Hi guys! Im glad im actually able to enter this challenge, because i just had a major computer crash including a virus, internet failure and a little loss of data..... :( but now my computer seems to be working properly again and im able to participate in this challenge....

My idea is an army breaking through barricades. all set in the 18th - 19th century. (btw, does it have to be set in modern times??) with a lot of smoke and screaming , dying soldiers in the background. a very desperate scene, but breaking through that barricade is their only hope!!
im not quite sure about the background story of the people. they have to oppressed or something of course :)

good luck Zongo with your idea :scream:

Opposition isn`t added yet for better overview.

Im thinking of adding a horse jumping the barricade. i know, VERY difficult, but hey, VEEERY cool!! :)

Zongo
09-05-2005, 01:25 PM
mh, i just realised that this scene wouldn`t be very spectacular at all for the viewer :). so i will HAVE to add the horse breaking the barricade in a spectacular way. it might break the wood and open the way for the following soldiers, taking the defenses by surprise.....

i think i`m gonna add some drummers and pipers or trumpeters, too, for more detail.

or something like that....

i dont know... damn it, this is getting far too big :)

Good luck with your idea. War always offers different specular views, so youre on the right way to get one it.

Zongo

yes, i hope so. but i think it still doesnt have the final something that makes it REALLY spectacular. i`ll probably really have to go for the horse somehow...

gardogg
09-07-2005, 05:35 AM
I'm gonna have to warn you that although that sketch is cool, I'm not sure it is portraying something "spectacular" seeing as we have all seen scenes like this in war movies. It seems that you already realize this. The horse thing could save this idea though... Or maybe you may need to consider some other directions. Like maybe some army guy in such rage that he lifts an opponent from his feet, high off the ground with an upward thrust of his gun (the kind of gun with the knife thingy on the end) while yelling at the top of his lungs with rage. THAT would be tight. And don't think using this idea is stealing my idea... for it was your sketch and thinking in terms of the emotion you have already created that led me to this idea. So you are welcome to use it if it tickles your fancy ;) I must admit that my mom helped me to develop my idea. Sometimes another's viewpoint can be really helpful... Good luck man!

Zongo
09-07-2005, 08:42 AM
hey, thanks gardogg,
i was thinking the exact same thing!!
but as you said, i`ve alrady decided to add one or two horses crashing through the wooden barricades, maybe some infantry doing stuff you suggested. they all break through with sheer rage and (not too much of course ;) ) brutality
(oh my god, that sounds as if im totally obsessed with this war stuff :))

and the longer i think about it, the more i like your idea.... :) thanks for the hint, gardogg!!

mh, i just realised that this scene wouldn`t be very spectacular at all for the viewer :). so i will HAVE to add the horse breaking the barricade in a spectacular way.

Don't forget to post an update of your scene concept.

i want to give him one of those rolled blankets on top of the backpack. but i cant think of a way to modell it.

Depending on your program....I'd draw out the wrap in 2D. Then extrude the edges out. Last add thickness to the edges. Tweak the mesh to add wrinkles, etc.

Zongo
09-08-2005, 06:14 PM
:bounce: why didn`t i think of that?? of course, you are right, thats the way to do that! thanks nichod!!

btw, do i have to make the sketch exactly as my final image? i don`t think i`ll be able to draw a horse in a cool pose... :)

I am looking forward for your progress. I think it will be spectacular too.

This model is coming along great! Keep it up. And no, your concept doesn't have to match the final image exactly. Its just there to give yourself and others an idea of where you're heading. I'm doing my concept sketch right now. Time for bed its 1:30am here! Yikes!

Nichod: i know, but i want to get going with the modeling. i`m still not quite sure about the final scene. i`m going to change the focus to a massive cavalry charge breaking through...

Gardogg: thanks :) it`s a simple 512x512 dark metal texture with a little bit of rust, a procedural turbulence map for bump and reflection....

denverbz: thanks, we will see how much time i will be able to invest in this scene. i have to lern for university :)

Nichod
09-10-2005, 09:09 AM
Why not stick with your current concept. Only rework it. Have the scene be of a cannon crew and the surrounding soldiers being impacted by the opposing forces cannonball. Soldiers being tossed around, smoke and dirt crashing into the air and of course pieces of the cannon flying around.

Zongo
09-10-2005, 09:20 AM
mh. sounds interesting. but i wanted to catch this rage and force of a charging cavalry unit. their impact can be much more spectacular than a cannonball. i want to have bodies and wooden splinters adn all sorts of stuff flying around. but i`ll have to think about your idea, too. thank you  !

Thanks for the tip. Whatever you did on that texture, it looks sweet.

Keep up the good work and I like the sound of where you are heading with this. I think that many of the ideas that have been suggested can ALL be implemented for additional spectacularness. That means you can throw in a cannon ball knocking down a few guys, a horse leaping over/through the fence, and the calvarymen bull rushing with one guy thrusting his bayonnet so furiously through his opponent that he lifts the opponent several feet from the ground. These ingredients would combine to make QUITE an image.

Just my two cents ;)

These are the barricades. The textures aren`t final, i`m not quite sure how to texture the ground. at the moment it`s a 4000x2000 map, but it might run me into memory problems. is it possible to use a procedural map? or does it not have enough detail?

Very nice terrain Zongo.

Good luck

fgcity
09-13-2005, 07:34 AM
Why do you have a terrain texture that big ?

From the scale of the scene i would say you don't need that since the objects and characters are big enough. If you would have a scene with a terrain in 3D scale lets say 1 km
than you would need a large texture to cover it.

I hope i helped

Good stuff!

I would say that you're definately going to need the high-res texture for the floor, particularly when you do your fianl print reolution render. I always work at high resolutions even for game stuff - you can always make these things smaller but, of course, never bigger.

I'd be suprised if you did encounter memory problems at 4000x2000, I regularly make textures up to 4096x4096 and never encounter probs and my PC is nothing that special -although showing lot's of hi-res maps in the view port makes things a bit slow but that's easily fixed.

If you are worried about in then you could go for something semi-proceedural. Take two or three smaller textures and tile them 6 or 7 times, then use either another image or proceedural noise maps to mask different areas out. With a bit of tweaking you can get some cool results and keep the resolution high, the texture uage low all without any determinable tiles in your textures.

Personally though i'd stick to the hi-res texture you've already got - looks awesome. Good luck with the image.

PROFG, YUNISIREES, GRIN3D: thank you guys :)!

DOGMAD: :D ... good luck to you!

SWAMPS: yes, the 4000x2000 map doesnt crash my memory, but i already have about to or three of those on the soldier model and i havent modeled or textured the horse yet. and i want the scene to be crowded!! so i don`t really know if thats too much AND i only have 512mb of RAM. but i`m defenitely going to buy another 512 before the end of the challenge. so i guess i will stick to the hires maps, as you said. thank you...

DRFX: i thought so, too. but i looked it up on a few reference pictures. i`ll have to see in the final image how many objects are reflected and maybe twaek the reflectivity a little... thanks.

Now I don't know much about those cannons, but somehow that horse (and the horseman) looks way too small, compared to them.

Zongo
09-13-2005, 09:33 PM

gardogg
09-14-2005, 02:43 AM
He's right, the horse should be larger... the guy looks about the right size though in relation to the cannons.

I would suggest that you add some grass in scattered places. Maybe find some reference pictures that depict the landscape you are trying to portray. The ground looks great so far but I think grass and some rocks and stuff would add additional realism. You should add some hoof pints and stuff too, kind of tear up the turf a bit.

Make sure you add lots of dead bodies at some point! That always is cool ;)

I think you are doing a great job so far and am getting more and more excited about your project as I see it progress. Good luck!

Also, I wanted to mention to you that I was looking at a book of artworks done by Remington today. That guy was really a hardcore, awesome artist. If you want good ref pics that show soldier guys on horses, he is a good place to start for help. He had an amazing feel for horse anatomy and exaggerated the muscles well. When I go back to finish up my quarterhorse, I'm definitely gonna use his stuff for reference. You can also get help on dynamic horse galloping poses from his work. His work can also help you with modeling the face of the "western man," the wild wild west cowboy look. You the man!

Very nice work here and I have the perfect solution for your background. Have the horse running down a steep hill. In this case, you can still be looking up at the horse and rider through the camera but the horizon line could be brought way up only revealing a little bit of sky. This will allow you to save a lot of time trying to create a massive field full of soldiers and weaponry. By raising the horizon line and making the horse run downhill, the majority of the time you have left can be spent fine tuning what you already have and adding small details. Simplicity is best, especially at this point in the contest (12 days left). Hope you like my suggestion!

Zongo
11-24-2005, 10:59 AM
Hey gardogg,
thanks for the idea, i thought about this already, but i think a few soldiers in the background will make it more spectacular. and besides, the main part of the army will be behind the wooden barrickades the horse has just jumped :)
the rider is supposed to be a little ahead of his comrades, fighting bravely and alone for the flag...
