really excellent!! thanks for the inspiration kick!

Just finished granny 2! Whew!
Some texturing might change slightly (such as the glasses) but im gonna move on to the scooters now.

James MK - yeah, her clothes look kinda rigid. Once shes posed, ill modify them to sag, crease and rest depending on the pose.

Nemirc - Nothing fancy - just plain ol' bump maps.

Fellah - glad you like it! I loved the old lady you did a while back! I agree that the hands are a bit plain. I might improve the texture depending on what you see of them in the final image. Ill probably improve her sock texture, and ill relax and crease the cloth once its posed. Theres no point adding cloth detail until its actually posed and in the scene.

Shtl - shucks! Thanks mate!

I dunno if shes the smoking type. Shes meant to be the nicer granny of the 2 - ill try sticking a cig in the skinny granny's mouth.
Im getting a bit paranoid about her now - the more i look at her, the more i think her face looks like an arse due to that big crease on her brow. Ill probably relax it.
I might even ditch or remake her glasses as theyre obscuring her face, which im pretty pleased with - i like the nose and eye area.
