Thanks all for all your support. Hoep the experience gained from last challenge will show in this one. Glad to see old and new faces here. Now I must get back to checking all those notifications ( even more this challenge:cry: ), and thinking up of a few ideas.

ace4016
09-05-2005, 11:32 PM
Ok, I have organized my thoughts a bit more and here goes a few ideas:

1) My Love! - A person or thing (haven't decided on whether it should be male or female, or even a pet) does something miraculous to save (I like hero themes :D ) or impress his/her/its love.

2) The Sculptor - A sculptor stands there infront of the statue he/she made that stands tall enough to scrape the skies as people gawk in awe.

3) One Man Army! - One man (or woman) jumps into battle to fight a massively sized army, with a grin on his/her face as if it was goign to be easy (maybe even carrying about 4+ weapons all at the same time).

4) Alien Sunset - A "Spectacular" sunset of a planet (haven't thought of the name yet). Maybe even some small event going on as not to disturb the scene.

Each and every one of these ideas give me something new to explore. Hmmmm, I'm worried about originality, so I'll be trying to think up of more. Any you guys like so far?

I also got a wacom for my birthday right after the last challenge, so I'll try using it more on this project (haven't really used it much, and i suck at painting).

Concepts 2 and 3 sound the most promising, althought the Scuptor concept seems to be the most "spectacular" to me.

ace4016
09-06-2005, 12:55 AM
Thanks Artistic, if I do pick one of those two, it woulld be "The Sculptor" since i think it's a bit less cliche then "One Man Army."

Here are a few more:
5) Maximus Machina - A great big marvel of a machine newly build as a some looks at the feature list that rolls out like Santa's Good-Bad list.

6) Timmy! Get Down From There! - A little boy, named Timmy, somehow gets up high on a stack of items commonly found around the house and balances on his pinky as his mother is about to faint and a photographer snapping a picture.

7) Batter Up! - As the men hide in a trench, an enemy has thrown a grenade at them. But just at the top of the trench, a young soldier swings his bat, ready to send the grenade soaring back at the enemy.

8) May-Day! - A pilot jumps out a helicopter while holding a passanger out of the helicopter as it explodes with debris just missing them.

Once I settle on one or two, I'll start sketching.

Thanks Jorge:thumbsup: .

One last Idea, thought of it while watching the football game ( FSU vs. UM).

9) TouchDown! - Opposing team is up by three, there's 10 seconds left, 4th and goal; their goign for it. The shot? The RB leaps over the the O-line, frog's eye view of the RB falling into the endzone, it's a touch down!

I'll start trying to pick one.....after the game:D . Then, off to sketching!

I've narrowed my ideas down to 2 (The Sculptor), 7 (Batter Up!), and 8 (May-Day!). I am strongly leaning towards 7, 2 somewhat after that, and because of all the explosion entries I think I am goign to try to stay away from 8, but we'll see what happens. I'll start sketching later today when i wake up, promise:wise: . I may still reconsider some of the others, but these I think fit the topic the most. Wonder if a grenade will go off if hit by a bat.....

Going to have to say I love the "May-Day" idea and "Batter-Up" idea. Both original. The "Batter-Up" idea would seem like a spectacular event seeing a soldier do something like that. Personally I would like to see that. Also would make as a great story. Just the idea and setting is a story enough. Plus you got alot of room for emotion.

Good luck on your choice.

Batter Up! - As the men hide in a trench, an enemy has thrown a grenade at them. But just at the top of the trench, a young soldier swings his bat, ready to send the grenade soaring back at the enemy.

The cam angle didn't turn out exactly how I saw it in my head, and the pose of the soldier swinging the bat is kind of weak, but here it is (I'll probably do a paint over). There would be a few more soldiers there in the trench. The enviroment would be in the middle of an attack to there will be dirt blowing up, bullets whizzing by, etc.

The Sculptor - A sculptor stands there infront of the statue he/she made that stands tall enough to scrape the skies as people gawk in awe.

I was to lazy to pose more people, but there would be a few people here and there looking at this large statue of Hermes. The guy you see there is the sculptor. I originaly had the sculptor at the base of the statue, and only aroudn the hips showing, but I couldnt get the camera angle, so I change it a bit. The statue's head is in the clouds....litereally.

As I promised, updates. I tried sketching but it wasn't working:sad: . They look a lot better in my head :/, o well. I will try to get "May-Day!" up asap. Still haven't decided.

nemirc - hehe, good luck with the mermaid one.

Adriano_Zanetti - Thanks.

Sleepinglion - I'm leaning towards "Batter Up!" a lot, but I think i should give some of the others a second tohugh before goign with it. I pictured "Batter Up!" in 2d so I'm still trying to figure out how it would translate to 3d.

xric7 - hehe, thanks, but they are biped models from character studios for max, not my modeling. They are only there to show the concepts.

I'll probably paint over "Batter Up!" to show more of an enviroment. More "sketches" and stuff coming soon....hopefully.

Hey man, I like the direction you're taking, but :), I'm not too sure you need see the sculpor, wouldn't it be cool to have this really impressive cam angle from the ground, maybe you'd see a bit of crowd staring at the statue ... and suddenly... that statue would start moving! ...maybe it's staring back at the cam and starts bending down to reach at it. You get the picture ? ...with lots of debris falling from the surface cracks appearing. I love those cam angles in "jason and the argonauts" when there's a huge figure involved in the sequence.

Anyway, do whatever you want with that, my 2 cents!

I like the idea of May-day dude. The sculptor is also interesting if you play more with the composition. Just a small suggestion for that, a worms eye view would work pretty well if you want to show the scale of it and expressions of the people. A birds eye view would also work if you show the sculptor sitting or somewhere around the shoulder or what not, marveling at his/her creation. I don't know, just a thought. Hope it helps.
but i definately like the two idea a lot

cheers bro

Hey hey, I'm subscribed! I see you've chosen to do the sculpture, but I agree with Adriano_Zanetti, you might not neccessarily need to show the sculptor, but if you want to you could show him loolking real smug or something, something that shows how he feels at that time when his statue is being shown.

Cheers, I'll be watching!

jddog - Thanks. I think I'll play with this a bit more as well as batter up.

Adriano_Zanetti - Thanks for your suggestions Adriano, I haven't watched "Jason and the Argonauts" in so long, but I think I know what you are talking about, I think I'll try that camera angle. I'm not sure I'll make the statue as I want the scene to be a bit more realistic (not neccesarily the render). I'll play with the camera angles more.

JamesMK - We'll see:)

nemirc - Thanks. I will try getting "May-Day!" up, had a few things to do today.

the best - Thanks, we'll see how this all turns out.

DaddyMack - The bigger, the better:D . Thanks

Arc80 - "May-Day!" is pretty cool, but I think there are too many explosion entries, but I am still considering it (I have no idea how I will do the explosion:p ). With "The Sculptor" I will play around with a frog/worm eyed view. You gave me an idea with the bird eyed view, I'm thinking of haveing the sculptor chiselling away at the statue up around the head/neck/shoulder while down at the ground you see passer-byers gawking up at the massive statue and the little man working on the statue. Thanks for the suggestions.

mmoir - After about an hour after I posted I just remembered from animating that poses in 3d/2d for some reason need ot be slightly exaggerated to be read clearly. I will push the straight leg foward more and bend the back leg more more as well as make him lean back even more, jsut to make sure the pose is dynamic and read clearly. Thanks.

keetmun - I'll definetly be working more on "The Sculptor," using many of the suggestions you guys gave me. Hope my updates will impress you.

I didn't expect "The Sculptor" to be a such a big hit. hehe, If I do pick it, this will be the first time I do actual feet (I already hate doing hands). Still trying to decide but I'm starting to come close to my decision. I'll work on showing a 3d sketch of "May-Day!" tomorrow along with improving the comsp for the other 2.

May-Day! - A pilot jumps out of a helicopter while holding a passanger as it explodes with debris just missing them.

I went a bit crazy with the atmospheric apparatuses, but there's a helicopter behind all that fire and smoke. The final comp will probably be zoomed out a bit more and you would be able to see the pilots expression as that helicopter blade flies right past him (or will it?!).

ace4016
09-11-2005, 10:21 PM

ace4016
09-13-2005, 05:23 AM
xric7 - Thanks, updates might not come till later in the week.

Hooch - Good to see you here, thanks.

nemirc - I'm a bit confused which one is the first one, I'm guessing you mean "The Sculptor?" Seems everyone forgot about "Batter Up!" :P . I think for me I am really deciding between those two instead of "May-Day!" I sort of have to get the right comp before I can really decide which I want. Since they both require a base male mesh, I can probably get started on the modeling and worry about which one to pick later this week (who knows when I'll finally pick one).

updates will usually be scarce monday-thursday; still getign use to this schedule of mines.

May-day would look really nice if the angle could be push a bit more extreme and maybe don't put the characters too close to the camera. You loose a lot of the vfx. The vfx can actually add to the dynamic of the shot, plus it can be a good tool to show contrast and lighting fx.

hmm...hard to choose from may-day and the sculptor. oooh, i can't wait what you come up with and decide. AWESOME so far bro!!!

Another camera view. I think I should fix the scale of the buildings, the statue and the sculptor. Right now I think I'll make the statue an ivory and gold statue just like the Zeus statue of the 8 wonders of the world.

Climax - Soon enough, just have to get most of the concept setup up.

mmoir - I think there are enough explosin entries, so I think I'm goign with "The Sculptor." Hopefully I'll have the time to complete it.

nemirc - hehe, yea, felt like I need a small change. It's a bit more appropriate for the site, don't you think? I know how much school gets in the way of free time, good luck with those exams.

I decided to show "Batter Up!" just one last time, I think I might do it as a later project, but I'm not sure it appeals to the masses as spectacular as an image alone. So the city in the sculptor has a circlular layout....I need to raise the streets, didnt appear in the render:/ . The statue is being built for a new city by a very talented sculptor who wanted to make the next "great wonder of the world." It's in the center of the city, but im not exactly sure how big the buildings should be around the statue (they won't reach above his waist for sure). Not sure what type of buildings to put closest to the statues either. This city is suppose to be known for having extremely tall buildings, so this statue is definetely huge. First model will be the statue itself, I can create the base mesh in about a day or two and "chisel" on from there (the "chiseling" or detailing will take a while for me since I'm not good at adding detail). Hermes/Mercury is one of my favorite Greek gods, so I hope I do this well.

hello friend...i saw your sketches...and i think the camera angle from the sculptor 02 is very interesting...but i allso thnk this last shot has a lot of potential...i imagine this great statue surounded by a complicated system of elevated roads ..u know kinda bridges...with moving cars..and maybe some helicopters flying around...i really love your idea for this entry...and it will look spectacular for sure...ill be watching u man!

Angel - Thanks. I'll be ironing out the cam views a bit more.

Snake - Great idea about the roads. I am still developing the idea, so we'll see what happens, been to busy to really concentrate on this but I'll get it all done (hopefully). I'll try my best not to disappoint you:thumbsup: . Might even see some 3d by saturdauy...who knows.

just came to spam a bit... :p hope to see that soon :D i can picture a rather spectacular view withsome great rooflights and loadsa lights. fog in the steaming streets, and the sculptor, high in the air doing his masterpiece. batman meets bladerunner and the geniuos architect over on his finest piece...
er... or so. keep it up, cant wait to see your next update!

Damn examsn!!!

Anyway mister, I want to see a full sketch!!!

I think the scupltor one is the one to go... now wonder which angle you have. Do you want to feel small next to the statue or do you want to feel big compared to the audience that is watching your statue from below?

hehe, exactly what I'm tryign to figure out. Aslo trying to incorporate builds into the scene to compliment the statue, such as Gotham city (as Angel has suggested). Might have to figure out how to render with MR too (not as easy as max scanline:/).

Angel - Thanks for the suggestions. I've actually not seen Bladerunner:cry: , but I'll try checking it out.

dvelasco - Thanks. Hopefully I will finish rethinking this thing soon.

I kind of like the low angle on the "Sculptor". The image just popped into my mind - the sculptor hiting the statue's big toe and the statue looking down at him in reproach. :D

Good idea to work with the bones version to get the final layout, but when it comes to 3D you can do that with finished one also  So theres a slight advantage over us 2D guys.

Its always nice to hear your comments so good luck and thanx! :)

I've never tried an image apsect other then 1.3, so I decided to try it out. That circular thing at the top is a road system higher then the statue...not sure why its there since nothing is taller then that statue. Well, this is a new comp with with people at the base of the statue (yea, that's not dirty on your monitor). Will finally try to get started on modeling.

ace4016
09-24-2005, 10:54 AM
SoniaNotRed - I'll try to stick with a low angle, but something the will show a bit of the enviroment since the statue is seriously tall:P . hehe, I am trying to stick to "within the realm of possibility."

Falcor_ - Thanks, hopefully I'll have a model started soon.

gpepper - Your right, this is my last comp update for a while.

After reading the intructions once again, I see that they might be looking for an even more then just a spectacular sight, so I have to find some way to tunr this into a once in a life time event that is "within the realm of possibility." I'll model a bit first:P . Next update will definetly be a model, the start of the statue.

The floating statue

If you don't plant that foot on the ground the thing will fall forward. Just something you should know ;)

ace4016
09-24-2005, 09:38 PM
You mean the foot up in the air? hehe, the reason there are two blue base things is because one is just for the ground foot to rest on and the other is sort of a mag-lev type thing to support the statue. Depending on the rest of the scene, may even have extra things floating around to keep the statue steady. Thought I mentioned it....hehe, must have slipped my mind.

nemirc
09-24-2005, 10:14 PM
yes... maglev

I don't want to be close when the statue falls :D

man i like the idea about the EMF, i think thaty will add a interesting point...i imagine this is going to be like a huge magnet isnt it?, that will be just under the foot on the air right?

TheFirstAngel
09-26-2005, 03:15 AM
erm the statue is holded by an emf? ouch, hope there never is a powerdown. :scream: lol.

Finally, modeling! Didn't get much done today because I tried a new method of modelling. I got a Loomis drawing, set it as an image plane for a guide (yea, im still using the image planes:( ), got a wire reference for a human male, took a plane and extrude, extrude, extrude! This is the start of Hermes' chest, I'll use his model to make other humans in the scene (although they will be pretty miniscule). I usually follow the Joan of Arc type of modelling, but started with a plane and at the chest for this one. Wanted to do something new for the challenge:P .

nemirc - There is always a back up:thumbsup: .

Snake - It will be under the foot, but I'm not sure how it will look yet.

Angel - lol, non all magnets need a constant electric current, sheesh! Thanks, I think a tall image aspect is what I'll stick to.

Guess the body won't take me only a day or two now that I am trying this out in a new way:P .

I doubt I'll be able to finish this; i have a tst this week, a big test next week, going home and will be away from my computer the week after that, and that leaves me with a few days to do everything. I had a test last week, 2 the week before, and another the week before that......I hate test:(. I can always attempt to take a few hours or so 'till time is up, but I'm not really a fast modeller, and after coming home from classes, I'm exhausted. I'll see how far I can get these last few weeks, but I'm not seeing this being finished. hehe, I should atleast get one more update up, huh. I'll try my best.
