When I meet you last week, I believed you want rest a little .....
So once more : Go ahead my friend !!!
yes, I thought of being able to rest me a little, but it's stronger than me, I don't know if it's a healthy occupation, but what I love over all, it's to take part in this kind of challenge, and my principal competitor, it' me, and it is not always easy :scream: hahahaha
I was really happy to meet you the last week, a very good memory, I hope that we will still have the chance to see you a another time, here or in your far country... or maybe a day at Peyrepertuse castle :bounce: .

Hey Lemog, nice work on those details!... the only thing I have to say for now, and excuse me if I'm wrong, is that you shouldn't have rigid edges likes those in the top of the main column and soft edges in the others... I think you should decide for just one aesthetic. Great job.

No the problem, you're completely right, but I don't have re work again over this part yet, because I will finish it according the assembly and the superposition of the stairs elements.
I hope that will be appropriate to you when will have finished it.
Thanks a lot for this good comment

As for your big modeling project of the chatedral of Rheims... I really hope you come around to do it some day, it would be spectacular indeed. And, you do need to make plans for after getting retired, don't you? :)

The detailing is coming on beautifully, but I didn't expect anything less ;)

Such a shiney floor - have the monks been scrubbing hard?

Just a little thing - I wonder if maybe you should mirror one of the columns to preserve the symmetry (the spirals both go the same way)?

It's also a reason which makes that I would not begin this project too quickly, I benefit from time to collect some documentations.

but I would also like to associate it a true cultural project, and true a historical step. So that this reconstitution is not only for the beauty of the work, not only for the love to make 3d, and especially not considered as a technical prowess. And also a real project of discovered and knowledge, architecture, royal sacrings which proceeded there during many centuries, great historical stages, the role of the building from the point of view of the religion, also compared to the people, those which built it, all the sufferings which are associated there, also of the devastations of the 2 last world wars.

yunisirees -> I reassure you immediately, it will remain me still much of work, I envisaged to don't exceed a month for architecture, and installations, and I think that will not be too much. Perhaps still 1 month more to work on the principal character, and a last month to work on environment, mood, details, and magic effects...... then, the spectacle should not stop too early. In the contrary case, I would launch out in the challenge 2d because that would like to me also much.

Ordibble P. Lop -> no mate, no symmetry for the columns, because we are in a dungeon, there will be columns all around of the circular room. Thanks a lot for your interest.

Hey Lemog,
I see you have chosen your concept, thats a tough part . I like your dungeon modeling so far, when the textures are applied it will look great I am sure. The Concept is very interesting only if I were this eager for knowledge when in school, I am looking forward to how this comes together.
I agree about the previous comment about the rounded column tops and also think the bottom of the column where it meets the floor could be less rounded.

Good job so far:thumbsup:

That is a wonderful vision for a project - and also a very good description of what you're doing here for the challenge, isn't it? It's all about love for the culture and knowledge ... very sympathetic, I wish you all the best :)

Calisto -> Very glad you like that, thanks

mmoir -> thanks for your comment... about the low part of the column, at the junction with the floor, I don't see exactly the thing that disturb you... the form ? I'm just inspiring by an existing form... of column base... don't know...

Rebecca -> Thanks to take time on my website... but "genius" is really too "strong" for me... just a passionned guy... you can find other "real" 3d genius in the CgTalk page... and I don't have this same level... I just trying to do a better things at each new picture... not always easy, but certainly always a real challenge... one of goals of my life. :p

About the soft look of the columns... nothing complicated... an half-sphere of point light in depthmapshadows and a principal spot... with a low-mid quality of sampling (and it's faster like that, practicle for render wip...), that permit to obtain this soft/grany look... that's all... :arteest:

Gunilla -> Thanks for your wishes about the cathedral project... but sincerely, I don't thing to start before few years... well now... updates... :wip:

really sweet laurent :)

i really envy you *gg*. i would never be able to do that in such a short amount of time.

the thing that is bothering me is, the holes on the top and the bottom, the look so straight and like made from someone of Bauhaus^^. in my opinion they dont fit in the design very well. if you could make the edges of the holes more round it would do i think. but thats all just my opinion^^.

have you thought about the colour scheme? you kept it very well grey *gg*. but since this is 3d you can do it after you have modelled all the things anyway. i sometimes tend to forget.

keep up all the great work :)

About these holes... they're are here only to receive pieces of wood with square section... none report with bauhaus or over fantastic style like that... I can reassure you... I hope and a little bit sure that will be less disturbing when you will see the next step... with these woods pieces, which maintain the balcony.

About the tone style, for the moment, I've just play during the modeling cession... some test, without real textures, only bump map... that can change during the creation steps. But I have a precise goal, as I've said before, it's to have a grey mood for the environment...then, not so much colored textures or shaders.

Thanks a lot Britta for your interest

Here a part very important and very interesting for me.

For 2 reasons.

The first, an aesthetic reason, because I like much this style of flowered arabesques.

The second, is a evocative reason, because this door closes a library of the knowledge and culture, like preserving them, but without however really closing it, because it's has "clairvoie", therefore never truly closed, which makes knowledge accessible to everyone.

Nice ideas behind the work. Your update design style also makes me wonder. All these details from letter to model than presentation...simply wonderful. So if you plan to make a printed Lemog WIP album...count with me my friend. But for first: don't forget to sleep sometimes :-)

Excellent ornaments on the gate! Fits perfectly!

Yes everything comes together now :D . One question about the wood that has the metal head in the end. how is it connected to the wood ? IMHO it would look better with some kind of connection on the metal part with the wood part. Some screws a plate something. Now to my eyes it looks like the wood and the metal part are the same material.

There's no real prob Lemog, it looks stunning! I've worked in stone and just noticed this
http://www.brainchilddigital.com/misc/plinthe.jpg
I just thought that, while it adds a nice detail, the plinthe top (horizontal slab) intersecting the uprights detracts from the credibility a little because it would be impractical to create in real life... You have some nice texture stuff happening. Iis the centre part of the balcony on the left side in your last image not a little too low. The wood centre accent floor is lower compared to the medievil paving stone on the right, shouldn't they be the same.

Laurent we all have progress to do, but where I'm not suprise is the amount of details you gor for, that's what I like about you just go wild, your mother earth was nuts for the amount of details, but I have to admit that this image is less chaotic so we can actually appreciate the details even more, that gate is cool, I'm working on a Waka (Maori canoe) and they're like you for details they put alote, great work so far.

Elendil le Génial -> pas constructif, maus ça fait foutrement plaisir.... merci beaucoup Nicolas...

Yunisirees -> hahahaha :scream:

shtl -> Thanks for your words my friend Corentin.

JamesMK -> You're right, you point exactly the tyhing I don't like, the plastic aspect... 2 solutions, work more on the material... or used the real textures I've planed before to put on it... I post nearly some new render test. Thanks for your advice James.

Agamemnwn -> I just discover your pocket watch... hey... fantastic work Jannis... I like that... for sure, with all these details, that rocks...

Becca -> Finally, my pleasure in that, it's to re-create something, without think "technicity" of our tools, our 3d tools... just to keep the vision of the builder, of the architect, and so...

Polygons or technics are secondary in this thread, for many reasons... I'm not a champion of 3d technic, and I prefer to display and watch a pleasany picture than a snapshot of the software viewport... I can't change I think, and I understand I'm worse at each challenge... eark...

Finally, I think that these many steps of wip are more important for me than the final picture. I'm afraid to work for a picture during 3 months and don't have as memories only this final image, in my case, I can see behind and watch another time all these wip pictures.

And if I can give again more pleasure to the spectators, it's better, and the goal will be obtained. Often if finally at the end, this image don't win. I would remain finally gaining of a personal challenge, most important thus.

Llynna -> I would work more on the aspect of the stones, wood and materials in general when I would be more advanced. These adjustments will change inevitably with the type of lighting, and also a little according to the framing, then, for the moment, I would return more in detail in a few days.

But a thing is certain, the decoration will be unified more to preserve at the subject its attraction. It's only the environment intended to plant the decoration, not the principal subject of the scene. Thank you very much for your opinion Britta.

feerik -> Merci Joel :thumbsup:

mmoir -> it's just a render test for this paving stones, but of course that they will be identical Mike, finally, not completely, identical but different. Thanks for comment.

Ramtin -> you're always welcome mate :wavey:

Jorge -> mmh mmh... take more care about you ass my friend... just stay with us on your chair... and always thanks to come here.

Romelalgo -> just for you, this is the story about my concept...
"Plunged in the culture".
The history occurs in what we supposes being a keep used like a library. Thousands of books are laid out around, on many stages. We sees many balconies and many staircases. A young man (or a girl) is here, avid there of knowledge and culture. His arms are charged with a lot of books. An important book and very coveted, seems to be extracted violently from the opposed library, above the hole. The young man springs to catch this important book, in a spectacular jump "to the culture and knowledge", but which will involve it in the hole, and to his death.

ar Lutik -> you're right for the moment... this scene appear now less chaotic than the picture in the previous challenge... but It's not finish... I always can fall in the dark side you know (and I remind you that chaos was integral part of the history of "Mother Nature".) Anyway, big thanks for your kind words... Before to go to sleep... I just see your whale... but now you're working on the Waka... good, I must see that soon...

shtl -> yes... maybe you're little right (or totally)... for the moment... I'm yet using a desatured version... cause the original ones are more satured... with the historical proof... but I think with the framing, the perspective and the balustrad, that can be good... don't know exactly, I'm certainly obliged to wait a little that I will more advanced... thanks for advice Corentin.

Hi Laurent, Thanks fot making the detail on the head clear :D :D i was wondering about the pavement on the balcony. I think it depends on the final image who much you want them to stand out. The second image stands out more and your eyes almost imidiatelly go there. I would think that it would distract the focus on the main character because its that saturated with color. on the other way this maybe because of the difference it has with the other materials already in the scene, because they are less saturated. As for the pavement tilling i would say that i looks better if it repeats itself as the gate in the ornament does. This will give the "same chronology effect" and not distract the eye from the main character in motion. IMHO

Thanks for this! Great and insightful comments. :) Yours is definitely a friendly and entertaining thread to see develop, amazing stuff, thanks! :)

Cheers, :)

Jannis -> you understand well, finally, the good choice about this paving will give by the last framing... it must don't disturb so much eyes of the principal subject. I keep like that for the moment... I'm waiting more. Thanks for your interesting words.

Ok! Since I've got no critics or suggestions to give you, for the moment, I'm just about to say something that no one as said before on any thread of another person :)

Here it goes:

Thank you very much to all of you, who with all the critics, suggestions, commentaries, jokes and other forms of presenting your considerations about Lemog's work... inspired him in such a form, that looking at his work, truly inspire us back.

Great update laurent :D :D .the onlycrit i have is about the ornament door . It looks a little flat like it has not much volume in comparisson to the gate lock. just my 2 cents. and another thing i was wondering who many levels of these stairs will it be?

Great modeling, I really like the stairs, only change is I would make it much darker and shadowy...ooo...mysterious...evocative!

Yes... better vision now... remain me few details to do (stone monks, books, decorative objects...) ... and next week, I will start an important thing... the staircase... I have to solutions for it but I don't know exactly what I will choose... A staircase snail including all stairs or a different staircase snail between each stairs. :wip:

Yes, I was just thinking about that - books! Would they be in the niches? I think they need to be quite dominant for the concept to come through clear - but I suppose you have a plan for it, right? I'm not clear about the different types of stairs you're thinking about ... what's a snail?

Waiting eagerly for the librarians :)

, and very atmospheric!
Atmospheric ? hahahaha "do I have a head of atsmosphere" ? It's certainly not funny in english, but that remain us a sentence in an old french classical movie...

the onlycrit i have is about the ornament door . It looks a little flat like it has not much volume in comparisson to the gate lock. just my 2 cents. and another thing i was wondering who many levels of these stairs will it be?
I think the scale between this 2 pieces is good... just think that this door is not very big... certainly you will have a better idea about the scale when the books are in the library. How many stairs visibles in this scene, certainly 4... the first for the action... one up, and 2 below...

Great modeling, I really like the stairs, only change is I would make it much darker and shadowy...ooo...mysterious...evocative!Don't be afraid by the actual aspect of rendering... in not the final one, just for the wip... mood will be certainly darker, and more mysterious... but that, it's an another story that I keep for the end.

Yes... you're right, books are a thing very important in the concept... and I've planed to start them at fhe beginning of the next week. Many old knowledges books...
About the staircase... I don't know exactly the name of these in english, some staircases wich turn around...
Librarians send small hello of their country to the sweet Swedish girl... :wavey:

Thanks to Petra guy to take time to come here

Hey Lemog, looking sweet my friend, especally like the reflection on the floor... keep um coming dudeWell... this reflection was here only to have a pleasant wip... in the final pic... only the hole with the below stairs in the dark... the hole of knowledge...

Hi Lemog, check the proportions of your racks.

The space in the wall and the otrher elements have bigger proportions.

Maybe your books have a 1 m. or 4 feet. I think this is big for a book.
Perhaps the racks should be 8 or 10 in the same place.

The decoration will not allow to remove books easily.

Cheers. Good skill. Are you architect, don´t you?
