All the mood, and effects are extraordinary... fantastic, on thing is sure, you're near to the end... very spectacular... just a last comment... a detail which disturb me more now, I don't see it before...
...the car just under the plane's nose... seem deformed, sure, but smooth deformed... not like a real car in metal... but like a rubber car... but maybe I do a mistake... sometimes, my eyes are strange... maybe it's only due to the texture, or material...

In any case, your work on this picture is really "spectacular" really "pro", really "hollywood"

Well. Going fast on felicitations, congrats...You're definitively one of the favorites.
For me, regarding to the last picture you post, there are 2 little things that would "hurt" me.
1st the motion blur of the reactor which doesn't seem t be in the sense of his move (but oyou have already reduce it and it is better).
2nd and what is most important I think, you got so much great textures everywhere (great on reactor expecially) but there is something which looks like phong which is the car which is completely destroyed at the center of the picture. Adding some dust or colors and you'll got the perfect picture.

Oh and I love the risk to cut the picture but let the smoke continue out of the border.

Ive been pretty quiet of late cos i like the way this is going, but being as you mentioned that you almost at the final image, i thought id give some tough crits if its ok...

The explosion and smoke on the plane make it look like its at rest and smouldering. Maybe add blacker, thicker, more billowing smoke forming a trail where it was flying, add violent, sparking explosions rather than a few gentle flames, and add more debris and dust where it is ploughing into the bridge.

That car in the foreground looks like its doing a dukes of hazzard style jump! The motion blur is probably responsible for this. Maybe roll the angle of the car a bit and add some debris under it to make it look like its being lifted from the impact.

The cracks in the road look a little static at the moment. Some extra chunks of tarmac and debris in the foreground would make it look more kinetic and destructive.

In general, i think you need more things 'frozen' in time. The whole thing looks a bit static at the moment, with the running man being the only thing that really conveys movement. Everything else looks stationary, but with motion blur added. My entry suffers from the same problem at the moment!

Hope you dont think im an arse for being that picky, but i just want it to be as good as possible - you have a good chance of making it in this comp!

I really admire the skill and talent that's gone into detailing this piece but I have to admit I really loved the overall feel of the version you did a while back with the radial zoom that blew out all the detail. Or maybe it was the guy in the center that seemed to give that version a more energetic feel.
Still, very impressive

on this last image... I think the street color is tooo yelow...
and I think the car need some explosion... or fire... something not to distracting

Bit busy again, but I just thought I'd pop in to say thanks for the latest comments and crits. I'll try to take care of all the tweaks pointed out (nope Andy, I certainly don't think you're an arse :D ) - all good points across the board, and hopefully I'll be able to find some energy to fix those last bits before the deadline.

Catch'y'all laters peeps

Waouuuw, James, long time i've didn't post here, and what an update, man you're almost finished, i don't read all(-sorry so many post!), but i'm agree with Andy for some point, the car on the foreground jumping really strange, and for me the black car near the plane must be lift by behind. Perhaps the reactor can be more near the camera, more big, coming to us...
Adding some part of road, rock or debris and i don't know if you'll plan to make a city in the background, perhaps just a little lost in the fog.
And the characters, perhaps he can run prepared to jump out of the bridge. :arteest:

Just my 2cent...

I think it doesn't miss a lot to be (for me) the most spectacular entry. The concept is really good, the technics is amazing, waiting to see more update. Keep this way my friend... your work is an exemple for many of us.

PS: I don't know if already ask, but for me this white band, on top, bottom and right, "destabilize" me, hard to judge.

:curious: I must agree with flyingP, the image is too "frozen", not enought things are in fast movment. IMO you need some things like a breaking glass explosion, a bigger element catapulted on forground and going close to the camera... etc

Dudez0rs! Yeah, I'm still alive and all that, just somewhat busy with a couple of boring jobs that never seem to be quite finished. I did manage to do a bit further work on this entry yesterday, and I'll hopefully get some time to prepare some images for an update later today.

So, I've made some more flying dirt.

The basic plan here was to make some stuff being torn up from the road as the nose of the plane plows through it.

Had some initial problems finding the best method. I knew exactly how I wanted it to look, but it took me a while to figure out how to go about it.

At first I tried hard pyrocluster particles in a system with around 5000 particles. Looked like crap. Even at 10000 particles it still looked like crap, so I abandoned that idea.

Then I tried sweeps and textures, just the same method you'd use to make hair on a character. It looked slightly better, but not quite good enough, so I scrapped that idea too.

Eventually I made it with metaball particles. To get rid of the annoying soft "metaball look" I converted the result to an editable mesh and optimised the hell out of it, shaving 90% of the polygons off, and switched off the phong smoothing, which gave me a very hard and edgy look - just what I wanted.

The rest was just down to post-processing to get the right contrast and colour.

Release candidate 0006 coming up below in a minute...

Aside from adding the roadsurface debris described in the previous post, I've made the following changes:

- Rendered a new section of the bit of road in the lower left corner. The same model was used, but I added some displacement to it and comped it over the original at 50% opacity. This was to make it seem less stable and sort of not entirely locked in position.

- Added some more and even darker smoke in the middle-upper right part of the image. It's the same smoke layer I used before, but I rotated it a bit, masked it differently and fiddled around with levels and colours... and I added some motionblurred noise into it as well to make it more grainy.

- Overall colour corrections, mostly adding some more blue to balance out the yellow a bit, mainly to revert the whole image to a more neutral appearance.

Still a few more things I'd like to add, but it will be yet another few days until I've got time to work on this thing again.

oh yes!! IT looks amazing james . Really hit the spot with this one . now it really binds the plane with the ground .just a thought maybe motion blur the center car's edges with a radial blur to show the car streched and pushed by the plane and bind the two effects together. fy fan det ser bra nu !! kör hårt james

Lookin absolutely wonderful! :)

You're planning on adding some sky into the top right there, right? In between those bridge support cables and stuff...

Oh, and did you scrap the white border on all 4 sides idea?, with the car flyin out of it? I really liked that!

Other than that... excellent :)

11-12-2005, 09:19 PM
Wow! this looking fantastic!:scream: But the car in the left foreground looks like it was shot out of a cannon, it would be better if it was flipping, so maby add some roll to it.

Thanks a lot for the latest comments guys (and girlz0rs)!

Anyway, I've added the finishing touches now, and I'm going to upload the finals in a couple of minutes, including the story and title. Some of your suggestions have been implemented, some have not. There's obviously things that could be tweaked further, but then again I could theoretically continue tweaking until the end of time too - there's always something to improve upon. But this has to stop :D

Spending almost three months on a single stillframe is slightly more than I can endure :D and I really REALLY feel like moving on to another project I've got in mind, so I've made up my mind and I'm going to call it a day as far as my spectacular entry goes. On another note, it also feels like I've reached the point where further tweaks might potentially do more damage than good, and that fact also constitutes a good reason to put it to rest.

In summary, just like in the previous challenges, I've learned heaps while working on this. My main desire was to get comfortable with complex layering and compositing, and I can safely say that most of the mysteries have been transformed into knowledge, so: mission accomplished.

Finally, I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to all those who have posted comments and crits in this thread! Invaluable points across the board, as always.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Update below: Final image and story. The only changes from RC 6 are some tweaks on the blur of the car to the left, and the addition of 200.000 small pieces of zoomblurred glass, emerging from the area around the airplane nose

"It was just another late sunday afternoon, and I was on my way back home from a photoshoot. I had only been driving on the bridge for some thirdy seconds or so when I saw this huge cargo jet hit the tower on the other side.

I slammed on the brakes and just froze. Couldn't believe what I saw. Didn't know what to do at first, so I ended up just standing parked there. The plane dropped really fast and came sliding towards my end of the bridge.

It was totally surreal, seeing it plow through all those cars like a giant lawnmower while the bridge collapsed behind it, bit by bit. For some reason I got the impulse to grab one of my cameras from the passenger seat, then I stepped out of the car. Any moderately sane person would of course have tried to make a 180 and drive the hell away from there, but not me... I was only glad I had a long lens, and basically just started firing away.

This picture was the very last shot. The wreck had just come to a full stop, and a fraction of a second later the wires around it snapped all at once and the whole thing fell straight down and disappeared.

The guy that came running towards me barely made it. We've met a few times since, just for a beer or two.

Nothing scares him anymore."

Hi I just checked throu your entire project and, man you kick ass.
the only thing that comes to mind is that the top right bridge extension is just cut short in a way that feels, i dont know, a bit to soon maybe because you have the tail sticking above the sky background and the bridge road feels closer but the extension is just cut. I dont know if you know what i mean or if its on purpose but i just thought.
Really great work, your a winner. GL//Per

Only one thing seems to me quite strange: the smoke over the plane. I think it could need more dynamic, it is too...sticky, too static like if the plane burning without moving. Or maybe too much smoke.. I don't really know exactly. It is just an idea, and not really a crit:scream: cause your work is very impressive.

Just a quick thanks to y'all

About the white framing.... yeah, I realise it's potentially a bold move and that some will have issues with it, and that's totally cool of course - just comes down to personal tastes and so forth.

It's like when you're going out for dinner and your significant other says "Are you going to wear that shirt?" You have to make a choice at that point - either change to another shirt or proudly keep it on :D

The bottom line would be that I've tried a straight crop too, but I just thought it looked bland and less interesting than the admittedly somewhat unorthodox solution I've got now with the pop-outs on white.... Soooooo, I'll take my chances and keep it the way I prefer it.

Anyways, thanks again, and good luck finishing up your respective entries!

Hi James,

I´m currently fixing up the last things on my work... but after watching your final the 10´th time i have to say that this is realy awesome spectacular Action! Thumbs up my Friend!

I think you dit it this time... i knew the idea with an airplane crashing somewhere is not new and some People may thing that´s maybe a bit political uncorrect. But you realiced this idea realy well!!

there is only one small thing that i don´t like. With all the smoke on the Background you can´t see which Bridge the plane is crashing on.. But the rest is AWESOME!

I whish you good luck with the judges my Friend!
Let´s SPECTACULAR ;)

Cheers  Alex

Thanks again for the recent comments, y'all

Now I've relaxed a bit, and when I looked at the image again this morning I decided that it's somewhat OK. Ironically enough, it seems that I could have made it a bit better if I had worked faster. General boredom has a great impact on me, and that's why a speedy execution is really important... That's in fact what made me pull out of the previous M&S challenge - didn't get results fast enough to maintain interest I guess. So even though I managed to finish this one rather quickly, I should be able to speed up even more next time :p

And again, wish you all good luck with your final renders, and that you'll find good work-arounds in case your software decides to act up and go all nasty on your asses.

If you're a Cinema 4D user and get into trouble, drop me a PM and I'll do my best to help.

Well done on finishing your entry. It still has a few things on it i would alter, but i guess i have a slightly different vision of what this particular plane crash would be like!
Anyhow - i think it looks great, and its only because ive seen it so much that im being a bit picky. I know exactly how you feel about getting fed up with working on a single image for so long. I think its about time i wrapped up my entry soon too!

Congrats on finishing, and best of luck with the (eventual) judging!

Hi James! Very impressive job, that's sure! :applause: In my opinion it is too complex, maybe...less would be more, but irrespectively of this it is truly awesome. :D Good luck with the judging!

Andy H - Yeah, tell me about it... :D

eddie, rawwad, sgabe - Thanks a lot guys, glad you like it

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*ahem* There were a few more things... some minor details that have been bugging me for the past few days, so I've actually rendered an additional pass to fix those issues. Will upload a new final and zipped TIF in a few minutes.

The things that annoyed me like a small grain of sand in the eye were the following:

- The tires on the closest car to the left were perfectly smooth. No tread pattern or whatever it's called... didn't think it mattered before, but I finally decided it needed to be fixed.

- The rightmost jet engine looked off somehow... slightly weird lightning and a flat sort of smoothness.

- The smoke at the very top of the image had a subtle greenish tint, which I didn't like.

So I've rendered a new set of tires and a new rightmost engine. Still the same models of course, but with some small changes. And just for the hell of it I rendered it with FR stage 2 instead of AR. Then I made a masked colourbalance adjustment layer to change the tint of the smoke: up on the yellow and magenta to escape the green and get something more towards reddish-bright yellow.

Thusly, a new final (the really-finally-final  ) coming up below, and to be on the safe side I'll copy/paste the story in there as well, so if you've already read it there's no point doing it again, because it's exactly the same.

Cheers

For the record - the story copy-pasted again:

Nothing scares him anymore."

ahh! I don't know that you post the final image! great image for sure! and absolutely spectacular! something that I feel strange is the white frame on top and bottom , I think it distract the image , but maybe it's for me only , anyway very good job!

JamesMK
11-19-2005, 01:34 PM
Glad you like it monsitj - and I know the white framing is subject to various opinions, but I guess it's a personal thing. Anyway, this is hopefully really the final version, unless something else starts to annoy me later on :D But I've started on a new project since a few days back, so with a bit of luck I will not pay anymore attention to this particular image again.

Hello James,
Your work is more then everything already said about it... so, I'm not going to add a word to it.
The only thing I think it could be a plus, if that's possible, is to rotate the all image a bit, 5 or 10 degrees, just to give the sense that this is being captured by a scared person and that he's not in a safe position... I dont know if I explained myself very well, but that's it.

Nice final image. Very dynamic. The only thing i can crit is that I think it would look better if you croppe out the smoke and tail at the top in your final image. I think cropping it out would give it a stronger cinematic quality. Looks great though, lots of nice details.

So you meant to get rid of the white border on the left side?... the car poppin out was just plain great in my opinion. Still a grade-A image though :). Turned out phenomenal.

Any chance we'll get to peak at the hi-res version? (if you already put it somewhere and I missed it, sorry).

Excellent stuff - looks really cool on those closeups.

I know its the final image, but a coupla things that bug me and i dont know if theyre intentional or not:
The vertical bridge cable on the right of the image cuts off the sky and has a white background showing through the cable gaps.
Also, given the fact that the plane's tail is creeping out of the white frame, i think it would be natural to have the main bridge beam on the right continue off the top of the image, rather than cutting off like that.
Dont know if your willing to make any more changes now, but its only a minor thing.
Great final image - very action packed and exciting, and all that debris around the impact and dust really makes it.

Spiffing job

EDIT - ive just read your previous posts - DONT KILL ME! I realise how annoying it is making several 'final' images, only to have some cheeky git still pick flies with it :p

It is finished!

Dimi - lol

Andy - Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah! :scream: :D Too late with the don't-kill-me-bit I'm afraid, I've already dispatched a squadron of killer nanoBots over to your place. They move slowly though, so I'm fairly certain you (and all of us) will die from old age before they even get half way across the sea. They never quite told me this when I bought them. Been thinking about claiming a refund.

The image is excelent One of the best in here!!
but... look at the right top corner of the final image The space between last bringe line and image border the space there is white - no sky dust all cut away . Is this an error in image's sent composition or it was ment to be that way!?
