Gary: no worries, thats not a new idea, as i said, its just a little "intermezzo" of the prequel i work at. i plan a 4 pages story or so of the girls before they meet as a making off or whatever. could be fun and i get the possebilety to paint them again and again ;)

Madalaine: thanks a lot! :) i'm actually playing with the story parts for the comic since this idea really is fun. hehe, the sketch here was quiet vivid, i'm actually working on a darker shot inside the arena again, but the celtic excursion was much fun :), glad you like it :D

Makaron: Heya Mona. lol, hahaha that was cute! lol, yeah send em to a bath definately could be an idea, sum steamy fun in a roman bathhouse sounds fun... ;)

Rudy: glad you like the idea. yep a comic is on the plan, was starting writin a script, maybe its just going to be a paintingseries... dunno yet, but it's definately not going to be the last painting of the 2 :)

Alex: thanks a lot my friend! more later tonight, i'm still painting!

Archie: Hehe, thanks mate. for a further explaination, the girl on the left is Danu, the earethgodess of the celtic mythology, and she tells Edana (EDANA, ENA: passionate) "your destiny will lead you to rome, into the heart of the monster, that destroys my children... you will have pain and sorrow but don't you fear my child, i always will be with you..." ...bla bla. lol, for more words, i'm happy i have someone dear to me who's more talented than me in painting with words. at least i found a name for the celtic girl as well now :p ... i swear i needed that break, i started dreaming of the colosseum and thats not funny anymore to not be able to get 1 single moment of it captured right. muahahaha catch ya right next to spam a bit back :p

Ilusion Digital: weeee! thanks a lot Vic! best of luck to you too!

Shake: thanks mate!

Blaz: NO WORRIES!!! it was just part of the "things i do while i take a break" kinda sketch, the real thing still awaits its final composition. hope i can post my final sketch somewhen tonight or this weekend, so no worries, the fight continues!

Pushav: lol, thanx. hahaha nope, that was just my break, back to rumble next :p

CocoKnight: heya Fabian, hehe, glad you like em. I plan a whole little novel to this scene, so i can promise "you will see them again. But not now...." ;) lol glad you like em

Fredy: THanks a lot glad you like it!

Hey mates, thanks for your encouragements. I'm still painting on the new angle, hope i can post it tonight and finally start my painting... hehe, *excited jumping around between heaps of paper* crumblin back to scribble more more more....

Keep it up mates, keep on rocking!

Thisw wont have to do anything with the painting i'll go for except i needed a bit distance. Propably will be part of the comic (if i'd do one) of the story here. I already noticed a strong simularitiy to Linda's "Spoiled" so i wont use this angle anyways, but i just painted straigth ahead without refs, and sorta liked it, so i thought i'd post it just for erm... fun :p
now back to some other sketches...

WOW!! This one is truely awesome!!

Speechless.... :buttrock:

Hi Angel, i missed cgtalk for a while..so good to visit your fine thread as always. Lioness is my favorit here. Especially i like your girls cute face. These girls are fine, but not as spectacular as your previous stuff. For me that fit better (spectacular) and more exciting than this one. Just personal. Best luck:bounce: Now i have to find some time to regenerate my eyes. Am damaged by your skills.

Korline
10-11-2005, 07:48 AM
hey Angel,
think the angle is almost perfect, I would maybe push it even a little more, maybe 5 degrees down, but the angel coming down I think should be in vertical position, and calm not agresive, cause that makes him/her human if shows emotions, and I think that could create nice ballance and contrast at the same time, I'm mean like coming down with the power maybe slightly bent forword, but iI really like the whole construction now
later mate :D :)

How can U do that in 2D ?

:argh:

Squibbit
10-11-2005, 03:49 PM
good job, maybe the jumping girl could be a bit lower, missing
the scythe blade even more narrowly..
how about changing it so her chest would be up, her back arcing
over the chariot, the shield blocking the other girl's strike, while
the other arm was ready to strike, maybe wielding a flail ...

mmm, I so like those thick thighs u paint..

Looking good, Sacha! I like the upward angle on the new composition. However, it's curious that so much of the right side of the image is relatively empty, while the left side is clipped. Would it make it too staid to center it more? Or what about havinf the "dead space" on the far left so that there's a feeling of the chariot quickly having moved that length? Anyhow, just ideas, I know it'll be great no matter what!

Heya Hun! Liking the look of this more and more! I like the action in this last one, especially the girl on the chariot with the blue cape (which I love, the colour really enlivens the image), her pose is packed full of readiness and battle. Not too sure of the other girl's pose, as I'm not sure what she's leapt from, the ground, or the chariot, or something not in the scene? I do like this best of all the shots you've done so far, and you could still add the emperor in his little box avidly watchng the action. There's also the possibility of dust adding a lot of atmosphere in this piece too, kicked up from the wheels of the chariot. Over all, its a big thumbs up from me!

Hi! The new sketch with the lower angle is much better. nice work! cool head armor design btw.

If you would show more of the ground and add dust (particle effects:D ) behind the weels, that would give more dynamic to the painting I think. Now it appears like a spectacular moment that is shown in slow motion.

Maybe make the angle more extreme by showing more of the sky to make it more dramatic?

The pose of the girl on the left is great, but the pose and the attack from the one on the right looks not strong enough when you especially look on the right arm. This is just what I see....the one on the left will win:wise: :D ...maybe if she (girl on the right) would shore up her body with the right hand on the chariot, her pose would look more belivable. With her left hand she would have enough space to attack much stronger. That could be visible also in her face expression (hmm....mirror the pic to make the left to the right hand lol:D)
Just my thoughts ... maybe you can use some of them

Nice sketch and it looks spectacular! Waiting for the details. Good luck with that and have a lot of fun! (I know you will:))

This one looks cool! but... the other one had a better composition and framing I think, I see the elements overlaping in the same areas of the image, maybe you can increase the height of the frame, make to colliseum a little bigger and the charriot a little more to the left :scream:

and yeah ... the right girl pose is weird

Wait a second, that face doesn't look like it's in the same position of either of the faces of the women posed from your layout. Is this one of those women, or arte you just showing off again? :)

Anyhow, only crit on her is her mouth: If you cover up one side of the mouth and then the other, you might see that it feels like two entriely different expressions. Anyhow, hope that this helps... Not like you need help! Great work so far, Sacha, can't wait to see this more finished.

ok, 1 was the result of the former concept and some updates.
on 2 i liked the mood, i closed the rooftop of the colosseum gives it a more dynamic lightsetting and the idea, now this is what happens:
the celt makes the roman gladiatress loose controll over the chariot wich crashes into the pretorians behind em, the composition is sort a "bowling for comodus" ;).
As for composition thoughts, what always buged me was the too big space between the mainactors, the background, the lack of meduim distanced objects and the lack of a real foreground.
The diagonal movements in oposite directions so far worked better for me this way, also i tried to find better and more compact proportions. I worked hard on an aditional solution and hope i finally found it. this so far is my paintbase, i already started building up some of the coloring, so this so far are my actual linearts. :)

Of the three concepts you posted, I thought the 1st one (far left) was the best. However, after studying the third one (the one you chose I presume) for some time, I decided that I can see some big potential for that one too! "Will she turn around in time to see the charging opponent?" That question creates tension. I like it. I will try to stop by and give some helpful crits with my best efforts. I want this to be as good as possible! Nice job so far!

i was just thinking maybe its me being picky but alot of your faces look kind of ... expressionless... i dont know why in a way they do show happyness however in a more dominant way they are not that reflective of anyone emotion aside... the blankness of a model :P

make her SCREAM! whatever you need to do... for crist sakes its a battle! :D i know i ouwld be screaming my lungs out!

anywho ... that's my 2 cents

10-28-2005, 09:45 PM
Dang, that's beautful!
It's so cool to watch you work and see this come together.
The only thing constructive I could think to say is to wonder whether her facial expression, especially her mouth, is befitting the emotions that one would express in the throwes of battle. But it may also be that we need to see the expression in and among everything else to get a real feel how it works. So 'til then... Keep going, it's looking great!

and what if you make a combination of NO.2 and NO.3???two gladiatores are fighting to death and another one is standing beside the door and watching em,seeing what will about to happen for herself and waiting for her turn to step into the battlefield...both dramatic and action,...but just a though,,,,

Hi Sacha, :)

It's always interesting to watch you test out your compositions. While I do agree that verison 3 has a lot of potential, there's something wrong I think with how the Celtic girl has her head turn or where she looking. If she's turning to face her enemy, there needs to be more of a dynamic turning/twisting of the head and neck as she's "whipping" her direction as fast as she can towards the danger of her opponent (how I'm explaining this idea right).
Also, she has a beautiful face and expression, but I don't know if it's right one needed for the scene that she's in.

All the best as always.

thanks all for the crits and help. i agree 100% the celtic gitl is actually far from where she is supposed to be, a fawn is actually more agressive... lol. i was happy with her features but now that i painted the lionesses's face roughly, the contrast comes up quiet massively, and i'll go for a little expressionsheet after i made more progress on the background. the background actually scares me 50000 romans in the one arena ate a s**tloada work that almost makes me go crazy to even think about, specially cuz i know myself too well, loving all those tiny details painting to the highest possible detaillevel... i'll post a little update in the next seconds and... yep, no comment, the fawn actually is waiting to be eaten, and i'm going to change that as soon as i can. sigh, before i painted the roman gurl, she looked less lost...:banghead:

Sonja: heheh lol, thanx for the warm welcome. well of course i wont go for all 50000 ppl, but still, the architectural part of it causes me pain, glad i can cover most of it with little faces to keep it fun :p

Archie, thanks for that point, goin to tweak her arm in the next update :)

Shake: hahahaha button nose? fawneyes? puffy lips??? lol, yeah that pops up on automode on them :p

Falcor: thanx mate! Oh well, thats just my style u know. most of my girls have those babefeatures, wich so far makes em look that certain way, :D

Beelow: glad u like the compo. well i still fight with the dephg and complexity, possible and thinkable i'll rework the girls again, but so far at least found an angle that more or less has working proportions, all fields chosen more or less over a 5/8 cut...

Vahn: hehe thanx for mentioning. well l anyways think the face needs a repaint, i just was too sad to loose the face but the more i look at it the more i feel like its not working, so she'll get a new face soon :)

Elsie: thanks a lot! well i am still working on them and quiet unsatisfied with the actual stage, lacks of compleity, not enough dephg, but i had a few ideas, wich i work in next update to gain a bit of midground in the air :) birdies ahead :)

thanks all for the comments and crits, back to paint this out a bit more :)

watch it there man!

you are doing the same thing i did last challenge. you are over working one part of the image. or at least so it seems from your update. i would if i where you at least start defining more of what's going to go in the background now. the figures are at a point where they can be left alone and soak in your mind for a few days... so you can have a fresh outlook on them then. :P

These latest updates have an amazing amount of potential in them, in particular the light test (and to think you said last night that your light skills were no good :curious: ) , that's truly looking..er.. spectacular! (I swear I shall never use that word again after this challenge).

I love the more aggressive look of the celtic warrior now, and the lioness is coming on a treat! I really think this composition has so much going on, but doesn't detract from the main two characters. Can't wait to see more!

I like the new face expression but I agree with Vahn's earlier post about the eyes. I think it would be awesome to see her eyes shut and her face calm and confident. It would mean that she is a true master warrior and knows how to use her senses and whatnot. This concept of eyes shut is portrayed in the movies Dodgeball and Karate Kid. Maybe consider it?

Maybe it's just me, but I keep seeing sadness in people's eyes lately (on photos and stuff, when they are still) and behind that mean look there's a glimps of tears forming. Hm, two days ago I thought that it's very determined look, and some other time it looked very angry - well, this is what I call a masterpiece - when a still image changes and feels different every time you look. Awesome work! :)

Sypherr: Hey Dave, thanks a lot for that input, its thinkable i'll repaint her again once i got the rest of the piece in a further progress looking more or less ok and there's nuf time left for some paintup on her. Took me 30 mins today to separate the fighters from the background, now added 2 more layers of light and anotherone for the chariot, so i could optimize the flow of the piece. have done much on the composition tonite, part of it was to adjust the background and make it higher, basically gave the piece a bit more space. thanks for crits and encouragements, see ya soon on msn and keep on rocking!

well i felt like the vanishing point was too radical and i lost too much of the original height i wanted to show, so i gave the whole thing a bit more space and finally worked in some more blue to ballance it out and break out of the dominating sepia colorscheme.

Looking good, Sacha! Always nice to take a step back and see how the whole picture is working. It looks good.

The area around the back woman's face and to the screen-right of it, the forward woman's elbow is a bit hard to read. Too much going on there just at the moment.

The blue of the cape is striking, but it feels more surreal than the rest of the piece. The color feels to me like one of those only-seen-on-a-computer-monitor colors, not one as realistic as everything else in your piece.

And speaking of capes, the cape on the right feels like it was trimmed specifically to fit in the frame. You could try removing it altogether, or just let it flow out the right hand side of the frame.

Anyhow, just some thoughts you might like to hear (or not! :) ) Keep having fun with it!

Great update. Maybe it's just me, but I feel the celt isn't really focused on anything. I can tell exactly what the roman is focused on and her intentions, but the celt.....a bit confused. Her eye's suggest she isn't really paying attention actually (to me atleast), unless you are going for her thinking about her past and getting angery, ready to strike the lioness:shrug: . Looking forward to your updates:thumbsup: .

Good dynamics and composition! Only the character which is located to us more close I would show completely - with legs. And it is not correctly overwound in a waist a little... It seems to me, its waist should be turned to the spectator almost by side (at such arrangement of legs and a torso)

I'm always amazed by anyone who can draw figures so well. Do you draw these from your imagination / life / ref??

Sacha, I have two minor points:

First of all, I think the lower legs of the charging girl are a bit too short - or the tighs too long (I didn't check in detail).

Second, I think it is strange for a gladiator to not look at her opponent AT ALL TIMES. Now the girl closer to us is focused on something left of us. But then of course she could have been just looking away too - but it just seems a bit strange in this situation.

Besides this nitpicks: The blue is great! Gives it more natural looking skin tones - even try a bit of green too. All in all those girls are looking the most natural of all your paintings. Like I said - I see a winner forming before our eyes. I am really glad you found the passion to work on this again, Sacha.

I really love your work. I haven't checked your thread for a little while but something just struck me as very wrong with this piece. The closer girl (the one looking to the left somewhere) is anatomically incorrect. At least she appears that way. The way her spine bends is impossible. We have a full view of her bottom and the upper part of her torso is visible from a different angle.

I don't think the position is completely wrong. A very flexible person can do this, but it still does not look correct with the shading you have there. Work around the waist section to clear up your problems and consider possibly re-adjusting the hips slightly to make it look more plausable.

I'm also not sure why she's looking to the left. Is there going to be something else in the picture? I think the other fighter means her no good, she might want to look at what's coming her way. That's something you should decide on though.

Anyways, great work, it's very inspiring. I also really liked your orc and dark elf pieces.

Hello Sacha! This is looking pretty dramatic and it looks like you've been pretty busy on other stuff as well. I be honest and say the girl on the right needs some work on her pose, and think it's the backbone that's the problem. It seems to go up into the left shoulder blade, which gives what can be a natural pose a kind of oddness. I think she needs to be leaning with the sword toward us, building up momentum to hit the charging girl. The other girl has enormous energy and action though, and technically it's fab! :)

walrus: thanks for all your continious help and constructive crits, they always are a huge help and highly appreciated. as for the cape, i hope i'll get it right this time :) been practicing much on the elfpiece and hope i'll finnish this one with the new composition with the same movement i have in my mind atm... new attemp hope you like the new composition as well :)

The Clyke: THanks mate, hope the new approach works for u 2

Archie: went for a new approach, in manner of a better work. yeah the capes are pain in the b. hahaha, hope ya like the new ones better

Supersnake: thanks a lot mate. i tried bring in the same feeling for the lightsetup like the old composition, but a bit more vivid in the colorfalloff to get a richer color palette. hope ya still like the mood

Ace: you pushed me much on the new approach, hope you like the "fawn" now better, spiced her up and went for a more focussed and agressive attitude, so far am quiet excited by her power she gained. hope that is appealing 2 u :)

Authentic: Thanks a lot mate. hope you like the new girl, she should focus more now :)

Sergey: thanks a lot mate, the old girl was eeesh, corrected her when i felt like the piece sux and went for an ultrafast new approach where i ound the new composition. as for my new boss told me to work on my speed, the new attemp offers to do that. thanks for pointing out the ugly bonebreakers on the old girl, to be honest, when i looked at it after the elfpiece was done, i was scared by such ugly mistakes myself. hope you like the new one better :)

Elsie: yep you're right, the old one was a bit too spectacular (*hates that word seriously*) but i really love the effetc, blue has on a warmgrey/sepia ground, the uplifting works also fine in acrylics, thats what i use in traditional painting. hehe, yep, still same, working on the details atm :) jumpjump... hope ya like the new piece 2

Madalaine: thanks a lot!

mr freeman: thanks a lot mate. in general i work quiet freely, thats shy i make so many mistakes :p ok, to get my working progress together, i have to split the stages.
when i done the basic concept sketches, i got me as many refs as possible of historically acurate elements of roman and celtic designs, roman architecture and gladiator things, as well as clothings, armors, whatever helped me to get inspired and get a feeling for the stylistica, been reading a lot to get a picture of the scene concrete enough to visualize the idea.
now for the figures. the anatomical help that number one are my hogarth books, they simply rock, burne hogarth is propably the biggest help you can get as an artist to easily understand anatomy. for textures, details and basic things like that, i am happy i have a huge library collected over years in my work as 3d designer. whenever my brain is too silly to get things right, i am happy i can find something in 90% of all cases to solve it.
as for the figure painting, i'm usually working like a focus, i start very very rough, then constantly refine it. when i am unsure, i usually search for a lowres ref for solving the knot, basically the understanding of light is helping, that i gained from 3d and fotographing, but sometimes it helps to get a picture of a simular lightsituation to get the knot solved.
i always try to keep things as loose and free as possible. refs bind you much, and when i paint in acrylics or airbrush, i usually work 100% free to keep it fast and fluent.

Kyena: thanks a lot! hope the new anatomy works better, the old one was awfull and i almost fell off my chair when i got back to it. i'll bring in green on the branches decor i planed, just 4 u. thanks for pointing outr the mess on the old piece, hope you like my new attemp :)

Rawwad: thanks a lot mate. well, far from a winning piece, but practicing here speed and technique, glad you like what i do.

Wil: thanks mate. hope you like the new piece as well

Ducklator: hehe, i promise, i'll update more recent now that i finnished the 4 comissions i had pending :)A question: why all your women looks like latin girls? (to me) just coincidence??
erm... do they??? well, i havent thought much about that, but the roman girl, yeah is supposed to be latin, or at least mediterran.

Illusion Digital: thanks a lot mate :)

Korline: hahaha, thanks mate, yeah the elfpiece was a hard job, besides i had very limited time, like 10 days for 2 highres paintings and it gave me a really hard time to finnish them in time. as for now, hope you like the new composition too, i guess the elves so far have pushed me on the new solution quiet much and i also feel like, technically i made a bit of progress wich makes me very happy. dare u namin me ma'm again:twisted: i am cursed to be a bloke and so far used to live with it , don't u confuse me now:P

TemuR: hehe, thanks a lot mate!`

Niva: thanks a lot for the crit oon the old girl. i was feeling like nothing works with it so ie went for a new approach and i think this one so far works better. glad you liked my gws pieces :)

Lynch: lol, my 3d is abendioned like a graveyard, completely lost motivation for the atlantis piece i started back there. Well your amazing skills kick ass rock and i still am in love with your avatar girl, she's such a beautifull creation!

Aly: thanks a lot. you were 100% right about the crappy former version, she was so wrong it hurted when i got back to her. hope the new pose works better :)

Slav: hahah i know mate. hope you like the new expression, you were pushing me quiet much on the new expression of her, hope you like the snooty gurl she is now... yes i know, already painting hell outa my machine!

Queeny: thank you so much!

Anilduran: yep, planiung to have a huge amount of details mate. all my pieces usually are higly detailed, hehe,m i curse myself for that every time and still can't get away from it :p

Really great sketch, but you gotta watch yourdramatic tension/axis more. If I'm correct your girl will not be staring at her opponent but at a sound crew member holding his fiddle box. Or it's the producers assistant. :p

This definitely the one hun... it's looking amazing ven this far on. I'd agree with JM, that her line of sight does seem to be focussed on something else and I can't make my mind up whether i like the sudden crop of her foot at the bottom.. it works well on the roman fighteress, but not so sure with the celt. Other than those two teeny crits, I'm loving this sooo much.. everything about it is great! Really love the highlights on the roman girl's helmet too. *heart*

But then I should expect nothing less than brilliance from you m'dear. *bows to your superior skills* :applause:

Tascha: thanks a lot chocolate queen! glad you like my new approach, it's just started and i am working under huge pressure, besides i have to finnish 3 3d works this week as well :argh:
i really hope i get it done in this week. oh dear, i speeded up a bit, still am slow, the AD told me he had to paint 22 pieces in 1 week, and well, i'm training up my speed now...

Wow, much much better, I came to the forum just to see your progress and I'm glad to see you change the composition. The angle is much better. Be careful with the girl on the right since you might be getting in the same type of trouble with the torso-hips-legs alignment.

As a suggestion, lie down on the ground in the pose you want this girl to have, have someone take a picture of you from the angle you want. Don't be afraid to alter it but the perspective and joints will help you sort it out, you obviously have superior skills as far as shading and detail is concerned to hide minor problems.

Your entry has my vote as top. I love the work in progress you put in, very motivational.

hi hi

I like the broad range of rendering you've got going on in your piece and I'm wondering if you'll be tweaking the entire piece, or leaving the background to the imagination in places. As for the celtic girl's lip, I wonder if it is curving a little too far to her left (our starboard) for the expression you are going for, two dimensionally speaking, it extends out past the upper lip. This suggests to me that she's either pushing her jaw off to one side, has an underbite, or has a really huge lower lip. On the other hand, its one of those miniscule details that one can never be too sure about.

Your painting is looking really dynamic and powerful. I love the poses of the women and the colours you have chosen. It's fabulous. My only comment would be where the women on the left is looking. She looks a little distracted at the moment. It may be more powerful if she were looking directly at her attacker.

Really beautiful work. :applause:

Hi Sascha,

the lightning test nailed the atmosphere very well.
I agree to Zpapageo > just render it out now.

Just a suggestion. Maybe it could be helpful to add more space at the top. This gives the image a vertikal format and it prevents the impression of constriction within the scene. feel free to ignore this dude > there are more important things :)

Hi Sacha... I hadn't dropped in since your old composition...

This one looks much better! So much more dynamic! And spectacular!

I think the lighting works well and there's lots of movement between the girls (and a difficult angle on the nearest girl!)... i hope you can keep that as you tighten up and add detail. The lighting in the background works really well, and again, i hope you can keep the ambience you've got here as you work into it.

It's looking very promising... good luck!

Hahaha, hey budy, you are a fantastic artist and too crazy really.. lol.
What I most love in your work is to watch your progress, you always end up with a masterpiece, but the way you go to make it... well if I were your boss I´d be nuts...
It is fantastic how you can change your work from the first posts, and how fast you make it.
Congratulations !
I am loving to see this one. This one now looks VERY spectacular !

You show to everybody 'how much' you want to achieve a good result, and what it takes to get there, thanks for sharing!

Keep going my friend, and good luck!

lol, knowin this makes no sense, i still try to finnish the piece. 2 hours 17 mins left, been really suffering finnishing a 3d work for a client wich kept me 3 days away from painting.
of course work always comes first, but never the less, speedpainting against the evil timer again, tryin to make the final piece in a final run....
