Whats more funny and emotional at the same time as a sad clown I ask myself... Ur concepts r marvelous man! And ur character design... Im speachless.. I know that that kind of comments arent much help to u, but sometimes I just have to say at least something :) keep up the great work!

hahaha freakin awesome, even thought i found your circus parade very apealing and raher spectacular. haha, this somehow as even something Picasso-ish somehow...uhm... why not make a big oneman band of him, se looks like he can handle that ;)

I didn't get chance to get online this weekend... or do any 'Spectacular' work. Too busy re-arranging the house so baby Daisy can have her own bedroom! :)

But thanks for the comments!

zpapageo: Thankyou! I think all of the crowd will look a little downtrodden. Why should the dog get away with it!?

2xbo: Hello and thanks! I'll have to get another concept of that clown kid done soon, eh? I might try and get a more finished rough of the whole composition sorted next... so he will feature prominently in that!

Poshspice: But you have marmite on everything!?

Lady Medusa: Ta... i was quite pleased that the three kids came out of my wacom very quickly but captured the kinda look i want. Hopefully that'll continue on the finished image??

NinjaASSN: Cheers Blaz! I wish i could commit a little more time to the character concepts, but stuff's hectic. More to come this week, though!

the1st_angel: Hey Sacha... ta!! I'm still going with the big circus though! The clown's just a character from the procession. I just made into a bit of an illustration because i was pleased with him. He's inspired another kids' book idea too!! But i've got three ideas i'm already trying to work up... so he'll have to go sit on the pile of 'to do'.

MichaelMotion: Thanks! I'm sure he has got some magical tunes! Magical but melancholy! :)

coCoKNIght: Thanks!

Bua hahaha ha ha. Ha.

Ack, you've finally converted my way of thinking about clowns, Jonny. And believe me, my hate for Ronald McDonald and co. was pretty intense. It's like a whole breed of them I've not thought about, eh? He's fantastic, just so pathetic it's hilarious. Wonderfully drawn, his fingers seem a bit bony for such a fat little clown though.

If we're giving out muffins, I'm starving...dammit, still 2 and a quarter hours till lunch...

A quick colour test...

I'm thinking about how i'm going to do colours so played around with layer blending in PS.

Just an experiment to keep me thinking.

I'm not going to have any linework in my final piece so this isn't necessarily representative but it does start to look at the relationship between the drab townsfolk and the 'colourful' circus.

I'm gonna get onto some final composition sketches next.

Darksuit: Cheers!

Elsie: SO how do you think about clowns now you're converted? Do you want to cuddle them? They're very cuddly... It was a concious decision to go with skinny fingers on a fat clown. I wnated to see how it looked and to add to the strangeness. And Posh ate all the muffins... as usual... sorry.

Woo! Thass ace, innit!?
These little studies are fantastic, but when are you gonna start on the finished thing? I think youre ready to go for it as your character studies are looking great. 60-odd days left is a lot of time, but its better to finish early than not finish it at all like you did with your M&S entry!

PS - give Aly a nudge to see if hes still among the living - he hasnt updated for ages!

EDIT - i just read that you are starting the finished composition next - doh!

Hey!! I had a good excuse last time! Daisy was born three weeks before the deadline! And two weeks early! That shouldn't happen again unless Jane's not telling me something...

But you do have a point...

Wow jonny! These are great! You seriously need to get yourself into the children's book market, this sort of stuff on the cover would sell loads of stuff! It reminds me a little of the illustrations they had in the King Rollo books, if you ever read those as a kid, but a bit darker humour. Perfect for todays kids market. You could be the next quentin Blake!

Loving all these characters though, can't wait to see them put into the big picture.

You seriously need to get yourself into the children's book market.

Thanks Sam! That's the dream!! My big goal in life is to live by the seaside in Wales or Cornwall and write and illustrate children's books. Plus a bit of illustration. And comics. And a bit of concepting for games and film. That'd be great. *sigh* (I'm working on a couple of book proposals at the moment.... fingers crossed!!)

OrO: Thanks! Anbd there's more to come than just clowns! Contortionists! Stilt Walkers! Strongmen! Acrobats!! Horray!! Yippeee!! (Um... when i find some time)

kboss: I couldn't resist some straggly hair. he's gonna get some more work for the finished piece but he will keep his green straggly hair...

I really liked that black & white version where the notes where handdrawn. It looked so depressing! Even that dog looked sad. Overall the pic worked better without the colors.
well atleast more depressing.

Hehe, how do I think about clowns now? I agree, they're very cuddly. Imagine this guy popping up at the foot of your bed demanding a hug. Infact, I think I may employ a fleet of them, and unleash them upon my enemies at 3 a.m...

ooOooOps... i've been a bit quiet haven't i..? Sorry.

I've been a bit busy with 'other stuff' and my 'Spectacular' has had to sit on the back burner for a week or two. I'm hoping to get firmly back on with it next week though.

OrO: i can't wait to see either!!

Falcor_: I think i'd have to agree with you. As an illustration i prefer the black and white version. It's something i'll have to work at on the finished piece. Although my plan for the finished piece is more of a 'painted' look, so there's gonna be some big differences in rendering. And i've got to remember to answer the brief. But i am looking for a more melancholy spectacular than some folk...

Gonzalo Golpe: haha... you post made me smile when i read it the other day... and it's made me smile again today. I've just started reading books to my 5 month old daughter and imagining sounds and smells, and engaging with a picture is a wonderful thing. I'm actually working on a couple of book proposals and tried reading her the very rough black and white dummy book. All she wanted to do was eat it. :)

bwong: haha. Yeh!! Give me a prize!! Erm... This illustration is done but the contest has only just started and there'll be more illustrations to come!!

EricClaeys: Cheers... i just need to get that right as i head into the final piece...

rongen: I'll get more posted next week. And hopefully make your 'subscription' worthwhile... Thanks!

Arc80: I'm hoping to see a full image too!! It's a bit of a daunting prospect to me at the moment... There's so much going on in my rough... :argh:

Fiolka Alexandre: Thanks!

jeromoo: coming soon... honest...

Elsie: "Imagine this guy popping up at the foot of your bed demanding a hug" Errrm!? Now that would be scary...

grobouk, Nox, Mason Roberts: Thanks!!

lula_assassina: A souzaphone, eh? Thanks for the tip! OI thought it was a funny shape when i found the reference online!

Cmon, jonny!

ummmmm.... what can i say....?

I've been a bad boy...?

I've been very very busy but i'm gonna get stuck in again at the end of this week!! And that's a promise!! There's a month to go! (Gotta pull my finger out)

On a slightly different topic... Anyone seen the film 'Mousehunt'? I'm gonna watch it later because my house has become the front line in the war on Mus Domesticus. Jane's even taken baby Daisy off to Granny and Grandad's while i bravely fight the Buxton rodent population. The clever little feckers even managed to escape from a 'humane' mouse trap i bought. Ate the peanut butter, left a load of droppings in the trap and disappeared in the morning... i'm off to the hardware store this morning to get loads of the good old fashioned wood and metal traps... i've tried mr.nice guy, but they've picked a fight with the wrong vegetarian!!

Anyone got any good advice for mouse combat?

haha... i think we just crossed posts in the ether...

I am alive... although with the limited sleep i've had over the last few nights of mice and screaming girlfriends, i don't feel particularly alive... :)

I've not seen Aly for a few days because he's been having fun in Whitby. I think we've both been a bit quiet over here though, haven't we?

I think Aly's gonna be posting agsin soon too...

mice problem huh? hehe... I've been there... I had 11 mice in my room last year, 3 adults and other little ones (those 3 adults were quite busy). I caught all of them with those cages, but sometimes they even managed to escape.. but sooner or later I got them all. On the other hand, those metal ones that kill them r success for sure. Sad but true.. good luck! :D
And come back with ur great art soon.

I can understand the mice thing...actually in my case rats too...but they aren't in the house, they are in the barn, so it's a bit different. We have a cat to help deal with the problem, and it worked for many years. However, recently the cat decided to retire...don't know why, but now he only stalks the bird feeders.

Okay... so it's been a while coming... and it looks like i'm further behind than i was before... but hey... i've had a lot of stuff on...

I've done the odd doodle since i last posted but could never get the 'feel' i wanted for the image. This is the closest i've got and i think i can develop the mood and feel of the piece if i work into this.

The whole idea behind my spectacular entry is to contrast the rather eerie and macabre circus against an overwhelming industrialised drabness.

So that the spectacular is in the contrast... the spectacular is in the first vision that these pale coughing kids have of the trundling circus.

I figured that by placing the circus centrally in the image it focuses the viewer on their arrival. I've tried to lower the viewpoint to accentuate this and i'm planning on having a lot of the crowd looking to camera, as though they are looking at you... as you are in the road... in the path of the oncoming 'Cirque de Spectaculaire'. I think i'm going to turn the spooky kid on the tricycle to face the viewer too. The narrow strips of buildings either side are going to be dark and i'll try and use them to narrow and heighten the space occupied by the circus, and to hint at the claustrophobia felt by the inhabitants of the town. In the area behind the circus i want to make suggestions of the chimneys and mills and smoke and rooftops...

This should be close in composition to my 'Line Art' and that's what'll be coming next... please get any crits or suggestions in quick!!

Yeah! I was just sitting here a minute ago thinking "Hm, I wonder whether Mr. Duddle shall be updating us with more Clownage anytime soon...". Guess my telekenetic powers are working overtime today!

Great stuff, very busy looking scene - cannot wait to see this in colour!

I dunno why but that "Pies" sighpost in the top corner made me crack up :D

I just want to reply to some of the posts which have kept my thread alive while i've been 'slacking' (although it's because i've been a very busy boy!)

2xbo: Cheers! Sorry it's been a while... i'm gonna finish this challenge thoguh so there'll be lots of updates over the next few weeks.

authentic: Thanks Vincent... yup, i like the 'words' version too. It won't be part of my final image because i don't think that'd suit the brief, but i may well consider a sequrential set of images along this theme that'll incorporate text.

AndyH: More clowns on the way!! More colour and spectacularlynussness!! (and i need to pop by and say hello to your crazy grannies!)

MrFreeman: Glad you liked the clown image... the final composition is a bit 'busier'!! But it will ahve a background... although not particularly 'wacky'. More 'Mundane'. 'Dull'. 'Drab'. And btw... we get free spring water in Buxton!! There's a fancy tiled spring in the town centre which has a constant flow of the proper spring water and people come from miles around to fill car loads of bottles. 1000 years old and from deep in the limestone that buxton is perched on!

Madlight_1988: Thanks! I'm gonna try and stick with the general style, but i think it'll be wholly painted, without the linework.

OrO: I have done, but there'll be my Line Art and more interested stuff with colour (ooOOoH!) coming by the end of the week.

beelow: Sorry for being so quiet, but 'real' wotk takes priority and i've had no time to work on this... or even browse the forum properly... i'm determined to get this one finished!!

Dutchman: Thanks Gijs! I'm chuffed you like it that much! Keep looking in...

Sergey Banityuk: As i said to madlight, i'm going for a more 'painterly' approach with the finished image, although the the charcaters will have a very similar look and feel to the clown image. I'm glad you like it so far.

and bad gf(s??? woah).

the1st_angel: haha... i did mean 'girlfriend' in the singular. I don't think i could handle more than one... although i can't say i haven't thought about it now and again... ;)

NinjaASSN: 11 mice!! I don't want that many... my girlfriend is still driving round the country with our baby because she doesn't want to sleep in a house with mice!! I was very reluctant to kill the mice, but i need my ladies back!!

mybutterflyiris: Damn those pesky mice!! I've caught four so far... but i think there's another couple hiding in the floor!! I couldn't cope with rats!? I think a cat's a great idea, but i was always so sad when our cats killed birds and bunny rabbits when i was a kid... I think cats just get to a stage in life where an inherent laziness overtakes the instinct to kill kill kill. And they just sit around the house either being incredibly affectionate or incredibly grumpy... or to a combination of both at random intervals.

Elsie: Thanks! Maybe your telekenetic powers are what jolted me into action. Not bad coming all the way from Glasgow!! Could it be something to do with the 'possibly evil'...?

More to come... this week... and i'm gonna find some time to browse a bit and see what other peeps are doing...

Hey, Jonny - Looking good! I like the new composition. Like the idea to have the tricyclist facing us, too. Ovarall - and it's hard to tell, it's just rough lines - but the layout feels a little claustrophobic... You could consider giving it a little more room to breathe on all sides and that wouldn't even hurt your proportions... or not. Jam-packed might very well be what you're shooting for.

Either way, good luck with all the work you have to do, both here and elsewhere, and good luck getting your entry - and your family - together! :) (Go get them meeses!)

I like the claustraphobic feel of the image..it adds to the feel of the drab surroundings. Then with the circus central to it all, it adds to the claustraphobia in a different way in that it changes it and lightens it - a kind of bright closeness instead of drab closeness. I guess that change enhances the contrast in an odd way.

I hope i can make it... i really do... I'll be back on it tonight to scrub up that rough into some line art. Hopefully i can post that tomorrow...?

I've had a tough week with a bereavement in the family, tons of work and an annoying case of very painful carpal tunnel syndrome in my thumb and wrist. Bah humbug!!

But i have caught five mice! So my ladiezzz have moved back home!

I've been fiddling and fiddling over the last few days and couldn't get the straight on view how i wanted it... i couldn't get the overall 'freel' that i was after....

And more importantly, i couldn't show the industrial environment properly. The environment is an important part of my image because i want the circus to contrast against it. Even thought the circus is sinister and macabre, i want the colours to come out at you against the drab, smoggy city.

So i doodled this... inspired by the stockport viaduct. Which Poshspice informs me is the wrold's largest brick built structure. He's a goldmine of facts, don't you know...

Nope... i'm not switching to the 3D contest... just using maya to help me hit the deadline!!

I was struggling with the environment, so i tried to visualise my ideas in 3D. And i'm gonna use the (very quick and rough) model as a template for my line art.

There's still some fiddling in 2D and some cropping to do, but this is the general idea.

'Line Art' should be posted in the next 24 hours....

Nice layout (as were the last several, too.)
Lot more emphasis on the setting this time 'round... But you've all but lost the guy on the tricycle! Maybe some more space around him and less behind him (so he has a distinct silhouette) will help him stand out more.
Good luck!

Cheers Mike... an, yup, i agree with you... the tricyclist needs to be more visisble. I wanted to show more of the environment because that's central to my theme. I've had another play with this composition. I'll post it in the next few minutes. And then i might try fiddling it into a 'portrait' composition as one last alternative. I have to get onto the colour tomorrow or i'll never finish on time!!

Another fiddle with the composition to try and bring out the circus and, more importantly, the little fella at the front.

i'm gonna carry on tweaking (i'll try that portrait composition too) and then settle on a layout in the morning for my Line Art.

I'm liking this layout Jonny! It gives you a bit more space to play with characters... :) Looks a bit like Stockport... Edit: Heheh! Just saw your previous post... that's Europe, not t'world! I'm sure the States has got bigger stuff in it! ;)

An attempt at a portriat version along the same lines. I think i'm gonna go with the landscape version. it gives me more space on the ground.

So unless i change my mind overnight, i'll be posting my landscape 'Line Art' tomorrow...

and u r still alive! nice to see that :D h... about the canvas format. I think the portrait version works better. There is something big, something that is going up to the sky and beyond that limit.. and its coming to us.. its the circus. Its huge and spectacular. I personally dont think that u can achieve that feeling by adding elements one by one in a row. Or maybe Im wrong? Just catch the deadline ok? :)

evanfotis

I will second the portrait crop.
It gives puts emphasis on the characters, and has a more dramatic look.

Also, while in 3d, why dont you try a wider angled lens on the camera, which will produce some neat perspectices?

Cheers Blaz...

When i left the office, i was pretty much sold on the Landscape format... but looking at them now (after a halloumi wrap and a big glass of red wine) i'm thinking that you're probably right.

I'm gonna leave it until the morning and make a firm decision, so that i can get some colouring in done!

evanfotis: Thanks for the input. This camera has a pretty wide angle and was starting to make distortions i just wouldn't normally make in 2D. I'll need to play with the camera though, to get everything in shot in portrait format.

More coming tomorrow... i feel like i'm miles behind!!

Jonny, looking at your latest composition touches me and just makes me want to say

Will you stop noodling with your camera and get painting already!?!!

(said with all affection, and in a Kermit the Frog voice, just so you know :D )

All of the compositions have been working well. It really jusy depends whether you want to spend the next 11 days painting more buildings or more clowns. Just go with it and move forwards!
This one works really well to highlight the clowns and still feature the neat architecture. Only thing I'd comment on is thattop of the tall building in the upper right ("Pies?") is not in the same perspective as the bridge.

Good luck!

Hi Jonny!
Cool to see you continuing this challenge, unless you didn't update your entry for a long time! :scream: Your (one of) the best!

The new idea/concept looks very interesting and well thought! That contrast in the look but also in the 'deeper idea' will be very nice! :)

Also cool to see you focusing on landscape or potrait. As the final should look a bit spectacular ;) I'd prefer the portaitversion, as the 'tallness' will be very intimidating. Also the industrial stuff on the background will look better, as that bridge will look taller (I think).

But your still the master; I'm the n00b...! It was just what I did think about it. :)

All the best wishes ;) & Good luck on continuing :bounce: ,

So here's my Line Art! only 3 more milestones to go! Yippee!!

I've dropped the camera angle a bit and moved folk a little, but it's very similar to the last concept.

This still looks very rough and my high-res version is only marginally bigger than the image i've submitted here, but it's as finished as my line art is going to get.

I'm going to get on with painting the environment next in fairly subdued tones.

Hi Jonny,
It took some time to see the final concept from you, but I guess it was worth waiting for.
Nice to see this blend of the two concepts. The industrial environment will contrast well to the circus. I guess we can expect alot of colors now?
Good luck with the remaining milestones!

Here's the first dabs of colour. I've actually tweaked the line art a bit on the clown and the tricycle kid, but i'm gonna do any required line work as i go along so i'll leave my line art submission as it was.

I'm planning on keeping the picture quite monotone, apart from the circus folk. I'm hoping this'll add to the contrast between the drab and the spectacular. And help with the feel and the style of the piece. It may be less spectacular than some entries, but i anything with lights, bells and whistles is spectacular to the kids in this city.

I think the kids in the foreground look a little old and smogged out at the moment, but i'm gonna get all the city elements blocked in and then start adding more defined detail.#

I'm still struggling a bit with the monkey on the tricycle in the foreground (to our left, by the kid in the hat) but i think i'll wing it with the colouring in!!

It's gonna be a struggle. My carpal tunnel is playing up (ouch!), my parents in law are coming to stay for three days as a nice surprise (with a day's notice!?) and i'm busy with 'real' work. But i'll submit something next week. Promise.

And just to reply to some peeps....

kboss: Cheers! Glad you like the composition. I've actually come very close on a couple of occasions to starting a whole new piece with a lot less going on. I'll have to do that piece next. Some serious colouring action to come... but in a spectacularly desaturated styleee.

Dutchman: Thankyou very much Gijs! I'm gonna need a little bit of luck getting this finished. I just need everything to go to plan from now until Tuesday.

Norberg: It did take some time, didn't it? Sorry. I've been so busy with stuff and things and December always seemd so far away. I think i've neglected my involvement with the forum too... especially in the last month. Gonna try and have a good peruse today. You might be disappointed if you're after lots of colours... :)

Andy H: Thankyou Mr.H. Um... the red light was gonna be from the circus... but i like the idea of it being light from the city. We'll see what happens...

walrus: Hi Mike. It's the chalk 17 pixels from PS (and i increase and decrease the size). With texture turned on. I hadn't really tried the textures, so i thought it'd be a good time to try them out. Been changing them about a bit... not sure which one i started with now. Doh! I really need to get a good palette of brushes set up in PS. PixelPlay: I'm going to try so so so hard to get this finished. I've definitely got all of Sunday free to keep colouring in!

ahbeejieh: Haha... lunchtimes have been my main window for doing personal work since my daughter Daisy was born. Evenings have a habit of going to pot... i was struggling with how i wanted the perspective and i think a very basic 3D model allows me to play around with camera angles and layouts in minutes, rather than doing a fresh perspective drawing each time. I'm a big fan of the flexibility computers can give artist for experimentation.

beelow: Cheers! Aaaah... lighting... sigh.... the dreaded lighting... hmmmm... lighting stresses me out!

I've added more detail to the little city folk to the left of the image, and a little to the terraces (added a clog shop!)

More significantly, i've added a blue overlay between the red layers and the grey background.

I'm hoping to finish the city folk and terraces on the right hand side tonight... Viaduct and background tomorrow... and i've left sunday free for painting the circus folk.

Which leaves Monday to spot something terribly wrong with the whole thing, plummet into a major lifelong depression because i've made a pig's ear of the whole thing and wearily submit to judging.

Hopefully i can get that all done on time!

Nearly finished the background... tried to keep my distance and keep it quite 'chalky' and stylised. It's beens so tempting to zoom right in and render the life out of the details, but i want this piece to keep some semblance of real media and a rougher edge.

I think it worked for aly during the M&S comp unless im mistaken?

hmmm... i'm sure Aly does no such thing... and i've got far too much to do at the moment!!

But i have just realised that i've got more time than i thought. The deadline's tomorrow at midnight! Yippee!! I thought i'd have to submit tonight.

And thanks to everyone else for replies...

MichaelMotion, cLos71, MrFreeman, Vahn: Thanks for looking and the positive comments! I'm hurring!! And i will finish!

Time for real work now! I'll get another hour in at lunchtime and post a WiP...

now thats what i'm talking about~doing great there johny~the color blends just great man
yeah i did mine at work too~but best if u dont get caught~haha,i had to work with the job in the company and concurrently working on the challenge too.even came back on weekend telling the producers that i have some unfinished work to be done but it was for the challenge.:D

I'm not doing it at work!! I did a chunk of my Machineflesh at work, but that was during the demise of WArthog and i had very little 'real' work to do. I'm a bit too busy at the moment for sneaky working. Except maybe an extra 15 minutes after lunch. Although me and Aly come in to the office an hour early and leave an hour late so with lunchhour it gives us nearly 3 hours a day... if i don't go for a stroll down the lane...

And for the first time in years i prefer my set up at home... I'm really getting into my Apple and i've got my attic room sorted into a (very messy) work space! ANd my Apple can handle the file... my work machine is getting very chuggy with my spectacularly cumbersome spectacular piece!

Glad you like the colours... it's all a bit experimental with no time to change my mind!! :)

I was painting!!

But not on this... Booo!!

Only an hour until lunchtime... Hooooray!!

(And you've upset Aly... he says he always works very hard at the office and never does stuff for chalenges duriung work hours and that you'll hear from his solicitor forthwith... you wouldn't like him when he's angry... he seems to get taller and his voice gets deeper and all the bunnies run to hide)

Lunchtime progress... adding detail to the circus procession... and i worked up the bricks in the viaduct.

I wanted to get the less interesting stuff out of the way so i can detail up the front characters tonight.

Been doing some fiddling and painting so i thought i'd post a screengrab of the clowns close up...

You may also be able to spot my layer indulgence. I've been trying to limit my layers but all the detail is making my head hurt and i've gone a bit layer crazy.

MichaelMotion: Thanks again for the interest. I want the little guy to be cute... but oddly sinister...

Gonzalo Golpe: heh... cheers! I might need that extra energy for the submission shenanigans i'll have later on!

Fiolka Alexandre: Don't worry, i'm gonna finish with minutes and minutes to spare. :)

black_hand_77: If you were there... would you look as glum as the city kids..? And would the circus look spectacular to you if all you had ever seen were dark mills and belching chimneys?

beelow: Cheers! I've been meaning to pop by your thread, but it's all getting a bit hectic!

AndyH: I'm glad you like the colours'n'all. I'm pretty pleased with the piece so far, and it is a bit more saturated than some of my recent stuff. Although i know i'll spot something i dislike first thing tomorrow! And i'm not rushing it! I'm just hitting a deadline. If i was rushing, i'd have finished it last night! I did my machineflesh colouring in a day methinks!! There's plenty of time yet... 11 hours and 32 minutes to be fairly precise... and i only have to take four hours out for real work, and one hour to drive home, half an hour to cook dinner, twenty minutes to lay a fire for my ladies, fifteen minutes to put Daisy to bed and... um...er... that'll leave me loads of time... hmmmm.

well... no time for typing...

I know deadline is close... You have only four hours and a FTP procedure to follow, but...

I agree with all the red being a bit of a problem... I believe at least that big "rabitt" thing and maybe some of the flying puppets should have a little bit of others colors to stand out from the rest of the background...

Of course itīs just an opinion, and i believe your work is pretty good by now. Well... Itīs up to you!

evanfotis

Maybe some last minute more dramatic shadows on the red orchestra guys?
I know you want to keep the contrast from the colourless city/people, but some burned shadows may pop them out a bit. My twocents.

Other than that, I love the comp, and colour contrast in this image!

It was a grey day.

It was always a grey day.

The dark grey mills belched out their dark grey smoke into the dark grey sky as thousands of children scampered along cobbled streets to be greeted by the dark grey foremen of the dark grey mills.

But something felt different this morning.

There was the faint burble of music and a strange red tint to the dark grey clouds.

Joseph stopped on his way to the dark grey clog factory where he spent most of his dark grey days. He could see shafts of red light spilling through the archways in the dark grey viaduct. And from the other side of the dark grey terraces he could hear music. It wasn't beautiful, but he so rarely heard music that it seemed to him to be so very beautiful.

Other children stopped.

A thousand children stopped.

A thousand children breathing light grey mist into the dark grey air.

And then it appeared between the dark grey arches.

A burbling, trundling, tumbling circus of scarlet and ivory shrouded in a creeping, crawling, inquisitive mist.

As it edged towards him along the dark grey cobbles, Joseph realised that he had never seen anything like it. He had never seen anything so colourful. He had never seen anything so red. So very very red.

In all of his dark grey life, Joseph had never seen anything so Spectacular!

eDiT: I couldn't post this story last night because i was typing with one hand with Daisy on my knee before whizzing her off to hospital for the doc to check her little pink head... but here's my original post from last night. Sorry if it's wrong in the spectacular rule book (?), but little Daisy has to take priority... even over my doodles...

I've made a couple of tweaks but time is short because my 7 month old daughter Daisy has banged her head and been very sick all over her mummy!

So we're off to the hospital...

i'll have to add the story stuff when we get back! I thought i'd better submit in case we have to wait a long time!!

i'll talk about the red later...it's a stylistic thing... i like it when it's printed! :)

Looks great. Very stark and bleak and industrial, and yet colorful and macabre too.

Have you played the game Psychonauts? You should (in your copious free time!) It's a lot of fun, some really great writing, and a visual style you'd get a kick out of. Not to mention that your characters seem like refugees from the game's final level.

Cheers!

There's a name is this bussiness for colors that stand against eachother, you know: Red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple and there's also grey and pink (yep, better believe it), I don't know how you call this in english, but that's exactly what youve done, well not grey and pink, but slightly darker, so.. black and red! I thought i'd post the image again with the back story. Sorry i didn't get this posted last night. I'm gonna edit this post and reply to all you folk who've been so splendid to me!

Monsitj, stefan, Tranchefeux: Thankyou for the words!

Paperclip: Thanks Theresa... hope you don't mind that it's all so red! Haha... part of the story and the big plan, i'm afraid...

AndyH: Gotta say a big thanks for all the encouragement during the course of the challenge... and the goading when i wasn't posting! (i was very busy with 'proper' work!)

Evanfotis: Thanks for the suggestions, but i was too short of time to really think about any changes last night! Glad you like it.

Slav: Ta! (But there's definitely stuff to crit!)

Groubouk: Thanks! I need to look at your piece... not had cahnce for the last week or so and i love that long armed creature and the flying car! Is it a renault?

ChrisThatGuy: Thanks... I wanted the simple palette as a stylistic thing. Not sure if it's worked perefectly but i'm pretty happy.

WAlrus: haha! So glad you like the image. I haven't played Psychonauts, although ironically i started roughing out a comic called Psychonaut when i was about 19...

GonzaloGolpe: Thanks! And Daisy's just dandy!

Matt: Thanks for the post Mr.Dixon. I think the sketches helped, although MAya reeeally helped... :)

ahbeejieh: I have certainly come to realise that evenings of art don't always go to plan once you have a family! And thanks about the picture!

Mythmaker, pixelplay: thankyou very much!

Sacha: Cheers! It was a close thing in the end. I'm gald i finished it at the office, because it'd have been frustrating if i'd been that close and had to spend the evening in hospital as the deadline ticked away!

Fish-KAart, zpapageo, cLos71, beelow: Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

sh@ke: Cheers Michael... and thanks for all the comments over the course of the challenge. Sorry i haven't checked out your piece foe a few days. (I'll look in today)

MichaelMotion: Cheers for the comments. The piece is supposed to be all about contrast... not just colours, but also the city kids and the red (spectacular?) circus. The colours were an effective way for exaggerating that contrast.

Lady Medusa: Thankyou! And i thought it was funny about the deadline... Luckily for me there was another 24 hours to go!

AndyH (again)... I'm a wannabe kids book creator trapped in a concept artists body... what can i say...?? (Maybe i should do something about it?)

Yay! You finished it! And fantastic it is too! This is one of those images that first makes you go wow! Then it kinda grabs hold of you and won't let go until you've sucked every detail out of it and appreciated it in full. And then of course there is the description. I've tried my hand at writing for kids, it's not easy, but you make it seem effortless! Your master and servant entry had some promise as a kids book, but my god, this reeks of children's masterpieceness! Hahaha... it's all in the interpretation! And i think it says more about you! ;)

They were supposed to be leotards, but the one on the left does look a bit bare breasted, doesn't she?

Squibbit: I was chuffed to get it all done... but there were a few intense hours over the last week or so!

Korline, OmeN2501, Kazım Doku, Cr@sH, rawwad: Thanks!!

Arc80, Vahn: Thankyou both and i really enjoy finding time for cgtalk challenges... even when i don't finish them... *ahem* grandspaceoperamasterandservat...*cough*... can't wait to see what's coming next!

Zepyhri: Thanks Sam! I'd love to write and illustrate children's books. That's where i see myself in a few years... writing and illustrating kid's books in an old house by the sea in Wales. And i'm really flattered by your description of my picture. As a kid, I always loved illustrations where you could go back and stare at the details... That's why i started drawing as a nipper i think... Thanks again!

dunkelgold: Ta Benita! The description was a little rushed in the end, but i had been thinking about the story for weeks and weeks. I suppose that helped them intertwine in my head... did the words foit the picture or did the picture fit the words?

Hi Jonny, it's Pat Piper.

It's my first post in your thread, and the reason that I hadn't done it before was only because you were already getting all the attention and I didn't feel that my comments were needed.

Anyway, now that the contest has ended, I want to congratulate you on creating such a fine piece. The characters all look like they are sulking, but I could tell that you really had fun painting them, it really shows. I really like your story and concept from the start and I'm amazed that you could even finish it with all the tasks at hand. You could have been a juggler in that pic. Haha..Best of luck! :D

I have been lurking on my favourites threads and now that my own deadline stress is over I have time to comment here and there.

I am very much in love with the whole idea here. The expression of all those guys is such a cool contrast to the overall scheme, specially since this theme would have been so easy to portrait normally (heck I know I was thinking of this myself..happy happy joyful carneval stuff).
The fact that you give it a totally different twist and still have it look extremely specactular makes this one of my favourites in the whole challenge.
The absolutely original style and approach on how you illustrated the whole idea (color, style, composition) is just the last drop to this awesome entry :)

Wish you the best luck this this.

hello there! I must say that I was really hoping that u'll finish that image in time. Since u stopped working on it for a while, and the deadline was heading towards us so quickly, there was a doubt and sadness at the same time in me. But u really did an amaizing job in last few days and I couldnt even keep up with ur updates anymore :) congratulations for ur fantasting entry, good luck and all the best in the voting process and sorry for all the mistakes in this post :) cya in next challenge!

Congratulations. You have finished a really wonderful, freaky piece that has heaps of atmosphere. You can almost hear the music in it. I love all the details, the choice of colours, the composition and the theme. Well done !

OooOOoh... it's not even a week but i can't cope with the suspense... i don't think i'm very patient. Ho hum. Mibus says the results will be quicker than the last challenge so fingers crossed for an announcement before xmas!

dunkelgold: haha... the mationettes were fun to do. I had to keep them pretty simple because of their size on screen and because they were set back. It's always so tempting to pile in detail when you can zoom so close in Photoshop! But it's also immensly satisfying to get the look you want with a limited amount of brush strokes.

tuck: Thanks... There's a little bit of variation in style and tightness in this piece between the city kids and the nearest circus folk, but that was intentional and hopefully they sit well together.

Pat Piper: Hello Pat... Thanks for the comment. They do all look a bit sulky. Maybe i overdid it! And i did have a lot of fun doing it! I've actually realised that my juggler kinda went awol in the finished piece!

Ranath: Cheers... glad you find it interesting... :)

Kyena: Hi Natascha! Thankyou for the very kind words! I'm considering doing a few more illustrations of my circus idea... but then there's a ton of other stuff i need to do!

NinjaASSN: Cheers Blaz! I'll forgive your mistakes too! :p I was kinda forced to stop working on it because of other commitments and my carpal tunnel probelms. I'm just glad i had the time to get it finished.

Lync: hehe... cheers. I love getting comments where people can imagine the music and action. It also makes me wonder what different music different people imagine....

Anyway.

I was getting some stuff together to update my site and did this gif for my 'how?' page, so i thought i'd post it.

Hi Squibbit... i did a bigger version but it was a whopping size! This one's 360k... so i need to optimise it a bit better if i want it bigger. I'm thinking about doing the same thing for a few close ups... like the big clown's face. I'll post a link when i get them online (probably midweek?)

I've got a bunch of other stuff to do for my site because i haven't updated for ages and ages... so i was just getting loads of gumpf in a folder and thought this would be worth posting. I've also started another illustration with some of the same characters (asking directions in an old Model T Ford!)

Just wanted to say a big thanks for all the comments i've received since the results came out and an even bigger thanks for all the suggestions, comments and encouragement i received whilst the challenge was underway!

It was a struggle finishing this challenge because amongst a busy day job in the games industry, various bits of freelance and some personal projects i had very bad Carpal Tunnel where my drawing hand became a bit useless for most stuff in November. Luckily it was getting better in the last week or two of the challenge and i managed to get this piece finished. I've actually snapped a tendon on my ring finger on my left hand now. My splint is playing havoc with my Photoshop shortcuts!!

I also wanted to mention my grandad. He died three weeks before the end of the challenge, and the story behind my piece was inspired by him. He was called Joseph Duddle (like the kid in my story) and his dad was a master clog maker (hence the clog references), although my grandad went on to be a bus mechanic (after serving in the British Army in North Africa and the invasion of Italy in WW2). He was from Salford in Manchester which inspired the environment in the piece. I started the piece when he was ill and planned on showing it him, but i was a bit slow. Ho hum. But i'm sure he'd have a big grin on his face if he knew a picture inspired by the grimy Manchester he knew as a kid had won a prize!

Thanks again for all the 'Congratulations'... gotta do some work now...

See ya'll in the next one!
